THE FUN HAS JUST BEGUN STORY SHRUTHI NAIR
I
t was on a quiet afternoon when I was at the Oman Avenues Mall shopping when I heard distant screams coming from somewhere within the mall. As I kept ascending the floors, the screams started getting louder. But for a change there was something about those screams that didn’t creep me out, instead got me going towards it. They weren’t actually the petrified screeches but were more like sounds of thrill and excitement. If you are in Oman, then you’ve definitely been to the Oman Avenues Mall and if you have been in the mall then it is not very likely for you to have missed Funtazmo, the indoor amusement park, which happens to be the largest in the country. A new addition to this amusement haven is the roller coaster that is sure to be the key attraction of the park. Located on the second floor, with a double height space, the roller coaster overshadows the place by its enormity. The 274 metre long coaster travels at a speed of 9.5 m/s and can accommodate 16 people at one time. Being a fan of speed and thrill, I got excited when I saw this black beast zoom past me. I got into a cart after purchasing the ticket and held on to the railing bar securing me to the seat. It started off slow and smooth to gather speed by the second until suddenly we hit the first inversion, followed by drop, followed by a climb to a steeper drop. There were multiple twists and even a whole 180 degree turn, which is when I could not keep my mouth shut and screech found its way out of my mouth. I was a little embarrassed as the kid sitting next to me was calmly enjoying the ride without shedding a hint of fear at all. I was disheartened when the ride came to an end but the 60 seconds I spent on the ride did feel much longer and I did feel more alive and gushed even when I was off it. The complete action can be viewed from two galleries across the centre – one located on the same floor and the other on the third floor giving a bird’s eye view of all the fun taking place inside. Roller coaster and other rides at Funtazmo can be availed by grabbing a gaming card at the customer service desk located at the entry to Funtazmo, which you can preload with however much money you choose plus additional free extra load. Games and ride prices start from 450 baisas. —shruthi@timesofoman.com

Hussain Jassim, 29, a fashion enthusiast and traveller from Kuwait who owns a successful online business and blog titled ‘Style Scandals’, enjoys sharing his moments with the world. So how does this dapper gentleman keep his swagger in a perpetual dashing mode? Let’s find out. I N S T A G R A M

IN STYLE What inspired you to start Style Scandals blog? I would say different international fashion bloggers such as Mariano Di Vaio, Adam Gallagher, Chiara Ferragni. If we look back a couple of years there wasn’t much focus and awareness towards men’s fashion in the Gulf, which is now changing, and that makes me happy that at one point I was part of this change.
Running a blog is somewhat a full-time job that requires continuous attention. Do you get bored or dead beat at times? Not really, I get to meet different people, hear different stories, and try to get the best out of everything to improve my own. There is always a room for opportunities. And I truly enjoy it a lot.
What influences your daily posts? Usually I like to focus on a couple of things, stuff that people want to see, and subjects that we want the people to see and benefit from; and of course, latest product releases in our store.
Having visited a lot of cool travel destinations, what are your go-to tips on travelling in style? That’s a tricky question, because before I used to pack like crazy. For example, if am travelling for 20 days only I used to take 20 T-shirts, 15 pants, 10 shorts, 15 shirts, 10 pairs of shoes, 5 sandals, but after travelling a lot you start realising the things you wear and what you exactly need. Usually heavy packing is only for winter clothing. So what I started doing is take items that could be used multiple times and matched with other items so I can try and get 10 outfits from 5 pieces only. This is how I do it. I have a checklist with all items. I take tops that match majority of my pants and shorts. And I do the same with the shoes. I prepare couple of outfits from head to toe to ensure that I am covered for the trip. And, if you are travelling with a friend try and exchange clothes; more outfits, less packing.
You have a huge following from Oman and the GCC, how do you keep them hooked on your posts? I always try and post things that could be beneficial for almost everyone and not try to customise it as per country or region. But I like to give help and support for other GCC countries on things to do or where to go. And try and keep my posts realistic and straight forward.
You’re also a designer for Mandala roundies, how did that come about? I have a big bohemian, hippy gypsy side of me and the Mandala circles are used in different spirituals and meditation. These circles or ‘container of essence’ are said to represent wholeness, health, connection, unity, harmony, and the cycle of life. That’s why when I saw the roundies, poufs and tapestry available in different colours and style I felt that they would be a perfect addition to the store and can be used a lot by customers for the beach, garden, yoga, meditation, and decoration.
Your photos look beautiful and professionally shot. How important is photography as a style blogger? Well photography and videography is the only way we are reaching out to the audience and if the quality of the image wasn’t good it won’t be looked at. Not only that, we like to see new things or creative shots that attracts us and differentiate our styles from others. Personally, I don’t look at unclear videos or photos so I expect others do the same.
Your hair is always on point, and in this hot Gulf weather, you must have a secret remedy? Usually I liked it short in summer but mid or long in winter. Nonetheless, I do like to take care of it every once in a while. I have two haircuts a month and some home hair treatments, good food, and vitamins, too.
What is your go-to style? My go-to-style would be bohemian pastel colours, but I like to dress comfortably when going out and dress up for major events. I would have to say it’s a mix of everything but mostly I believe I can relate to casual chic or smart casual for events.
What have you learned while blogging and social media? I have learned a lot, because in order for you to blog you need to read, experience, and learn lots of things. But I think the most important thing is staying honest and trust worthy to others to maintain your credibility.
One of the perks of being a social media influencer is freebies. What’s it like? It’s a good place to be (laughs). I get to try multiple items from food, cosmetics, clothing, and so many other things. And let’s be honest who doesn’t like gifts. My favourite has to be skincare and cosmetics followed by clothing.
Do you have any tips for a new blogger? Yes, know what you want, have your own style get inspired by others but don’t copy others. Each one of us is unique in their own taste and style. Also ask if you need help, there is nothing wrong with asking or learning from other experiences. —salim@timesofoman.com

