GOLD Dawn of Coinage, Uncertain Ionia; 650-600 BC, Weidauer-9, but 1/24th Stater, 0.66 gms. Obv: Striated, Rx: Rough incuse. Extremely sharp and distinct. Mint State....................................................................................................................... 2500 Possible New Type Dawn of Coinage, Uncertain Ionia; 650-600 BC, EL Hekte, 2.36g. Weidauer-, Linzalone-. Obv: Carefully engraved vertical striations, bisected by single horizontal line. Rx: Irregular punchmarks. Of 24 examples illustrated in Linzalone’s “Electrum and the Invention of Coinage,” none have the bisecting lateral line seen on the present example. Linzalone-33 has carefully drawn striations, but no lateral line. There are some somewhat similar, worn and clumsy examples, but nothing exhibiting the clarity of this coin. See Gorny & Mosch 199, 10 October 2011, lot 412 for the same type on a different denomination (1/24th stater). There is nothing similar in Weidauer. This coin is quite remarkable for its sharpness and somewhat original design motif and the care with which the striations are created. Choice EF................................... 13500 Unique Ionia, Uncertain Mint; c. 6th century BC, EL Hekte, 2.38g. Cf. SNG von Aulock 1786, and Lanz 147 (2009), lot 91. Apparently unpublished. The star-shaped reverse punch is attested with the bull on obverse, but hitherto only with the bull facing left. Obv: Head of bull right. Rx: Star-like pattern within incuse. Ex Gemini X, 13 January 2013, lot 103. Ex Jonathan Rosen Collection. A new type among the numerous Milesian-weight electrum issues that cannot yet be attributed to mints. The abundance of types has made scholars wonder whether private persons or associations (bankers, temples, dynasts) were the issuers rather than civic mints. However, one has to keep in mind that among early Greek coinages many had constantly changing types (Cyzicus, Phocaea and Mytilene continued this in later times), and so the complexity of early Greek electrum coinage does not imply a multitude of little mints. The image of this coin, the bull, is a powerful symbol that was used by the Lydian king Croesus, the Samians, and the Poseidonians in the West. EF.................................................. 4000 Unique Ionia, Uncertain Mint; c. 560-500 BC, EL Hekte, 2.36g. The type with a ram facing left is well known, cf. Weidauer 49-51. Apparently an unparalleled variant of Weidauer 48. Obv: Forepart of ram right. Rx: Irregular incuse square. Ex Gemini X, 13 January 2013, lot 95. Ex Jonathan Rosen Collection. Beautifully drawn forepart of ram. It is unusual to find a new issue of uncertain electrum which is so distinctive. EF.5000 Lion-Headed Winged Man Mysia, Cyzicus; 500-460 BC, EL Hekte, 2.66g. Boston-1459. Obv: Nude, winged, male monster with human body, lion’s head and tail, running left in kneeling running pose, head right; jaws open, tongue protruding; rounded wings outspread; bent, extended right arm holding tunny downwards; left arm flexed and held at waist with closed fist While the market is filled with hektes, almost none are as interesting and unusual as this coin, with such a beautifully resolved and unusual mythological beast. Obv: DhIhSChSREXRESNANTIuM Facing bust of Christ with short curly hair and cross behind his head. He raises his right hand in benediction and holds the book of Gospels in his left, Rx: DNIuSTINIANuS MuLTUSAN Facing bust of Justinian II with short beard and crown with cross atop. He holds a cross potent on three steps in right hand and a globus cruciger, inscribed PAX, in left hand. This coin is the second portrait of Christ ever minted. It is interesting that the PAX written on the globus cruciger that Justinian II holds was the opposite of the murderous purge that Justinian conducted
until his execution in 711 AD. Unusually well-struck for this issue. Mint State.. 5000 Justinian II; 2nd Reign 705-711 AD. Constantinople, Solidus, 4.32g. Berk-200. Obv: DhIhSChSREXRESNANTIuM Facing bust of Christ with short curly hair and cross behind his head. He holds a cross potent on three steps in right hand and a globus cruciger, inscribed PAX, in left hand. PAX sharply struck on globe. Some flatness from 6h-8h on obverse edge and slight flatness on the corresponding side of the reverse. Not at all interfering with the flawless portrait of Christ. