Now that we’ve got our wardrobe basics in place, this week we plunge into evergreen accessories that won’t go out of style. Do you have them all?
STORY ANTARA BOSE
A pair of black or nude (or both) pumps It’s a sin to not own one of these. These timeless essentials will see you through so many different occasions — from workdays to late night parties, from weddings to red carpet events, and from coffee with the girls to formal dinners with the partner. The key is to get a pair that is comfortable. Pick sturdy heels that won’t make you feel like balancing is a challenge. When it comes to style, make sure they aren’t too pointy at the toes and aren’t adorned with too many embellishments. Ballet flats or luxe loafers Ballet flats have been evergreen but the recent trend is the luxe loafers. If you have caught on, by all means, flaunt those loafers. But if you are one of those who still think it’s too manly for a lady, just go and get some more ballet flats to prove they are still equally fashionable. And they are! Belts that really hold it together Buckles or no buckles, metal or chord, fat or skinny, a collection of belts that actually serve its purpose are essential. You could use it to keep your pants in place, to accentuate your silhouette or simply as a fun accessory to jazz up an otherwise monotone outfit. A fancy watch If you’re a watch aficionado, you’d be rejoicing right now because this is one accessory I’d say ‘splurge on’. Even if you are not into watches, it’s worth investing in at least one exquisite watch that you can really show off. A statement necklace Add life to your everyday dress with one of these. Just keep in mind to go subtle with your other accessories. This single piece is meant to say a lot and shouldn’t have to compete with any other distraction. A designer bag Alright, another one of those ‘spurge’ items! There is nothing wrong with having an assortment of bags shopped off the streets from around the world, but you must invest in a good quality handbag (and that doesn’t necessarily mean leather – go vegan) that you can carry to formal events. A lady is judged by the bag she carries, or so they say. Sigh, shallow world. Diamond studs It could jolly well be faux diamonds too, though we’d still say ‘nothing like the original’. But a pair of simple solitaire studs can complement any dress, and oh so elegantly that too. You can wear them big or small, as long as you can get them to catch the light and sparkle to that unmistakable brilliance.
Scarves If utilitarian is what you are looking for, never shy away from picking up a scarf that catches your eyes. Larger ones work as shawls, medium-sized ones are good as shrugs, and petite printed ones look great as headscarves (in case you are having a bad hair day). What’s more, the extra large ones, with a few knots here and there, can double as a bag too. A stylish pair of sunglasses Yes, we’ve heard about the tortoise shell inspired sunglasses and we agree they’re definitely trending. But we’re talking more about classics — Wayfarers or Aviators, maybe? Basically, not the styles that come in fad and die down three months later. Sunglasses are face-shape specific, so find one that really suits your face cut. Hoop earrings Chunky or sleek, oversized or small, beads or feathers – earrings come in all forms. So it can be a little overwhelming at times to pick the right match. In such situations, hoops are the way to go. They match with everything, come in various styles and even a variety of colours. A pair of gold or silver hoops can complement anything from your casual jeans and tee to a fancy evening dress. Cocktail rings Cocktail rings can be a real conversation starter and if you ask me, I’d say ‘the more the merrier’! But if you want to invest in one exclusive piece, take your time and find a piece whose design truly reflects your taste in style. A summer hat If you’re trying to portray ‘summer’ in a photo, just throw in a hat. They make the perfect picture – next to your flip-flops, with your beachwear or hanging with that vibrant tote bag. And oh, when you actually wear it, it helps protect against the harmful sunrays too. But coming back to fashion, straw hats are evergreen. And then there are the foldable cloth hats that come in so many more colours and are so much easier to pack. The choice is yours. — HiWeekend@timesofoman.com

