The Lang and Winding Whang The Lanark Road Then and Now

ittle more than a dirt track for millenia, the route of the Lanark Road has seen plenty of action since prehistory, at times on the edge of momentus events. In 1666, the Scottish Royal Army marched from Slateford to Currie past some landmarks familiar today, en route to the Battle of Rullion Green in the Pentland Hills. From this massacre of Covenanter rebels, ﬂashing forwards nearly three hundred years to the most recent war, the same route became a tar-covered road and was a navigational aid for bombers, with bomb craters to prove it. Between these bookends of violence the Lanark Road has been a prosaic constant to local life. Change was slow. Until relatively recently the biggest worry tended to be the cost of keeping the road passable to foot traffic and pack animals. From the 1700s major roads in Scotland were constructed as ‘toll roads’, paid for by the local landowners. Contractors were appointed for construction, and ‘roadmen’ employed for maintenance including shifting horse manure into piles in little stone laybys (since it was ‘laid by’ i.e. put aside to deal with later). Constant upkeep was needed, and just as now, budgets were always a concern. From the mid-1700s the road had improved to the point where wheeled carts could operate instead of just pack horses thanks to a series of Turnpike Acts. A toll had to be paid to use the Lanark Road, the sum depending on the goods and the wagon loads involved. There were stiff penalties for any who tried to evade paying dues by slipping through fields or along side roads. To stop such evasions, additional toll bars known as check-bars were often erected on these side roads.

With improved surfaces came wagons carrying valuable freight, and so attacks by robbers increased. One particularly colourful local character was Captain Will Baillie, known as the “Gentleman Gypsy”, a Romany skilled at disguise who often adopted the persona of an educated, rich man. Baillie was famous for gestures of generosity and care towards the poor, while helping himself with style to the money of the better-off. Another kind of criminality was foiled by two stone breakers working on the Lang Whang, recorded as becoming suspicious of a load of straw driven by two other men. Following the drivers into Jenny’s Inn they overheard conversation which confirmed their suspicions – there were corpses in the wagon, stolen from Lanark Graveyard! The criminals had hoped to sell the corpses to the medical school in Edinburgh, but were captured by the excise man at Balerno. By 1790 the whole Lanark Road had been completed and for the next fifty years it was a busy through route connecting the capital with the cotton mills of New Lanark. In 1791 the minister of Currie parish wrote in glowing terms of the now-complete Lanark Road. He remarked that it was now possible for a single cart to carry 150 stones of hay in the charge of two horses and one man, where forty years earlier fifteen horses and seven men had been needed to transport the same load, as carts became bogged down in the mud if too heavily laden. The minster reported with approval that stage coaches now ran twice a week between Edinburgh and Lanark, but he was not universally impressed with better transport links: “Till within these few years the people of this parish were sober, industrious

and economical. The vices of the capital, however, are beginning to spread fast among them, and those baneful articles to the poor, tea and whisky, will soon produce that corruption of morals and debility of constitution which are already so severely felt in many parishes, and which must soon materially injure the real strength and population of Scotland.” The toll points continued until quite late in the 19th century, and the first edition Ordnance Survey maps (of the 1850s) show their position - often chains over the road, and a wee bothie or house for the Toll Keeper or his employee to watch out and operate the barrier. We don’t know what accommodation the toll keeper in Currie had for the first 90 years, but in 1840 the toll house (pictured) was built, and it stood until the 1960s at the junction of Riccarton Mains Road and Lanark Road West. Today the position of the well serving the house is marked on the footpath.

claims that lives were endangered by the panic induced in passing horses. The perception of danger was so widespread that steam coaches were withdrawn throughout the Edinburgh region, to the great relief of stagecoach, canal and train operators. As the railway network expanded through the 1840s there was a three-way fight between road, rail and canal transport. Many stage coach operators protested about the size of the toll dues they were forced to pay and were given reductions to allow them to stay in business. By 1847 one coach operator, James Waterston - who ran his service between his inn at Little Vantage and Edinburgh - was struggling. He reported that his coach had been off the road for six months due to the high cost of feeding his horses, but that if the road trustees would further cut his rates of toll per horse he might restart it. Despite this, all coach services ceased shortly after the opening of the Caledonian Railway in February 1848. The railway effectively sidelined the road west of Balerno, the 20 mile section we call the “Lang Whang” which runs across high bleak moorland to Carnwath. So as you’re driving along the Lanark Road in peak hour traffic spare a thought for our forbears. They contended with mud and potholes, footpads and occasionally soldiers, had the effort of a 1000 foot climb, and had to cajole their beasts all the way to distant Lanark! Geocaching locally

