Few days into the brilliant New Year and a couple of us are still going strong with those solemn resolutions that were made for 2018; while others (like me) are geared up to make fresh resolutions that we’ll actually stick by next year. More practical, realistic, and viable ones! Clearly, waking up to yoga and giving up cake didn’t qualify as logical. So this issue we’re going to go through a list of classic New Year’s resolutions made and broken time and again. How many can you relate to?
DO FEWER LATE NIGHTS That would have been easy if you weren’t invited to all the 12 o’clock ‘let’s bring in the birthday with a bang’ invites. “It’s just once in a year,” a buddy would insist. True! However, you just have too many friends and therefore, too many birthdays. And then there are those parties that don’t even start before midnight (and it’d be a sin to miss out on the DJ), dinners that just seem to get more interesting as the clock ticks, and oh, let’s not forget the late night movies. SOCIALISE WITH QUALITY PEOPLE MORE OFTEN But the not-so-quality people end up having so much more fun. Five out of seven days doesn’t qualify as ‘often’, does it? SAVE MORE, SPEND LESS So the strategy was quite simple; watch out for when the desired stores had a killer sale or promotion, walk in with an intention to get only what you need, and get out with a good deal. The problem - there were way too many good deals. And miraculously, an item or two from the ‘New Collection’ section just happened to slip in. CLEAN UP THE CLOSET (AND MAINTAIN IT) If there were more shelves and a little extra room, it would have definitely looked cleaner; but shopping for additional space would break resolution number 3, right? Then there is nostalgia! Cleaning uncovers so many long lost things; you just have to pause, abandon the mission, and reminisce. LEARN A NEW INSTRUMENT Yes, taking that initial step of buying the instrument, signing up for classes and actually following through for a few days went absolutely fine. But then your teacher said you weren’t going to perform in a rock band anytime soon with the skills you exhibited and after that, there was obviously no more reason to continue. TRAVEL MORE If the salary hike or bonus had happened, that wouldn’t have been hard at all. Of course, there were great packages that were totally affordable but you like travelling in style only. BE MORE PUNCTUAL (RELATIVELY) This one was clearly not your fault. Things, people, situations themselves, just seem to invariably pop up when you’re on your way. And that causes the delay! Still wondering if that counts as a broken resolution?
COMMERCIALISE THAT HOBBY Yes, yes, yes! All that you had to do was get the plan in place, draw up a pretty presentation for the clients, organise the database, connect with the right people, and kick-start that dream project. But that long to-do list brought some serious procrastination, again. READ MORE (AND WRITE TOO) Bookstores visited, books stacked, and you even got a bedside lamp in place for some late night reading ( just like how they show on TV). But then the most commonly used excuse happened – lack of time. LOSE WEIGHT AND EAT HEALTHY And then there were leftover pizzas from New Year’s Eve. This one is definitely one of the top, most broken, New Year’s resolutions. It’s bad enough that we choose the first of every month to start practising a healthy lifestyle, and if you’re one of those who actually wait for New Year’s Eve to take that step, it’s going to be a lot harder to fight those pizzas. LEARN TO COOK For those who take greater pleasure in being served than serving, this is a bold step. However, when I made that resolution I missed a very important part – comprehending ingredients ( just why would a potato be called pink fir apple, just why?), and that wasn’t part of the deal. That was the end of my resolution! Besides, with passionate chefs laying out the fanciest buffets, it’d be a shame to put your loved ones through your culinary experiments. KEEP CALM IN TRAFFIC All was going well, and then that lousy driver in front decided to drop to 5kms an hour just before that horrible signal that takes hours to change to green again. Breaking your resolution to give that driver a mouthful was essential, and strangely relieving. If you have some firm resolutions for the year which haven’t already been broken yet, we wish you good luck with the next 11 months. P.S. They’ll feel longer than usual, just saying! —HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

hoever said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend is clearly deluded. Do you look at your diamond set when you are feeling low on energy, or just had a break up, or have an incurable craving? No. You run to your refrigerator, take that box of ice-cream out and stuff your face with it until you feel like all your problems have been solved, at least temporarily. Haagen Dazs has for a long time been a permanent resident of my freezer. Looks like I am going to be a permanent resident of Haagen Dazs in 2018. With branches of Haagen Dazs opening in Muscat, and that too not just as any ice cream parlour that you are accustomed to going in Oman, but as a proper experience cafe where you can spend at least a couple of ice-creamilicious hours, I’m very sure that I’m going to be in a state of sugar rush for a good portion of this year. Haagen Dazs recently opened its first branch at the Oman Avenues Mall, flaunting its classy colour-coded interiors and
setting that will effortlessly invite people in. With more than 20 flavours of ice-creams and plenty of other sweet delicacies to choose from, Haagen Dazs is going to be one place for all those with a sweet tooth to look out for. The staff and attendants are as friendly as the ambience and this experience cafe has lived up to the standards of the brand. The idea of the experience cafe, contrary to the usual ice cream parlour where you choose your flavours over the counter and walk away with your ice cream, is to make people sit and savour on the different flavours of ice cream and other desserts and breakfast foods that they have to offer. This reflects in not just their ambience, but also in their food - the way it is plated, served and eventually devoured. Some of my favourites from everything I tried to get my hands on would be: Chocolate brownie: A plate full of exploding, flavoursome deliciousness that had shades of brown and off-white taunting waiting for me. Watching the dish was like enjoying a well