or many things in life it is said that one should wait for the right time. Not quite sure what made the ‘right time’ arrive so late but somehow a visit to Foodlands remained deferred for years until it finally happened last week. Having passed by this restaurant owing to it being located at the heart of Al Khuwair, it was easy for us to locate the place and soon we were ushered to the quaint corner, the family section of the restaurant. Sipping the refreshing mocktail of orange and pineapple juice that was served upon our arrival we started with kebabs, it being the most favoured choice when it comes to starters. Served in both vegetarian and non vegetarian options the platter had plenty to choose from. We started with Crispy Palak Fry that is deep fried gram flour coated spinach leaves, Vegeta-
ble Amritsari; cheese stuffed mixed vegetable patties, Paneer Reshmi Kebab; cottage cheese slabs marinated in mustard and spices and grilled to perfection, and Aloo Tilwada or stuffed potatoes grilled with tandoori spices and coated with toasted mustard seeds. Kebab connoisseurs would agree that when it comes to kebabs, vegetarians always become a loner in the meaty environment but we were bowled over by the attention given to the vegetarian side too. The subtle flavours of the spices gave a great start to the non vegetarian starters that followed. They were Creamy Garlic Chicken, Grilled Chicken Kebab presented in satay style, and Mexican Pepper Prawn in which jumbo prawns were marinated in Thai chilli paste, parsley leaves, and pepper and then grilled. This was served with a tartar sauce dip. Thyme Grilled Chicken; boneless chicken pieces marinated in
rosemary, thyme, cream and pepper were chargrilled and served with a tomato, parsley, and chilli flakes dip. The kebab platter had Murgh Rozali, Dahi and Lucknowi Kebabs. Rozali Kebab were chicken pieces stuffed with mutton mince and then grilled. After a hearty kebab binge it was time to shift our attention to the main course. Since Foodlands is known to serve cuisines from both North and South India we started with Butter Chicken and Paneer Pasanda with naans. Both these creamy, tomato and cashew infused curries were velvety in texture and flavourful. Subz Bhuna Palak with mushrooms and corn was another vegetarian main dish which was very delicious. When it came to the south Indian delicacies it was a delight to be served some traditional dishes. It was also time to clear the misconception that south Indian food mainly revolved round idlis and dosas. The southern Indian platter had some beautifully presented authentic curries from Kerala. We started with Attirachi Tawayil Kuthi Porichathu. It might sound like a tongue twister for those who are alien to the language but it is mutton fried on the tava with sliced coconut and a dish meant for those who have a palate to savour spices. The mango pulp dip was a great accompaniment. We also had Beef Koottularthu; cooked with sliced onions, spices and roasted with dry coconut, Chemeen Kizhi; prawns which were sautéed with onions in a thick gravy, and Fish manga curry made with kingfish in coconut milk, raw mango, and spices along with steamed rice. These were served with the traditional Kerala parantha, appams, and Thalassery Chicken Dum Biryani. We devoured in delight as we sipped kiwi strawberry mojito which had chopped kiwi and strawberry bits in strawberry syrup topped with soda. Mango lady that had vanilla ice cream, with mango pulp with crushed mint and ice caught our fancy too. Green mango was a refreshing medley of lime, coriander, ginger, raw mango with a mild kick of green chillies. The mixed bag of rich and spicy food left us staggering and we decided to burp it off with fried ice cream and falooda. If you are looking for variety all under one roof that’s easy on the purse too you know where to go this weekend. —ashishdubash@timesofoman.com

FIGHTING IN STORY SHRUTHI NAIR
L
ast year, I had decided to pay a casual visit to The Champ, just to check out the different activities they have to offer to get my hopeless ďŹ tness regime back on track. There was, however, this one corner of the whole oor that I was drawn towards for it exuberated more sound and energy than the rest of the space. Kickboxing is a form of combat sport that originated way back in the 1960s and is considered to be an evolved version of Muay Thai. Muay Thai has a fascinating history as the roots can be dated back to the 14th century where it was practised by Siamese soldiers in its rawest form. Later in the 19th century it was adopted as a form of recreation or for self-defence. It was years later that Osamu Naguchi, a Japanese expert, came across Muay Thai and decided to merge it with full contact techniques of Karate and boxing to what has become Kickboxing. The sport got popularised in the US and then to the other parts of the world and gradually started gaining ground as a professional sport participated in and watched across the world. The Oman Kickboxing Club started in 2010 by Baqar