eocaching is an enjoyable social hobby, a gentle treasure hunt played around our countryside and villages with people you'll probably never meet. All you need is the modern equivalent to a compass, the GPS, which is often part of a mobile phone. Then you go to websites such as geocaching.com to find GPS locations and clues to help you find the “treasures”, or geocaches. Many of our local landmarks have geocaches nearby, as do obscure and unremarkable corners.

A cache consists of a sealed container or bag with a paper log book and some objects. The rules are simple: if you remove an object, replace it with something of equal or greater value, and write about your find in the log book and later, on the website. Objects can be anything so long as it is small, from a little plastic toy to an interesting shaped nut to a copper coin from Russia! Once you've

got into the swing of geocaching you might like to create one yourself - but beware of muggles, the idea is to do geocaching discreetly without non-geocachers even being aware of the game going on around them! Geocaching is a great way to learn about the local area and get out and about with the family. The fun is in finding the cache, and there are varying levels of difficulty. For example, searching for 'Balerno' on geocaching.com brings up the cache called “The Balerno Shoe Tree”. Balerno has had a shoe tree for some time (a story in itself – why is there a tree festooned with shoes in Balerno?) and that is the landmark chosen for a cache. Somewhere near GPS coordinates N 55° 52.267 W 003° 23.999 is a cache described as a 'tupperware box'. The clue is "In a shoeless tree", so with a little commonsense it is easy to guess what would be an accessible and effective hiding place. Similarly for the “Old Railway Bridge” cache, and the series of caches down the Water of Leith. There is also the Red Road Loop, Harmeny Wood and other lovely spots waiting to be discovered.

Mix, stir and paint at Honey Pot Ceramics

drop the orange colouring into the molten mixture and swirl it around, add the sweet orange scent and pour the scented mixture into the mould... I am at Honey Pot Ceramics, located in the Climbing Centre complex at Ratho, and am making soap. I have chosen fish shapes from the range of soap moulds and decided to make glittery goldfish mini-soaps with an orange scent to go with the colour. But there is any combination of shapes, colours and scents to choose from; it’s part of the fun of making cosmetics at Honey Pot Ceramics, the only venue in the Edinburgh area where you can make your own cosmetics from quality ingredients. Honey Pot owner Juliet Russell explains, “There are a lot of restrictions and regulations to meet in order to make cosmetics. We use only cosmetic-grade ingredients, and our recipes are approved by an independent chemist.” Besides soap, you can make lip balms, lip gloss, shower gel/bath bubbles, bath bombs and body glitter gel. For all of them you can add extra effects such as ﬂower petals, glitter or even plastic bugs! They are great fun to create, and they make excellent gifts – once finished, you add your own labels and they are gift-wrapped in cellophane ready to take away. For a special gift, you could move on to ceramic painting in the studio while your soap sets, and paint a soap holder or other ceramic item to go with it. There is a wide selection of ceramic items to paint and staff on hand to help with painting techniques, for both adults and children. Honey Pot is run by Juliet Russell who opened the business here at Ratho last October. She has always been a keen amateur potter and firmly believes that everybody can be creative – you just need to have a go. The strap line of the business is “be amazed at what you can do” and their customers prove this over and over again. Juliet ran Honey Pot as a mobile business in the Borders before settling back in the Edinburgh area and finally deciding to take the plunge, leaving her comfortable job as a Human Resources consultant and setting up her own business.

ost in a foreign city, not knowing where the nearest toilet is, you can’t remember how to ask for a ﬁrst class stamp. Who has the answers to these, and all other conceivable questions? Susan!