choreographed dance performance. The cookie dough chip and vanilla caramel brownie icecream started melting and amalgamated with the warm brownies covered in caramelised almond nibs, topped with whipped cream. OMR 5.200 Banana Caramel Crepes: If you have a long day and want to feel high on life and energy, then this could be an ideal breakfast meal. Fresh banana pieces blanketed by soft crepes, served with cream and salted caramel is a delight to feed on. Salted caramel ice cream is perhaps going to be my new favourite flavour. This coming from someone who has rejected any flavour other than chocolates is huge. OMR 4.200 Cheesecake Pleasure: Now this is a plate that has the maximum number of flavours all put together. Who knew you could have the sweet mango sorbet and distinctly tangy blueberries with cheesecake and cream that is served with crunchy granola with chocolate sauce and loads of strawberries. Flavour blast! OMR 6.200. —shruthi@timesofoman.com

GOING ON AN INWARD JOURNEY While the physical beneďŹ ts of practising yoga are immense, it also helps to quieten the mind and creates mental awareness with breathing exercises. STORY SHRUTHI NAIR
VOLUME 11 ISSUE 3 JANUARY 4, 2018
R
ecently I came across a very strong post from a friend about how yoga had a lasting impact on his life and how he owes it to his teacher who took the time and effort to try and instil the values of a yogi in him. Since I’ve never been appreciative of yoga as a fitness routine or as many call it ‘a way of life’ and never took an effort to try it out on my own, I decided that perhaps Vidya Venkatesh, the woman who managed to guide my friend towards the enlightening path of yoga could help me understand it better. ‘Yoga is about going on an inward journey’ is the first thing she said when asked to define what yoga is for her. While a lot of people look at it as a form of physical exercise done to gain fitness benefits, this age old practice delves deeper into understanding the potential of the human mind and soul. Patanjali Sutra, which is considered as the highest authority in the ancient scripture is possibly the origin of yoga. According to Vidya, since yoga has a lot to do with meditation and is about an individual’s spiritual journey, it could even date back to Vedanta’s. Over the many years that Vidya has been doing yoga with varying levels of dedication and commitment up until three years back when she finally started taking it seriously, her perception about yoga has changed. “Initially even I was only looking at the physical benefits, but it is no longer an exercise, it is a spiritual journey,” she said. Amongst the various indescribable ways in which yoga changed her life, she enlisted some that were on the top of her mind. “You will be more aware of your feelings. Not like any of your emotions are going to drastically change overnight. For example, if you are angry you feel it come and it won’t be prolonged as it is otherwise.” Shattering my myths about yoga just being about postures and flexibility,

Vidya explains, “While doing yoga, you are focusing on your breath. And breath, you can’t think of the one you took before or the one you will inhale later. Breath keeps you in the present. When you keep practising that and observing your own movement you will be more rooted to the present”. One of the best things about yoga is that it is for all. People of any age, body size, fitness and flexibility levels can practice yoga. It is not about achieving the flexibility that your friend achieved or doing an asana better than he/she did but its about understanding your own body and letting it react to all the stimulus naturally. The first thing you will notice when you practice yoga is that your mind will be calmer. You won’t feel as agitated and anxious and even if you do its effects won’t be prolonged. You will also note improved respiration, energy, and vitality. Apart from that you will also notice physical improvements such as improved flexibility, stronger core muscles, and balanced metabolism. “You need to have a body that is strong to pursue anything. Yoga will help you keep your body fit as your internal organs will get better, all your systems will get better and there will be no block in the flow of energy in your body. Once the flow is free, you can focus on a lot more and finally realise who you are”. Since Vidya doesn’t believe in commercialising yoga and only teaches people who approach her as she feels it is her duty to impart the knowledge of yoga, she feels that it won’t be appropriate for us to promote her classes and instead people who truly want to learn can find her on their own. aving an aesthetically pleasing body and a sturdy physique was a thing of the past, practised in a competitive sport for the classics, where the idol of muscles including Arnold Schwarzenegger, carried crafted physique that had massive upper body proportion and a tiny waist. Today, a relatively new sport has entered the game, birthed out of the classic game and into its own lane, known as Men’s Physique. You cannot speak of the art of body building without mentioning the greatest champ himself, Mr Arnold, who won the Olympia competition seven times, and was celebrated for his remarkable, not-overly-huge muscular build. After decades of influence over body building culture, this sport is back with a new criteria, a new concept, and a new audience. Some may confuse Men’s Physique with Classic Physique, which is not the same. Classic is known for having a rich history full of men who’ll serve you their macho bravado talent with hints of braggadocio swagger, prominent stage presence,
massive body mass, and was seen as a blueprint for aspiring athletes. Men’s Physique on the other hand is a new division that focuses on the athletic-build side of things, where fit contestants sculpt their bodies and seek pleasing muscular lines, symmetry, well-structured proportions, and overall condition and personality, giving room for those unable to attain bodybuilding physique an opportunity to enter the world of chiselled men. Although this field is still unfamiliar to those outside the circle of fitness, with no history and reputation to back it up, it’s gaining popularity by the minute in comparison to other fitness competition, most probably because it’s more achievable for most gym-goers and fitness enthusiasts. THE CULTURE IN OMAN Men’s Physique may be new in the scene, but has quickly gained a huge following from all over the world, and Oman has geared up for a brilliant start. The culture surfaced in town in 2015 after the young, Pro-Card holder Yahya Al Kiyumi became the first Omani to win an international competition and earn himself a gold medal. Now, a wave of aspiring youngsters are in the race for the best statue-like, perfect body. In 2017, Oman held its first Men’s Physique competition.

