ig plans are afoot in Pumpherston - to launch a new music festival in May, “Sing on the Bing.” I’ve been speaking to some of the organisers to see what it’s all about, see pages 8 – 10. Spring is in the air and you may be thinking about those home and garden improvement projects. Picking a reliable company can be tricky – of course checking through the pages of Konect is a great way to find local people! A couple of years ago West Lothian Council launched their own “Trusted Trader” scheme to help people find reputable local companies, you can read about the scheme on pages 26 – 29.

was extraordinary - going back 30 years or so there have been at least seven bands from Pumpherston. A lot of talent concentrated in one small village. Most of us were unfortunate not to get recording contracts but the enthusiasm did not falter. Easter in Panama were in discussion with Virgin, which was a brand new record label at that time. We didn’t go with them in the end, and the chance was lost.”

“The gig was a sell-out and a load of fun, and so many people were keen to do it again this year. “There aren’t any venues in Pumpherston though, so we looked into hiring a marquee and the idea for a festival grew from there.”

The driving motivation behind the new festival, though, is to provide a platform for up and coming local talent. As Joe says, “The next major Scottish talent may be right here locally and we want to give them a chance to get on stage, get some experience of performing and get noticed.” So the first two hours of hours of the festival are dedicated to showcasing new local artists. One of those already lined up is Patrick Queen who lives in Livingston and will be performing his own songs including his recently-composed ‘I love the Way the River Flows.’ “We’re really keen for young people with an interest in singing/songwriting to come forward and be part of the festival,” says Joe. Another new local talent is Gordon Robertson. His latest original song, “What’s Best for Me,” was written about making changes in your life that you know will make you happy despite other people telling you otherwise. Gordon creates songs with both an Acoustic Pop and Swing vibe - he’s hoping 2016 will be a breakout year and is delighted to be involved with the first Pumpherston music festival.

I’m talking to Livingston resident Joe Campbell of the Pumpherston band Easter in Panama and Bathgate resident Kevin McGinty of Dukla Slam, both originally from Pumpherston. “It

the event off the ground for this first year and it’s hoped that it will develop and grow in future years. Pumpherston Community Council are the main organising body and have successfully engaged with many groups in the village. Pumpherston Junior Football Club have donated all their park and facilities for the day; Currie Printers of Broxburn have kindly donated printing services; Kevin McGinty has provided all the art work. Karen Rogers of the Community Council says, “A host of wonderful people have offered to assist us on the day or have used their contacts to locate sponsorship opportunities. It’s great to see the village pull together to make a success of the event. A huge excitement is building we even have people coming home from the Channel Islands and London. However, the event is open to everyone near or far who love good original music and of course our emerging talent acts are from the wider community.” Tickets are £20 on the door (early bird tickets available for £10) and any profits from the day will be ploughed into a new venture in the village. Karen explains, “We’d like to start a music school for children and young adults in Pumpherston where they’d learn instruments, particularly instruments that are probably not ideal for the average home - drums and electric guitar for example. Singing coaches and recording studio time will be hired. We’d also like to encourage song writing and the arts too - music video production and album design. It’s an exciting

10

venture and there is an interest for the project as highlighted in a recent survey.” The stage will be a flatbed trailer donated by Scania. The marquee and professional sound and light equipment will be hired from sponsorship funds. Sponsorship from local businesses is welcomed as the more they can keep costs down the more funding will be available for the music school and arts classes for local young people. If you are interested in sponsoring the event please contact the organisers on the contact details below. While the music is the main focus of the festival, it’s about other arts too. There will be an exhibition of local artists and crafters, with the opportunity to purchase or arrange commissions. Local food vendors to provide tasty, quality food for the day that at a reasonable price. Sing on the Bing/Bingstock is all about celebrating and enjoying local talent, both old and new. Early bird tickets are now available for £10 and are available at Milk Hairdressing in Mid Calder, in the Cawburn Inn Pumpherston on Tuesday nights; or via the event’s facebook page Pumpherston Music Festival #SingOnTheBing. To be involved in the event in anyway – as a volunteer organiser, as an artist or as a sponsor, please get in touch: info@pumpherstoncc.org k or telephone 01506 532856

TECHNOLOGY

Gadgets for the indoor gardener You don’t need to get dirty to grow great things

1

Spring has spring and it’s gardening season. But not everybody has a garden or access to decent growing space - and even if you do have the space, the recent stormy weather has been enough to keep all but the most determined gardener indoors.

