Message from the Editor Hello neighbours We’ve all had to pull our belts in over the past year or so, but with the inevitable Christmas spend upon us now the least we can do is make every penny count locally and support local businesses as much as possible when Christmas shopping. Calders Soldiers 1914 - 1918 any men from the Calders area joined the “Hearts Battalion”, 16th Royal Scots, during the First World

cost. They reached the village of Contalmaison and held a position known as the Scots Redoubt until relieved later that day.

In 1914 the majority of the Hearts ﬁrst team, then sitting at the top of the league and favourites to win the Scottish Cup, received a white feather in the post. “Professionals”, including footballers, were excluded from enlistment for military service in the First World War, and the feather in the post intimated that they were cowards for not volunteering to ﬁght in the trenches.

Many from the Calders joined the Battalion. One of them was Lance Corporal Jimmy Boyd. Jimmy was born in Seaﬁeld and his family moved to Mossend on the outskirts of West Calder. He attended West Calder High School (then situated on Hartwood Road) and on leaving school he worked in the shale mining industry. He played football with a local team Mossend Burnvale, then joined the Hearts as an inside forward alongside his brother who was the Hearts Goalkeeper at the time. Also

The Hearts team, along with many supporters and players from other local and amateur teams, joined the 16th Battalion of the Royal Scots, formed by Colonel George McCrae. The Battalion was raised in record time and was one of the many “pals” battalions formed at the time. They became known as the Hearts Battalion or the Sporting Battalion, but the soldiers preferred to be known as McCrae’s Own. They quickly gained a reputation as one of the best battalions in the British Army and were deployed at the Somme in 1916. The ﬁrst day of the Battle of

When the Hearts team decided to volunteer, Jimmy and his brother had to choose who would stay at home to support the family and who would go off to war. Jimmy won - or lost, depending on how you look at it. He survived the first day of the battle at the Somme, but on the 3rd August he was wounded and carried to a field hospital for treatment. The hospital was hit by artillery fire and all inside killed. Jimmy was initially buried near the scene but later his body was moved although there is no record of where to and he is one of the many buried in an un-named grave. His family have his name engraved on the

Calders Soldiers 1914 - 1918 » headstone of the family plot at West Calder Cemetery. Pat Crossan was also wounded during the battle and his leg marked down for amputation. He pleaded with the doctor not to do so as he was a footballer and needed both legs to play for Hearts!. A German prisoner of war, a doctor, was asked to operate and saved his leg. Towards the end of the war, however, Pat was gassed and his lungs permanently damaged. He died as a result of his injuries after the war. Very few of those who signed up in 1914 survived the war and only one or two of the Hearts team kicked a ball in earnest again. Mossend Burnvale, the team Jimmy Boyd played with before joining Hearts, all joined McCrae’s Own at the start of the war following Jimmy’s example. Only one of them returned home. At West Calder High School a stone lion recovered from the original West Calder High School has been dedicated as a memorial to Jimmy Boyd and others from the school who fought and died in the War. West Calder High School is keen to collate information about other ex-pupils who perhaps fought alongside Jimmy Boyd and Pat Crossan. Scottish War Blinded, Wilkieston

nyone who uses the A71 through Wilkieston will have noticed works at the Scottish War Blinded site at Linburn recently. I caught up with centre manager Rosie McLaughlin to learn about what’s happening there and the work the charity is currently involved in. Scottish War Blinded has undergone some changes to extend its services to a larger number of people. Its membership covers all servicemen and women who have significant sight loss and whilst membership was until recently only available for those registered blind or partially sighted, they are now able to help people prior to their registration. So any forces or ex-forces personnel with a significant sight impairment are eligible for help. The new building at Linburn is due to open at the end of November. It provides a lovely environment for learning independent living skills, training in various skills and meeting other people in the same situation. It is a focal point for information and practical assistance. With capacity for up to 35 people per day on a drop-in basis, it has a gym, therapy room, art room, workshop, IT suite and training kitchen as well as a relaxing social and TV area. There will be a gardening area and greenhouse. Workshops and craft training have always been a central aspect of the support provided to veterans at Linburn, and the new centre builds strongly on this whilst updating its services. Use of the facilities is free to members and transport is provided for those within commuting distance; for those further afield, residential training courses with accommodation onsite are offered. Designed by Page \ Park Architects (Glasgow), the shape of the building was inspired by a wood carving of a Chinese celestial dragon on display in the existing showroom (a gift from the Hong Kong Golf Club who donated generously to the charity after one of their members was a beneficiary), It is designed to be easy to navigate through and is flooded with natural light which can be controlled through the use of vertical blinds, as well as plenty of task-specific lighting. Light was a key consideration in the design. Beyond the landscaped grounds surrounding the building, the mature parkland of the old Linburn estate provides plenty of peaceful walking trails. Centre manager Rosie McLaughlin has a background working with visual and hearing impairment and is passionate about the issues surrounding this type of disability. She says, “The whole ethos of the Centre is to keep people as active as possible. Most of our members are physically very fit and able and with a

