Meet Abdulaziz Al Khamis, a Kuwaiti director and fashion blogger who’s been fashion blogging since 2004, and has been living in Kuwait and London. STORY SALIM AL AFIFI • PHOTOS SUPPLIED

Where did Wickedz come from? It was a nickname given by my school mates during my growing up years since I use the word ‘wicked’ a lot. The Z at the end comes from my short name: Aziz. It has remained with me since then and hence it became my brand. What inspired you to become a director? A lot of what I wanted to do in life became clear to me from when I was a child. I was always into fashion and I’ve always loved movies and cameras. I’m also a very visual person and a big part of my passion is bringing my ideas to life and sharing them with people. Tell us about some of your favourite projects that you did? I’ve done a lot of big projects, but the most that I have enjoyed were on the fashion front. My favourite collaborations would have to be BVLGARI in 2014 and more recently, Ray-ban. You seem like a fashionable guy. How did you get into fashion blogging and style? I’ve always wanted to find new ways to express myself and my style. So at the early days of blogging, I decided to talk about fashion behind the screen. Additionally, I have taken a diploma in fashion history to further feed my curiosity about fashion. What is your go-to style? I simply throw on a denim jacket on top of an all-black outfit for an everyday look. I would say you are a shoes person, what’s your favourite brand and why? I wouldn’t say I favour one brand over another as I mostly look at the style and build of any shoe that I wear. But you’ll notice on my feed that most of my kicks are Adidas Originals, for their strictly lifestyle aesthetic.

Let’s talk about social media. You are without a doubt a style influencer. Do you sometimes feel responsible and in pressure to post to your audience? No, I wouldn’t say that. I’ve been doing it for so long, It is now part of my lifestyle, just like one would brush their teeth every day. How would you describe your audience and fans? They are the most supportive follower base. I appreciate everything they do for me. And I don’t take for granted that they consider me an influence to them. What’s a day in the life of Abdulaziz looks like? Every day is different in its own way, but there are some constants: Back to back meetings, catching up on e-mails, photoshoots, and lots of other things. It never gets boring. What are your favourite fashion brands that you rock? My all-time favourite is Alexander Mcqueen. Other than that, I’m big on finding upcoming designers and supporting them in every country I travel to. Which one matters the most? The brand you wear or the style? Definitely the style, it reflects your story as a person and your individuality. What are your future plans? Where can we see Abdulaziz in a few years? I’d like to start my own collection, that’s the next step for me. I’m really excited for that chapter of my life. —salim@timesofoman.com

ARCHERY AT ANANTARA

THE TALE OF AN ASPIRING ARCHER STORY ANTARA BOSE

W

hen I was asked to pick my activities at Anantara, I was thrilled to find that apart from the conventional touristy things, there were some recreational activities that were a little offbeat. Like archery! Though Robin Hood was as far as my knowledge got with the sport, there was something distinctly charming about archers. One of the oldest arts, archery has evolved with the evolution of the humankind itself and even though archers don’t really go into the war field anymore, it still holds a commendable place even at the Olympics. Confident that I’d take some impressive shots, little did I know archery would teach me more than just the game. There come those points in life, when you realise how delusional your thoughts about the own self are and I had my virtual-world-meets-worldly-reality moment right there. The majestic archer who had taken the most distant of shots with such ease, grace and poise on the Playstation was now struggling to hold the bow straight. I was so glad my virtual disciples weren’t there to see this and instantly made a mental note to never begin another sport with that all-knowing nod (In my defence, the virtual games were pretty life-like). Bidding my self-proclaimed toxophilite stature a humble goodbye, I decided to get my hands on (not the controllers) and learn this noble sport that I had been quite keen on trying. On a side note, I also understood why the aged relatives would snort at the thought of playing football on a screen as opposed to meadows under the sun.