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena right, Rx: Owl standing right, head facing. This tetradrachm was apparently one of the first issues produced after the Athenian League treasury was relocated from the island Delos to Athens in 454 BC. Having assumed control over the revenues of the league, the Athenians stepped up the output of their mint. As a result, Athenian coins from the second half of the fifth century typically look less attractive than their predecessors; their types and fabric often show features of standardized mass production. Nevertheless there are highlights, among them our coin. Produced at a time when Phidias and his co-workers were busy erecting the Parthenon and carving its sculptures, the style of Athena’s head on the obverse harks back to archaic models. The long face and deep smile stand out from the compact features usual at the time. The owl on the reverse also preserves some details of an earlier type, in particular the large head with relatively small eyes. The engraver or engravers responsible might have been older workmen, who preserved a fondness for the beauty of the Severe Style coins, thus producing an eclectic rarity that is most desirable. Obverse struck in high relief. aEF / Good VF....................................... 3600 101. Attic, Athens; 440 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.18g. Rx: Two incuse squares of unequal size. This series from Lydia minted under Croesus represents a time of change in coinage with the very first bimetallic pieces. One of the earliest coins in existence after the electrum from Western Asia Minor. These coins are the first bi-metallic coinage, introduced under the great King Croesus. The imagery of lion facing stag occurs throughout the gold and silver coinage and across several denominations. This 1/12 stater is tiny at about 4 mm diameter but not the smallest. There exists a 1/96 silver stater as well. This coinage is both historical and artistic. Fine.............................. 875 Lycia, Uncertain Dynasty; c. 500-440 BC, Diobol, 1.45g. A coin of this rarity combined with this quality is rarely ever encountered. It is exceptional in every way with no detail lacking on the complex arch. The same error has been shown in the Forvm Ancient Coins Discussion group on four other Alexandrian reverse dies of this issue: two of Theodosius I, like our coin, but from different obverse and reverse dies; one of Gratian, with the same reverse type, but again from a different reverse die; and one of Arcadius, with a variant GLORIA ROMANORVM reverse type of the same issue, here also misspelled GLORAI. Bird standing on branch above, below another bird grooms self near water, jar above. Letters on left, Aleph, chet (or zion), heh for “Ache” or “Azhe”. 18mm. ........... 4000 Near Eastern Samarian Black Stone Seal, ca. 4th Century BC. Depicts male, kneeling to left and holding a gazelle as a trophy or, perhaps, a sacrifice. Two Aramaic letters to left, gimel, above, and bet below. These letters possibly refer to “Bagabat” a name that appears on Samarian coinage. The person on this seal very much resembles the person appearing on Samarian Coinage #46, which carries the name “Jerobaum”. 11mm. ....................................................... 4500 Egyptian Egyptian Faience Ushabti, Third Intermediate, ca. 1567-1085 BC. This small ushabti has remains of it’s original blue-green glaze on the back of the figure, the front surface has lost most of its original glaze but retains some of the original applied black details. At some point a small piece of acrylic was applied to the bottom of the ushabti’s feet, presumably to make the piece even and allow it to stand upright without a support. L. 3 1/8” (8 cm).. L. 3 1/8” (8 cm). ............................. 450 Egyptian Large Red Faience Pectoral Scarab, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. Of very dense, glassy faience, this scarab has eight drill holes to permit sewing onto the bandages of a mummy, probably along with two wings of the same material. Each element of the beetle has been outlined in gold paint (perhaps modernly in an attempt to enhance its apparent value). The scarab beetle was a common symbol of regeneration for the Egyptians, and its use as a funerary amulet on the mummy was meant to guarantee the resurrection of the deceased in the Afterlife. L. 2 3/8” (6 cm). ................................................................................... 1250 Egyptian Blue Faience Model Offering Tray, Late Period, ca. 715-30 BC. This light blue offering tray has a rectangular form which is surmounted by ten small libation vessels. An unusual and large piece of faience with wonderful color. Rejoined in two places. L. 5” H. 1 1/2” (12.7 x 3.8 cm). .......................... 1650 Egyptian Large Alabastron, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. This large alabastron is elegantly modeled from a beautiful piece of banded alabaster. It has a long oval body with two lug handles and a narrow cylindrical lip. Restored from large fragments. H. 10 1/4” (26 cm). ................................................................... 