COMMUNITY

A Royal Gala in Ratho Ratho is one of our smaller villages, but when it comes to their annual Children’s Gala Day, they go all out. Ratho Gala Committee member Claire Gibson, and this year’s crowner Mary Fairley, tell us why the old Scottish Gala traditions are still important today, and how Ratho makes it work in the 21st century.

The old traditions are still relevant –––– What makes the Gala is the children. Seeing them enjoying it, all dressed up and part of the parade is a massive deal for everyone in the village - whether it’s your child or not!

Mary has had three generations of her family in the Royal Party including a Queen, Crown Bearer and Lady in Waiting. Mary decorated her house with an arch and flowers to proudly show that her children were involved. Parents of this year’s Royal Party will be doing exactly the same. Mary remembers her son introducing the ‘100s club’ - a monthly prize draw, which for the last 30 years has been the Gala’s main source of fundraising each year. Typically - Mary herself has never won a penny!

Not familiar with traditionTalhe Scottish Gala traditions? ceremony in a nutshell: joined

Making old traditions work in 2015 –––– We typically have the same roles in

the Royal Party every year, but this year, due to the increased number of P1 children, we’ve introduced a new role of ‘Maid of Honour’ and increased the number of ‘Page Boys’ and ‘Knights’. We felt it was important that every P1 child gets an opportunity to be included - rather than some being left out. It is their Gala after all. The ceremony follows the same format and scripts each year, but this year we’re updating the Herald’s speech so the children can relate to it. And what’s more - our Herald this year is a girl. Previous it’s always been a boy. Mary shares some of the other traditions for the Gala which have not been continued…”it used to be a whole week of activities - with more races and events for the children, and a few for the rest of us too. We had a pram race along the canal - stopping at each pub along the way!! There was even a race for old folks! We used to jump the canal too and race rubber ducks down it using a hose from a fire engine. After the Gala we used to dance at night with an accordion player.”

Letting the children shape their Gala –––– This year we asked the

children to pick the theme for the Gala and encouraged them to think about how they can bring the theme to life. They chose animals, and to have animal themed music for their entrances at the ceremony - so that will really spice things up!

What would you say to someone who hasn’t been to the Gala before? –––– Mary and Claire

both agreed people should come along and see the Gala for themselves. Everyone in Ratho, and neighbouring towns too, is welcome to join us on Saturday 13 June. The parade will be leaving Ratho Church at 11.30, with the crowning ceremony in Ratho (Bottom) Park at 12.30 followed by many other events and fun to be had for the whole family.

TRIBUTE

Louise Duncan “Run for me, dance for me, think of me” Louise Duncan was always someone with time, a smile and a welcome for everyone she met. Her five years as Minister at Balerno Parish Church established her as one of the best known and most loved people in the community. She was involved in so many different aspects of village life – from the creation and running of the Mill café, to the setting up of Balerno Village Screen, to development of the Palm dementia group, to active participation in the local schools as mum and chaplain and encouragement of fair trade days, music festivals and Christmas tree festivals. In her (rare) leisure time, her two passions were running and dancing – whether training for marathons or dancing to Abba, she loved doing things that helped her engage with people as well as feeling active and free. Louise’s untimely death aged 41 from a rare form of bone cancer has left a huge void in her family’s life and that of the community’s. Her funeral was attended by over 1200 people – a tribute to her personal impact on those local and from much wider afield. Both Louise and her family were always grateful for the care given to her by the Marie Curie Hospice who looked after her during her illness and where she died on 17 February. Her family are keen both to celebrate Louise’s life and raise money for the ongoing work undertaken by Marie Curie. In light of Louise’s own words in the video that she recorded for her service: “Run for me, dance for me, think of me”, they are organising a weekend of celebration and fundraising on 21-23 August 2015. Everyone is warmly encouraged to come along and take part in a weekend that promises to be fabulous and fun. While final details of the weekend are still being worked out, the planned programme currently includes: Friday 21 August –––– an evening of cinema to include family films and a Late Night Party Film with Cocktails. 10

