Editor’s Message We’re looking forward to the various annual spring events locally and optimistically hoping the weather will be good, so our writer Emma Merchant has been looking into the history of these local traditions, with a quick look ahead to what’s on this year - see the feature on pages 8 and 9. There are lots of offers from local food places this month. They all have something different to offer so do check all of their adverts and see what is available – with any luck eating al fresco will become a possibility this month. The Kinleith Arms in Currie are offering the crossword competition prize of a meal for two plus a bottle of house wine, so try the crossword on page 48 to enter. Congratulations to Carole Douglas of Currie who won the crossword competition in the April issue. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory, please keep sending us your feedback or leave a note on our facebook page - we love to hear from readers!

The Merry Month of May
I
Some events are recent additions to village life. Some are longer lived. Take The Balerno Children’s Gala. Historically, galas were first the preserve of mining communities, when families celebrated the miners’ annual May holiday day. Then, as now, the gala was a time to dress up, to process and to play music. These days many Scottish towns and villages have annual gala days. The Balerno Children’s Gala traces its own beginnings to 1957. Currently in its fifty-sixth year, it has grown over time into an actionpacked fortnight of fun that includes numerous sports events, a fun run, fancy dress, talent, and pet shows/ competitions. Denise Scougall is current Gala Committee President. “The first Balerno & Currie Gala, as it was then called, was the brainchild of a generous-spirited local man, Willie Shanks. He simply wanted to do something for his village, and especially for the children. We remember him in the Willie Shanks Showcase gala event, although his influence is everywhere. He would notice some changes. Originally the gala lasted one week, but it has since grown arms and legs! Many activities are much-loved traditions, but we add new events every year to keep the Gala fresh.”
It’s been a long hard winter. We’ve spent months huddled indoors, appearing outside only as walking duvets. But the spring sunshine has finally arrived. Now is the time to get outside and enjoy all that is happening in our local villages this month. There is something for everyone. Saturday 4th May Currie Riding of the Marches The Weavers pub, Currie, 10am. A colourful piece of living history. Local riders gather on horseback to trace Currie’s boundaries, reinstating them to the pride and delight of local residents and onlookers. Monday 6th May Family Fun Day Currie Rugby Club playing field, Balerno, 11:30am to 2pm. St Mungo’s Church offers families time for fun together. Bouncy castles, face-painting, quizzes, treasure hunts, sports challenges and mountains of home baking keep everyone happy. Saturday 25th May Balerno Children’s Gala Parade Balerno Main Street, 1pm. The Balerno ‘royal family’, serenaded by traditional Scottish pipe band and cheering onlookers, lead a caravan of decorated floats and costumed waving children through the village. Saturday 1st June Balerno Gala Day Currie Rugby Club playing field, Balerno, 12:30pm to 4pm. A Spectacular Gala Day that includes stalls, fairground attractions, a ‘royal visit’ and top class performers. All these events (and many other year-round local activities) are kept alive due to the enthusiasm and commitment of local people. The various volunteer groups that make them happen support not only our valuable heritage, but also help to bind together our living communities.