“

It’s my job to know what visitors need even before they do!” she says. “I try to put myself inside their shoes.” Susan is a fully qualified, Blue-Badgewearing Scottish Tourist Guide. A friend recognised she had the right gifts and suggested she study for the Scottish Tourist Guide Association qualification. Guides must be organised, practical and expert multi-taskers. Susan is also friendly and enthusiastic, and knows about - well, pretty much anything! Which is just as well, because visitors to Scotland ask about kilts, castles, caber tossing and… chimney pots? “Locals hardly notice Edinburgh’s chimney pot skyline any more but tourists often ask me about the chimneys,” Susan says. “I explain that every house used to have an open coal fire. I describe the smog they produced, and the damaged caused to many stone buildings. History comes alive when you can see it all around you. And I always refer to something people understand. If I talk about Mary Queen of Scots, I don’t give a list of dates, I describe her life and her trials, which people relate to and find interesting.” But you can’t always predict what people find interesting. Susan once took a group of German visitors to the Highlands. “Despite the amazing scenery, the biggest ‘oooh!’ of the day was when they spotted a Lidl Supermarket!” she 20

laughs. “The group were so excited, I always mention it now.” Guides also have to be passionate about Scotland, love travelling and be great communicators. Many speak more than one language. Susan ﬁnds her French and German very useful. “Once, when I was explaining the Glencoe Massacre, I just couldn’t remember the German for ‘Oath of Allegiance’,” she remembers. I think this means Susan’s German is considerably better than mine. “I always see visitors as individuals. And I never forget that they are on holiday. I want them to have the best time. A tutor told me, ‘People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.’ I think that is so true.” And then she launches into her favourite piece of Scottish tourist information. It concerns a small, round, and very shy animal, which hides deep in the heather of the Scottish Highlands. Adapted to mountain life, it grows one leg longer than the other, and runs in only one direction round the hills. Skill, patience and a large hessian bag are needed to capture it in time for the Burns Supper… Susan lives in Balerno. If you bump into her, stop and have a chat with her. She’s a mine of interesting information, and she always carries a supply of Europe stamps!

n important point to remember if you ﬁnd an animal requiring ﬁrst aid is to keep calm and use your common sense. Food and water should never be offered to an animal that requires first aid – it may worsen their condition and delay veterinary treatment. Medications (e.g. paracetamol and ibuprofen) should never be administered to an animal, as they can be toxic. A traffic accident is a common situation where first aid may be required. If the animal is collapsed and unable to move, it may have spinal damage or broken bones. The best way to move the animal is to slide it on to a large towel or blanket without moving any limbs or the head. The blanket can then be used as a stretcher to transport the animal in to and out of a car. It can be very useful to have a pet first aid kit in the home, and for dog owners, one in the car too. A Ramble in Roley’s Wood By Karen Murray

s I seem to work far more hours than I relax these days, trying to find time to fit in a walk can be difficult. However, I always feel so much better for making the effort so when there is a chance I take it. On the most recent of my several hockey drop off/pick ups for sporty daughter and pals, I thought I would make good use of the time in between by taking a walk. I could walk up and down the streets but for me at least a little interesting scenery makes for a much more pleasant experience. Hockey on this occasion was at Currie High School so I decided to try one of Balerno Footsteps 4 Fitness suggested walks in that area. Having dropped the girls, I left the car in the High School car park and then in order to complete a circuit, I walked to the suggested beginning for the walk at Currie Youth Club on Lanark Road. I headed up Dolphin Avenue to Lanark Road, turning left for

the youth club. From here you can take in fabulous views all the way to Fife on a clear day. The start of the walk is from the playing fields by the youth club following a linear downhill route through the green spaces running parallel to Dolphin Road, crossing Forth View Road and descending into “Roley’s Wood.” Including the community woodland in the walk makes for a far more interesting way to get some exercise and while away some time. Originally called the Curriehill Strip, this woodland area through which the path winds next to Currie High School had its name changed in 2001 to “Roley’s Wood” in honour of local ex-school teacher Roley Walton. A biology teacher, she spent a great deal of time instigating and leading various environmental projects to improve the area for public enjoyment. Along with campaigning by sixth year pupils and local residents, the improvement plans culminated in Forestry Commission funding to improve the woodland which was ravaged with Dutch Elm disease by building new paths, felling dead trees and planting new ones. The newly built Woodlands school for children with moderate learning difficulties also made some improvements to the wood which they use for many projects and there is direct access from the school to the wood which was officially reopened in all its glory in 2009. The wooded area contains a number of marked nature trails and decorative plaques as it is extensively used for environmental environmental

