Message from the Editor

Whether your garden is large or small, this is the time of year to really enjoy it. A beautiful garden can mean a lot of work and we've got a column on what needs to be done in the garden this month – but also some pictures of local gardens, some of which are very low maintenance and equally enjoyable. The What's On section in this issue is a special summer holidays activties guide for families. All our regular columns are here – local walk, music review, property matters and the Stone Ring column. Congratulations to Sarah McCrossan who won the Tesco Bathgate competition last month. The competition is on again this month so you have another chance, the prize is a £20 voucher again plus a disposable bbq – for those hopefully warm evenings - see page 45. Remember if you're involved in a community group or not-for-profit club locally, details can be listed free of charge in the back of Konect! See page 45 for details. Have a great July!

Hammer throwing couple head to the Games Karen Murray catches up with local athletes heading to the Commonwealth Games

West Lothian’s very own hammer throwing couple Susan McKelvie and Andy Short have had their place at the Commonwealth Games in the bag since last year, but as the Opening Ceremony of the Games draws nearer their excitement is mounting. I spoke to the pair who live in Broxburn – grabbing them individually between work and training in a spare moment – to get a little insight into them, their sport and their hopes. Susan is a local girl who began her love of hammer throwing by joining the local athletics club at Craigswood Sports Centre in Livingston. “I started out running at the age of nine, but then moved through all the different disciplines until at 15 I got to the stone throwing ones.” However, at 5’3”, Susan was considered too short for shot put and discus and decided to give hammer throwing a go. She was a natural and went from strength to strength moving around the country to train and hone her discipline. She is also short for hammer throwing but has not let her stature hinder her, throwing a personal best of 65.03m. I asked if that would give her a medal at the Games and she said she’s hoping to throw 66m+ on the day. “At the last Games 64m got a silver so I am quietly confident that I can get a medal. I definitely want to be top five, a medal would be great and naturally if I could get the gold I would be over the moon,” laughs Susan. Regarding training, it is obviously difficult trying to juggle work and training but as a PE teacher with Falkirk Council, Susan does get the long holidays which helps and has understanding bosses who ensure she gets time to train. In fact Susan and Andy have a rather unusual training spot. While they use the more traditional venues of Craigswood Sports Centre – five minutes from their house – and Heriot Watt for weightlifting practice, they have a special place they go to get away from it all.

8 konect

A grassy space between Edinburgh Airport and Turnhouse Golf Course, it has no turning circle or safety nets and no way of marking the distance thrown, but no one bothers them and they have worked on their hammer throwing techniques here for several years. Andy Short, Susan’s partner and fellow hammer thrower, loves training on this bit of land. Unlike Susan who is representing Scotland at her first

Commonwealth Games, Andy has made two previous Games. From the Isle of Wight, Andy threw for England at the 2006 Games but after relocating to Scotland by the 2010 Delhi Games he was throwing for Scotland. He is the current British Champion with a personal best of just short of 73m. “It was a strange feeling throwing at the Delhi Games when Susan has just missed out on qualifying,” he told me, adding that he is over the moon that they are both representing Scotland together at the Home Games. “I just missed out on a medal at Delhi and am determined to get one this time around.”

Both Susan and Andy were coached for many years by the same coach –Alan Bertram MBE. He inspired the pair to be at the top of their game and it was a devastating blow to them when he passed away last year. “It was his wish that we be trained by Lorraine Shaw who is based in Gloucestershire,” explained Susan. That means pre-Commonwealth Games training down in England for the pair but they have understanding employers and are taking all the holiday time they can. Lorraine was coached by Bertram to Commonwealth gold at the Manchester Games in 2002 and she and Susan have been friends since childhood so she is perfect coach. As a PE teacher, Susan has been encouraged and supported by her pupils all the way and knows that many of them will be in the stands at Hampden watching her and Andy throw. Naturally there will be many friends and family from West Lothian in the crowd too. “Being in front of a home crowd will be amazing,” she states and Andy adds that he is sure the home crowd will give them an advantage.

“I can’t imagine what it is going to be like but I can’t wait to find out,” Susan added. Hammer throwing might be a solitary sport but as with any athletic discipline, there is always help behind the scenes. “We can’t get to where we are all alone,” states Susan, giving her thanks to Bruce Robb who helps the pair with weightlifting and Michael Smith of Personal Best, Armadale, who does their sports massage. On the day however, it will be just Susan and Andy out there in the throwing circle and we wish them all the best of luck. Bring home the medals guys!

How does hammer throwing work? Athletes throw a metal ball (16lb/7.26kg for men, 4kg for women) for distance that’s attached to a grip by a steel wire no longer than 1.22m while remaining inside a 7-ft (2.135m) diameter circle. In order for the throw to be measured the ball must land inside a marked 35-degree sector and the athlete must not leave the circle before it has landed. The thrower usually makes three or four spins before releasing the ball. Athletes will commonly throw four or six times per competition.

