Q
Welcome to HJC, Pol! We are all very excited to have you representing the HJC brand for the next two seasons. Tell us about your decision to partner with HJC as you move forward in your career.
A
For me it’s a pleasure to become part of the HJC family. I already knew from the outside looking in that HJC was improving very fast in the development of their racing helmets, and I was really surprised when I tested their new helmet on the track. The opportunity has come at the best moment, as I’m also facing a completely new adventure and an ambitious one. I’m ready to enjoy this period.
Q
2020 saw you earn two pole positions and six podium finishes, ending the season in a career-best fifth place in the premier-class points standings. Tell us about your success last year and how you’re feeling at this point in your career.
A
I’m very proud of where we were able to finish after four years of a project that began as a bet and with many question marks. Those four years forced me to put everything on the table while requiring me to learn many new things as a rider. We weren’t expecting to have a season like that back when we were in winter testing, although we realized that some things had improved. When the season finished, even I was blaming specific moments during the season that didn’t let me reach the best results possible, so this will let you understand how big the success actually was—finishing fifth in the championship while tying in points for fourth was amazing!!! The important thing apart from the results was that we showed really good consistency and also that I learned many things, things that can help me in the new project.
Q
Your performance in 2020 captured the attention of arguably the best team in the paddock. Talk about your move to factory Honda.
A
You can’t say no to the most successful team in the paddock! And you can’t say no to a bike that has won so many titles in the last several years with Márquez. I have always thought that the RCV could fit with my riding style, so I had no doubts about my decision. I have reached a point in my career where I need to test myself, and the Repsol Honda team is the best place to do this. I know that it’s not going to be easy, but I’m also used to difficulties.
Q
What are your expectations and goals for the 2021 season?
A
Obviously I need to be ambitious because HRC wants top results, and I do too, but I also have to be realistic and understand that first I have to learn many things, and I really don’t know how much time I will need to adapt myself to the bike—this particular bike can be very difficult to adapt to.
Q
Let’s talk about your new helmet. What do you think of the new RPHA 1?
A
I’ve told you that I was impressed from outside about what HJC is doing, and I’m confirming that I was right. We have a long season in front of us, but I’m very happy with how I have felt from the first moment I used the RPHA 1—in every single aspect.
Q
Lastly, you’ve enjoyed a long career so far in the MotoGP ranks. If you had one piece of advice for yourself at a younger age, what would veteran Pol tell rookie Pol?
A
This one is difficult, but maybe I would tell young Pol to be more patient in some moments and try to focus more when he has a problem. I’m happy with my career, but of course there are many things I could have done better, understanding also that I started in the championship when I was 15 and that I made my debut in MotoGP at only 21. I still feel young with many things still left to prove in MotoGP! WWW.HJCHELMETS.COM