A Ramble in Roley’s Wood By Karen Murray

 education. There are plenty of bird watching opportunities if you are of that inclination and various invertebrates of interest in the stream that ﬂows through the wood. For me the stream just added to the peaceful ambience and I enjoyed my time out from work and housework! The path continues through the wood until you reach Currie Vale Drive. Cross over here and onto the path that leads down steps and through a little more woodland with great views over the fields, until you reach Curriehill Station. The station was built in 1874 next to the Water of Leith as part of the rapid expansion of the railways for transporting people and goods taking place at this time after the decline of the canals. At this point you can do a number of things - simply retrace your steps, walk over the rail bridge to the other side and turn right, making your way back through the urban landscape taking a right turn at each t-junction or even take a left turn at the railway station and wander the back roads and fields for a while working your way back eventually. I climbed the bridge to get some great views across the countryside, then retraced my steps as far as the lovely and leafy Roley’s Wood. From here I exited the wood into the car park of Currie High School just in time for pick-up. A perfect way of combining the wait while the girls played hockey with some much needed exercise and some de-stressing for the mind! I also got to discover parts of Currie I normally only drive past.

The full walk from the youth club and back is around two miles and will probably take around 45 minutes, but some of the terrain can be a little challenging as there are steep sections in the woodland so it is best to wear suitable footwear. It’s a walk you can do anytime, but if you want company do call Balerno Footsteps 4 Fitness (0131 477 7733) and find out when they are next organising walk no.6. The group does take a break for July but will be back in August with plenty more walks and you can always walk alone or find friends to join you.

Strawberries and Cream Cake Divide the mixture between the cake tins and gently level the surfaces. Bake the sponges in the preheated oven for 20-25 mins until risen, golden brown and springy to the touch.

INGREDIENTS 225g (8oz) unsalted butter, softened 225g (8oz) caster sugar 4 large eggs, beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 225g (8oz) self raising ﬂour, sifted 1-2 tbsp milk

Leave the cakes to cool in the tins for 5 mins then carefully turn them out onto a cooling rack. Peel off the lining paper and leave to cool completely. For the filling, hull and slice nearly all the strawberries (reserving a couple for decoration) and mix with the sieved jam. Sandwich the sponges together with the cream and strawberries. Dust the top thickly with icing sugar and decorate with the reserved strawberries.

FILLING 3 tbsp strawberry jam, sieved 175g (6oz) strawberries 300ml (1/2pt) double cream Icing sugar to dust Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas Mark 4. Grease and base line two 20cm (8in) round, loose-based cake tins. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon or electric whisk until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs and vanilla extract, adding a spoonful of the ﬂour if the mixture begins to curdle. Using a metal spoon gently fold in the rest of the ﬂour and enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.

Exchange experience at Balerno High School

am Mateo Louapre from Lorient in Brittany, France. For the last six months I have been living in Kirknewton and going to Balerno High School. I am on a language exchange, the name is ALLEF. My time in Balerno High School was really good . When I arrived in the school, I received a very good welcome from all the students. I wasn’t alone, some children came and spoke to me, I made new friends. The teachers are very nice and much more interesting than my teachers in France. What surprises me most is when the teachers are speaking in France nearly nobody listens, whereas here everybody listens. There is more respect between the staff and the students. Balerno High School is much bigger than my school in France. In France school starts at 8.00am and we finish at 5.00pm. It’s cool to finish earlier because we have more time with friends

climbing, running, jumping, swinging and so on. My English has improved a lot because when I arrived I couldn’t follow a conversation, I couldn’t say anything, I couldn’t read a book. I did English in school in France but was very rubbish at it. I really enjoyed Scotland.

I just think it’s a bit sad that when you meet your friends here you just say “hi” it’s a bit cold. In France you shake hands and in Germany you give them a hug. At home in France I do parkour and was very happy to discover a good parkour group in Edinburgh that I go to every Saturday afternoon. Parkour is a French sport which consists of going from one point to another point as fast as possible including ent House