What is the history of hammer-throwing? Legend traces the concept of the Hammer Throw to approximately 2000BC and the Tailteann Games in Tara, Ireland, where the Celtic warrior Culchulainn gripped a chariot wheel by its axle, whirled it around his head and threw it a huge distance.

Summer Gardens By Anne Pinkerton

High summer; everything in the garden is in flower or growing fast. It's a time to sit back and enjoy it, and also the season to think ahead and plan, make ready for winter and keep the abundance looking good into autumn. As July is also holiday time it's difficult for a dedicated gardener to drag themselves away because there is a lot of work to be done now. The first task is to keep plants happy in what we hope will be warm, dry weather. Remember wind can do as much harm to container plants as lack of rain. As plants grow they may need support and it is surprising how things shoot up in a week or two if left to their own devices. Check before you go away. If you are going away see if you can find a friend to water the outdoor pots and containers, bribe them with the chance to pick the flowers or harvest any herbs and veg you have. Do the same for them in exchange. If you don't “dead-head and keep containers watered things will run to seed, wilt and even die.

Plant another container now to be interesting when your summer bedding will be over. Some vegetables are very good looking and a late salad crop will do well in a deep container. If you plant the rooted herb plants sold by the supermarket they do very well after hardening off and give you an instant late herb garden. Parsley, thyme, sage and other woody herbs will survive all winter; though coriander, chives and basil will die at the first frost. As the summer progresses gaps will appear in the flowerbeds. Cheat; buy in plants and fill the spaces to ensure a continuation of colour and interest. Garden centres always display their stock looking at its best so for instant effect bought in plants are a good solution. Spring flowering shrubs should be pruned and hedges given an extra trim to prevent snow damage and keep their shape through winter. Roses need to be dead-headed to give a second flowering and suckers should be rubbed out.

This is the best time of year to check the condition of all garden wood work and do the necessary tending, while it is dry, to preserve and maintain it. If you want to do major works get estimates and plan the work for the autumn before the frosts set in. Landscape gardeners like to

plan their winter work too. If this was not enough to keep you busy there is always the lawn! Regular cutting, but not too much if it is hot and dry, helps keep the whole garden looking neat. Now is the time for a summer feed especially if you forgot to feed the grass in the spring.

shortly afterwards and as a consequence maintains a cult following who have eagerly supported fairly constant re-union tours since the early nineties. Alexi Sayle followed with his own skewed r 'n' b of "Dr Martins Boots", leading to success with "'Ullo John, Got a New Motor?" which was re-released having failed to chart previously.

The Regal Music Club by James Kerr At time of writing the country has been shocked by the sudden death of Rik Mayall, so as kind of a sideways tribute this month we will having a look at the bands which appeared throughout the groundbreaking first series of "The Young Ones" in 1982, and comparing their fortunes. Each band appeared in situ in the living room set, or in a specially filmed video sequence in context of that weeks script rather than by way of official promotional video, making the appearances unique. The first band to appear was rhythm and blues band Nine Below Zero with "11+11" from well received third album "Third Degree. Despite teetering on the brink of mainstream pop success, the band split

The big guns came out for episodes three and four with Madness performing "House Of Fun" and Dexy's Midnight Runners playing "Jackie Wilson Says" whilst Kevin Rowland convincingly wore what looked like a torn sack. Finally, post punk funksters Rip Rig and Panic burnt through "You're My Kind Of Panic". Having recently shed original singer Neneh Cherry, this clip features her replacement Andrea Oliver. Hip TV exposure was either no help or a step too far, as the band split up for good in 1983. All these clips are widely available online, and are well worth seeking out. RIP RIK. Just for Jayden Fundraising appeal

Local lad Jayden, 6 years old, was diagosed in early May of this year with a rare type of cancerous brain tumour called an Ependymoma which affects the central nervous system. This brave wee man has already undergone a gruelling 10 hour operation to remove the tumour and had several bouts of exhausting physio. Initially the family were advised Jayden would require six weeks of radiotherapy in the UK. However it has since emerged that Jayden has a grade 3 tumour (the most aggressive form) and requires a specialised proton therapy - a treatment only available at present in America. The treatment will mean a 3 month stay for Jayden & Mum Angela in America. The full community is rallying around the family to help raise funds to assist in the mounting financial burdens associated with Jayden’s treatment and other living expenses, so the family can focus only on Jayden. There are lots of events happening to help raise funds, and the family are so grateful for the support of everyone.