VOLUME 10 ISSUE 81 AUGUST 3, 2017

The archery range at Anantara is spread over a wellspaced area that apart from giving us ample place to make mistakes, gave the distinct sense of actually being in the right atmosphere for this sport – out in the open. The view of the not-so-distant rocky mountains that met a horizon of clear blue sky formed the perfect backdrop. Our instructor, a jovial young man, who took great enthusiasm in the sport and teaching amateurs like us, went from the basics of maintaining the right body posture to even the working of the bow and arrow. After slipping on an arm guard, which we were told was worn to protect the archer from bow snaps, we were briefed on how to place the arrow. I learned that the coloured feathers had a meaning — of the three feathers, the one coloured different (cock feather) faces the archer, while the others face away. Placing the ‘nock’ of the arrow (a groove at the rear of the arrow) to the ‘nocking point’ on the bowstring, my opponent and I took aim. ‘Stand, Hold and Aim’ — that was the course to follow; and we followed; however, with a result significantly less satisfactory than what our instructor had demonstrated earlier. A more careful attention to the rule of three while aiming however yielded remarkable results. The three primary points to look though were the ‘nocking point’, the ‘point of arrow’ and the ‘centre of target’. Standing at a 90-degree angle to the target, I lifted the bow, pulled back the string until my index finger reached my chin, the string almost touching my nose, closed one eye to align my three points and without waiting until I start quivering like jelly, I drew a shot. To my own amaze, I managed a bull’s eye! To this day, I maintain my humility

and say it was a bit of luck. Now fairly comfortable with keeping my arms straight while shooting, establishing the right amount of pull on the bowstring and shooting relatively closer to the targets, we got ready for a competition. Our proud instructor, who was initially quite paranoid of my arrows sailing over the walls, now confidently placed additional arrows on the stand for the consecutive rounds. My opponent had taken on a decent lead, but archery was just too exciting to get enviously competitive. Our deciding shot was a moving target. Although I wouldn’t shoot anything that moved, a non-living object like the bobbing balloon which had now placed itself strategically on the board and seemed to sneer at my capabilities was perfectly acceptable. Sadly, I never really got to burst its smirking face as my opponent got to his balloon first. Not brooding over the loss in the game, the only remorse I felt was that we were done. Probably the most exciting of the recreation activities at the resort, in my opinion, the 60-minute session had me all charged up like I was ready to take on a battalion with the skill I’d mastered with my new found weapon; though that really wouldn’t have been the wisest of decisions. More than just refreshing, I realised the sport was strangely quite de-stressing and I was pretty certain all that lifting and aiming had burnt a significant amount of the morning cupcakes calories I had downed. I was told it works to strengthen the back and tone the upper body too, but my thoughts were elsewhere. There I was, standing at Diana Point overlooking the expansive plateaus below, effortlessly flicking a glistening arrow, sending it slicing through the silent mountain air, bull’s eye at my target. Was I just being dreamy, or was it my new found sports addiction! (60-minute archery sessions are available daily and are limited to six guests per range. The activity is however subject to weather conditions and prior reservations are recommended). —hiweekend@timesofoman.com For details, call Anantara Resort, Jabal Akhdar on +968 2521 8000

BEAUTY

ALL FOR THE LOVE OF THOSE LOCKS Well, because those natural remedies don’t conjure instant Rapunzel locks and we totally understand that you have a schedule that can make Kendall Jenner feel like she’s not doing enough. But hair care and styling are still important, right? Simple modifications to things you already do (but probably just not do right) won’t add on to your minutes and might even save you from having to compromise your Schumacher skills while you multi-task your way to work. We’ve put together some great ‘in and out of shower’ hair tips, styling tricks, and things you really need to stop doing so that you aren’t frantically yanking off those tangled knots. STORY ANTARA BOSE

Swap hot with cold While warm water is perfect for soaking, it really doesn’t do much good to your hair. If you really can’t do without a little steam escaping from the shower, turn the tap to cold at least when you are rinsing off your conditioner and just before you step out. The cold water will seal the hair follicles and prevent hair fall.

Ponytail lift Why is it so hard to get a ponytail to just stay perky? Don’t let a loose, limp and low-hanging ponytail bring down your spirit. After tying a regular ponytail, turn the ponytail to bring it in front of your face and secure from beneath with a few sprayed bobby pins at a height from where you’d like your ponytail to fall. See, not all lifts are as complicated as a face lift.