One long-standing tradition is the crowning of the new Gala Queen. Queens of May have long been celebrated, not only in Scotland, but throughout the United Kingdom. The May Queen, usually crowned with flowers and wearing a white gown, has for centuries been a symbol of Summer. Her roots may well be originally Roman, since times when early pre Christian communities in Britain celebrated the Festival of the Roman goddess Flora, (goddess of flowers) in May.
Photographs from Balerno Gala’s early days suggest our local Gala Queens used to be girls in their teens. These days the queen is chosen, from among the P7 girls of Dean Park Primary School, by her fellow pupils. Leoni Buchanan, is this year’s Gala Queen. Please remember to mention The Konect Directory when contacting advertisers
“It was January, and Mum and I were just about to go out shopping, when the letter arrived. My mum quickly read it, and I could tell something was up, because she started crying! Everyone in the family came running to find out what was wrong! I was so happy and grateful when I actually heard what the letter said!” Leoni is joined by other members of the ‘royal family’, pupils also chosen from Dean Park Primary School. This year they are; Isaac Mackie – Champion, Christopher Laidlaw – Page, Alex Gilhooley – Herald, Ladies in Waiting, Erin Kennedy and Hannah Jardine, and Flower Girls, Rebecca Watson and Zöe Ward. “The Gala is all about making people happy,” says Denise. “The committee members work hard all year to make the Gala a success. And it really is worth it to see the amazing smiles on so many children’s faces.” Currie Riding of The Marches, practiced locally for a little over twenty five years, is a reminder of a time when riders traced the boundaries of a town to preserve the rights of their burgh. The visible presence of a large number of riders was perhaps a polite but firm reminder to neighbouring landlords not to encroach on their land. It is said that riders would take particular note of boundary stones
along the way, checking that they hadn’t been secretly moved by their neighbours in a sneaky attempt to gain land. Common Ridings take place each year in many local burghs, but are most numerous in the Borders. Like galas, they may be linked with important historic events. In Selkirk, for example, locals remember Fletcher, the single survivor of eighty Selkirk men who followed James the IV into battle (and to their deaths) at Flodden in 1513. Legend tells that Fletcher staggered bravely home bearing a captured English flag. Currie riders proudly raise their own standard during their Riding. A friendly affair, it attracts visitors and riders not only from Currie, but also from other surrounding towns, such as Biggar and Musselburgh. The circuit includes a canter across the Pentland Hills and a meeting at the boundary with neighbouring Penicuik. But instead of engaging in a boundary fight, Currie and Penicuik folk greet each other warmly and share a drink! Do put these events in your diary and enjoy what’s on offer this month. Perhaps you will even become one of those special local people who help to make it all happen. (Balerno Gala are looking for new members. Find out more at their cheese and wine AGM at The Grey Horse Inn on Wednesday 19th June at 7pm.)

Technology
Head for the Hills
T
Technology isn't just something you use at home - it can be handy when you're out and about too, even if your idea of out and about means going far off the beaten track. One of the most useful kinds of outdoor technology is GPS, the satellite system that can work out where we are and help us find where we want to go. There are all kinds of dedicated GPS receivers, ranging from cheaper devices such as Garmin's £100 eTrex 10 to more expensive navigators such as Magellan's Explorist 710, which currently costs around £350. You don't necessarily need to invest in stand-alone GPS kit, however, especially now that smartphones and tablets can run very accurate mapping apps - although if you're taking a phone or tablet into the wilds, onto a boat or anywhere else nature can destroy it, it's a very good idea to invest in some protection. You can spend ridiculous sums on all-weather protection, but cases such as Griffin's Survivor (around £25 for phones, £29 for tablets) - something Griffin admits is "ridiculously over-engineered" - wraps your device in military-spec protection for a very reasonable price. It isn't pretty, but it's tough - and that's what really matters here. Technology has even made its way into the humble torch, which these days boasts LED illumination and innovative designs. Nite Ize's BugLit LED (around £13) has low, high and strobe modes, is visible from a mile away and has rubber feet that you can twist to attach to almost anything, while headmounted LED lights range in price from around £35 to well over £100. Petzl's Nao Headtorch (£135) is a bit over the top for the odd walk in the woods, but for serious running and other sports its sensor ensures a uniform level of brightness irrespective of how light or dark conditions become.
16
The gadgets that make the great outdoors even greater The most famous outdoors gadget is probably the Swiss Army Knife with its array of tools, but these days you're more likely to carry a Leatherman or one of its many imitators. With prices ranging from around £30 to £100 for originals and considerably less for clones, the range offers all-in-one devices with tools such as pliers, knives, saws, bottle and can openers, wire cutters, screwdrivers and even scissors. If you're planning to be outside for a long time, you'll need to eat - and gadgets can help you with that too. Jetboil's Zip Stove (£75) is a gas stove given a hightech twist: its heat exchanger means it can boil half a litre in just over two minutes, and its neoprene jacket keeps things warmer for longer. Meanwhile the BioLite CampStove (£150) takes the humble campfire into the 21st century: as it burns twigs, bark or pinecones it generates electricity, which powers a fan, which fans the flames for better heat efficiency and less smoke - and there's enough power left over to recharge your lights, phone or MP3 player. If you need to recharge gadgets but don't fancy lugging a stove around, no matter how portable, you might be better off with a monkey - and by monkey we mean a Powermonkey, such as the Powermonkey Discovery. Charge it before you go, and when your phone or other digital device runs out of puff the Powermonkey can recharge it twice if it's an iPhone and three to four times if it's a standard mobile phone. Expect to pay around £45.

