WEEKEND ESCAPE

It is that time of the year when the dry brown mountains of Dhofar region turns into resplendent green. As another Khareef beckons us, Salalah once again becomes Oman’s coolest destination to visit during the summers. Be it the crisp unpolluted air, the cool misty clime, the high rolling seas or the thick carpet of greenery all around, Salalah is a must visit place during Khareef. So wait no further and plan a weekend getaway to this land of greenery, showers, and serenity. STORY MUNTASIR SHAABAN SALEH AL FARSY

VOLUME 10 ISSUE 80 J U LY 2 7, 2 0 1 7

K

hareef is a colloquial Arabic term used in Southern Oman, South Eastern Yemen, and Sudan for the South East Monsoon. When the whole of Arabia experiences a sweltering heat, Salalah becomes the ideal getaway during Khareef that ends in September. While there are many idyllic places to visit throughout the year here are some of the must visit places during Khareef season. Wadi Dawkah This is a natural park of famous frankincense trees, and Unesco inscribed as the World Heritage Site. Located around 40 kilometres North of Salalah on Salalah-Thumrait-Muscat Highway, this is a habitat for Boswellia sacra type of frankincense trees and the trees are spread across 5 square kilometres. Also visit the Frankincense Museum. Nature’s Bounty One of the main attractions that tourists look for during

Khareef is the waterfalls and it depends on the amount of rain. To name a few, Ayn Tabouk and Ayun Athum are located on the road to Nashib and the latter is the most beautiful of all. It is easily accessible too. Historical Sites While nature’s bounty draws visitors to Salalah during Khareef the ancient historical sites that’s frequently visited throughout the year is a huge attraction during Khareef. While the tomb of Prophet Ayoub (Pbuh) is often visited another burial shrine is of Prophet Imran (Pbuh) in Salalah. The remains of Queen of Sheba’s Summer Palace is a place to visit and this is where her precious resin cargo was shipped to King Solomon. It is in Sumhuram previously known as Khor Rori and this small fortified town was an outpost for the kingdom. One of the lost ancient frankincense sites is Shisr, Ubar, of which Lawrence of Arabia called , “the Atlantis of the Sands’’ and there is a reference in the Holy Quran as IraamdhatilImaad meaning “City of Towers’’. It is 85km north-east of Thumrait and rediscovered

in 1992 by scientific methods. Taqah Castle, despite being relatively the most recent, is worth seeing due to its past history. The Castle had been built in the 19th century. Take time to visit the Al Balid Ruins and marvel at the old residential areas, stone-shaped artefacts, and Al Balid fort. To get a sense of Salalah’s rich history visit the Mirbat Castle. The Khareef Festival It is held in Salalah each year with music and dance performances from different regions of Oman as well as singers from outside. In addition, an exhibition and sale of Omani handicrafts, sports, and other events are held. Zanooj dance, which involves a cast of thousands is a spectacular sight. How to Go There are daily flights and buses between Muscat and Salalah. You can also drive from Muscat to Salalah which takes roughly around 12 hours. —hiweekend@timesofoman.com

ROCOMAMAS

SUCCULENT SMASHBURGERS STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY SALIM AL AFIFI

I

’ve been a regular diner at RocoMamas ever since they opened late last year, and I enjoy every bit of my messybut-worth-it burger experience whenever I step a foot into the restaurant. Why? Simply because this South African franchise is the business; serving gourmet burgers and barbecued ribs that give us an all-American classic with flavours to remember. Dining here is always a good time, from the jolly waiters who wait by the door to greet you with big smiles, to the energy that the place offers to its diners. This weekend I decided to give the readers a peek into my absolute favourite burger joint in town, and dive deep into their menu and their juicy offerings. As you reach the place, you can decide to either sit outdoors by the shady trees, or inside. Given this lovely Parisian weather in Muscat, taking a seat indoors seems like a no-brainer. When entering the place, you’d quickly realise how vibrant the place is,

