The IGWT Shield Nickels Collection with Patterns & Varieties U.S. Numismatic Expert Mike Printz Imaging and cataloging - Mike Printz Layout - Aaron Berk
The IGWT Shield Nickel Collection with Patterns and Varieties IGWT (In God We Trust) as he was known by in the collecting community, Lou was not just a great friend but one of the finest people I ever had the pleasure to call my friend. He loved his wife, his daughters, his career, life and he loved his Shield Nickels. I first met Lou around 1997 or so and the collection offered here represents Lou’s passion from 1998 until his untimely and far too soon passing in June of 2010. I’ve chosen to break the collection up into two major sections. Section one is the Primary Date Set along with 10 patterns and 6 errors. Section two represents the various varieties Lou collected and his absolute passion and desire to understand as much about this interesting series as possible. I am fortunate to have access to some of Lou’s notes and commentary. I’ve done my best to share some of those throughout this offering. One thing I did want to share was Lou’s collecting philosophy: “Collecting means assembling a set of coins in which each enhances the significance of the others. Having limited resources helps define a purpose that brings coherence to a collection. Finding that purpose means assembling a collection in your mind before purchase. Serving that purpose makes it hard to find coins on which to spend money and ensures years of enjoyment in learning, searching and purchasing.”
Lou B.
The Primary Date Set
1866 Rays 5c MS66 PCGS/CAC US70157 - First year of issue for the Shield Nickel design. The With Rays reverse was employed for 1866 and part of 1867 only. This Gem is wholly original with hints of powder blue and pale gold, is well executed, offers wonderful luster and excellent eye appeal. CAC Verified From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $3250
1867 Rays 5c MS65 PCGS US70158 - Much scarcer than the 1866, this coin is exceptionally nice for the grade with terrific eye appeal. The 1867 Rays is a subtype that accounts for about 7% of the nickels struck that year with the other 93% being the 1867 No Rays subtype. The Rays were removed due to striking difficulties and to improve the life of the dies. Beautiful, original gold, orange and nickel blue with booming luster and mint bloom frost and exceptionally well struck with all reverse rays details sharp and all star radials full to center. Superb! From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $2550
1867 No Rays 5c MS65 PCGS/CAC US70159 - F-66, missing leaf. The second bundle of leaves on the right side shows the 4th leaf missing. In the years 1866 through 1869, the master hub for the shield nickel obverse was missing a leaf on the right side of the second right leaf cluster. These leaves were engraved by hand instead and occasionally a die was made where they forgot to engrave the extra leaf. Original nickel “white” with a hint of pale blue to the frost. Excellent luster and eye appeal. Still in the first generation “rattler” holder. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $900
1867 No Rays 5c PR66 Cameo NGC US70160 - Prototype Reverse or also referred to as Pattern Rev. Original white with deeply reflective fields under nicely frosted devices allowing for true Cameo contrast. This piece is important as it was struck with a prototype reverse, easily identified by the fact the star above the T in CENTS points between the T and S whereas the star points to the T on the regular reverse. NGC has graded just 1 at this level with none higher. I have the benefit of some of Lou’s notes, which were exhaustive in many ways, so here’s what Lou had to say: “This 1867 proof was struck with the prototype reverse die used on transitional pattern J-507 (also used on J-573). Bob Julian’s research shows that the mint produced 25 five-cent proofs delivered in early February 1867, and it has long been thought that the notation referred to coins struck with the with-rays reverse (which accounts for the astronomical prices of the ‘67 w/ rays proofs). It’s pretty clear now that the Mint record refers to no-rays proofs struck with the prototype reverse.” No spots, prints or issues and a really lovely coin! From the IGWT Shield nickel Variety Collection. $6950

1868 5c MS66 NGC US70161 - FS-002.94. Uber frosty original white, crisp striking detail and lovely eye appeal. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $1250
1868 Rev. 68 5c MS65 PCGS/CAC US70162 - 1868 Rev. of 68, FS-002.96. Original and exceptionally nice! Booming luster, crisp, full striking detail both obverse and reverse with some really neat die breaks on obverse. The C and S in CENTS are broken along with the first S in STATES. Still in the old green tag holder. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield nickel Variety Collection. $1550
1868 Rev. 68 5c MS65 PCGS/CAC US70163 - 1868 Rev of 68, FS-002.95. Another exceptionally nice coin for the grade. Dramatic die breaks along with the broken C and S in CENTS, full striking detail throughout and offering really nice and frosty, light patina both obverse and reverse. Still in the old, first generation blue tag holder. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield nickel Variety Collection. $1550

1869 5c MS66 NGC US70164 - Narrow Date, FS-005, Breen-2481. This is sometimes referred to as the “Tall Date”. Essentially white with just a hint of pale gold color, nicely struck and offering frosty luster. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $1350
1870 5c MS65 PCGS/CAC US70165 - Fresh and exceptionally nice with wonderful striking detail, excellent luster and frost, delicate patina and great eye appeal. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $1325
1871 5c MS66 PCGS/CAC US70166 - Repunched Date, FS-006.5. Old school nice - you just don’t find Shield nickels like this anymore. Thick, mint bloom frost with superb striking detail, surfaces and lovely pastel blue and pale gold color. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $3950