Thought for the Month
L
Life is different for this generation of grandparents from previous ones. We are still working, we are fitter, more active and are still having a lot of fun with our lives. We may not live very close to our children and grandchildren, and sometimes the way they live their lives is not what we had hoped. But we have learned a lot from bringing up our own children, and from life itself, so we have much to offer to our children as parents and to our grandchildren, emotionally, practically and spiritually. Family life can hard and challenging at times these days, but grandparents can make all the difference in the difficult times, as well as the easy ones. We can think out how to be a ‘grand’ parent in situations of divorce, stepfamilies, at a distance, or when the parents can’t look after their children for a time. We can also think out how to be ‘grand’ when asked to babysit too often,
18
Putting the ‘grand’ back into grandparenting By Pat Banfill
how to intervene without interfering, and how to be generous without spoiling. We can instil into our grandchildren a high sense of their significance, not just to us but in the world as well, and a sense of hope for the future. We can show them the importance of forgiveness and getting along with people, how to live a life of integrity ourselves, make wise decisions and be compassionate and loving towards them and to others. But above all we can show them unconditional love, whilst not necessarily agreeing with their choices as they get older. In many ways, our role as grandparents can be seen as ‘a bridge over troubled water’, a bridge between the past and the future, a bridge that spans the troubled water of the present with calm and confidence. Money Matters
Pension choices at retirement

inherit the plan or the full cash amount, tax free, if the plan has had no tax free cash or income taken from it.
THE CHOICE YOU MAKE AT retirement can mean the difference of tens of thousands of pounds over your lifetime and the lives of your inheritors. It is simply the biggest financial decision you will probably make for the rest of your life, but you only have one chance to get it right. Here are the three main options to consider: Annuities: you simply hand over your pension savings and the insurance company will give you an income for life. You can purchase death benefits for the plan, but if you don’t then the income will die when you die. Never buy an annuity without getting an Open Market Option Quote. Draw Down Plan: this option lets you stay invested in the market but also draw a pension from the plan. The amount you can draw is decided by the government but will roughly equal the size of an annuity you could purchase. Should you die, your spouse will

3rd Way Guaranteed Product: this is a hybrid of an annuity and a draw down plan. In short, it lets you stay invested in the market but also gives a level of guarantee, so that no matter how your investment performs you will be given a minimum income and / or capital value for life. Should you die, your spouse has all the benefits of a drawdown plan. This is a very complicated subject and you should always consult a suitably qualified expert before choosing. Green Fingers Gardening in May By Anne Pinkerton
T
This has been the slowest, coldest spring we can remember so when it does warm up everything will come on in a rush. There may be an advantage to fruit in that we’ll avoid the devastating frost damage of last year because the flowers are not set yet. General garden work • Paint shading on the green house • Clip evergreen hedges • Re-pot root-bound house plants • Keep the pond clear of blanket weed, barley straw helps
Visit • All work and no play makes for dull gardeners, and gardens. Look at The Yellow Book - the listing of all National Garden Scheme open gardens in Scotland - and visit a local garden. See ngs.org.uk. May is the start of the season and there are gardens of all sizes and styles to inspire and reinforce your own growing practice.
Flowers • Plant out dahlias when the fear of frost is past • Divide and replant crowded spring bulbs; this encourages them to bulk up • Tie-in climbing plants such as honeysuckle and roses • Take soft wood cuttings of hydrangeas • Check roses for black spot and pick off affected leaves. • Sow bi-annuals and half hardy annuals. Fruit • Plant last year’s potted strawberry runners in their new site. • Straw up the established strawberry bed. • Protect stone fruit from late frost with fleece on cold nights. • Check blackcurrants for Big Bub disease and destroy/burn infected plants. Vegetables • By now you would have expected to thin vegetable seeds sown in April, but the seeds may be only just germinating or even been killed by the conditions. Weed and keep watered. • Catch up on sowing peas, runner beans, broad beans. • Continue sowing for follow-on crops of salad, carrots, beetroot. • Start earthing up potatoes. • Harden off and transplant leeks, cabbage, other brassicas. • Plant under cloches or other protection tomatoes, aubergines, peppers. Harvest • Continue with rhubarb; asparagus by the end of May • Some cut -and -come -again salads will be ready