Louise Duncan Saturday 22 August –––– a team relay run event with three stages of very different lengths (one very short!) – prizes for the team with the youngest and oldest combined ages and for the team that raises the most money. A coffee morning at St Josephs. A disco and ceilidh evening for all ages. Ticket price to include food. Sunday 23 August –––– A service of celebration and praise at Balerno Parish church – everyone of all ages and walks of faith warmly welcomed. A community picnic lunch in the grounds of the church – come along and share a meal with friends and new acquaintances! There will also be a silent auction running over the weekend – prizes include signed football shirts; gourmet meals and afternoon teas and much much more. Any donations of prizes are also really welcome – please contact the organising team. Details of how to find out more about the event, the silent auction and how to contact the organisers will be found on the website – www. runformedanceforme.org.uk which will be set up soon or in the meantime from the office of Balerno Parish Church. Let’s make it a weekend to remember! KONECT

Improving Home Security Your house contains your most valuable possessions, so it makes sense to keep it properly protected. There are a number of simple, inexpensive measures you can do to beat the thieves, and reduce the chances of you having to make a claim. Follow the tips below and everybody will be happy – except the burglars.

point of entry for a burglar. Similarly, don’t leave garden tools out – they only help thieves force their way into your home.

Lock your doors It’s absolutely crucial that your home’s doors are secure. The doors must be sturdy and in good condition, fitted with bolts and deadlocks. Patio doors should have a multi-locking point system. • Extra deterrents • Outdoor lighting is an ideal burglar deterrent • A burglar alarm visible from the street • Remove any valuables from your window ledges • Consider placing high value jewellery and watches in a safe • Timer switches. Switching lights on and off giving the impression that someone is home

Many burglaries result from a thief getting in through a window – but even the simplest of window locks will help put them off. Locks means the thief would have to smash the window, which many are reluctant to do as the noise attracts unwanted attention. And keep window keys out of the locks and hidden from sight.

• Don’t leave spare keys under the doormat or plant pot

Never leave a ladder lying around your property. It makes the most inaccessible of windows an easy

“Let’s talk about dementia”

The theme of this year’s Alzheimer’s Scotland Dementia Awareness Week is “Let’s talk about Dementia” during this week local events and activities are being held to raise awareness and help overcome the stigma of dementia. The local dementia group PALM are inviting people to come along to have a coffee, cake and blether at one of their three local events. At these events you will be able to find out more about dementia including how to become a “Dementia Friend” and contribute to the Pentland Dementia Friendly Communities Project. Over the last year the local PALM group who run a successful cafe for people with Dementia and their Carers has embarked on the Dementia Friendly Communities Project for the Pentland areas of Currie, Balerno and Juniper Green. Supported by Alzheimer’s Scotland & the City of Edinburgh Initiative “Making Edinburgh Dementia Friendly” they are hoping to develop various local initiatives

to support people with dementia and to make sure that they remain part of the community rather than being excluded. This can only happen with the interest and support of local people. At the three events they are hoping to hear people’s stories, listen to their concerns and gather their ideas about what needs to be done to make our communities more dementia friendly. The events are open to all, if you have dementia yourself, are a carer, have a friend with dementia or if you meet people with dementia in your day to day life in a shop, local business or club come along and share your experiences and ideas. The three information events are being held on: Saturday May 30th in Currie Rugby Club at Balerno Gala Day 2pm-4pm; Thursday June 4th in Currie Library Community Room 10am-5pm and Friday June 5th in The Mill @ St Joseph’s Balerno 10am-1pm. village people by Suzanne Green

Kids Love Clothes Fiona Shapcott lives in Ratho with her dog Maisie. She has always had a desire to recycle and re-use, and to help others. Several years ago Fiona organised a “clothes swap”, telling her friends to bring along any unwanted clothing. “It was a free for all!” says Fi. “There was a lot left over, which I took to a charity shop.” Fiona noticed that charity shops don’t always have a lot of kids’ clothing, yet many parents struggle to afford new clothes for their children – especially considering how quickly kids grow. She knew that most mums are happy to pass on clothing their children have outgrown, often in “nearly new” condition. An idea started to formulate. In late 2009 Fi set up “Kids Love Clothes” with the help of a friend. The idea is simple: Parents donate clothing their children no longer need, and volunteers sort it according to sex and age. Then, responding to referrals from local health visitors, social workers and other professionals, the initiative provides children with a wardrobe’s worth of clothes. Items are ironed, then neatly folded and packed into stylish gift bags and, where possible, a warm jacket and pair of shoes is included. Often an age-appropriate book and a small toy are added to the bags. “I can honestly say that 100% of the families who receive these gift bags appreciate being given beautifully presented, well cared for clothes,” comments an Edinburgh health visitor. “They feel that there is dignity and a value placed on them and their children, which they often don’t experience.” In 2013 Fi received a phone call from Julie Thomson, who wanted to make a donation as she 18