2500 Egyptian Terracotta Canopic Jar Lid of Imsety, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. There were four jars used in the funerary rituals to preserve the viscera of the deceased after embalming. Each of these jars was dedicated to a specific deity, a son of Horus, and contained the embalmed remains of specific organs. In this case we have Imsety who was the human-headed son of Horus and protector of the liver. Ex Midwest Collection formed before 1967. H. 3 1/2” W. 4 1/4” (9 x 11 cm). .................................................................................................. 3500 Egyptian Bronze Uraeus Amulet, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. The cobra was the sacred image of Wadjyt, a patron deity in the Delta, who came to represent Lower Egypt. The cobra (Lower Egypt) and vulture (Upper Egypt) were included among the king’s titles and insignias and were included in various crowns and royal regalia. This amulet is recessed for glass or stone inlay. Ex Midwest Collection formed before 1967. L. 1 1/2” (4 cm). ............................................... 1250 Egyptian Faience Ushabti, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. Dark blue faience ushabti with glyphs on either side. The inscription reads: “Illuminate Osiris Mes, born of Heker, true of voice.” Ex Midwest Collection formed before 1967. H. 2 1/8”. With wood stand 3 1/4”. ............................................................................ 750 Egyptian Bronze Seated Harpocrates, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. Shown seated, with shaved head and sidelock, Horus has his feet on the ground, his arms at his sides, and is nude except for a uraeus serpent atop his head. Horus-thechild is often shown seated on the lap of his mother Isis, nursing at her breast, but the square base on which his feet rest suggests that this piece was independent of a larger statue ensemble. Ex Midwest Collection formed before 1967. Mounted. H. 4” (10 cm). ................................................................................................................ 1500 Egyptian Faience Head of Harpocrates, Late Period, ca. 715-330 BC. Harpocrates, the young Horus, is portrayed with the typical “sidelock of youth”. Horus was the god of sky and divine kingship. The ears were drilled as the piece was most likely adorned with gold earrings, lost in antiquity. Wonderful detail throughout and very well balanced. Mounted on white marble base. H. 1 3/4”. Ceramics 534. Etruscan Bucchero Kantharos, ca. 6th Century BC. The classically shaped kantharos in matte black pottery. This bucchero ware drinking cup has high elongated strap handles and sits on a shallow flared foot. Notched ridge encircling lower body. Crack in side and loss to foot, some areas of slight encrustation. H. 4 5/8” (11.7 cm). ....................................................................................................... 800 535. Greek Attic Black Glazed Skyphos, ca. 500 BC. A beautiful, wellpreserved example of a Greek drinking cup. Elegant shape with rounded body and slightly flaring lip, small delicately formed handles on either side. A single reserved red band at bottom. H. 4 1/2” (11.4 cm) W. 6 3/4”. ............................................. 1250 536. Magna Graecia Xenon Stemless Cup, Red Swan Group, ca. mid 4th Century BC. Entire cup, inside and out, covered in black glaze with added red decoration. A band of laurel leaves around the exterior; a similar wreath decorates the interior, following a relief line about halfway between the center of the cup and the lip. In the center is a swan in profile, standing left. The group of cups to which this belongs takes its name from this system of decoration (see Beazley, EVP, pp. 223-24). The piece has been restored from fragments. See “The Art of South Italy, Vases from Magna Graecia,” Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, p. 305. H. 2 1/4” W. 9 3/4” (8 cm x 25 cm). ............................................................................................ 1950 537. Etruscan Star Plate, ca. 4th Century BC. Tan slip with black paint with no restoration. H. 2 3/4”. W. 7” to handles (7 x 17.8 cm). ............................................................ 