Jen Crook Scotland – the warm-up for Antarctica
LOCAL resident Jen Crook is training to be the first woman to do a solo unsupported walk to the South Pole and back from the edge of Antarctica. A keen sportswoman, she kicks off her training this winter with a two-month hike from the south to the north of Scotland during the harshest time of the year, taking in a few mountains along the way... “Conditions in the mountains in Scotland in winter can be pretty harsh,” explains Jen. “A snow-covered mountain range is not to be tackled without the right experience and equipment.” She’s no stranger to mountains though. She became hooked on them when she came to Scotland to study theoretical physics at St Andrews, joined the RAF Reserves, becoming involved in Search and Rescue. She fell in love with Scotland’s wide open spaces, the mountains and the lack of population pressure. And how did she end up near Edinburgh? “After St Andrews I did a post-graduate degree in photography and film at Edinburgh University and set up a photography and film business. Wedding photography is my bread-and-butter income, and I get various interesting film assignments and climbing photography work. I was in the States earlier this year filming Sarah Outen [a woman who rowed, kayaked and cycled around the globe] as she set out to row across the Atlantic. I needed to find new accommodation near Edinburgh for when I returned, so I searched on the internet for places to rent within five miles of Ratho Climbing Centre!” Branding it her “Scottish Adventure - the Winter Slog,” Jen is using this trip, (the first of several including one to Iceland next year), to practice trip planning, sponsorship and fund raising. She’ll be accompanied for the two month hike
Jen Crook by her Labrador, Haggis. “As I get more and more into the planning of this I realise that it has pretty much become my job now. The wedding photography business goes quiet over winter so this is a good time to do my first long hike.” Haggis was a rehomed dog who, when she came to Jen, was obese and unfit. But after two and a half years of living with Jen, who spends as much time as possible climbing and hiking, Haggis is now very fit and healthy and loves the hills. Charity fund raising is a major part of the expedition and Jen takes it very seriously. “As a small child I was motivated to raise money for charities, making things and selling them. During my teenage years though I think I was too busy rebelling against everything and everybody! But when I started looking at charities to support for this trip I surprised myself by how much I really, really care. If I have the opportunity to raise a lot of money for charity then there’s no question, I’m doing it.” She spent a long time deciding which to support for this trip, trawling the Charities Register. The two which resonated with her were International Animal Rescue and Soi Dog Foundation. “It seems fitting, especially since Haggis is coming with me on this trip, to pick animal charities this time.” She has secured sponsorship from Ruffwear for Haggis’ gear, and
from Lowe Alpine and Rab outdoor clothing for herself. If Jen ultimately succeeds in her Antarctic expedition (planned for 2017/18) she will be only the fourth person ever to have done it unsupported, and the other three were men. Is it the challenge of being the first woman to do it that motivates her? “Yes there is definitely an element of that – being the first. The excitement of thinking ‘is this even possible?’ if no other woman has ever done it. The thought of walking on terrain that no other human has ever walked on.” Did she grow up on stories polar explorers? “No, but I read ‘Race to the Pole’ and that set me thinking. So I was more inspired by Ben Fogle than by Scott or Shackleton!” She also read about Cas and Jonesy, two Australians who were the first to do the trip unsupported from outside help in 2012. “I realised that I was so focussed on my film business, and concentrating on how it was going to develop in the future in a career in film, that I was loosing the spark that had set me on that course in the first place. I was living in the future instead of the present. I’d been wondering about tackling Antarctica for several years and after reading about Cas and Jonesy I just decided to commit to it and go for it.” The charities that Jen picks for the Antarctica trip will probably be peoplerelated – drugs/alchohol issues, or anything else that stops people from achieving their goals in life. In the meantime, the Winter Slog through Scotland is kicking off mid January and Jen is busy preparing. She would love for people to join her and Haggis for parts of it to increase awareness of the trip, have fun out in the hills and increase the money raised.