even if it has a few people it still gives that vibe that makes you want to just hang out and chill. The interior at RocoMamas is one of the reasons that keep me coming back here week after week. It’s ubercool and it has a mix of flashy orange and jet black colours. It occupies a space that appears to be a marriage of an industrial warehouse and an art studio, hence the contemporary minimalistic lights. To top it all off, the walls are decorated with bricked walls and mosaic carpets with mirror accents that read ‘smash’ in the restaurant’s colour code. And, the place has an open live kitchen where you could see the chefs working their magic on the meat as you wait for it. The interior can be summed up in one word: Stunning. Once you have a sit, the waiters will hand you the menu in the form of a paper and a pen, and ask you to fill in your order. You can either select burgers or ribs. Now, the choices are endless, you can select a burger from the menu or you can customise

your very own burger from top to bottom with a variety of interesting toppings such as pineapple salsa, blue cheese dressing, caramelised onions, sweet pickles, and fried eggs. Or, you can go simple and order yourself a rack of ribs. Being a regular customer here, I almost tried everything from their menu, and without being biased the stuff taste great. I’ll dive into some of the dishes that I truly loved off their menu. Let’s kick it off with the starter of all starters: The chilli con carne fries, a massive basket of French fries topped with piquant ground beef and a bunch of cheese. This is the pinnacle of all fries; the fries serve a soft-but-crunchy taste, and the dripping sauces mingle their way to the bottom of the basket, giving you the French-inspired poutine dish of a lifetime. Note that the portion is humongous, so sharing is caring. For the mains I usually come here starving, so I tend to order straight from the menu. You can select your protein (chicken or beef ) or go vegetarian and take a vegetable burger. My go-to order is beef bacon cheese guac, a thick, juicy patty (called smash here) topped with smoky, crispy beef bacon, molten aged cheddar, tomato, and a couple of red onion rings, with chilli mayonnaise and a spread of fresh in-house guacamole. The crispiness of bacon and the creaminess of avocado, mixed with the juices of the beef makes this a number one option for me. Another burger that’s super is the chilli cheez bomb, beef patty topped with crispy beef bacon, a bunch of cheeses including aged cheddar and mozzarella, with fresh chillis and a spread of chilli mayonnaise. This is for those who enjoy a mildly spiced up cheesy burger. The taste is fantastic. My third option is wild bill, a burger made for those who love a burst of flavours. It’s made of a juicy patty topped with chilli con carne, cheddar, jalapeños, and nachos. Savouring this Spanish-inspired burger is a joy; full of crisps and juices. Not a fan of sandwiched patties? How about smoky ribs. When it comes to taste, the ribs at RocoMamas are the real deal, just delicious. You can choose either beef or lamb. I usually take beef ribs as they taste extra-delicious. The ribs are melt-inyour-mouth tender, with classic barbecue sauce. The smoky taste is to die for. The dish is so tasty that taking half a portion will only lead to regret. Go big or go home on this one. For desserts, I love their upside down cheesecake, served in a glass, as well as their dense chocolate mousse. Both taste great and worth trying. RocoMamas is one of those places that will be a favourite once you try, and believe me, you will be coming back here on ritual basis. Getting down and dirty with the patties in a goodvibes-only atmosphere? sign me up. —salim@timesofoman.com