NASA-inspired combination of hydroponics and electronics to ensure that your plants get the right combination of water, oxygen and nutrients without you doing anything. It includes a LED lamp for maximum germination, and because it’s LED the running costs are microscopic. The creators suggest growing petunias, tomatoes, chillies, basil or thyme but it should be able to handle anything that isn’t too large.

Don’t despair, though: there are plenty of gadgets that enable you to grow great things indoors or when you have limited space for green things. There are even tools to design gardens that don’t exist.

If you’ve got green fingered children, the Chuppon self-watering animal planter (£9.99) should delight them: it’s a ceramic animal with a herb basket on its back and a straw that sips from any glass or mug. There are four animals and four herbs to choose from, although of course you can put your own herbs in instead.

If you’re also a keen cook, you’ll like the Indoor Allotment (£24.99, currently on pre-order at Firebox.com): it’s a miniature herb garden complete with picket fence and storage shed. It includes basil, coriander and oregano along with everything you need to get your herbs growing - and it’s small enough to fit in the corner of a windowsill. If you fancy something a little bit more ambitious, IKEA’s Socker miniature greenhouse is just £12 with an assembled size of 45cm wide, 22cm deep and 35cm high, which is more than enough for all kinds of plants. You can also keep the roof vents partly open to improve air circulation for plants that don’t like it too hot. While you’re in IKEA, it’s worth checking out their self-watering plant pots too. The Sötcitron and PS Fejö pots (from £6 to £16) are designed for those of us who don’t always remember to water our plants, and do a superb job for very little money. Fancy something a little more high-tech? The Click and Grow (€59.95 from clickandgrow.com) describes itself as a “smart garden” and uses a 16

Even the smartphone has made its presence felt in the world of gardening, and there are lots of apps and devices for indoor and outdoor gardening. One of the cleverest devices is the Parrot Flower Power, a wireless device that sits in your plant pot and monitors the plant’s health, sending alerts to your phone. It’s available for Apple and Android phones, measures sunlight, temperature, fertiliser and moisture, and it currently costs £42. That’s probably a bit steep if you’re growing cress, but if you’ve got something exotic or temperamental it could be a very wise investment indeed. There’s another type of digital gardening you can do, and that’s to create a virtual one in your computer - something you can do just for fun, or to plan what you’ll do to a real garden space. There are many garden planning apps to choose from, including My Garden (free from www.gardena.com/ uk) and Marshalls Garden Visualiser (free from www.marshalls.co.uk). Happy gardening!

SPOTLIGHT ON...

West Lothian Trusted Trader Scheme It’s all about word of mouth We all know someone who has suffered a disaster of a home improvements project as a result of using unqualified tradespeople. Or heard a horror-story of a tradesperson who has done a shoddy job then disappeared without a trace. The Trusted Trader Scheme was launched by West Lothian Council in 2013 to tackle these types of problems and to help consumers choose a trader with confidence. In reality it’s almost impossible to eliminate all risk of something going wrong but there are some basic criteria you can check before employing a business. Looking at established local companies is usually a good start. Membership of trade bodies is also a good thing to look out for as it generally means the company has been

26

subject to some kind of training and standards certification. Then there is the all-important word of mouth recommendation which many people rely on. But you don’t necessarily know anyone who has used a trader they can recommend, and that’s where the West Lothian Trusted Trader scheme comes in. The central element of the Trusted Trader scheme is customer testimonials. To become a Trusted Trader a business needs to collect at least five recommendations from customers who were happy with the work they did. These recommendations are proof that the trader is a genuine business who has done satisfactory work for other local people. And once they are a member of the scheme, customers can submit feedback about them to the Trusted Trader scheme at any point – and both the positive and the negative comments are published. The reviews are checked and uploaded to the Trusted Trader website by the West Lothian Council staff who administer the scheme. This reduces the risk of activity that some review systems suffer from - where competitors write bad reviews, or where businesses get their friends and family to all write glowing fake reviews.

