T
he thought of spending an hour or two in a quaint place amidst flickering candles, soothing music, and aroma is the ultimate luxury for me in my frenzied world. It must be the same for those who spend their whole week hopping from one chore to another and finally when the weekend mood sets in all they want is to sneak in some ‘me time’ to escape from the daily stresses of life. So on a sultry weekend afternoon I walked inside Six Senses Spa, the spa at Al Bustan Palace, as after a tiresome week all I wanted was to send my senses into full retreat, far away from reality. While Al Bustan Palace is currently closed for renovation, the spa which is just five minutes’ walk from the hotel, reopened recently and can be your perfect weekend getaway to rubdown all the stress that you gathered throughout the week. It was no different for me. At the reception as I filled the form furnishing my personal details , a must in every spa, I looked around the aesthetically done interiors. Serenity sets in as soon as you step inside the majestic entrance of the spa. Six Senses Spa is one of those places where you get the forget-the-world-and-its-everything kind of feeling, a place to indulge all your senses. Without much delay I was ushered towards the treatment room and after keeping my belongings in the locker I was all set for an hour long rejuvenation. ‘Leave your stress at the door please’, I could hear my inner voice telling me as I reclined on the bed for the treatment. My treatment for the day was Six Senses-
Signature Massage. At Six Senses, the signature massages that are for about 50/80 minutes, are done according to one’s preferences and requirement. While the deep tissue is oil-based massage to ease muscle tension where silicone cups are used to lift connective tissue and improve blood flow to sluggish skin and muscles, the other options are detox, energiser, or a soothing holistic massage. I opted for energiser massage that is specific for back and shoulder aches. To begin with, a hot towel was gently rubbed on my aching feet, and with soft music playing in the background, thoughts of work and other mundane concerns just melted away. Later as my therapist gently massaged my scalp with her magical fingers I almost dozed off. Someone who forever complains of headaches felt a soothing relief with the right pressure on my forehead. The indulgence went up a notch when she eased my niggling backache and shoulder stiffness by her gentle massage by giving little extra pressure on those specific areas that needed attention. In an hour’s time I could feel the difference as my tired muscles felt relaxed and the pain was tamed too. Suffused with energy I stepped out of Six Senses Spa, fully refreshed and rejuvenated. There are various other treatment options at the spa that is currently offering some attractive summer deals. These include special massages for couples, Thai yoga massage, body scrub, body wrap, and more. Pick up the one that suits you for the ultimate restorative experience. —swati@timesofoman.com

I
’ve always struggled when it came to losing weight and as lazy as a toad about going for workouts. Gym visits wasn’t fun ever as I hated running on the treadmill for hours. I wasn’t a fan of lifting weights either. But all my struggles came to an end when I recently joined a spin class. It’s a game changer that will help you get in shape and keep you entertained too. Spin class or spinning is an intense group workout that uses stationary bikes specifically designed for indoor cycling. A typical spin class will have a stationary bike that has a variety of cycling speeds, seated and standing options with designated handles, resistance that simulate flat lands and high hills, as well as a certified instructor who will be giving you a strict regime in varying fitness levels. This cardiovascular exercise suits all ages, and is perfect for both beginners and cycling experts. And, the best part is, they spin fast while jamming to heart-pumping beats of dance music. Where did it all start? The concept of indoor spinning studio came to existence in the late 1980s by cyclist Johnny Goldberg (also known as Johnny G), who is an endurance athlete from South Africa, living in California. Johnny was getting ready for his upcoming race across America. He had his cycling kit but felt that he needed some sort of a routine, a workout plan, that he could stick to even in the worst of weather. His idea of bringing outdoors in was given a shot during winter where he built an indoor stationary bike that had weighted flywheels that looks and works just like a normal bike. He succeeded. He spent 10 years experimenting and developing the workout, making it a proper cardiovascular routine, which is now known as spinning. With the help of his partner John Bauduin, he released his first stationary bike in 1993 in New York. Today, the invention has become an equipment that’s used around the globe. The benefits of a spin class are countless. First, it is an intense calorie-burning workout; 45 minutes of the bike can kill off more than 500 calories, depending on the level of intensity. Second, it builds and tones the muscles. Yes, the workout focuses on core muscles with extra attention to thighs and buttocks. You will work your thighs as you pedal, and if you are riding the bike correctly, then you will also hit abdominal muscles. Third, it is a low-impact exercise as it does not put pressure on knees and joints in comparison to running or other aerobic exercises. For other honourable mention, it works as a stress reliever. It can also increase and strengthen your cardio endurance. In Oman, the workout is getting popular, and it is safe to say that it has grown in the past decades due to its fun-filled sessions that end up building a community of spinners. To me, it’s a zumba workout with wheels that requires a lot of stamina, but I love every minute of it, as it is the only workout that I drip off a gallon of sweat. One of my favourite places to put in the work is at Flex Gym, where they have a room dedicated to spinning. The gym offers a variety of classes but spinning is the one you shouldn’t miss. How about you give it a spin this weekend? Flex got multiple locations. Join the family. Join the spinners. — salim@timesofoman.com