Art, Life and Africa Balerno resident Lynne Campbell works part-time as a Marketing Coordinator for a software company. She is married to Jim, a Chartered Accountant, and they are the parents of Ross (21) and Joanna (19). “I’ve been drawing and painting since I was a child,” says Lynne Campbell. “It has always been my main interest. But I didn’t go to art college. When I was in high school, the careers advice was: get a degree and do art in your spare time.” Lynne studied German and Business Studies at Edinburgh University before embarking on an IT sales and marketing career. Art was still important to her, but she didn’t find it easy to work full-time and paint in her spare time. Setting up, cleaning brushes and putting everything away again takes time! When she took a career break to start a family, Lynne decided it was time to look into an art course. “I had always regretted not going to art college,” she says, “so I enrolled in an Open College of the Arts painting course – similar to Open University. I worked when the children were sleeping, or at school and nursery.” Once a month Lynne went to the Leith School of Art, where her tutor was Juniper Green artist Jacqueline Watt. “She was very inspirational,” Lynne comments. “Jacqueline used to say: ‘If art’s not a struggle, you’re not doing it right’, words I still find encouraging when a piece isn’t coming along as I’d hoped! “Creating art makes me feel fulfilled. I love going up the Pentlands with the dog, a flask of coffee and a sketch pad. Yet it’s the thing that I do ‘if I have time’– I don’t prioritize it. Nevertheless, I will be able to carve out more time now that the kids are older and I am working just three days a week.” Lynne loves working with colour and using oils. She also enjoys doing pet portraits (mostly dogs), 16
using pastels. “It’s fun trying to capture their character,” she says. “I try to find the underlying structure of their face and then have fun drawing in the fur and all the colour variations you see if you look closely. People love their pets, and I enjoy seeing the satisfaction these portraits give them.” Other commissions have included mountain views, seascapes and even someone’s nursing home. Currently Lynne is preparing to lead a team from her church to visit Challenge Ministries in Swaziland. “A friend of mine helps to lead this amazing organisation,” she explains, “which is involved in orphan care, drug rehabilitation and community development. My son, Ross, has volunteered there twice, and last year our whole family went out to visit him. In October our team of 11 will get the opportunity to observe the projects first-hand.” Lynne is very enthusiastic about this chance to “see the African Church in action”. Let’s keep our eyes open for hints of Africa in her upcoming works of art.

November is the month for celebrating Thanksgiving in the US. Originally it was a celebration hosted by the first pilgrims to give thanks for their survival in their first year in the new world.
Here we may or may not celebrate Thanksgiving itself, but it is a good practice to be thankful for the good things around us. And when we compare our lives with some of the lives we see portrayed in the news as people in other parts of the world live through political turmoil, war, natural disasters, whatever else is happening in our lives, we have something to be thankful for. So why not set aside some time to count your blessings in your family, maybe to have a thanksgiving meal together, choose to give something to a favourite charity, or to help a neighbour in some way, and develop a thankful attitude? WALK
In among the bulrushes Karen Murray takes the lead from a friend and finds a new path
Always one in search of a new place to ramble, I was delighted to join a friend when she suggested a new woodland walk that had appeared near where she lives. West Mains is a new development of some mighty grand houses on the edge of West Lothian between West Calder and Woolfords. They have been built as part of a West Lothian initiative known as Lowland Crofting Development, whereby these rural houses are built on the understanding that footpaths and woodland area are created too. In this case over 100 acres of new woodland has been planted as well as several kilometres of footpaths. We parked up in a wee lay-by on the opposite to the where the pathways are and where a lovely new map shows the various paths you can take. Presumably planted to mature as these new houses mature, a new woodland area has been established with gritted pathways, ponds and native trees. It is all currently very young woodland and the day we ventured out was not the best weatherwise, but never ones to be deterred, we struck boldly forth to see where these newly laid paths would take us. The first path skirts the edge of a field with the newly planted trees on the other side. On an early autumn slightly misty, drizzly day, this path was ideal for leaf-kicking as we marched along, me reminiscing about all the leaves I kicked as a child: my favourite autumn activity, combined with bramble picking. We did try the latter but a distinct lack of sun had delayed the ripening of the said berries and we were maybe a week or so too early.