Manage bangs Oily scalp making your bangs go flat and no time for another shower? Simply tie the rest of your hair back, dilute just a wee bit of shampoo in water and work the lather on only the front part of the scalp. Rinse and dab the excess water off, style and dry to restore that bounce.

Read the labels When it comes to even junk food, we don’t hesitate to flip to the ‘Nutritional Information’ to see what and how much we are downing, then why make it different for hair products. What we put on our head is what our hair absorbs and reacts to, very much like our body. Watch out for the sulphate content as this, while thoroughly cleansing, can also strip hair off natural oils making them dry. Opt for shampoos that are enriched with conditioners, especially natural ones.

Detangling in the shower It’s a bad idea! Especially if you bring your comb along and aren’t using any products to assist you in the process. Hair strands are most fragile when wet and can break easily. The safer option is using oodles of conditioner and finger-detangling very gently. Hair-clogged drains (followed by wails) – avoided!

Comb before a bath We bet our silky tresses you’ve been doing this the other way around. As much of a practice that it is to comb your hair after

VOLUME 10 ISSUE 81 AUGUST 3, 2017

HI WEEKLY

15

a shower, you’d be surprised with how less of tangles you really need to battle if you start with combing it before you head in for a bath. When interacting with water, hair strands tend to only entangle further if they’ve already started on the road to unruliness; and you really don’t want to get into the detangle spree then (refer to point 3)! Braid and iron Own a hair iron but can’t seem to ace even those simple waves? Worry not! Start with separating your locks evenly into smaller sections and braid tight. Bring out that flat iron and simply press on the braids. Not only does this make managing those locks easier, but is also a lot quicker and results in perfectly acquired beach waves. Tame flyaways with a sprayed toothbrush You can let your roommate gawk at you but nothing works better than a toothbrush sprayed with a little hairspray to tame frizzy hair. Though we may permit you to keep this brush in the washroom cabinet, please make sure you don’t get in the habit of interchanging your tooth-brushing-toothbrush with your hairbrushing-toothbrush. Honestly, that’s not even funny. Change to a more luxurious bedspread We’ll actually give you a reason apart from luxury to swap your cotton bed linen to something fancier. If not the entire set, swap your cotton pillow cases with vegan-made satin sheets (‘vegan’ because it’s a cheaper alternative and won’t make you feel like you’re lying on poor silkworms). The softness of the texture reduces the friction that would otherwise result from harsher fabrics, therefore smoothening frizzy hair and minimising static. Do a double ponytail Forget extensions and teased hair; to make hair look longer and more voluminous, tie two ponytails – one higher up and one slightly lower. The one below will be concealed by the one above and will make it look like you have longer, fuller locks. This trick works great for people with mid-length, slightly curly hair. Keep a serum-spray in hand If you need to soothe dry hair, opt for some leave-in serum and instead of rubbing it in, simply spritz. Start from the middle of your length, and work downwards. Spraying will ensure you don’t accidentally get too much in one spot and won’t leave your hands feeling grimy. Bedtime braids = Morning waves Don’t waste your precious morning hours with those curlers. If you have taken a shower before bedtime, braid loosely and let the night style your hair while you rest in sweet slumber. In the morning, just undo the braids, scrunch your hair with your fingers and spray on some holding spray to make your natural waves last longer. Alternatively, if you’ve skipped the shower, braid your hair real tight with ribbons and repeat the same procedure in the morning. Make sure not to comb your hair too harsh, especially if you have sleek, straight hair naturally. Invest in a good haircut It might take a few hours from your busy schedule but it’s truly worth the time. Getting a haircut that doesn’t need to be styled after every shower and (the best one) can be air-dried to its glorious self, is exactly what the busy woman of today needs. If your hair is thin, opting for cuts like layers or feathers can even give the illusion of more volume. Accessorise instead of style Bored of the same hairdo but lack styling skills? Bring in the accessories. Not only does it save your hair from the damaging effects of curlers, it’s way quicker too. Add some swanky, funshaped bobby pins or style with a bandana or head band on days when your hair isn’t feeling in the best of its bouncy spirit. Vitamins Sometimes all your hair needs is a little supplement boost. Ask your doctor to prescribe you some vitamin tablets that will aid hair growth. Clearly, the shortcut; because who has the time to analyse their diet, go grocery shopping and cook some healthy vegetables, right? — HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

STORY SHRUTHI NAIR PHOTOS SHABIN E, SHUTTERSTOCK

There are three important steps to recovering from a disease or an ailment – identification, treatment, and rehabilitation. But don’t we always stop at step two? It’s time to take a step forward.