1875 5c MS66 PCGS US70172 - One of the nicest Mint State Shield Nickels I’ve ever had the pleasure to own! Unbelievably nice surfaces and wholesome mint bloom frost. Beautiful nickel blue and pale gold patina with a hammered strike. While I don’t have records from this far back, I believe I sold this to Lou in 2007 or 2008. PCGS has graded just 14 at this level with 2 as 66+ and 1 in MS67. I urge you to check out the last MS66+ that sold for $4700 as the coin offered here blows it away from a strike standpoint as well as eye appeal. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $2950

1876 5c MS65 PCGS US70173 - Gorgeous golden-orange and vibrant nickel blue patina, superb frost and exceptional striking detail. A fabulous Gem! From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $1050
1876 5c MS66 PCGS/CAC US70174 - Triple Die Obverse, FS-101. Triple Die obverse and naked eye visible at the anulate under the cross. Superb striking detail, wholly original with wonderful frost and great eye appeal. This is the only coin graded as TDO, FS-101 MS66 by PCGS. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $4750
1878 5c PR66 PCGS US70175 - One of the prettiest Proof Shield Nickels I’ve ever seen - just stunning! I sold this to Lou around 2002 or 2003 and it is most certainly a coin you remember the instant you see it. Proof only issue. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $2100

1879 5c MS66 PCGS/CAC US70176 - The 1879 is a better date coming from a low mintage of just 25,900 coins. The only lower mintage issue is the 1880 with 16,000 made. Nice and super original with heavy mint frost, natural pale gold patina, crisp and full striking detail and a great look. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $4450
1880 5c PR67 PCGS/CAC US70177 - Great coin!! Absolutely original with superb striking detail, surfaces, thick mint frost and fantastic eye appeal. The 1880 is often purchased in Proof due to the excessive rarity, and cost, in Mint State. Still in the first generation Rattler Holder. Old school nice! CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $1950
1881 5c MS65 PCGS/CAC US70178 - A limited mintage of just 68,000 pieces. Original nickel white with wonderful frost, surfaces and striking detail. PR64 Red Brown
NGC
US70182 - Judd-417, Pollock-489, R.7. This is believed by some to be a true prototype of the Shield nickel design. Some of the copper pieces (including this one) have the same prominent center dot as seen on all nickel 1866 proofs. Deep burgundy and original brick red along with underlying traces of blue and golden-red. Very pretty and much more colorful in hand than the images can convey. This is the only Proof 64 Red Brown graded by either service with just 1 graded finer as Proof 66. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $5950
1866 5c PR64 Cameo PCGS/CAC US70183 - Judd-473, Pollock-564, Low R.6. George Washington appeared on numerous privately minted Early American tokens, but did not appear on U.S. Mint coins prior to the 1866 five cent patterns. The obverse depicts a bust of Washington facing right and has the legend IN GOD WE TRUST. The obverse is muled with the proof Shield nickel rays reverse with the centering dot plainly evident. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Both obverse and reverse offer deeply mirrored fields with nicely frosted devices allowing for a true cameo appearance. Frosty white with just a hint of light gold patina - great eye appeal! PCGS has graded just 2 at this level with 4 graded higher. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $3600

1866 5c PR65 NGC/CAC US70184 - Judd-481, Pollock-571, Low R.7. Five cent pattern with the head of Washington facing right. The reverse has a fancy numeral 5 in the center that is surrounded by a laurel wreath and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the margin. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Judd-481 is the only collectible variety of the GOD AND OUR COUNTRY Washington type. Judd-480 through Judd-485 and the doubleheaded Judd-521 through Judd-524 share the same obverse die, but all are prohibitively rare aside from Judd-481, which is merely very rare. Very pleasing pale gold patina covers both obverse and reverse. NGC has graded just 3 while PCGS has graded just 2. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $6350
1866 5c PR66 Cameo NGC/CAC US70185 - Judd-489, Pollock-577, Low R.6. The obverse has a shield design similar to that adopted for the regular issue Shield nickel, except that the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is expressed in smaller letters and the date is divided by the ball at the base of the shield. On the reverse, the numeral 5 is surrounded by a laurel wreath, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the rim. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Deeply mirrored fields under fully frosted devices allow for true cameo contrast. PCGS has graded just 2 and NGC has graded 4 with nothing graded finer. Great eye appeal! CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $5650
1866 5c PR67 NGC/CAC US70186 - Judd-507, Pollock-591, R.5. This pattern is essentially the regular coinage design, only without rays on the reverse. This design would not be introduced to production coinage until the following year. As such, this is an extremely important transitional issue in the production composition that is often, and should always be, collected alongside the regular issues. A truly beautiful super Gem with colors of vibrant gold, peach, pale lime green and hints of lavendar as well. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $6750