illennium Resort Mussanah isn’t really a hidden gem. You see the board every time you’re driving towards Sohar or Dubai and in spite of being very interested to know what it actually looks like I never actually had the time for a little detour. But last weekend, I finally decided to spend a whole day in Millennium Resort. I left home at 10am as against 8am, as was planned, because fashionably late. The road was beautiful and I enjoyed driving along the route but was surprised to reach in less than an hour-and-a-half. Millennium Resort isn’t far at all and for someone who is geographically challenged like I am, I managed to find my way easily. The resort is a beautiful huge property with 234 rooms, a gym, five swimming pools, a huge children’s area, the recreation tower, the best spa I’ve seen in a while, and three restaurants. While it looks gorgeous right from the entrance, what the rear end holds will take your breath away. All rooms overlook the huge marina that is beautified by huge trees in a semi-circular pattern that brings the soft breeze to the hotel. The first thing that I noticed as I stepped into the lobby was the faint aroma, which was subtle and not intrusive but strong enough that one couldn’t miss it. The fragrance was welcoming enough and we didn’t really need a big board that said ‘Welcome’ or even people rushing to us to welcome us in. It was powerful enough. I obviously couldn’t stop myself on seeing the hints of blue and green and kept walking ahead out of the back doors from where I could see the Marina. I was enjoying the view but the afternoon sun was a little too harsh to bear so I decided to go to my room and freshen before I could explore the resort again. My spacious suite room was cosy and exactly the way I wanted it to be. With the kitchen that I never used, a huge hall where I worked with the work desk and a sofa facing towards the TV, as comfy-as-a-teddy bed, a decent bathroom with a bath tub and other essentials and finally a balcony overlooking the view I had been craving for. After having a long hot bath, reading a chapter from Palace of Illusions sitting on the balcony while sipping on my

horribly made coffee, and finishing some office work, I decided it was time to go around to know the resort well. On hearing that the jacuzzi is complimentary for all those who are staying at the resort, that is where I headed first. But it wasn’t just the awesome mystical-feeling jacuzzi that I discovered there. That was the spa section of the resort that homed an array of massage and spa treatment options for the guests ranging from the simple body massages to the more complex ayurvedic massages that worked on a completely different mechanism with a wooden bed instead of a mattress and oil dripping directly on to the forehead from the little earthen pot hanging above the sleeping head. But what I loved most about this area was the mysterious feel it had. The corridor was like that of a maze and each door was like a secret room found. It was now time for me to meet the General Manager Christoph Schleissing, a vibrant experienced man who had a vision for not just the resort but also for bringing adventure sports and sport

tourism to the country. He realises the potential of this beautiful country and is determined to make use of his resource, which is the resort, to introduce as many adventure sport activities as possible. But quality and safety would be given paramount importance. The tall recreation tower that already held the zipline cables would be home to more activities and the vast marina would be busy with water sports ranging from parasailing, kayaking, and many other sailing activities. I then walked on to the lawn past one of the swimming pools in the resort to the kids area adorned with swings, slides, wall climbers, small hammocks, and a mini golf course. After trying my hand at golf and playing some table tennis, my stomach started growling and I headed to Mydan, one of the restaurants that served stupendous continental dishes. Soon I went back to my suite, which felt like home, had a quick shower and curled up on my bed with curtains open and TV switched on and dozed off peacefully. — shruthi@timesofoman.com

is also special because you don’t really have to treat it like a resort always. Instead of spending a night there you can even opt to just spend a whole day and use the other day board facilities which includes some very interesting activities available at the resort. Here are some of the must try activties. Zipline: This is, perhaps, the only place in Oman where you can try this adventure sport in the safest and most thrilling way. Feel the adrenaline. Zayna Spa: Make sure you pay a visit to this mystical maze space that houses the different spa options, even if you are not in a mood for a massage. You will not be able to resist yourself from trying one of the expert massages after the tour. Jacuzzi: This comes complimentary with the room. This is the perfect place to de-stress and put all your tension behind and just get lost in the gushing warm water in this cosily dark space. Lawn: Just because it may seem like the children’s play area, doesn’t mean it is just for children. Enjoy the swings, hammocks, mini-golf course, table-tennis, and even jump into the pool if you feel too dehydrated after all the activities. FILM TALK

What is 4K for Digital Cinema?

I

f you’ve watched any of the high grade movies off late, chances are that you’ve been watching a 4K digital movie. The Hobbit and Avatar are two such movies that readily come to mind and they must have given you the thrill of your life due to their sharpness and detail, not to mention the stories themselves which were more than above par. So what exactly is 4K? Let’s examine in detail:

James Bond is returning to movie theatres in November 2019, producers said recently, but they did not say who will play Britain’s most famous fictional spy. Meanwhile, actors such as Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston and Tom Hardy have all been named as potential candidates to step into the fast cars and sharply tailored suits of Bond, MI6’s secret agent 007. The new film will be written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.