For local businesses

Testimonial

If you are interested in becoming Trusted Trader and supporting the scheme, please contact the West Lothian Trusted Trader team on 01506 280000 or email tradingstandards@westlothian.gov.uk for more information and to request an application pack. Being a Trusted Trader helps give consumers confidence in you as a reputable business. There is an annual fee of £100 for non-vat registered companies and £200 for vatregistered companies. Your company details and reviews are maintained and published on the West Lothian Council Trusted Trader web pages. West Lothian Trading Standards will advise you on consumer protection legislation upon request, and publicise the scheme. M. McLaughlan of Armalock Locksmiths is a member. He says, “The customers I get have all been to the Trusted Trader Scheme web site and read my customers’ reviews which I have no input on so it is totally honest and all above board: what the individual reads is what my customers have written. I cannot fault this scheme and I certainly think more small businesses in West Lothian should embrace the opportunity to join the Trusted Trader Scheme.”

“1st Choice Living is extremely proud to have been the 1st company to have been accepted onto the West Lothian Trusted Traders scheme. It is a great forum which allows prospective buyers to make an informed choice based on actual feedback from previous customers regarding their completed projects.” Besides collecting customer testimonials, to join the scheme businesses submit an application form with various details about their business, such as qualifications, membership of trade associations, any relevant licences. All details are checked. It’s not essential to be a member of a trade association or to have any particular accreditations to be a Trusted Trader – but a business can’t fraudulently claim to have certifications they don’t have. They sign up to a code of practice agreeing to certain trading standards, including a commitment to honest and fair trading, providing customers with clear information regarding the contract and any warranties, honest advertising, and so on. Although predominantly aimed at trades, businesses from other sectors can join the scheme, in particular the automotive industry, legal services, counselling, cleaning and childcare. Sometimes, despite everyone’s best efforts things can go wrong. WALK

The Broxburn, Uphall & River Almond Circular By Ross Mackey, Walk Across Scotland

This month’s walk feature is a long walk contributed by Ross Mackey of Walk Across Scotland www. walkacrossscotland.co.uk. This is a fairly flat straightforward walk, with the ascent of Binny Craig (221m) the only hill climb of note. Starting at the Union Canal Bridge on Greendykes Road in Broxburn, it takes you west through Broxburn & Uphall Community Wood then north towards the ancient volcanic rock of Binny Craig, southwards along the old railway from Uphall to Almondell Country Park, east along the River Almond and the winding Union Canal back to Broxburn. Distance: 13.54 miles Duration: 6 hours Difficulty: Easy/Moderate STAGE 1: UNION CANAL TO BINNY CRAIG - 3.69 miles ------ Head to Greendykes Road in Broxburn (turns off the Main Street) and just after the road goes over the canal turn left into Industrial Estate road. Rather than follow the road round to the right, continue straight ahead along the footpath which heads towards the woods. The path opens out onto a housing estate. Continue on the road to the end of the row of houses on the right, where you will find a small cap between the garden wall and a burn which suddenly appears. Follow the path to the right around the back of the houses. This area is the Broxburn Community Wood and continues along the north side of Broxburn and Uphall. It will initially take you in a northerly direction, however be aware of other paths weaving through the wood. After approx. 200m, the path takes a sharp turn left and heads west, merging with a more well-defined path . After a further 150m the path reaches the farm road. Cross the road and continue westwards. This well maintained path, popular with dog walkers, takes you to the end of the Community Wood where the path meets the top of Loaninghill Road in Uphall. Stay on the grass, with the fields on your right and the road on your left. After around 100m, you will reach a small gap in a hedge onto the busy Ecclesmachan Road. Directly across the road is the entrance to the Uphall Community Wood. This is another well-made path and continues for approx. 38