Fiona Shapcott (left) and Julie Thomson Photos by Suzanne Green would soon be moving house. Just half an hour into the conversation Julie had caught the vision for Kids Love Clothes! A graphic designer, she offered to revamp the website. “Having Jules on board has been wonderful,” says Fi. “She has the ability to temper me without knocking the wind out of my sails!” In the autumn of 2013, a Ratho farmer offered to rent Fiona a secure building at a reasonable rate, and she and Julie transferred all of the donated clothes and shoes. Kids Love Clothes acquired registered charity status, and key people joined the team, including an accountant, an events manager and a driver. To date the charity has provided more than 1,500 gift bags to children (0-10 years) from families across Edinburgh and the Lothians. The charity is currently organising an “Ironathon” to be held at Edinburgh’s International Climbing Centre on 5 September. Twenty-five men and women will iron 50 bags of clothing, providing 50 children with a wardrobe! The sponsored volunteers will each raise a minimum of £100. “If everyone raises £300,” says Fi, “that will mean a total of 7.5 thousand pounds, and Gift Aid will take it up to just under £10,000!” To find out more about this event or Kids Love Clothes, email Fiona at: info@kidsloveclothes.co.uk

MONEY MATTERS

Venture Capital Trusts

by Personal Money Management

In previous articles we have emphasised the tax advantages of contributing to a Personal Pension Plan (PPP) i.e. a £100 investment will only cost you £80 if you are a basic tax payer and only £60 if you are a higher tax payer. We have also emphasised the tax efficiency of investing in New Individual Savings Accounts (NISA). Some readers have asked what to do if they have invested the maximum allowed into their PPP and their NISA. A possible answer is Venture Capital Trusts (VCT).

What is a Venture Capital Trust? VCTs were introduced in 1995. They provide generous tax incentives to encourage individuals to invest in smaller companies listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM). Tax Reliefs Investors must be individuals aged 18 or over and a UK resident to qualify for the tax relief of 30%. This brings the initial cost of say a £10000 investment down to only £7000. In addition dividends are tax free and there is no Capital Gains Tax when you come to sell. You must hold the shares for five years or the tax relief is clawed back. Obviously, VCTs should be considered as long term investments. Conclusions Although VCTs can include investment in wellknown companies such as Majectic Wines, they should be considered higher risk. It is because of this higher risk the Government allows the very generous tax concessions. However, for the right investor they offer a highly efficient method of diversifying a portfolio and a potential source of valuable tax free dividend income.

The Wheel Specialist

To the rescue! The Wheel Specialist in Edinburgh are on a mission to save and spice-up the wheels of local residents. Local Edinburgh couple Craig & Julia Gott decided to take on the running of the local branch after their friends (also a couple who run the Newcastle branch) pointed them in the right direction. The Wheel Specialist is able to take scuffed, scratched and corroded alloy wheels, and through highly specialist and perfected processes, they are able to restore them back to factory fresh looking condition. In addition to this, they offer a whole host of services and repairs for wheels. In short, if it’s to do with your wheels, see The Wheel Specialist. Recognising the potential of the business, Craig & Julia were also excited by the prospect of being able to offer a service whereby customers can drop-off their vehicles and pick them back up with “wow-factor wheels” within the same day. Craig Gott said, “We’ve seen the business go from strength to strength over the last few months,

and now that we can also refurbish Diamond Cut wheels the demand seems to be increasing every week”. It would seem that for the former hotelier duo, making the move to The Wheel Specialist was a “wheely” good one! The process involves stripping the wheel back to bare metal before shotblasting and hand sanding. The wheel is then baked in an oven before powder coating, it is then cured before applying the final finish , lacquering and curing again. The result is a fantastic finish which any car owner would be proud of. For more information and an instant quote for your wheels visit: www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk

BALERNO’S CYCLING CLUB

Fietsclub BalernO A group of local cycling enthusisasts got together last year in an informal group, and a new Balerno cycling club evolved.