Canadian director Denis Villeneuve had fended off numerous requests to direct big-budget sequels until he was approached to make a followup to Ridley Scott’s 1982 neonoir sci-fi film Blade Runner. “I accepted to do Blade Runner because it was meaningful,” Villeneuve, the director of last year’s cerebral alien sci-fi film Arrival, told Reuters.

Thor has lost his invincible hammer and Black Panther shoulders the responsibility of being a new king, in exclusive scenes shown from Disney’s Marvel studios’ upcoming superhero movies at San Diego’s Comic-Con. One of the most high-profile draws of the annual convention for pop and nerd culture fans, Marvel’s star-studded panel session on Saturday kicked off with Thor: Ragnarok, due in theatres in November.

Jay-Z ruled the Billboard 200 album chart for a second straight week with his confessional album 4:44, while California alt-rock band surged back into the Top 20 after the suicide last week of frontman Chester Bennington. Jay-Z’s 4:44, in which he admits and regrets cheating on his wife Beyonce, sold another 86,000 copies, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan.

‘Game of Thrones’ author teases two possible new books in 2018. Author George R.R. Martin has hinted at the possibility of not one but two new Game of Thrones books in 2018, whetting the appetites of fans who have been waiting for the next installment of the epic saga since 2011. Martin, whose A Song of Ice and Fire novels were adapted into HBO’s hit medieval fantasy series Game of Thrones, currently is working on the sixth installment, Winds of Winter.

After shaking a leg with Shah Rukh Khan in Raees, actress Sunny Leone will be doing a special number for Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film Bhoomi. Sunny will be shooting for the song titled Trippy Trippy next month. The song has been composed by music director duo Sachin-Jigar with lyrics penned by Priya Saraiya. Ganesh Acharya will choreograph the dance number. “I have been working on it with director Omung Kumar sir and Ganesh sir.”

What is digital cinema? Digital cinema means using digital tech to either distribute or project motion pictures (animated or non-animated) in contrast to using the traditional 35mm film reels. The old reels had to be shipped from production houses to the movie theatres. But digital movies can be distributed in a variety of ways; via satellites, through the internet, or by using storage devices like hard drives, DVD’s, and Blu-ray discs. However there’s a difference between digital cinema and 4K digital cinema. The difference You must have seen high definition television. These shows on TV use 2K resolution which means a horizontal count of 2048 X 1080 i.e. 2.2 megapixels. When you see a 4K movie in theatres, you’re treated to an immersive experience of 4096 X 2160 megapixels. And that’s a whopping pixel count. 4K resolution When we speak of 4K resolution, it has to have a horizontal pixel count of at least 4000 pixels. There are a whole bunch of 4K resolutionsavailable and you can find them everywhere. For example,Digital Cinema Initiatives or DCI is dominant in the field of film making, while for consumer shows and television, the standard is normally 4K UHD or UHD-1. Negative scanning and its positive side When you have your film ready and ready to be scanned, it’s always preferable to go in for negative scanning. When you film negative scanning, the benefits are enormous. Firstly, scanning the negatives will yield you a greater part of the actual image that you shot on your film camera because the question of cropping does not arise. You can check out the difference by sending in your film to us for 4K negative scanning. The results will let you judge with your own eyes the level of detail and colour that 4K negative scanning yields. This is the second difference between traditional film scanning and 4K negative scanning. Traditional film scanning versus 4K film scanning: When you’ve put in your blood, sweat and tears (not to mention valuable time) into a film that could make or break you, it makes better sense to go for 4K digital scanning. The film will digitise better at 4K than at 2K. And you’ll have the benefit of timelessness to the film which generations after you can watch in enjoyment due to high detail and colour. —Artipot