Photos by Ross Mackey, www.WalkAcrossScotland.co.uk 1/2 mile on the north side of the neighbouring housing estate. The community wood path ends at a gate. Go through the gate and head along the pavement which stays close to the trees on your right. After approx. 50-100m, a small grassy area will appear on your right with a narrow trodden path. Follow this path for approx. 50m until it reaches the farm road. The rocky outcrop of Binny Craig will now be clearly visible. The surrounding landscape is predominantly farmland, except for this extinct, volcanic rocky outcrop sitting at 221m above sea level. Follow the farm track until it reaches a narrow burn, Here, follow the path round to the left, over the bridge and through the gate. At this point, the path heads north between two fields, heading towards Binny Craig. At the end of the fields, you will reach a house with a tarmac drive. Walk passed the house on your left and head straight up the hill along a rather rough and slightly overgrown, but wide path. After approx 40-50m, the path abruptly meets a country road. If you look to the left, a signpost for Binny Craig points the way. The summit of the hill is around a ten minute walk from here and is a fairly straightforward path, although care should be taken in wet conditions as the path can be slippery in places. There is no path to the summit of Binny Craig, however, the climb up the wide grassy slopes is not difficult to negotiate. You will find a picnic table here if you fancy a short break for your sandwiches and an Irn Bru. STAGE 2: BINNY CRAIG TO ALMONDELL COUNTRY PARK - 4.77 miles ------ Unfortunately, for this walk, there is no circular route around Binny Craig, so it is a case of turning back and heading back down the KONECT

farm track to Uphall. Where, in stage 1, you moved onto the farm track from the narrows trodden path, continue down the farm track towards the town. This will take you into an area of large, stone built detached houses. Continue on to the road where the track ends and follow round to the left. The take the first right which will take you onto the main street of Uphall and Broxburn. Continue east along the main street towards the town for approx. 200m. At the bus stop, take the path on your right. Just after crossing the bridge, take the next path on your left. This continues adjacent to the burn (on your left) until you reach a wider path moving north to south. Follow the sign for Uphall Station. This feels like more of a road than a path, however, it only lasts for around 200m before turning off the right. Do not follow the road - continue in a straight southerly direction through the trees, eventually crossing the footbridge over the busy A89. After 0.9 miles, the path reaches Uphall Station and goes through a tunnel under the railway. Care must be taken not to take the wrong path here as you could end up in the housing state. Once through the tunnel, keep left, taking the path on your left, signposted for East Calder. After a short distance, the path forks and it’s not obvious which direction to go. For this walk, take the right hand path. The left path follows the Edinburgh to Glasgow railway line to the Roman Camps village close to Broxburn. The path continues southerly for around 2-3 miles before reaching Almondell Country Park. At one point, the path goes under the Drumshoreland Road. Take care not to take the exiting path onto the road itself. The entire stretch from Uphall to Almondell can be enjoyed by pram and wheelchair users, although it does get a bit muddier and unkempt after Pumpherston Golf Course, which can be seen on your right. This stage ends when the path moves onto the huge viaduct which crosses the River Almond. From the bridge, there are some spectacular views of the Almond Valley.

From the Uphall path, head down the steps on the right just before the viaduct. Once at the bottom, follow the sign for the Visitor Centre. At the next bridge, cross over onto the right bank of the river. This opens out onto a large grassy area where we stopped for lunch. Just further down, another bridge allows you to do the same again. We decided to stay on the right of the river along a rough path which meandered through the trees, up the hill and onto the path which comes down from East Calder. If you prefer a flatter path, sticking to the left side of the river is probably best. The path which we took eventually heads downhill towards another bridge, heading across to the picnic, BBQ area and visitor centre on the other side. This will also take you towards the north car park, which is closest to Broxburn. For this walk, however, take the path on your right rather than crossing the bridge. This maintains the easterly direction with the river on your left. This path can get muddy in parts and is perhaps not used as often as other paths in the area. After following this for around a mile, the imposing Union Canal viaduct comes into view. Follow the path which takes you through the trees and uphill and onto the canal tow path above. STAGE 4: UNION CANAL TO BROXBURN - 2.86 miles ------ This is the most straightforward stage as it is simply a case of following the canal from the aqueduct for approx. 2.5 miles in a westerly direction towards Broxburn until reaching the end of the route at the Greendykes Road Bridge. As the canal runs through the town, there are a number of opportunities to leave and re-enter the towpath, depending on whether you would like to go on a detour of the town or to perhaps where the car is parked.