Please visit the Just for Jayden fundraising page at https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/emWq8

Soft Tissue Injury Management by Michael Smith, Personal Best, Armadale

Soft tissue injuries are painful. It often seems difficult to move without aggravating it. Rehabilitating an injury is about understanding the injury and how you can build range of motion and strength without aggravating it. In the acute injury phase (when it’s swollen and undergoing the inflammation response) we need to rest. This is a key time to allow the body to heal. What happens if you rest long term? If we decide to completely rest an injury after the acute injury period then we start to lose muscle mass. The area gets weaker. We also lose flexibility around that area. It gets tight. So long term rest eventually leaves us with a weaker area with greater tension that is even more likely to become injured again. So how do we stop it? We need to get active about rehabilitation. We have to listen to our bodies. It’s not about pushing through pain.

It’s about understanding the pain and making progress without aggravating the injury or increasing pain. Step 1 - First we need to regain the range of motion within the soft tissues. Be realistic and aim to improve flexibility towards your abilities before becoming injured. Don’t force the stretch the goal is to relax and lengthen the muscle. Step 2 - When we have good range and flexibility we need to look at strengthening the area. Strength helps protect us from further injury. Start off with lighter/ controlled movements and progress as your body heals. Getting professional advice prior to beginning a rehabilitation programme is recommended. Speak to professional therapists on 07546356748. For more information contact Mikey on Michael@personalbestuk.com, tel 07546356748.

Local Walk

A Walk in the Park by Karen Murray

West Lothian is blessed with many green areas from wild life reserves to parks. I have strolled through many of these parks – some wilder than others. Polkemmet Country Park is one of the more organised parks incorporating a golf course, play park and of course the fabulous Owl Centre. I have only recently discovered however, that the art installation one can see from the M8 known as The Horn is also within the grounds of the park. This little nugget of information encouraged me to make a visit to the park and see if I could find the pathways to the Horn. There are several waymarked paths in the park and to help you find a route, and there are leaflets in the visitor centre. The route to the Horn is of course not the only one – you can wander all over the park on different paths, some muddier than others so you might need sturdy shoes. The park is really an idyllic little spot in the middle of the Central Belt with the River Almond tumbling

30 konect

over rocks, pine trees and shrubs along the bank, swathes of bluebells (at the time of my visit), birdsong abounding and a sense of tranquillity. It is also pretty quick to get to since the new exit of the M8 was built at Hartlands. Follow the brown signs from the junction. Once parked, if you are off to see the Horn you follow the blue route signs from the Visitor Centre. Pass in front of a bowling green, and just after it, leave the track you had been following to take a grass path down to the River Almond. Here, you go left, downstream. On reaching a wooden bridge, don't cross it but carry straight on, along a track by the river. Pass another bridge, next to a golf hole, and follow the track round to the left to reach the Horn. You can make the route a circular one but returning to the bridge by the golf hole, crossing over and taking the path to the right. On reaching a marker post, go left to follow the river to a bridge – which

The Horn Part of the M8 Art Project, devised by Art in Partnership in 1992 to radically transform the motorway through the creation of a series of major artworks, the 80 foot high ‘Horn’ by Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion transmits recorded music, poetry and prose. I have to say that I didn’t actually hear any music and I’m not sure how that music would enhance one’s travels along the M8 in a vehicle but it is nonetheless an interesting piece of art to take a walk to. you cross then head back along the track to the Visitor Centre. Follow the track taken at the start, back to the Visitor Centre. If you are with a bunch of kids, it is then probably time to head for the play park or the Owl Centre. However, there are plenty more paths to follow and if you have the time, it is well worth just meandering through the varied vegetation and wider green spaces enjoying the foliage and whatever flowers are in season as well as the fauna. You are sure to spot birds, squirrels and depending on the time of day you are walking, you may even spy deer.

Property Matters

Women Take Over the Garden Shed By Craig Turpie The once-humble garden shed is currently enjoying a revival – but in unexpected ways. Higher property values mean that space inevitably continues to attract a premium, and imaginative householders are cashing in on this by maximising every square inch of space. Property-related TV programmes have inspired people into considering what can be done with minimal space and the once male-dominated garden shed is no longer simply used for storing lawn mowers, tricycles, gardens chairs and creosote. Today’s sheds are as likely to be used by women as their sanctuary in a frantic world. The quiet privacy of the garden shed now hosts meditation rooms, yoga studios, gyms, aromatherapy and other holistic treatment rooms, music areas, offices, and hot-tub spas. Household spend in arts and craft materials has more than doubled in a decade which may account for the increase in the number of sheds also being

32 konect

used as painting, pottery and other craft studios. Higher property values have also put pressure on people to earn more, and as increasing numbers of homeowners look for other ways of supplementing their income, the garden shed provides an instant venue for all kinds of entrepreneurial activity. JC Bamford (JCB), James Dyson (vacuum cleaners) and Trevor Bayliss (wind-up radios) all started their empires in their garden shed! 1.5million garden sheds were sold last year and they are now regarded as a must-have accessory. With costs in the hundreds rather than thousands, a shed is a very affordable alternative to an extension, and planning permission and building regulation approval are seldom required! So when the time comes to think about selling – you might just like to venture into the garden and consider what can be done with your shed that could add as much as 5% to the value of your home!