Charity Concert
An evening of musical entertainment in Kirknewton
R
as they no doubt were to the original listeners. The Kirknewton concert will include some of this Scottish music as well as pieces by other composers across the border in Tudor courts, Spain and Italy.
Rising to the fund-raising challenge set by the Kirknewton Community Development Trust, Kirknewton resident Julie Greer has arranged to bring a performance of the Edinburgh University Renaissance Singers (EURS) to Kirknewton in May. Julie has been a member of the EURS since the 1984, and is excited to be bringing the choir to her local community. This particular concert is a chance to hear the authentic music of the Scottish Reformation on your doorstep. As the name suggests, the EURS perform music (voices only) dating from around 1400 to 1600 and they regularly perform reconstructions of major ceremonial occasions. Their director, Dr Noel O’Regan, researches music from this period in ancient libraries (such as the Vatican Library) and translates it for modern musicians, as musical notation has changed. Some of the music the EURS performs, therefore, is the first time it has been heard for over 500 years. There are many prominent Italian and Spanish composers from the time, although very little Scottish Renaissance music survives - with the arrival of the Reformation in Scotland almost all renaissance music from Catholic Scotland was burned. However, Reformation composers in Scotland, working under the new constraints, produced some truly stunning choral works, with harmonies as moving to our modern ears
You don’t need to purchase a ticket, but there will be a collection after the performance. Tea/coffee and home baking will be served in the interval. All donations will go to the “I Love Kirknewton” campaign for community projects, in particular the new Resource Centre. If you need transport to the church, please contact Tony Foster on 01506 883988. Visit the choir website at http://eurs.eusa.ed.ac.uk/
Concert by the Edinburgh University Renaissance Singers Thursday 16th May, 7.30pm in Kirknewton Church. Tea/coffee and home baking.

Recipe & Food Notes
H
Herbs are the green parts of plants which add flavour and interest to dishes. You can grow enough for one household’s cooking in one large planter. The key herbs in British cooking (in my opinion) are parsley, chives, thyme, sage and rosemary. Planted together in a large, well-drained pot of good compost and set in a sunny spot by the door they will always be ready to use when you need them. The only other herb I really like is mint. Don't plant it with other plants though - it grows on creeping roots which strangle everything in its path and needs to be contained by something like a bottomless bucket sunk in the earth. Until the industrial revolution the growing and use of herbs was the province of the mistress of the household. Herb gardens were a source of pride and often a place of tranquillity and relaxation. Herbs were used in medicines, cosmetics, cleaning and in food and brewing. Visit Annet House at Linlithgow where the gardens of a typical merchant’s house of the 17th century are still cultivated. There has been a considerable revival in the interest in growing herbs; from the pot of ready grown parsley brought with the weekly food shop to beautifully designed gardens, some very grand, for example, the Millennium Garden at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. The Botanics in Edinburgh have test gardens where herbs and vegetables are grown to inspire the visitor or would –be gardener. It's not possible for everyone to grow their own herbs but the plants from the supermarket will live on a well-lit windowsill for a couple of weeks, if you remember to water them. 50
Herbs