little help are able to realise their full potential and live active and fulfilling lives.” Outreach Scottish War Blinded has introduced an outreach programme to provide advice and assistance to members elsewhere in Scotland. Outreach workers visit members in their homes to provide advice on issues such as benefits applications, acquiring equipment, access to local services and activities in the community – for example if a member wants to attend a local lunch club but needs someone to go with them for the first few visits, Scottish War Blinded can help. Community Links In its heyday Scottish War Blinded at Linburn had close links with the local community. Rosie is keen to keep up this community involvement, particularly with local schools. There are opportunities for work experience placements at the Centre in a range of areas including caring, administration and working on independent living training for people with visual impairment. In addition, staff at the Centre would be happy to help out with schools doing project work on visual impairment and finally, projects relating to WW2 - they still have a small number of WW2 veterans resident at the Centre. It might be that we actually get a white Christmas if last year’s winter weather is anything to go by, but in the lead up to Christmas what gets us all in a ‘fankle’ is wondering what to buy and where to buy it. In these days of ethical buying and reduced carbon footprint, we need to take a long hard look at our buying habits when it comes to Christmas shopping. OK, it’s easy to click a button and order online. You can even have the present gift-wrapped and delivered direct to the recipient. We are time poor and it’s a hassle free option, but it simply isn’t what Christmas shopping should be about. I have wonderful memories of festive shopping trips with my mum and aunt, looking for just the right gift for each family member and friend, stopping for coffee and cake along the way, then all the wrapping and delivering of the presents. It would be great to take the extra step of making sure the shopping trip is local, thereby cutting down the carbon footprint, supporting the local economy and ﬁnding something truly unique. Supporting the independent trader is a big step towards a greener Christmas. Candles are popular at any time of year but especially at Christmas. Yankee Candles are American but Europe’s largest Yankee Candle store ‘Yankee at Home’ is based at The Centre, Livingston and run by West Calder people, so you are supporting local traders by buying your candles there. Another classic present is of course jewellery. Ametista, also in the Centre, is a small independent jewellery store specialising in sterling silver and gemstone pieces. And a new bike is a classic Christmas gift - you could decide that 2011 will be the year you start cycling more instead of taking the car, in which case head along to Pedal Power in West Calder where you’ll get the best advice on bikes for the whole family. You can also take a rest for coffee and cakes or lunch which adds to the whole experience. A fantastic range of local jewellery and soap makers and other artisans usually have stalls offering unique items that you just can’t buy at the big chain stores. At the craft fair held in Balerno High School you can pick up hand made items such as a range of hand painted pottery from Kirknewton-based pottery painting studio Potter Around. You might feel inspired enough to head to the studio itself and paint your own personalised gift. or the serious walker, a boardwalk might be considered a cop out. However, the main point of a boardwalk is to preserve the land beneath while allowing you to walk in the environment and enjoy it. The other reason boardwalks are so great is that they are an added incentive to persuade children to go for a walk. Mine change their shrill cries of ‘Oh no, not a walk’ to ‘Great, let’s go’ when we mention it might be a boardwalk.

carpet of sphagnum moss, heather, cotton grass, crowberry, hair moss and even the insect eating round leaved sundew – which has been known to eat even dragonﬂies. That little nugget of information could certainly intrigue a child and keep their interest in the outdoors!

Our usual haunt is the boardwalk at Red Moss near Balerno, but through a friend who works at Scottish Natural Heritage I have discovered a new place for us to visit as a family namely Blawhorn Moss, near Blackridge. The wooden pathways now winding around this ancient habitat not only preserve the habitat, they keep the visitor safe too – if you stray off them you might just find yourself waist-deep in layers of soil and moss that have been vegetating for 1,200 years! For the budding ornithologist, many different birds visit the moss at different times of year including the red grouse, snipe, curlew, redshank, teal, skylark, hen harrier and short eared owl. Butterflies and dragonflies are also regularly seen at the reserve as are frogs and toads.