In 2016, Yahya aimed for an international competition in Poland. He trained hard and followed a strict diet only to bring home the trophy. The first place earned him a professional card, which is a tremendous achievement for someone his age. “I’d like to thank Mohammed Al Zadjali who stood with me in making this a reality,” said Yahya. The young champ then introduced me to his dear friend who is also a hardcore Men’s Physique contestant, Malik Al Harthy. The strapping young lifter began his journey seven years ago, where he turned lifting into a favourite habit. Aspirations to be fit have always been in Malik’s agenda. He was a rockstar in freestyle dancing, gymnastics, and taekwondo when he was a teenager, earning his first gold and silver medals. By the age of 18, he started lifting weights at his local gym in hopes to better sculpt his physique. “My dream was to be the first Omani to compete on an international level, now I made it alongside my friend Yahya” said Malik, adding that “I couldn’t be more proud”. Malik has participated in Flex competition, and was alongside Yahya at the Word Championship in Poland. He came in sixth place. Men’s Physique culture is still growing internationally, and here in Oman it is becoming an ever-popular field with young men joining and training to take part in national, regional, and global contests. Yahya and Malik have become a great example and role models for those aspiring to reach success in fitness. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for this vigorous, monstrous form of sport, especially here in the Sultanate. Worldwide in just a few years, the sport has received positive reaction from athletes, aspiring competitors, and the builders themselves. As of 2012, the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) launched a dedicated division for Men’s Physique sport discipline, and 2013 witnessed the debut of the competition. The competition (which is categorised according to height) consists of men performing two rounds of quarter turns, sporting board shorts of their choice. The final round kicks off with an individual presentation of the contestant before a judging panel of experienced and qualified people from the industry. Aside from having perfect body forms, these athletes should have stage presence, poise, personality, and loads of confidence.
Thanks to buddies like Yahya, the culture is growing to become a vibrant one. Our gold-medal-winning champion Yahya Al Kiyumi, who is a 24 year practitioner has been in the game for six years before deciding to train for a competition. The young man was determined to make it big in this field. He realised his potential and chased his dream of becoming the greatest. “Body Physique contestant is someone who has a beautifully and symmetrically muscular-build body in which you wouldn’t want to keep your eyes off of him” said Yahya, adding that “it is fundamental in this game”. After a while, Yahya noticed how non-existence the culture is in Oman. He struggled to find support for his dream until a professional Emirati trainer contacted him after scrolling through his photos on social media. The coach then trained him for his first contest. He won second place among 40 contests in an Abu Dhabi competition, and won first place in another competition in Ras Al Khaimah. After his success story, he was sponsored by Eat Smart restaurants and supplements store, and went on to be part of other contests including Mr Olympia in Kuwait and Flex in Bahrain, which he won first place and earned the title of ‘Batal Al Abtal’ (Greatest winner).
THE JUDGING CRITERIA To choose the best physique, the panel base their decisions on a number of factors. First, the contestant has to acquire a great stage presence that’s accompanied with greater personality. These rugged testosterone-filled creatures are then asked to enter the stage for assessment, sporting board shorts, no shirt, and barefoot, leaving room for their poise take centre stage. The second factor is symmetry, defined by Webster as “the proper or due proportion of the parts of a body or whole to one another with regard to size and form; excellence of proportion”. Symmetry in this field simply means balance, from top to bottom, left to right, as well as views from the front, back, and sides. Some refer to the body form as an hourglass (which is commonly used for females outside the circuit of Men’s Physique), while others call it the ‘X’ shape, with the cross point being the waistline. Unfortunately, not many folks have the perfect form, others don’t have the genetics to deliver. Those who fall in this category can trick the system by mastering the art of posing; serving an illusion of symmetry. As for the third factor, the panel looks for a figure that has a great muscular structure. Unlike bodybuilding, Men’s Physique demands an athletic build and lean definition without going overboard in terms of muscularity and overall size. Lastly, the body has to be well conditioned, which means it needs to be fat-free, especially for a few days leading to the competition. But, keeping the body composition even can become a difficult task, as some contestants may have strapping on the upper side but soft on the lower end, which messes with the symmetry. Great conditioning reveals muscular details on vigorous figure, but to a lesser degree than that of bodybuilders. Note that the judges examine the figure from all angles, literally. —salim@timesofoman.com