Oman Fighting Championship (OFC), the pre-eminent martial arts league in the Sultanate, has unveiled its third annual fight night, OFC3 Battlegrounds. Set to take place on December 16, 2017 at the Barr Al Jissah Amphitheatre, this highly anticipated event is expected to draw crowds of up to 1,200 people, making it the largest OFC event so far.
GOOD SPIRIT
Haider, who started training as a kickboxer in 1993 in Edinburgh. Having trained for almost two decades before that had changed Baqar’s life in many ways and he wanted to introduce it in Oman. OKC is currently the largest club in the Sultanate and since it opened there has been an overwhelming number of Omanis and expats who had the desire to learn the sport. Kickboxing is unique in varied ways. It involves punches, kicks, blocks, and evasive manoeuvres along with knee strikes. The Oman Kickboxing Club is a great place to get yourself enrolled in as it can comfortably accommodate people who are supremely inexperienced and unfit and even those who have ample experience and are skilled fighters. The first hour of the two-hour long class is the intense workout that could throw you off, especially if you are a beginner, but if you survive then you are totally ready for what’s in store for you next, which is technique and skill training. The experienced coaches, who’ve trained for a few years and have even participated in a few matches internationally, make sure that they give personal attention to all the attendees. In the past few years, OKC has managed to produce a number of skilled
fighters who have not just participated in but have also won many championships. On seeing the potential the country had in terms of talented fighters, Baqar and his partners Reza Mostofi and Fayyad Samarah, under The Agency Design and Promo Works decided that it was time to start an officially affiliated championship here in Oman in order to provide a platform for the budding fighters from the various clubs that opened up in different parts of the country ever since. There was a good supply of fighters, there was a demand for a platform to showcase talent, and that purely was what resulted in the formation of Oman Fighting Championship. “Further to the promotion of the sport itself, our aim is to also promote a healthier lifestyle for the residents of Oman, with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity which are all on the rise. This is our little way of combating that, not everyone who joins OKC wants to or has to get involved in the combat side of the sport. For now we have been focusing on developing the two fighters that we have for the upcoming championship on 16th December, training hard and hopefully being crowned as the Champions of Oman.”

NAME NIDHAL AOUALI AGE 29 NATIONALITY TUNISIAN Nidhal is currently a coach at OKC, who perhaps is the owner of the best body in the whole of Oman. He has lived in the country for the last 10 years and started kickboxing seven years back. He has participated in numerous fights across the Middle East and has remained undefeated. Nidhal calls opting for kickboxing a great decision that has changed and shaped his life in better ways. “I was a football player before that. I tried gym, different kinds of things and then we tried kickboxing. The self-discipline and self-confidence, healthy lifestyle and routine that kickboxing teaches you takes your life in the correct direction. You have to do a certain workout everyday
and eat properly. What we learn here is not something we can use outside in the streets. But you know your capacity and that confidence changes the way you look at things,” he said. He added, “Fighting is a one-on-one sport. The harder you work the closer you get to your goal. For me, fighting is not just physical. It is probably just 40% of the whole thing. It is the mental state, how you analyse and process things, and how you adopt into a situation where someone is trying to hurt you and you have to protect yourself and hurt him back. It’s like a physical form of playing chess.” Speaking of his preparation for OFC he said, “I personally need to work on power and speed. Because in kickboxing you may just get the chance to land one punch in the whole fight and it has to be powerful. We do focus on physical preparation. I cannot control the outcome of the fight but I can control what I do.”

NAME VINOD KUMAR AGE 29 NATIONALITY INDIAN This simple man hailing from Punjab came to Oman on finding a job as a mason like most blue collar workers in the country. But unlike the majority of them, what distinguished Vinod was his ambition. He has been fighting for the last eight years even before he came to the country. However, it was only after joining OKC that he started taking it up professionally. He is the holder of the light weight champions title but is working longer and harder for this year’s championship. “I’m training harder and better than the previous year. I’m focusing on my footwork, power, and speed. The event itself is bigger this year. Everybody feels the pain,” he said. He said, “Kickboxing has changed my life completely. Earlier I used to treat it like a sport, now I’ve made it my lifestyle.

Kickboxing is also helping me in my job. Earlier I used to feel that this would be a hindrance to my work, but my office is supporting me.” Vinod has his eyes set on the prize and is prepared to work as hard as he can to achieve his ultimate goals. “My goal is to keep the belt with me but my ultimate goal is to hold an international title. —shruthi@timesofoman.com