10 STYLE TIPS FOR WORK STORY ANTARA BOSE
Who said that we need to reserve the most boring get-up for work? Your work wardrobe needs as much attention as your date nights. We emphasize words like punctuality, dedication, and leadership at the workplace, but many of us often tend to downplay the need for dressing well to work. Even though it isn’t stated explicitly (and as shallow as it may sound), the outward appearance subconsciously does play a role in how you are perceived at work. Though the modern workplace and various creative houses allow more casual apparels, there are still some guidelines to dress for a typical corporate environment.
Colours and prints There is no colour that is particularly a no-no to work. Well, as long as we don’t include fluorescent, neon and shining silver to the list. Bright shades when used to just add that pop of colour to an otherwise dark monotone dress is acceptable; but definitely not a monotone jacket in a bright yellow. Many believe that wearing darker shades radiate a sense of authority at workplace. On the other hand, lighter shades in summer are pleasing to the eye and look pretty fashionable too. As long as you are not severely contrasting everyone else in the office, you are good to go. When it comes to prints, there is a lot you can experiment with. Just because you aren’t bringing out that exclusive totemic printed skirt or that crop top with the trending over-sized flower, doesn’t mean you can’t still play stylish and sport the season’s colours. If you like flowers or stars or any other geometric shape, keep it small. Pinstripes are an evergreen favourite. It is stylish yet formal and can even work to make you look leaner. Vertical stripes give you the illusion of being thinner and even taller. With polka dots however, keep it small and go easy on the accessories as the dots itself do the
job. Pair your stripes or dots with plain coloured apparels for that perfect professional getup. If all fails, go for checks you can never stray too far with those. Jeans Though jeans weren’t generally the ideal option for most corporate offices, it has become fairly common for field days, Thursdays/Saturdays and days when there aren’t any important meetings lined up. Opt for shades in darker colours and wear your jeans ironed to work. Which means you’ll have to leave out those baggy, stone-washed, and ripped jeans for the weekend. Well-fitted clothes in the right material No matter what you wear, make sure the fitting is right. We do firmly believe that office-wear shouldn’t be figure-hugging, but going extra cautious in a dress two sizes larger is going to make you look sloppy. Avoid necklines too deep. Collared shirts, round necks, and button-down dresses are the usual norm. And for the love of all things sartorial, unless it is adequately lined beneath, just steer clear of sheer.

Jewellery When it comes to accessorising at work, keep it simple, classy and most importantly, quiet. Don’t wear bracelets which clang each time you reach for the phone or chains that rattle every time you pass by (you aren’t playing Tinker the cat and don’t need to be belled). Heavy jewellery is considered a distraction at work, even visually. Remember, your jewellery is only meant to complement your work dress, not complicate it. No wet hair Nothing screams ‘I really cannot manage my time’ like wet hair to office does. Yes, there is something enticing about wet hair, but that’s not what we are targeting at the workplace. Those wet stains at the back of the top are far from attractive and definitely not professional. It’d be easier to get away with a tight bun to conceal oily hair, if that is the concern. Nails If you don’t want to be tucking your nails behind a bunch of papers every time someone seems to be fixating on your hand, get a manicure (and pedicure if you are wearing open-toed shoes). It is essential to complete the perfectly-polished look at work. When it comes to nail enamel, you can never go wrong with pastel shades. Dark shades in blues, browns and even purples are common too. Though the office environment now has become more open to an array of shades that are acceptable, you still don’t want to wear colours too loud and be identified as the one with whacky nails. And yes, you can wear reds. Statement bags Before we get into brands and styles, there are some less talked about matters when it comes to bags. Ensure your bag is zipped, so people don’t get to get a sneak-peek of what is inside (they really don’t need to know). Keep your things well-organised inside so you aren’t clumsily fumbling around for things as your client waits upon you. Getting back to the fashion bit, even if you are dressed simple, a nice handbag matched with the right shoes, can add that style statement to your attire almost instantly.
Comfortably stylish shoes No flip-flops to start with, no matter what the office environment. As the name itself, it makes you look floppy. Sandals with open backs have the same effect. On the contrary, wearing 9-inch stilettos to work is going to look a little over the top. If you are wearing a business suit, don’t go for opentoed shoes. Closed heels in neutral shades of not more than 4-inches are your best bet. But wear heels only if you are sure you won’t be hobbling around the entire time; it really defeats the purpose. A good watch Though old-school, it is the best accessory to wear to work and you can never go too wrong with it. Maybe slightly though; like if you decide to wear an elastic, water-spraying watch that belonged to your three-year-old nephew. Rather than bulky fitness watches that beep every time you’ve crossed 1,000 steps, go for dress watches. It shows you value time. A classy timepiece is the most subtle way of making an impression and sometimes also a great conversation starter for a fellow watch aficionado. Light makeup and perfume It’s the same principle for both these items. We definitely recommend wearing both to work, but keep it minimalistic. Besides making you feel uncomfortable, your workplace doesn’t need to know your contouring skills. As for perfume, keep in mind — what might be ecstatic for you, might leave another shrivelling up their nose. Just smell pleasant, not overpowering. Work your fashion in office right and you’ll have colleagues giving you the tag of an ‘office style icon’. Now, if that is out of envy or love, totally depends on your chemistry.

