Harlan J. Berk, Ltd. Presents The Mark Wieclaw Collection of Oil Lamps 2019
Mark Wieclaw I’ve been a collector since the age of six. I remember trading baseball cards with a friend shortly before moving from Pennsylvania to the Chicago area in 1958. Searching for baseball cards, coins and beer cans filled my time for nearly twenty years. After getting married in 1974 my collecting habits didn’t stop, but took a different direction. Coins became my main focus, and in 1981 I discovered the wonderful world of ancient coins. Harlan Berk placed his Buy or Bid Sale in an issue of “Coin World”. The thought of being able to purchase a coin that was nearly two thousand years old for less than a hundred dollars was pretty amazing. At the Chicago International Coin Fare in 1983, a dealer of ancient coins also had several antiquities at his booth. His selection of oil lamps was quite varied. I chose one with just enough detail to make it interesting. For $35, I purchased a piece of history, something that was used to light the way of perhaps another collector many centuries ago. A few years later, that same dealer offered me a thousand lamps at fifteen dollars each. At the time, I didn’t have the funds to make such a large commitment, but purchased several lots of two hundred pieces at a slightly higher price over the next several years. None of those pieces have made it into this catalogue, but they served well as trading material in my quest to build my other collections of Chinese snuff bottles, coins, blown glass, etc. As you can see in this catalogue, lamps come in many shapes, sizes and materials. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of adding different and unusual pieces to any of my collections. It’s been a great adventure trying to find something a little different to add to this collection. Finding a lamp (#384) and the mold that it was made from is definitely the highlight of my searching. However, it is time to let the vast majority of them go and move on to something else. The one thing that I treasure most about forming my collections is the friendships that have been formed over the years. Enjoy your collections and be sure to a make a few good friends.

“The nozzle of this lamp is decorated with a menorah, the seven-branch lamp stand that stood in the Temple in Jerusalem. The menorah is oriented with its semicircular branches reaching toward the lamp’s filling hole and its five-legged base upon the wick hole. To either side of the menorah are dotted circles, possibly representing scrolls seen on end. A border of dotted leaves decorates the lamp’s shoulders, culminating in dotted circles as the border reaches the nozzle. Soot residue at the wick hole gives evidence of the lamp’s ancient use.
“Since the location and circumstances of the lamp’s discovery are not known, it is difficult to ascertain when and where it was made. One proposal is that the lamp is of the early Samaritan style, so called because lamps of this style are often found in the area of ancient Samaria north of Jerusalem. This region was home to Samaritans, Jews, and Christians in the third through fifth centuries when early Samaritan lamps were made.” L. 3 3/8” (8.6 cm). SOLD

Seven-branched menorah before handle faces fill-hole, while two nine-branched menorahs upon palm branches on shoulders between fill hole and wick hole. These menorahs feature nine branches and can therefore be of mainstream Jewish origin. As today many in the mainstream Jewish community did not model oil lamps in the exact form as those in the Temple. Conversely, those found with seven branches were likely molded by Samarians or less observant Jews.

“This lamp has an ovoid body, with a thick-rimmed trench the width of the wick hole running up to the filling hole. Outside this trench the entire top of the lamp is decorated with fine, raised lines, leaving no undecorated space (a style called horror vacui, literally “fear of empty space”) Fields to either side of the trench contain concentric semi-circles on a vertical axis, suggestive of menorahs. These stand atop downward-facing palm branch patterns, and other geometric shapes and linear adornment. The surface of the lamp behind the filling hole and in front of the handle features a radiated seven-branch menorah atop a multipod, pyramidal base.
“This may be a Samaritan late style lamp dating to the 6th – 7th centuries CE, or it may date to the Islamic period, 7th – 9th centuries, when lamps of very similar shape and design were made. As with many lamps, the lack of provenance (details about where this lamp was discovered) makes assessment of its date and location difficult.
“The palm branch was used in art throughout the ancient Near East and Mediterranean. It often represented victory, since palm branches were waved in victory processions. The closed palm frond, or lulav, was used in the Jewish feast of Sukkot (Tabernacles), and became one of the main Jewish symbols throughout the Greco-Roman world.
“The use of thin, raised lines in the designs on this lamp differs markedly from the bolder style of relief decoration on many other lamps of Late Antiquity. The menorah and palm branches are presented allusively, finely drawn and almost hidden in the midst of other linear shapes and decorations. It is a more abstract depiction than that seen, for example, in the portrayal of the menorah on the earlier Byzantine or Samaritan lamp in this exhibit. The rise of this less representational style of lamp decoration corresponds to a period when Jews were embracing “increasingly strict aniconic patterns” in their art. Beginning in the 6th century CE, mosaics in Jewish synagogues tended not to include figural images as they had in the 4th – 5th centuries, and many existing images in older synagogues were destroyed. The 7th – 9th centuries CE saw the rise and spread of Islam in the Near East, and the rise of Christian iconoclasm (destruction of images) in the Byzantine realm. Social and religious factors within both Judaism and Christianity, as well as external influences (including the aniconism of Islam), prompted Jews and Christians alike to reevaluate their art and experiment with less representational forms.” L. 4” (10.2 cm). “The presence of the menorah symbol on lamps used by Christians is a reminder of the Jewish roots of Christianity and the close interaction between Jewish and Christian communities that endured into Late Antiquity. The symbol of the menorah held significance for Christians as well as for Jews. Perhaps the unusual design of the menorah on these lamps was intended to evoke both the menorah and the palm frond. The palm, too, was an important symbol in Christianity, as in Judaism…” L. 5 1/2” (14 cm). SOLD

“Many lamps of this style have been found in the Jerusalem area, indicating it was a center for their production and local distribution. Called “slipper” style for their shape, these lamps often feature raised lines radiating outward from the rimmed filling hole, and a seven-branch candelabrum design on the nozzle, oriented with its tripod base on the filling hole and its center axis forming a straight line from the filling hole to the wick hole. When lit, the burning wick would give the impression that light was emanating from the center of the “menorah”… “L. 3 7/8” (9.8 cm). SOLD
