Weidauer-, Linzalone-. Obv: Carefully engraved vertical striations, bisected by single horizontal line. Rx: Irregular punchmarks. Of 24 examples illustrated in Linzalone’s “Electrum and the Invention of Coinage,” none have the bisecting lateral line seen on the present example. Linzalone-33 has carefully drawn striations, but no lateral line.

There are some somewhat similar, worn and clumsy examples, but nothing exhibiting the clarity of this coin. See Gorny & Mosch 199, 10 October 2011, lot 412 for the same type on a different denomination (1/24th stater). There is nothing similar in Weidauer.

This coin is quite remarkable for its sharpness and somewhat original design motif and the care with which the striations are created. Choice EF................................... 13500 Unique Ionia, Uncertain Mint; c. 6th century BC, EL Hekte, 2.38g. Cf. SNG von Aulock 1786, and Lanz 147 (2009), lot 91. Apparently unpublished. The star-shaped reverse punch is attested with the bull on obverse, but hitherto only with the bull facing left. Obv: Head of bull right. Rx: Star-like pattern within incuse. Ex Gemini X, 13 January 2013, lot 103. Ex Jonathan Rosen Collection. A new type among the numerous Milesian-weight electrum issues that cannot yet be attributed to mints. The abundance of types has made scholars wonder whether private persons or associations (bankers, temples, dynasts) were the issuers rather than civic mints. However, one has to keep in mind that among early Greek coinages many had constantly changing types (Cyzicus, Phocaea and Mytilene continued this in later times), and so the complexity of early Greek electrum coinage does not imply a multitude of little mints. The image of this coin, the bull, is a powerful symbol that was used by the Lydian king Croesus, the Samians, and the Poseidonians in the West. It is unusual to find a new issue of uncertain electrum which is so distinctive. EF.5000 Lion-Headed Winged Man Mysia, Cyzicus; 500-460 BC, EL Hekte, 2.66g. Boston-1459. Obv: Nude, winged, male monster with human body, lion’s head and tail, running left in kneeling running pose, head right; jaws open, tongue protruding; rounded wings outspread; bent, extended right arm holding tunny downwards; left arm flexed and held at waist with closed fist While the market is filled with hektes, almost none are as interesting and unusual as this coin, with such a beautifully resolved and unusual mythological beast.

It is interesting that the PAX written on the globus cruciger that Justinian II holds was the opposite of the murderous purge that Justinian conducted

This tetradrachm was apparently one of the first issues produced after the Athenian League treasury was relocated from the island Delos to Athens in 454 BC. Having assumed control over the revenues of the league, the Athenians stepped up the output of their mint. As a result, Athenian coins from the second half of the fifth century typically look less attractive than their predecessors; their types and fabric often show features of standardized mass production. Nevertheless there are highlights, among them our coin. Produced at a time when Phidias and his co-workers were busy erecting the Parthenon and carving its sculptures, the style of Athena’s head on the obverse harks back to archaic models. The long face and deep smile stand out from the compact features usual at the time. The owl on the reverse also preserves some details of an earlier type, in particular the large head with relatively small eyes. The engraver or engravers responsible might have been older workmen, who preserved a fondness for the beauty of the Severe Style coins, thus producing an eclectic rarity that is most desirable. This is among the smaller denominations as a 1/6 stater. The coin is indeed small at only 11 mm, however is visually interesting with the opposing bull/lion image. A fascinating piece of history. One of the earliest coins in existence after the electrum from Western Asia Minor. These coins are the first bi-metallic coinage, introduced under the great King Croesus. The imagery of lion facing stag occurs throughout the gold and silver coinage and across several denominations. This 1/12 stater is tiny at about 4 mm diameter but not the smallest. Some ghosting in front of Heracles as a result of multiple striking. Since these pieces are generally in a poor state of condition and are poorly struck and badly centered we regard this coin as one of the finest known.

The present coin of Julia Soaemias is a correctly identified in the BM catalogue as a hybrid with a reverse of Julia Domna, although the authors of RIC accept it without comment as an official type of Soaemias. This small ushabti has remains of it’s original blue-green glaze on the back of the figure, the front surface has lost most of its original glaze but retains some of the original applied black details. At some point a small piece of acrylic was applied to the bottom of the ushabti’s feet, presumably to make the piece even and allow it to stand upright without a support. L. 3 1/8” (8 cm).. Of very dense, glassy faience, this scarab has eight drill holes to permit sewing onto the bandages of a mummy, probably along with two wings of the same material. Each element of the beetle has been outlined in gold paint (perhaps modernly in an attempt to enhance its apparent value). The scarab beetle was a common symbol of regeneration for the Egyptians, and its use as a funerary amulet on the mummy was meant to guarantee the resurrection of the deceased in the Afterlife. There were four jars used in the funerary rituals to preserve the viscera of the deceased after embalming. Each of these jars was dedicated to a specific deity, a son of Horus, and contained the embalmed remains of specific organs. In this case we have Imsety who was the human-headed son of Horus and protector of the liver. Ex Midwest Collection formed before 1967. Horus-thechild is often shown seated on the lap of his mother Isis, nursing at her breast, but the square base on which his feet rest suggests that this piece was independent of a larger statue ensemble. Entire cup, inside and out, covered in black glaze with added red decoration. A band of laurel leaves around the exterior; a similar wreath decorates the interior, following a relief line about halfway between the center of the cup and the lip. In the center is a swan in profile, standing left. The group of cups to which this belongs takes its name from this system of decoration (see Beazley, EVP, pp.

This is a wonderful example of the Hellenization of the Egyptian gods after the conquest of Alexander. Harpocrates, son of Osiris and Isis, is clearly modeled in Classical form to every degree except the crown ornament and the gesture of touching the finger to the lips- an identifying characteristic of Harpocrates. The piece is beautifully modeled and balanced, its torso tilting gently to the left and a cape tied at the shoulder closely following the contours of his body. The face is very cleanly modeled with hair tied in the back. Provenance: purchased in Paris in the early 1950’s. This finely cast temple column is very realistically modeled, including the parallel grooves in the column body and the ionic scrolls on the capital. 541. Greek Marble Head of a Young Girl, ca. 150-80 BC. Hair combed upwards and knotted at the top of the head. The coiffure is reminiscent of the head types of the Three Graces, cf. B. Sismondo Ridgeway, Hellenistic Sculpture, III. The Styles of ca. 100-31 BC (Madison 2002), pl. 37. However, the coiffure is known for young (i.e. still unmarried) girls since the late 4th century BC and was in use throughout the Hellenistic age. The workmanship of this head with its sharp contrast between the sfumato of the face and the rough, artistically unfinished mass of the hair points to a late Hellenistic date. Thailand Thai Ayutthaya Sandstone Life-size Buddha Head, ca. 16th Century AD. This beautiful life-size Ayutthaya head depicts the classic Thai Buddha sculpted in tan sandstone with a strong Sukothai influence. The piece has a long arching nose and relatively round eyes underneath half circle eyebrows and a very subtle smile. The piece is very elegantly modeled and certainly rendered in high style. The hair detailing is done in older Ayutthaya dot design, the convention adopted from the Khmer and long used in Ayutthaya representation. While the piece has suffered some erosion it is still of very beautiful style and a very elegant piece.