VOLUME 10 ISSUE 81 AUGUST 3, 2017

B National Medical Services (Medical Rehabilitation Centre) Muscat Way 1557, Villa 2768 Madinat Al Ilam, Muscat +968 2209 4265 oman@rochesterwellness.com

lessed are those who haven’t been in a painful accident or had to endure the physical or emotional pain of coping with a prolonged disease. While we might have met a number of patients and survivors who have recounted their ordeals with a forlorn melancholy in their eyes, there are many among them who could be having a hard time dealing with various issues ranging from post-traumatic stress, mental health problems, loss, or even old age. They might seem like they are in the right frame of mind and getting along with life, but are they? Recently, we heard about National Medical Services, Medical Rehabilitation Centre an organisation in Oman that deals with such patients and to learn more about what they do, we decided to pay them a visit. Nestled in an open area of Madinat Al Ilam, National Medical Services, Medical and Rehabilitation Centre’s, main gate opens to four villas — four warm and welcoming homes. I walked straight through the door in front of me and found a few men sitting on a sofa and chatting. One of them, who was on a wheelchair, came up to me and said that he worked there and while we waited for the right person to acquaint us with the place we started talking to him and he explained how he was once a patient and now works as a receptionist there. I was soon asked to go to the 4th villa where I met Merlyn, the manager, who explained all about the services they provide.

National Medical Services, Medical and Rehabilitation Centre Muscat, is a facility that provides specialised noninvasive rehabilitation services including medical consultations, nursing care, nutrition services, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, and more to children, adults, and senior citizens in an environment that is more like a home than a hospital. The patients, called guests or visitors here, can spend some quality time recovering from their diseases and its side effects comfortably by taking their own time. The centre has various facilities ranging from private rooms, gyms, speech therapy, and medication rooms which the guests can use depending on their needs. The 32 member team including doctors, nurses, managers, and helpers make sure that the guests feel very much at home and realise that what they need more than anything is to feel that there are people around who care and to instil the strength and willingness to fight. They also provide a range of aids including customised prosthetics, wheelchairs, and special footwear that the guests can buy or use. Apart from palliative care for the elderly, National Medical Services, also serves as a day care for older men and women who need to be taken care of. It is extremely pleasing to see that even today, in the so-called modern age, there are people looking after their old parents, grandparents, and in-laws. However, there are times when they feel stranded and bound especially when they have to travel. At such times, a homecare centre like this comes to the rescue where it happily takes in guests and keeps them for days, weeks, or even months. The guests are provided with therapy sessions, medical consultations, accommodation, and food but most importantly, as Meryl points out, they are encouraged to come out of their rooms and interact with fellow visitors and guests of their own age, especially in the evening at the outdoor Majlis where they can converse freely under the stars. Such rehabilitation centres are a necessity in today’s society in order to help manage one’s emotional and social needs. It is also necessary for the caregivers to have a better understanding of taking care of those who have undergone treatment and require optimum after care or just the elderly whose physical capabilities are diminishing by the day due to age. However, it is the flexibility of this facility that makes it more attractive. People of any age group, recovering from any disease can avail the services on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. They can either be there with a family member or be dropped there alone, can go as visitors for a few hours or choose to stay as guests. The homecare provides the best of both worlds, where the atmosphere is homely and at the same time you have easy access to medical staff and facilities. As an industry, rehabilitation and healthcare services is an extremely essential segment of the society. They are in high demand and could help in shaping trends, mentality, and approach towards healthcare in a country. — shruthi@timesofoman.com