US70187 - Judd-509, Pollock-592. Rarity-6+. Bronze. Plain Edge. Obv: The Shield design used to coin regular-issue nickel five-cent pieces. Rev: The regular-issue type without rays and with stars pointing between the letters E and N and between T and S in CENTS, as adopted in 1867. PCGS has graded just 2 at this level with none graded finer including all color designations and there are no more than 20 examples thought to exist. Deeply reflective fields with intense and truly beautiful colors of magenta, brick red and red-brown on obverse and a reverse much the same but with vibrant golden-red about the devices. A coin that displays far, far more color than the images can convey. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $5650
1866 5c PR64 Cameo PCGS/CAC US70188 - Judd-561, Pollock-622, R.5. The central obverse device is a head of Liberty facing left, wearing a headdress of four large feathers and a ribbon with the inscription UNION AND LIBERTY. Resting on the hair in front of the ribbon are four large stars. The chief engraver’s name LONGACRE F. is stylishly displayed at the truncation of the neck. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, with the date in the exergue. The reverse features a Roman numeral V over an ornate shield, with IN GOD WE TRUST at the top. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. Wonderful eye appeal with deep, watery fields under heavily frosted devices. PCGS has graded just 3 at this level with 2 finer as Proof 65 CAM. CAC Verified. US70189 - J-A1867-9, Pollack-3308, Unique. Copper. Longacre prepared at least two hub trials (each is unique) for the design (J-A18679 and the following coin listed just after this coin, J-A1867-15). The following is directly from Lou’s notes and provides some great history re: this piece: “The hub trial takes us one step closer to Longacre than the J-561 takes us. It’s hard to tell from the photo, but the design elements are incuse as well as reversed (like you would expect to see on a die). This piece is a “snapshot” of one stage in Longacre’s creative process for the 561. You’ll see on the hub trial, for example, that the word UNION is not yet punched into the headdress, a significant addition reminding us that the Civil War had just ended. You’ll also note that Longacre modified the design slightly by repunching the stars before striking the 561, and you can see scribe lines (circular, horizontal, and vertical) used to position the letters.” Also note the C and A in AMERICA are closely spaced. Judd plate (7th and 9th editions), Pollock plate, Taxay plate. Needless to say, J-A1867-9 is to J-561 what J-A1867-15 (the following listed coin) is to J-566. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield nickel Variety Collection. $9750
1867 5c MS64 NGC/CAC US70190 - J-A1867-15, Pollack-3329. Unique. Copper. Obverse and reverse hubs trial. Longacre prepared at least two hub trials (each is unique) for the design (J-A1867-15 and the preceeding coin coin listed just prior to this coin, J-A1867-9). The obverse has a design similar to J-566, but in mirror image, since the design was impressed by a hub rather than a die. The design was incomplete, at this stage, missing the word LIBERTY, the coronet ornamentation, and dentils, but complete in most other respects. Circular scribe lines can be seen which guided the die sinker when he punched in the letters of the legend and the numerals of the date. The reverse is very incomplete with only 5 CENTS in mirror image similar in style to J-566, but with a different spacing of the letters. Mostly chocolate brown surfaces with traces of fiery red in the recesses of the designs. 62.1 grains. Provenance: Ex. Major Lenox R. Lohr; Robert Batchelder; R.B. White; Bowers and Merena, September 1989, Kissel, Lot 2583; Dr. A. Roter; S. Downey; Judd plate (7th and 9th editions), Pollock plate, Taxay plate. Needless to say, J-A1867-9 (The coin listed just prior to this coin) is to J-561 what J-A1867-15 is to J-566. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $9750

US70191 - Judd-632, Pollock-702, High R.7+. This rare pattern was an attempt to unify the designs of the two nickel alloy denominations. The obverse bears a strong resemblance to the three cent nickel, except in larger format. The reverse features a large Roman V within a wreath, similar to the later Liberty nickel, but the wreath is larger and there are no peripheral legends. A six-pointed star and scrollwork tops the wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Beautiful Gem richly toned in gold, powder-blue, and ruby-red colors and far more impressive in hand than the images convey. NGC has graded just 2 at this level with none finer while PCGS has not graded a single coin. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $9950

US70221 - Shield Nickel, No Date. Struck Thru Cap Die with Rays. The obverse is nearly featureless, although the shield is faintly evident upon patient evaluation. Struck in either 1866 or 1867, since the rays were removed during the latter year. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $1950

1866 Rays 5c MS64 NGC/CAC US70195 - F-24, Missing Leaf. A rare “Missing Leaf” variety. As described by Edward Fletcher in the Cherrypickers’ Guide, the master hub on Obverse Hub A omitted the outer leaf for the second right cluster. This fourth leaf was generally hand-engraved into working dies, but a few dies lack the leaf altogether such as with this example. Lustrous pale gold, well struck and a really neat find! US70181 - FS-302. Clear overdate with remnants of 1882 clearly visible and very distinct. Interestingly, this is a very early die stage as there is no die break seen passing through the 3 into the ball of the shield. NGC has graded just 4 at this level with 9 graded higher. Very clean and well struck, especially for the grade. Wholly original with a light gold patina. CAC Verified. From the IGWT Shield Nickel Variety Collection. $2350