One cup of chopped eggplant has only 20 calories and 11 per cent of your daily fibre needs. They are not just purple in colour but can also be white or yellow and the first variety of the vegetable that was discovered was egg shaped, hence the name...

ou might be wondering why we have started educating on eggplants all of a sudden. Well, that’s because I just visited a big, cosy eggplant and dined there like there’s no tomorrow. Melanzane, meaning eggplant, is a restaurant that opened in Shatti Al Qurum a few months back and while the food they serve is abundantly delicious, the first impression it casts is truly impressive. As I reached the restaurant I noticed that the words on the signage were all inverted but I didn’t delve too much into it thinking that it was probably just some funky font design that was beyond my understanding. Inside, the restaurant was not like any other in the area. It was different as it exuded a rustic energy. The décor was unique with its raw, edgy look, and the very efficient staff, Kirk, explained at length about the little details. As I looked around I realised that it was not just the name but a lot of other things inside the restaurant that were kept upside down. The chairs, most of which were purple (the colour of eggplant), were inverted. The ceiling lights were actually in the shape of tables hanging upside down. However, the weirdest were the walls that looked unfinished. It didn’t look unattractive at all to me because I’ve always loved ragged patterns and textures. But it was just strange as the restaurant has been open for a few months now and it’s unusual to have an unfinished decor. This, Kirk explained, was symbolic of the restaurant’s food, like everything else.

“The food here is in a continuous process of evolution. We are just never satisfied and know that there is always room for improvement. Hence, the walls are unfinished and the restaurant looks as though it is still under construction to resonate the same feeling,” he explained. “In fact, even the waiters are given costumes like construction workers as they work hard to maintain a building,” he added. After taking in all this information and being thoroughly impressed by the thought that has been put into conceptualising this quirky eatery, I soon went back to my point of interest, the food. The cuisine served at Melenzane is not just plain Italian. It’s Italian but with a modern twist served in different flavours and the upside-down décor and the flipped alphabets on the plate font reflects that message. I started scrolling through the menu in the tab in front of me and knew instantly that this is going to be one of those days when I would be eating more than my stomach could take. I ordered drinks, appetisers, salads, main course, and dessert in one breath. It was a sunny afternoon that day and what I needed most was something that could not just quench my thirst instantly but also please my palate. Colada with coconut milk, blended with vanilla ice cream did just that followed by Kiki Salad. It was a bowl filled with the tastiest and not just the healthiest greens. With avocado, shrimps, parmesan biscuits, and pomegranate, dressed with the juiciest citrus ranch, I figured how this in itself could be my lunch on rare occasions when I felt like eating light and healthy. Since it wasn’t the day, I preyed on my first appetiser – Arancino Palla or stuffed cheese risotto balls. The beauty of this dish is in watching how the cheese oozes out of the crispy balls as you slice through it and don’t even realise how your mouth is uncontrollably watering. And then came Dolcezza, which literally means sweet bites. The sweet and spicy sauce plays the trick and I found myself eating the whole thing, not even sparing the rocco leaves that the shrimps were served on. I jumped onto Scallopini next, quite sure I wasn’t looking civil anymore. Boneless chicken fried with breadcrumbs has always been my weakness. Add to that balsamico mushroom sauce and you will see the plate as clean as new with not a single crumb or a drop of sauce left on it. After having all this I genuinely thought I was done and wished that the dessert didn’t look or taste too great. I didn’t want to go into a food coma. But unfortunately the lotus cheesecake turned out to be the best thing and I could not stop bingeing. For the love of all that’s Italian stop by Melanzane. The flavours will rule your heart. —shruthi@timesofoman.com