As recently as 2008 Blawhorn - one of the largest and best examples of lowland raised peat bogs in the Lothians – was re-declarated as a National Nature Reserve (NNR). The 110 hectare Blawhorn Moss is owned by Scottish Natural Heritage and they are keen for people to visit this internationally recognised reserve. Bog habitat is still under threat nationally - almost 94% of the UK’s lowland raised bog habitat has been lost since the end of the 19th century. Large areas of these deep peat deposits were dug out for fuel, drained for farming or planted for forestry. The bog, which has over twelve thousand years of moss growth, is a survivor of a huge area of peat which once covered the entire area of central Scotland. Flora is many and varied with a

With all the talk of bog, you might wonder why it is such a great place for a walk. In the past bogs were simply considered only suitable for cutting the peat or for draining, but that has all changed. A walk across the bog affords a real close encounter with nature as well as some fabulous views. Bogs also act as a carbon sink, trapping carbon dioxide and helping combat global warming. Blawhorn is one of the best examples in central Scotland. Perhaps the best time to visit the bog in terms of wildlife is from April to July but you will always ﬁnd something of interest at any time of year and autumn often brings perfect walking weather. In fact at this time of year, the leaves of bog cotton and deergrass turn the bog a rich russet colour. This is only a short walk, but if you fancy a longer walk, you can start with Blawhorn and the reserve then links into the local path network. Problems with your roots? A new column on family history, from local resident Maureen McIntryre

enealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. Searching through family papers and the birth, marriage and death records will enable most researchers to build a reasonable family tree, but there are many obstacles in the way to even this basic search. Overcoming these obstacles comes with experience so those starting out on this journey should not be put off at the first hurdle. I have just finished 3 years of study at the University of Strathclyde in Genealogy, so if you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches please email me and I will endeavour to help. Please email me at rootsandbranches@hotmail.co.uk. Each month I hope to highlight some of my own personal family tree stories as examples of obstacles and how I overcame them - or not! Maureen McIntyre Family heirlooms - A help or a hindrance? My mother gave me a set of antique postcards which had been posted from Australia in 1935 and sent to her grandfather who lived in Laurieston near Falkirk. She had been told that these had been sent, by her great uncle John Richmond who she had always believed had emigrated to Australia before the First World War. This seemed plausible as John’s brother James had been killed while serving for the Australian Infantry Force in 1916 and there was no trace of a death record for John in Scotland. The postcards were signed from John and Kate and were postmarked Victoria, Australia. Exhaustive searches of the online archives in Australia

proved fruitless but another piece to the puzzle came in the form of a photograph unearthed by an aunt John Richmond in a sailor’s uniform. The photograph was undated and had been taken in Portobello. Frustratingly there is no surviving record of John having served in the Royal Navy but the name on the uniform cap HMS Zedwhale is a vessel which is documented in First World War archives. A breakthrough reakthrough came when I managed to track down the family headstone in Camelon Cemetery in Falkirk, which remembered many members of the family including John. John had actually died in South Shields, England in 1930, so he could not have been the John who posted the cards from Australia in 1935. John’s employment was listed as Ships Donkey Man (a sailor’s connection) and there was no mention of a wife. I still have questions unanswered in this family mystery and the postcards and photograph have neither helped nor hindered my search. Who are John and Kate? Did John serve in the Royal Navy or did he simply have his photograph taken wearing a photographers prop uniform on a day trip to Portobello beach? The search for the answer to these questions continues - a family tree will never stop growing.