STAGE 3: RIVER ALMOND TO UNION CANAL - 2.22 miles ------ This stage follows the River Almond east through the Country Park, continuing until reaching the huge aqueduct carrying the Union Canal. KONECT

Creating the Perfect Bathroom or Wet Room by ecko

When you think of your favourite room in your home, chances are the bathroom isn’t the first one that springs to mind. Many people will focus their attention on their living room or bedroom when trying to create a relaxing setting, however creating the perfect bathroom or wetroom can give you a place of sanctuary in your home – somewhere you can escape from the rest of the family for an hour or so. These ideas from Ekco will have your bathroom rivalling a luxury hotel bathroom or spa in no time. Showpiece shower: The perfect bathroom must have the perfect shower. While a shower can be quick and convenient, modern shower systems have progressed considerably from simply having an on/off switch and temperature control. The Dornbrach Sensory Sky range for example, is designed to stimulate the senses with a massage jet and the ability to create fog and mist. Add to this a soothing rainbow effect and relaxing fragrances, you have a shower experience to rival any top spa. Beautiful baths: Whilst you may choose the quickness of a shower before work, having a bath in the evening is the perfect way to destress after a long day at the office. Much like showers, bath design has progressed hugely in the last few years giving you a choice from

standard baths to more extravagant and luxuriant models guaranteed to transform your soak in the tub. Whirlpool baths not only help relax you thoroughly, the massage jets offer many health benefits such as increasing circulation and reducing stress levels. Sleek sinks: Modern sinks come in various designs from scalloped shells to large granite bowls and can be as much a focal point as your bath. Always make sure you get a sink large enough to cope with your needs especially if you decide to cut back on your daily shower or bath to save household water and energy. Underfloor heating: The Romans had the right idea. There’s nothing worse than a cold floor as you stumble into the bathroom in mid-winter. Whilst underfloor heating can’t take all the pain of early mornings away, it will ensure your feet are kept warm as you try to wake yourself up for the day ahead. Inconspicuously placed under your bathroom floor tiles, it actually helps heat up your entire bathroom or wet room. You can save between 15-40% on your heating bill as you can use your underfloor heating as the main source of heat in your bathroom and it can be particularly beneficial to those with allergies as it reduces moisture, therefore limiting dust mites. You can rest in the knowledge that underfloor heating benefits both you and the environment as it can reduce your carbon dioxide emissions. You certainly won’t regret it on those cold Scottish mornings..

The Currie Beer and Curry Festival,

Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June 2016

bigger and better for 2016 “We want people to come away from the festival saying ‘I wasn’t expecting that!’ ” says Tim Dew, one of the members of CBDRT (Currie, Balerno and District Round Table) who organise The Currie Beer and Curry Festival each year. The festival, which takes place in Currie, enters its fifth year this June. I met with Currie residents Tim and Christine Owen, chairperson of the CBDRT and also one of the festival organisers, to find out about the event. The idea and motivation for the beer festival came primarily from Tim. “I used to be a brewer, and wanted a beer festival so people could enjoy beer locally,” he says. Over the course of the past four years it has evolved into a much broader community event. “It’s become more of a community party with a lot more besides the beer,” explains Christine. “There are women on the organising committee as well as men, so it’s not your typical beer festival. There are other drinks on offer such as wine, including prosecco, and cider for people who want to come and enjoy the party but are not necessarily keen on beer. There is a fantastic atmosphere at the event, everyone has a really good time.” As much care goes into the selection of the other drinks as for the beer itself. The curry side of 46

the festival is taken care of by a pop-up Indian restaurant called “Ganesh” which exclusively appears at the festival each year. This year Ganesh will be operating as a takeaway for attendees to the festival. They’ve thought about it all - you can have your takeaway curry from the local festival and still watch the football! And there’s more, with live entertainment on each of the two nights. This year’s band is Bobby Miller (http://www. cranachanband.com/) and the band for the first night has yet to be announced. Professional light and sound systems are provided by Black Light (www.black-light.com). A huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes to make this into a professionally-run event that is a lot of fun. The core team of fifteen volunteers take care of marketing, IT for the ticketing system, artistic input, catering, entertainment, venue preparation, overall project management. And, of course, the relationship with the breweries. The beer itself is very important and the organisers task themselves with sampling a lot of beers to decide which ones to purchase! “We tend to purchase beers from smaller breweries. The criteria, broadly speaking, is that they are Scottish and interesting,” says Tim, “the types of beers you can’t normally get in a pub.” In previous years, for example, they’ve had beer from Black Isle Brewery, Highlander, Alchemy and Loch Lomond to name a few. They are served straight from the cask, “as the brewer intended them to be tasted, not through a sparkler” says Tim. I’m not familiar with the “to sparkle or not to sparkle” debate but it’s a topic that Tim as a former brewer is passionate about. KONECT