After around 15 minutes of strolling and chatting, the path split in two and as we hadn’t retained the information from the map in our heads, we randomly selected the right hand option and were soon delighted to come upon one of the ponds that have been included in the woodland development. It may be a small thing, but the pond was filled with bulrushes and somehow that seemed a little magical to me. There is something I just love about bulrushes... The pond spills over to a babbling brook with lots of foliage shading its banks and once more there is a choice of paths. My friend has wandered this woodland a couple of times and knew roughly which path led where, but we decided just to go with how we felt and make a rough circuit of the woodland, enjoying the views, the dog walkers, the foliage and the companionship of a good friend accompanying you on a walk. The latter led me to contemplate my walking habits. While I do enjoy some alone time walking so that I can relax and clear my head, my preference is definitely for company. I enjoy the exercise, the fresh air and the scenery, but it’s all much more enjoyable when shared, partly I think because a trouble shared is a trouble halved as they say. Walking alone can salve the soul and clear the

mind, but a good old gossip and sharing of the day’s cares can be quite cathartic. Combine this with the exercise for body that the walk is giving you and why would you not want to grab those moments when you can? My friend and I could have gone shopping, headed to the cinema or enjoyed lunch out, but a good brisk walk in the countryside while chatting was the best medicine for that day – and we had coffee and cake afterwards so all was good!
new which makes it a great spot for revisiting. On our return to the car, we decided to check out the trail on the layby side of the wood just for some added exercise. That too was an extra little amble that was quite different from the first walk as the trees were fully mature, the terrain grassy and uneven and the gradient quite steep. Worth the extra circuit though as it made us feel we deserved the coffee and cake.
Going back the walk, the paths in this new woodland walk do all circumnavigate the new-build houses in some respect and each time you visit, you could take a different route and spot something

To buy or not to buy: Lloyds Banking Group by Personal Money Management
The government saved Lloyds from collapse in 2009 and is now reducing part of its remaining 10.97% stake through a general offering. George Osborne said, and I quote “I don’t want the shares to go to city institutions I want them to go to members of the public”.
As an incentive members of the public will be offered a 5% discount on the share price at the time of the sale. In addition if you hold onto your shares for at least 12 months you will get an extra 1 share for every 10 you hold and hence taking the two incentives together it is basically a discount of 15%.
The sting in the tail The treasury have said that they want to give preference to small shareholders and hence priority will go for those investing £1,000 or less and the bonus share incentive will be capped at £200 per investor.

Not an easy question. Since many readers of this column will have already invested in ISAs with a diverse portfolio it could be worthwhile putting £1,000 aside in the Lloyds sell off. However as always financial advice should be sought.

Landscaping Award
Local landscaper Andy Shaw recently won a nationwide landscaping competition run by Travis Perkins, building and landscape suppliers. Their High 5 Competition was designed to find the best landscaping job in Britain. The competition was fronted by TV’s Melinda Messenger. Andy Shaw and business partner Chris Wright caught the eye of Cowboy Builders presenter Melinda and the Travis Perkins High 5 judges with their beautiful work which showcased an impressive multi-level garden using different materials. The prize was lunch with Melinda at the glamorous Kensington Roof Gardens, and a luxury city break for two. Hundreds of entries flooded in and the judges were blown away by a variety work which included innovative use of materials, creative paving and beautiful planting. A total of five regional winners were crowned, from Scotland, Wales, Northern, Central and Southern England. Andy says, “I love my work and take a lot of pride in it, so to be honoured like this is really special. I’m not sure what’s better - winning the prize or getting to meet Melinda Messenger!” Melinda Messenger adds: “Travis Perkins wanted to see the best landscaping the country has to offer and the entries we received confirmed the quality of work that’s going on all over the country. Picking the winners was incredibly hard, but Andy’s entry stood out. I really enjoyed meeting him to say ‘well done’ in person - now I need to see if he’s free to come k and transform my garden!”