Local Village Food Feast Thank you to all those who came to the Local Food Feast on Sunday 19th September 2010. We were overwhelmed by the turnout. We got through well over 25lbs of pork burgers and pork sausages, supplied by Whitmuir Organics in West Linton and 25 lbs of venison burgers and venison sausages supplied by Beecraigs Country Park. A huge sack load of potato salad and green salad, supplied by the Cyrenians, disappeared within the ﬁrst hour and the selection of delicious Scottish cheeses suffered the same fate. Many of you commented on just how delicious the food was. It goes to show what high quality local foods are produced around us. Local resident Anne Pinkerton was kept busy with bread-making demonstrations. Of the 20 loaves Anne baked only a few crumbs remained and both children and adults had fun joining in and making more. A number of local people stopped by to chat to Anne about the joys and advantages of making their own bread. Maybe next year we can have a best loaf competition! Thank you to Anne Pinkerton for the breadmaking demonstrations. Several people have commented that the event was poorly organised. The Trust would like to apologise for this. It’s clear that we needed more help! Others have told us that they were disappointed that there weren’t stalls where they could buy local produce. We have taken on board suggestions for future events. We were absolutely amazed and delighted at the enthusiasm of the community for local food. If you can spare any time to help with future events or have any suggestions do get in touch (see contact details below). Thank you to Charles Welwood for letting us use Kirknewton Stables for the event. Many people commented on what a great venue it is. Finally thank you to everyone who helped organise the event and who helped out on the day.

Apple Day Thanks to everyone who came along to the apple day at Kirknewton Primary School on 9th October. Children enjoyed apple bobbing and everyone enjoyed the apple identiﬁcation quiz. We borrowed an apple press from Transition North Queensferry and had lot of fun pressing apples and making delicious fresh apple juice. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped out at the event. Local apples and vegetables are available from the Whole Shebag, the Cyrenians and Dicksons Farm Shop.

Vet’s Tip: Pet Health in Winter

ith the dark nights and the cold weather just around the corner, it can be difﬁcult to maintain your dog’s exercise levels. But this is just the time when they may be more prone to getting stiff because of the cold and damp weather. Regular exercise is a must for any pet’s quality of life so it is important to make time to get out for a walk. If you can’t manage a regular walk yourself, make sure you use a dogwalking service so that your pet doesn’t miss out on essential exercise. If you are taking your dog out for a walk in the dark after work, beware of the risks of walking in the dark, and wear pale/reﬂective clothing and collars to avoid accidents.

Frozen in Time by Ali Sparkes Frozen in Time is a sci-fi and fantasy novel by Ali Sparkes. It’s a really good book, mostly I think, because it doesn’t wander all around the place, chapters stop where they were meant to stop. It’s a really neat and exciting story! It’s about a brother and sister, Ben and Rachel, staying at their Uncle’s for the holidays because their parents are too busy. At about midday, when the TV is broken and the rain has finally stopped and the storm broken up, they run out through the garden and out into the woods beyond. Rachel trips over a silver wheel that was hidden underneath a rotting log. Digging excitedly, ignoring Ben’s protests (‘’Come on it’s nothing, leave it alone...’’), she soon uncovers a sort of steel tank, buried underground. They turn the silver wheel (anything but easy) which opens a hatch in the tank. Going down, they see it’s almost a house, well-stocked with canned food and some chairs. They go through into another room. In the middle of it, they see a boy and a girl, both in separate what looked like... containers. They look almost dead, as if something had tried to keep them from dying and had almost succeeded, but not quite. They are almost floating in the white boxes, in rather old-fashioned clothes, both with jet black hair.... Frozen in time for fifty years.... Freddy and Polly from 1956 come to live in 2009.

Time Riders by Alex Scarrow- Day of the Predator People who didn’t matter - souls that could die or live and make no difference.... they were the people – children - who were chosen to be the time riders, working for an agency no one knows about, no one dreams about! Their job is to prevent time travel destroying and changing history. Sal should have died in 2026 in a fire, Liam in 1912 on the Titanic and Maddy in 2010 on a plane. They are saved from their various fates by an old man , who they now know to be called Foster. They now all, except Foster, live in a time bubble, always living a Monday and a Tuesday in London 2001, always going back to Monday at Tuesday midnight. None of them know where Foster gets to or what he does. Highly sophisticated technology gives them ‘Bob’, an intelligent computer unit. Ask him (it) whatever you like, but not an opinion! Sal, Liam and Maddy work to stop any meddling with time travel - using time travel. But they’re perfectly trained by Foster and they know more then well what they’re doing and why. But Maddy has just made one mistake – Liam is away fixing something, and he needs a portal to bring him back to the time bubble. Maddy opens the time portal just when and where she shouldn’t have, and suddenly Liam is marooned 65 million years ago with the company of dinosaurs, another unit like Bob and the group of people he had been checking up on. The last time Liam was lost in the past, he had simply written a letter where Maddy and Sal would find it. But now he was in a dangerous world inhabited by monsters, with no means of contact whatsoever!