CBDRT (Currie, Balerno and District Round Table) is independent from the national Round Table organisation. The local members felt that the national organisation had less relevance to what they wanted to achieve locally. For a start, it was still male members only. Individual tables can become independent, so five years ago they took advantage of this, opened the doors to women and removed the upper age limit. Christine came on board as the first female member and is now chairperson. Besides the Beer and Curr y Festival, they organise the annual fireworks display in Currie and Santa’s Sleigh. “We have a ver y simple ethos: to give something back to the community, while having fun and building friendships.” For more information see http://www.cbdrt.com/

Based on feedback from previous years, this time they are offering 1/3 pint glasses as well as 1 pint glasses to allow people to taste a wider variety of beers. They are hoping to have in excess of 50 different beers to choose from and hopefully Tim’s favourite brewery (Tempest) will be making an appearance again. This year, the venue is the Currie Community Centre which has a capacity of 750 people per night. In previous years it has been in Currie’s Gibson Craig Hall which has a capacity of about 300, so they are ambitiously pushing the boat out this year. The venue is pretty much a blank canvas and will be transformed over the course of the week leading up to the festival into separate spaces for the restaurant, entertainment and beer tasting. The committee welcomes volunteers to help with this task. Final question – why did they launch this

festival? “We had the capacity in the diary and it seemed like a fun thing to do. It’s to raise money for charity, cement the community together, and it’s about the beer.” All profits go back into CBDRT for charitable use within the community, and they tend to fund one-off “projects” rather than ongoing support of any particular group, for example a sports wheelchair for a local boy last year, the sensory garden at Currie Primary and Balerno’s “Young at Heart” project. The festival is open to the wider area, not just Currie and Balerno. Their message to Konect readers is: “We’re expanding this year, bring a group of friends.” Tickets for the 2016 festival will be on sale from about the end of March and can be purchased from www.cbdrt.com. Search Facebook for “The Currie Beer and Curry Festival” to be kept abreast of all the latest developments.

Recipe & Food Notes bY Anne Pinkerton

“Cookery for Every Household”

Recently, walking about Edinburgh’s West End, I was given a leaflet about famous people who had lived there. From a cook’s point of view the most interesting person of the area was Florence B Jack of Athol Crescent. She really was the Scottish Mrs Beaton and perhaps the Athol Crescent Cookery School’s greatest teacher. (The school became the core of Queen Margaret’s University). She was extremely practical in her ideas about food, cooking and the skills needed to run a household on a budget; things we very much need today. I was inspired to buy her book and to my delight found it on Amazon from a charity bookseller. “Cookery for Every Household” was published in May 1914. In the preface she explains, “As an active teacher, I have found that even the best books frequently assume in readers a knowledge which they do not in fact possess...This book is not merely a recipe book...many trifling but necessary details are included.” She ends saying, “As attractively prepared food is so important to the health of everyone, and as it is easy to rest upon one’s achievements and fall into a groove, I strongly urge all who are charged with the cooking for a household to try new dishes, so as to introduce variety into the daily bill of fare.” The style of language is a little stilted but in all else she is 100% correct. There are parts of the book we don’t need to know about today; (napkin folding, how to use a hanging meat safe...) but the food uses a wide range of fruit and vegetables and is practical to cook at home. There were some topics missing - no recipes for salmon but ten ways to serve cucumber hot! The cooked puddings are delicious. Chestnut and custard pudding caught my eye. She explains how to stuff olives with pimento, sardine or lemon and how to make Rowan or Mountain Ash jelly. Thankfully all are to be found on

supermarket shelves today. She even tells how to make Chapel Window cake. It is Battenberg cake but with 3 colours of sponge cake sandwiched together with apricot jam and surrounded in marzipan. Hers cost 1d per slice, mine more like 45p! Near the end is a chapter on herbs and spices. “Success in cookery depends to a large extent upon the proper use of seasonings, flavourings and spices.” With such good teaching available, how did food at home gain to such a poor reputation? The answer, I think, is the marketing of food multinationals who want us to think we can’t produce good, interesting food for ourselves. We can. It can be a pleasure to share these skills and involve children so they too will be able to enjoy sharing and preparing food. Chicken Cardinal 1 chicken jointed; or 8 pieces of thighs or drumsticks. Some stock (from a cube today) 250g button mushrooms 1/2pt tomato sauce (from a jar today) 12 cherry tomatoes Salt black pepper Method Brown the chicken in an oven proof casserole dish. Add the sauce and stock to cover the meat. Cover and cook gently till tender, approx.1 hour. Fry the tomatoes but do not burst them. Sautee the mushrooms in a little butter. Take the chicken from the casserole and put in another dish with the tomatoes and mushrooms. Keep warm. Boil the chicken sauce till thick and glossy, then pour over the rest of the ingredients and serve with rice, boiled potatoes and a green salad.