ow often do you see your children glued to their mobile phones or computers instead of playing outdoors, running in the parks, gazing up at the moon and the stars, or admiring the bright blooms in the garden? Blame it on technology or the growing revolution of the Internet, our lives now remain totally dominated by screens and buttons and our children have replaced nature with consoles and video games. While it’s true that in today’s city life there is a lack of access to nature, it is equally important to introduce children to the natural world from their early age. With summer vacations round the corner it’s time for parents to provide these opportunities to their children and help them connect with nature. While visiting a park, garden, or a nature museum is one of the many ways to tune in with nature, here in Oman a visit to one of the mountaintops can also be a great firsthand experience. Keeping these ideas in mind Alila Jabal Akhdar has introduced an enriching experience for children that will help them root a unique relationship with nature. So if you want your children to explore traces of Oman’s history, unearth some age old fossils and run after beautiful birds and butterflies, take them to Alila Jabal Akhdar and join the butterfly trail. It has everything you need to make your hiking experience with children fun and adventurous. As you reach Alila Jabal Akhdar collect the butterfly trail marker from the lobby and go for a walk within the precincts of the resort. While you can go on a self guided tour along with your

The butterfly trail gives your children a chance to learn about twenty species of butterflies and as many as forty species of birds. Along with that one can also explore the intriguing world of different types of spiders, lizards, and creepy crawlies. The beehives known for the Jabal Akhdar honey is an added attraction. That’s not all. While you trek on the edgy paths your guide will tell you about the fruits and trees that grow locally. Don’t miss drinking water from the traditional Jahlah (water jug). Apart from these the children can also enjoy the swings and climbing frame, try jousting on the balance beam, or create their own symphony on the musical wall. is a down-to-earth person who takes pleasure in creating lip-smacking dishes that not only satiate, but also entertain the eaters. He has one goal in mind, that is to become the best chef the country has ever known. And with the taste of his signature burgers, it’s safe to say that he is on to something grand in the field of culinary arts and cooking. This talented chef has always been a true cookat-heart, as getting in the kitchen to prepare a dish was an unparalleled joy for him. “Feeding the family was my joy. When I was younger, I would always get excited when there would be a gathering at home and when I was asked to cook,” remembered Tariq. All he wanted was to serve some goodness on a platter. So he travelled to Malaysia to get a relevant diploma that would get him a step closer to his dream, and embark on a journey full of spices. After coming back to Muscat, Tariq began his cooking journey at fine restaurants with talented chefs and he gained valuable experience. That bettered his understanding of the industry and made him realise that his dream is, without a doubt, possible. Little did he know that he was destined to be his very own boss. The Big T concept (which is short for Big Tariq) was born at home, as he used to take large orders from his friends and family. Later on he decided to start taking orders from customers who would take a quick trip to heaven, as he is known for making delicious burgers. One day, Tariq sat and reflected on his journey and asked himself, “why shouldn’t I take it to the streets?” As you’d guess, it was the best decision he made. He started grilling outdoors in settings similar to that of mishkak places, serving you gourmet burgers on the go. His brand became widely known in town as the place to go for a quick bite. The whole concept worked exceptionally well as it was new and innovative. And as much as we love mishkak, a burger grilled on the streets is much cooler. With help from his high school mate and business partner Basil Al Kaiumi and his cousin Muncher Al Bahlani who is a professional hospitality consultant, Tariq was able to establish his business and take it to another level. Today, Tariq has his own take-away restaurant in North Al Hail, which has simple yet homely exterior seating area where you can indulge in his foodie creations that range from burgers, lamb chops, mishkak, prawns, and fries. With future plans to open up a bistro, there is nothing standing in his way to reach his dream as he is only an inch away from it all. I have tried his signature burgers, and it is to die for. Perhaps I’ll stop by next weekend for some grilled jumbo prawns. — salim@timesofoman.com