Balerno Parish Church Christmas Fair 2015 The frosts are nipping, gloves and hats are being dug out of drawers and the mince pies are stacked high on the shelves! This can only mean one thing… the countdown to Christmas has begun! Balerno Parish Church are once more delighted to invite you to come along, be merry and celebrate the start of the Christmas season with our fantastic Christmas Fair. As always it is very much a family affair and we are pleased to say that as with previous years, children get in for FREE! This year’s fair will run on Saturday 28th November, from 1pm to 3.30pm in Balerno High School and festivities will kick off with a return of our fun-tastic “Reindeer Rampage”. We invite all children who wish to participate, to don reindeer antlers and jingle some bells - with their parent’s/ guardians if they wish - and run a short route (starting at Balerno Parish Church and ending at Balerno High School) to celebrate the opening of the Christmas Fair. Please congregate in the church garden from 12.45pm. Reindeer antlers will be available to buy on the day for £1.50 if you don’t have your own! There will be lots of opportunities to start, or if you are super organised, complete your Christmas shopping at the many stalls offering a wide selection of Christmas gifts. Refreshments will be
available and there is a host of FREE entertainment for young and old including The Balerno Parish Church Jubilate Group who are busy working on some new and entertaining interpretations of Christmas tunes. After their recent roaring success with Bohemian Rhapsody we can’t wait! The Fair is a great way to keep the kids happy on a cold November afternoon. Santa will once more take a break from his busy schedule to visit the children during the Fair in our very own pop up grotto. There will also be face painting, hair wraps, games, a quiz, winter craft and much more. It promises to be another fun-filled afternoon and the perfect way to kick off the run up to Christmas and help raise some money for our nominated charities! This year’s charities are the Balerno Play Park Improvement Project, the Mercy Corps and The St Joseph Centre. So why not spend some family time together, take the chance to catch up with friends or pop along for some festive cheer! Cookery Myth Busters 3 Be jammy
Equipment Heavy bottomed pan. (If enamel it must not be chipped because the acid from fruit will react with it and taint the jam) Measuring jug A couple of small plates put in the fridge before you start. Long handled wooden spoon Glass jars, warmed in the oven at 80C. You can re-use jars of any shape you like. My children think me really sad; I even have favourite old pots from long lost products such as Sunny Spread and the moulded jars from Rose’s lime marmalade! Jam covers. I prefer cellophane (these come from Lakeland but also many other shops). For jelly: A boiled clean cotton cloth. Method Simple jam is made from fruit weight for weight with sugar e.g. 1lb fruit to 1lb sugar. Some fruit is easier to set than others because they all have different amounts of pectin, the setting agent. This can be corrected by using lemon juice, so if you see a recipe specifying it don’t cut it out. Jelly is made by cooking fruit gently till the juices run and then dripping it over-night through a cloth and collecting and measuring the liquid. Then you need 1 lb sugar to 1 pint of liquid.
I love making jam, it appeals to the squirrel in me! There is nothing to be worried about when tackling making jam - you don’t need special equipment despite the marketing of shops. Nor does it have to be done in one go, leaving jars and jars to be stashed away to last till next year. All you need is a little time. You must have all the equipment and the jars scrupulously clean. You must measure liquids and fruit properly … and you must enjoy the whole process!

Sugar Any modern white sugar makes good jam. Brown sugar will change the taste and may create scum. Caster sugar will drop to the bottom of the pan and perhaps burn if you don’t mix it enough. Preserving sugar is good but not always available and is expensive. It’s best to warm your sugar in the oven with the jars. This keeps the fruit at right temperature and keeps the boiling time to a minimum, giving the best coloured jam. Fruit Most fruits and some vegetables (marrow) will make jam but some are more worthwhile than others. Fruit should be just ripe and in good condition. Dried fruit such as apricot makes delicious conserve, and rhubarb and ginger is traditional. Frozen fruit, your own or brought in, is convenient if you fancy raspberry jam in January. Or you can look out for it in the supermarket. Strawberry is the favourite but is the most difficult to get a good set. Apple makes the best jelly along with red current and is the basis of herb jellies such as mint jelly to eat with lamb. KONECT

Leave to go cold. Label, perhaps using coloured pens or paper labels. You can also use metal lids but they need to have been scalded in boiling water.
Let the fruit defrost in the pan you intend to cook in, perhaps over night. Put a couple of plates in the fridge. Warm the sugar and the clean jars. Bring the fruit gently to the boil. Add the warmed sugar and mix together till the sugar dissolves. Re-boil and continue on a high heat for about 8-10 minutes. Keep mixing the sides to the middle. Draw off the heat and test for setting by dribbling a little “jam” on a cold plate. If, after a minute , the edge of the sample puckers up and keeps its shape it is setting. This may need two or three tests. The cold plate speeds the process. When you have a set take off the heat. Fill the warm jars with a jug, taking care to avoid spills; the jam is hot and could burn you.

Currie Kirk Mission and Outreach committee are organising a Winter Market, to be held in Gibson Craig Hall, Lanark Road West, Currie on Sat 21st Nov, 6 – 9pm.
Tickets will be £5 which includes a glass of wine and mince pie/shortbread. An ideal evening for some early Christmas shopping or just a chance to socialise with a glass of wine and friends! All the profits will go to the Foodbank run by Holy Trinity Church, Wester Hailes.