Dried herbs, bought in small quantities, are good too. They are more intense in flavour than fresh leaves so use with caution. Some herbs such as rosemary, sage, bay-leaves or dill can over-power a dish. Parsley (petroselinum crispum) is often used just as a decoration, and it does look attractive but this under-sells a valuable plant which adds a really good flavour needed in stews, sauces for fish and vegetables, egg dishes and salads. Parsley butter was the height of sophistication in the 1960s on grilled steaks, and jolly good it tastes. Curly parsley has been the traditional plant used in our cooking but now it is easy to find flat leaved parsley which has a slightly stronger flavour and is traditional in Turkish, Moroccan and other further eastern cuisines.
Sage (salvia officinalis) is traditional with goose and pork and is found in Lincolnshire sausages and in sage and onion stuffing. There is no shame in admitting to enjoying Paxo stuffing. It is quick and easy to make up and can be used in small quantities if you are cooking for yourself. A stuffing patty sets off a grilled pork chop with a little apple and mashed potato and peas for a quick evening meal. Rosemary (rosmarinus offcinalis) is perfect with grilled lamb and good with walnut in bread such as focaccia. You can p52

meat or vegetables and it imparts a gentle flavour to the food, it has a strong heavy sent and it is better when used subtly. Chives (allium schoenoprasum) The fresh green hollow leaves are a pleasure in sour cream on baked potatoes or on warm drop scones, they mix into soft cheese and can then be used as a spread or try them in herb butter melting on newly grilled meat or vegetable kebabs. Sliced and quickly boiled courgettes become an interesting side dish if lots of chopped chives and a little butter are added just after draining and then served immediately. Chives are good in mixed leaf salad and if added as a garnish to butternut squash or other smooth soups, look attractive and bring out the taste of the dish. Chive omelette makes a quick lunch with a salad and a chunk of crusty bread and they are vital to potato salad. The pale mauve starry flowers are beautiful and are edible. Add them to summer salads or break them up and scatter them on fish, which you are going to bake in the oven in foil with a little white wine or lemon juice. Mint (menthe piperita) is a very British herb. It is not till you travel as far as Turkey that a cuisine seems to understand how good mint can be in both sweet and savoury food and drinks. There are many different mints;- spear, eau-de-cologne, pepper, pineapple and apple are just a few. The plant dies back in winter and so when it shoots again in May it is doubly welcome as a marker of early summer. Mint and peas is a union made in food heaven, with mint and new potatoes a close second. Mint is splendid with asparagus, and mashed into Roquefort cheese and stuffed into a boned out leg of lamb it is amazing. Chopped finely and added to blackcurrants for a pie or to be served stewed and eaten cold with clotted cream, mint adds an extra 52

depth to the flavour and takes away the tartness, reducing the need for so much sugar. A little mint is also good with strawberries and it looks pretty. Pimms or other summer punches would look undressed without a sprig of mint, and then there is mint tea which only requires a mug, a sprig or two of the mint you prefer, some boiling water and a little sugar or honey if your taste is for sweet drinks. Thyme (thymus vulgaris) adds richness to many meats. It is known to aid digestion of meat, and in conjunction with lemon is delicious with chicken, rabbit and veal. It is a vital herb in a bouquet garni. This is a little bunch of herbs often required in casserole, stew and game recipes. Tie together, between two bay leaves, a good sprig of thyme, some parsley on its stalks and about a three inch piece of celery. This is then easy to fish out before the dish is served. After slow cooking the herbs have given up their flavour to the dish and no longer taste of much. If the bouquet is for a beef daube you can add a strip of orange or lemon peel. Thyme needs a good sunny summer to reach its full flavour and it prefers a neutral or limey soil. As with mint there are many different varieties of thyme with varying tastes (lemon or ginger) and many different habits and leaf colours. It is a tough plant when established and a pleasure to have in the garden.

Baberton History Project … get involved A small group has started to research the history of the Baberton Estate, including Baberton Mains, built by George Wimpey between 1972 and 1977. We are researching its pre-housing-estate history as well as the story of its post-1970 community. There are half a dozen of us just now, with different interests and skills, but we will find it difficult in the coming months to cover all the work that we think will be needed. So, we are hoping to find people who would be interested in joining the group to help research the historical documents and/or the oral history and who may have some time to spare. Enthusiasm and interest in the subject are the main requirements. Training and support are available but if you can bring some expertise (computer skills, history research, transcription, writing, publicity etc) that would also be most welcome too. We will be contacting people in the summer so that they can give us their stories, but for now we hope some of you might like to join our working group. If you would like to know more or just would like a chat about it – please contact Helen Ogg, ogghelen@gmail.com or phone 442 2135 as soon as possible.