They meet most Sundays at 8.30am for a spin – a quick email to members at the end of the week establishes who is available, and the ride is tailored to suit whoever is coming. On days when there is a larger turnout they may split up and do two rides for different ability levels.

mallenymortgagesolutions.com & Delta DNA www. deltadna.com. Various events and club excursions are planned for this year. Sean Baty, the STV weatherman is doing a charity cycle across Scotland in June (http:// pedalforscotland.org/2015/04/sean-batty-to-cyclefrom-coast-to-coast-in-stv-appeal-challenge/), and will pass through Balerno on the 13th. Fietsclub Balerno will ride out to Carnwath then ride back into Balerno with him where there will be a reception event, with some accompanying fundraising for the charity (https://www.justgiving.com/seanbatty2015/). For more information on Fietsclub Balerno please contact Allan Jackson at jacksonallan74@gmail.com

And the name? “Fietsclub” means Cycle Club in Dutch. A couple of group members are Dutch, and, discussing over a beer a cycling race in Flanders that is notorious for bad weather, it seemed appropriate to give the club a Dutch name to celebrate the bad weather in common! Fietsclub Balerno recently got sponsorship for an official kit. They are very grateful to the following local businesses for their sponsorship: Just Bike Repairs (Juniper Green) www.justbikerepairs. co.uk, Malleny Mortgate Solutions www.

Interiors feature

Home improvement ideas from EKCO for under £5,000 Picture it. Your home needs spruced up but like Shakin’ Stevens and Rosemary Clooney you don’t have time to fix your shingles. Not only that but the tap in the bathroom leaks the handle being held in place by an elastic hair tie you’ve ‘borrowed’ from your daughter’s bedroom, the kitchen cupboard door hinges are getting worn and the garden shed needs a coat of something that ‘does what it says on the tin.’ Maybe it’s time to call in a professional but they’re so expensive aren’t they? Not necessarily. Here are a few ideas from EKCO for investing in some home improvements for under £5,000.

1

Free up some attic space – If you need more space in your attic but currently have a water tank slap-bang in middle then why not replace your old boiler with a new-fangled combiboiler? The price for having a new combi fitted varies so shop around but you will get plenty of change from your budget – enough in fact to floor your attic as well.

2

Fit new bifold doors – If you currently have traditional sliding patio doors that have seen better days you could replace them with

bifolds. Aluminium bifold frames come in up to 150 different colours to suit your style of décor – inside and out! The real beauty however, is that they open up fully to remove any barriers to your garden and flood your home with light and air. For busy people the other good news is that they’re virtually maintenance free and guaranteed for 20 years. The cost of fitting bifold doors to replace a standard two door patio aperture would be just under £5k including the bottle of chilled champagne you can sip while you admire your garden from your lounge.

3

Kitchen makeover – Depending on the area you have available you will get anything from two or three top quality units and decent appliances to a larger reasonably priced budget kitchen for your money. If you have a fairly large kitchen already you could look at replacing the doors, drawer fronts and even perhaps the worktops while keeping the existing carcasses.

14

En-suite – Fed up with having to get to the bathroom before your teenagers? Then you could turn a dead space into an en-suite. A reasonable shower with a walk in cubicle, new toilet suite, tiling a flooring can be fitted for your budget. It will be like a holiday in itself and you may have some cash left over to buy an extra couple of loo rolls!

KITCHENS | BATHROOMS | BIFOLD DOORS | SUNROOMS

Many ideas, one solution At EKCO we’ve been supplying and installing top quality Pronorm German-built kitchens and bathrooms since 1999. We’re also one of Scotland’s top suppliers of Origin bi-fold doors which are designed to open fully and allow more fresh air into your home. And, if you need some extra space or simply a place to relax and unwind then we can create that lifestyle sunroom you have always dreamed of.