750 Bronze 539. Hellenistic Bronze Figure of Harpocrates, ca. 2nd Century BC. This is a wonderful example of the Hellenization of the Egyptian gods after the conquest of Alexander. Harpocrates, son of Osiris and Isis, is clearly modeled in Classical form to every degree except the crown ornament and the gesture of touching the finger to the lips- an identifying characteristic of Harpocrates. The piece is beautifully modeled and balanced, its torso tilting gently to the left and a cape tied at the shoulder closely following the contours of his body. The face is very cleanly modeled with hair tied in the back. Provenance: purchased in Paris in the early 1950’s. H. 3 3/8” (8.6 cm). .................................................................................. 3500 540. Roman Gilt Bronze Ionic Column, ca. 1st Century AD. This finely cast temple column is very realistically modeled, including the parallel grooves in the column body and the ionic scrolls on the capital. The piece has nearly all of its original gilding, which is very rare in Roman bronze work. Ex 154th Buy or Bid Sale. L. 3 3/4” (9.5 cm). ........................................................................................ 950 Misc. 541. Greek Marble Head of a Young Girl, ca. 150-80 BC. Hair combed upwards and knotted at the top of the head. The coiffure is reminiscent of the head types of the Three Graces, cf. B. Sismondo Ridgeway, Hellenistic Sculpture, III. The Styles of ca. 100-31 BC (Madison 2002), pl. 37. However, the coiffure is known for young (i.e. still unmarried) girls since the late 4th century BC and was in use throughout the Hellenistic age. The workmanship of this head with its sharp contrast between the sfumato of the face and the rough, artistically unfinished mass of the hair points to a late Hellenistic date. Mounted height 4 1/2” (11.4 cm). ............. 4250 542. Roman Intaglio Zodiac, ca. 1st Century AD. Twelve signs of the zodiac surround a central image. Small chip at bottom. L. 1/2” (1 cm). ........................ 1500 543. Viking Pair of Bronze Viking Zoomorphic Pins, ca. 9th-10th Century AD. These pins are modeled in thick smooth bronze with incised detailing on the surfaces. The body of each piece is pierced. Only one of the pieces retains its original suspended adornment of thin triangular sheets of bronze. Beautiful rich olive green and brown patination. Mounted. L. 3” (7.6 cm). ............................. 1250 544. Pre-Columbian Colima Terracotta Female Figure, ca. 200 BC- 200 AD. From the west Mexico Colima culture. A standing female figure, buff ceramic. She holds her hands against her chest and wears a headband, earspools and a coil necklace or collar. Head re-attached at neck. Some deposits on the surface. Mounted. H. 5 3/4” (14.6 cm). .............................................................................. 450 545. Pre-Columbian Sinu Gold Nose Ornament, Cordoba Region, ca. 500-1000 AD. Cast in crescentric form with fine filigree. Modern center suspention loop added. Mounted. W. 3 1/4” (8 cm). ............................................................ 1450 546. Prehistoric European Stone Axe Head, Neolithic Period, ca. 3500 BC. A midsize tapering axe head with curved blade and slightly pointed butt. Grey rock with flecking. Ex American collection purchased from England between 19832002. L. 5 1/4” (13 cm). ........................................................................................ 475 547. Thailand Thai Ayutthaya Sandstone Life-size Buddha Head, ca. 16th Century AD. This beautiful life-size Ayutthaya head depicts the classic Thai Buddha sculpted in tan sandstone with a strong Sukothai influence. The piece has a long arching nose and relatively round eyes underneath half circle eyebrows and a very subtle smile. The piece is very elegantly modeled and certainly rendered in high style. The hair detailing is done in older Ayutthaya dot design, the convention adopted from the Khmer and long used in Ayutthaya representation. While the piece has suffered some erosion it is still of very beautiful style and a very elegant piece. Nose tip restored. H. 9 1/2”. ................................................................................ 5750 548. Persian Qajar Glazed Vessel, ca. 19th Century AD. This beautiful glazed vessel has multiple registers in blue, green, yellow and red. The central register has a chain design and is flanked by two larger multi-color registers with green and yellow shapes set in a field of blue and black dots. Lovely piece, light scattered chipping. H. 8 1/2” (21.6 cm). ................................................................ 700 549. Persian Qajar Blue and White Glazed Bowl, ca. 1900 AD. This is a wonderful example of later Persian pottery. The design is done with light and dark blue on a white background. The bowl has a central medallion with floral patterns surrounded by a larger register with a star shaped pattern interwoven with dot and leaf patterns. Narrow flattened rim. Dia. 13 1/2”. ................................................. 500