Parents in West Lothian

HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWEN UGLY TUBERS DESPITE TH IDS ABSENCE OF PERIODIC AIR-RA When was the last time you bought an amusingly shaped carrot? A potato whose knobbles and lumps bordered on the risqué? If you shop at supermarket, probably not recently – you’re unlikely to encounter a radish roughly shaped like ‘The Thinker’ in such a regulated environment. That is, until now. I recently bought a ‘Wonky Veg’ box from Asda. They’ve been created in answer to uproar about recently publicised supermarket food waste, and they aim to sell less-than-perfect legumes in a box for a knock-down price. Verdict: a) they weren’t that ‘wonky’ and b) they tasted perfect. But wait - why buy someone else’s wonky veg when it is perfectly possible to grow your own aesthetically unappealing (yet delicious) food in your own garden? In recent years we have tried our hand at growing various fruits and vegetables, with the emphasis on things that can be picked and eaten with little prep in between – strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers etc. I want it to be obvious to my kids that food doesn’t form magically inside hermetically sealed plastic packaging, but it grew little by little, using the sun and the soil, until it was ready to eat. Last year, Quinton’s participation in the gardening tasks was limited to looking cute in wellies

These sacred duties will now be performed by his wee sister Penelope and this year, my horticultural hopes for Quinton are high. To get ideas and show him what might be possible – on a somewhat smaller scale – we took a trip to the Almond Valley Heritage Centre. At Almond Valley Heritage Centre there is loads for wee ones to do – outdoor trampolines, a huge covered sandpit, farm animals, tractor rides, train rides, soft play and more. However there is also lots of interest for older kids and adults; our main purpose – which we strayed from only long enough for a go on the cow-shaped bouncy castle – was to visit the Wartime Garden. The Wartime Garden is a step back in time to when veg came in all shapes and sizes, and when ordinary people were urged to remember that ‘Food is ammunition – don’t waste it!’. It was fun to explain to Quinn (and a snoozing Penny) that the way to get potatoes is to put an old potato in the ground then just wait. I could hear his little brain whirring with wonder at this ‘new-for-old’ potato phenomenon and forming plans to multiply other items – sweets, toys, playmates – by lugging them out the back door and covering them with mud. So home we went and donned our wellies to weed and top up the raised beds and barrel planters in preparation for planting in the coming weeks – a muddy and sweaty job made slightly more bearable for seeing Quinn’s proud and satisfied face after having dug all of the soil out of a planter I’d just filled. Dig for victory k indeed. KONECT

3rd Party Reporting Centre Capability Scotland Advice and Support Service West Lothian is now a 3rd Party Reporting Centre for disability hate crime. Hate crime against disabled people happens when the perpetrator of the offence is motivated by their prejudice towards disabled people. Other crimes, such as theft or assault, can also be aggravated by prejudice against the victim’s disability. In some cases victims or witnesses of hate crime do not feel comfortable reporting this direct to the police and may be more comfortable reporting it to someone they are familiar with. “3rd party reporting” is a way of reporting a crime or passing on information without talking to the police directly. Victims, witnesses, carers or others can speak privately to a member of our staff and they will pass your information onto the police. People have 3 options: • They can ask for their information to be fully investigated • They can leave their contact details, but ask for their information not to be investigated • They can leave no contact details, and ask for their information not to be investigated (this helps police monitor areas where hate crime may be rising). • They can also submit a report themselves online through Police Scotland’s website: http://www.scotland.police.uk/contactus/hate-crime-and-third-party-reporting/ Capability Scotland Advice and Support Service, Ability Centre, Carmondean Centre Road, Livingston EH54 8PT.