Recipe from Hopetoun Farm Shop

Lady Hopetoun’s Easy Lamb Chops As we eagerly anticipate the delivery of fresh Spring lamb from our Estate to our butchery in June here’s a very simple recipe for lamb chops as supplied by Lady Hopetoun. By choosing fresh local lamb you need to do very little to the meat create a delicious meal in minutes. Ingredients 3 large or 4 medium lamb chops per person English mustard Brown Sugar Method: Preheat the grill to the highest temperature. Place the chops on a grill tray. Spread a thin layer of mustard over each chop and then sprinkle with brown sugar (a small pinch per chop. Grill the chops for 3 minutes (pink), 4 minutes (medium), or 5 minutes (very well done). Remove from the grill and turn the chops over. Spread the other side of the chops with mustard and sprinkle over the sugar making sure plenty of the sugar goes on the fatty part. Return to the grill and cook for a further 3, 4 or 5 minutes depending on how well you like your lamb cooked. 3 minutes a side results in a pink chop with crispy fat. Best served with dauphinoise potatoes or mashed potatoes, broccoli and sliced mushrooms fried in butter.

Lady Hopetoun’s Easy Lamb Chops Fresh lamb sourced direct from the Hopetoun Estate is available all year around at the butchery within Hopetoun Farm Shop. Spring lamb is due to come in towards the end of June. Hopetoun Farm Shop, Hopetoun Woods, Newton, EH52 6QZ Tel: 01506 830716. www.hopetounfarmshop.co.uk © www.flickr.com/semi-detached

shows that a fathers’ involvement with his child is hugely important for the child’s development and for their educational success. Talking about the school day, helping with homework and supporting activities at school mean that your child is more likely to do well at school.

It’s Father’s Day this month! by Pat Banfill

Playing sensitively with your child at 2 years affects their security at 10 and their adjustment and self esteem at 16. Being willing to comfort them when they are small will help them to get on better with other children when they are older. Fathers who don’t live with their children but have good contact help their children to feel special and affirmed, impart information and knowledge and build the child’s self esteem and ability to get on with others.

When it comes to being a good father, only one word matters…relationship.

Just a few thoughts to encourage Dads . Not that doing all this will guarantee lots of cards on Father’s Day, but it might help!

Capture the heart of this and you will not only enjoy your children but you will give them a security that will last a lifetime. A growing body of evidence

WALK

by Karen Murray Walk distance: 4.25 km Time: 1.25 hrs (unless you dawdle to look at the views) Ascent: 137m Terrain: woodland & grassy paths – can be muddy

How lucky we are living where we do – not only are we blessed with stunning scenery all around, we also live on the outskirts of a city populated with fabulous parks and hills. It’s easy to dismiss going into the city to walk but you would be missing some great panoramic vistas. A busy day rushing into the city to run errands, drop children off, fail to find some street parking, resort to an extortionate car park and manage to take 20 minutes to actually find a space…equals the need for a brisk yomp over the hills on the way home. So one reluctant daughter and I parked up on Braid Road (Morningside area) and headed into the wooded glen of the Hermitage of Braid Nature Reserve and followed one of the many paths through the woods and over the hill. Turn left by the map board to follow the narrower path that heads through the trees along the left side of the Braid Burn. There’s a pretty doocot uphill on the left - thought to date to the late 17th century, it has 1,965 nest-holes. The path eventually re-joins the main route on the other side of the burn. Next comes Hermitage House - a splendid piece of eighteenth century architecture, once the home of Charles Gordon of Cluny. These days it is a visitor centre for the glen. Immediately after the house the path forks. We took the left branch that runs beneath the right side of the building and then climbs steeply amongst the trees. Another right turn followed immediately by a left via a stile and you reach an open grassy area. Head directly across towards the mast on Blackford Hill where you come to a gap in a stone wall.

KONECT

Through the gap turn left and fork right onto a narrower path which cuts around the flank of the hill with a steep unprotected drop on the left. Now you really get a view – Edinburgh Castle, the Old Town, Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags. The ground becomes grassy here. To the right you climb more steeply towards the Royal Observatory complex. Bear right and you reach the trig point on the summit. Blackford is one of the seven hills on which Edinburgh is famously built and the views are stunning. We enjoyed the quintessential Scottish weather of four seasons in one day (literally) so we didn’t linger to enjoy the view too much as we were ‘enjoying’ some horizontal rain at that particular moment! Heading back towards the Observatory, turn right before you reach it crossing both a tarred and a grassy and aim towards the left edge of the prominent Corbie’s Crag - a miniature crag and tail. The path then heads back down through the gorse and bears right into the woods. There are so many different paths you can take here that there is plenty of variety for subsequent wanderings. However we turned right to follow the main path upstream back to the Hermitage of Braid to return to the car on Braid Road. A great way to blow away the cobwebs after a busy day and get the mind back on track.