If you are thinking about selling your property this year, please contact our office to arrange a free valuation and market appraisal. www.turpies.com • telephone: 01506 668448

Local Life

Fairtrade Bathgate Last month we celebrated John Newland's Day in Bathgate – John Newland was a landowner and slave owner in Jamaica in the mid to late 1700s. There, he accumulated a great fortune through dealing in sugar and slaves. He generously bequeathed money to be used in building a school in Bathgate (his native town) and this gift is celebrated each year by the Bathgate Procession on Newland's Day. Nowadays, many people would see this way of becoming rich as oppression, and have come to realise that we need fair trade in which everyone, from start to finish of the supply chain, is treated fairly. The purpose of fair trade is to put an end to exploitation and to give people a living wage. To help the poor, it is better to give them the dignity of selling what their hands have grown as crops or made as crafts rather than just dishing out money to them through charity or government aid. Bathgate has been a Fairtrade town since July 2011 after people who share the vision for Fairtrade began meeting together to try and raise awareness of the need for trade to be fair. West Lothian became a Fairtrade zone shortly after that. In order for Bathgate to become a Fairtrade town, West Lothian Council had to support the plan by using Fairtrade products in all council buildings and by passing a resolution supporting Fairtrade. A Fairtrade steering group was set up to promote Fairtrade in the community. It is this group which approaches local businesses and community groups to urge them to switch to Fairtrade products. This group would like to increase public demand by making known the reasons why Fairtrade is right and proper, just and fair. Once people understand that Fairtrade prices are reasonable and it is the cheap prices which are actually exploitation, we hope they will begin to choose more and more of the Fairtrade products making the world a better place.

(L-R) Gillian Reid, Secretary Bathgate Fairtrade Town Steering Group; Councillor Harry Cartmill; Anisia, Meru Herbs. Our supermarkets and corner shops sell Fairtrade but, if you could ask for more, the range of items could increase. Nurseries and schools teach their pupils about Fairtrade so children recognise the logo and understand the principles. Churches and businesses use tea and coffee. We recently hosted the visit of Anisia, a Fair Trade producer from Kenya (www.meruherbs.com), to the Partnership Centre. She spoke passionately about the difference Fairtrade makes to her community. In thanking JTS (Just Trading Scotland) for her time here she said “I am glad that we were able to work together as a team and market the products of MERU herbs. We deal with herbal teas, jams and sauces … Just Trading Scotland is trying to empower Meru Herbs by buying and marketing our products.” The Fairtrade premium and the fair wage paid generally allows communities to dig wells, build classrooms, have health and midwifery care, provide sanitation and opens up markets which would otherwise be unavailable. Want to be involved? - Email the secretary, Gillian Reid on mrs_g@btinternet.com or phone 01506 653366.

What can YOU do?

• Choose to buy Fairtrade products • Tell others about Fairtrade local businesses to stock/use some • Ask of the over 7,000 Fairtrade products available

• Join the steering group!

Spotlight on

Cleanleeness “Some people think that cleaning is easy. But if you're doing it properly, it's not easy - it's hard work!” Lee Raby runs Cleanleeness, the domestic cleaning company he set up around two years ago. It all started when his gran became sick and he started doing her cleaning for her because she could no longer manage. He got on well and soon started cleaning for other people in his and his family's network. In a very short time, he was enlisting the help of family members and close friends … and employing them in his new cleaning business! He pulled out of the photography course that he had started in order run his business full time, and has never looked back. “I think customers appreciate the fact that we're a family business, and they get the same cleaner each time so they can build up a relationship with them. The cleaner gets to know their particular wants and needs,” he explains. “We're not a faceless agency which sends out a random cleaner each time. Customers have the telephone number of their cleaner, so can contact them directly to make changes or requests.” All the Cleanleeness cleaners so far are from within Lee's circle of close friends and family – in other words, people he knows really well and knows they will do the work to the right standard and put in the extra effort for the sake of the family business. And as his business is growing rapidly from

38 konect

recommendations and referrals, they must be doing something right. Is he soon going to run out of family and friends to employ? “Yes, I think so!” he laughs. “And when that time comes I'll have to think very carefully about who else I take on.” When you contact Cleanleeness, Lee arranges an initial visit to see what you want done – and to show you the company's appropriate insurance and police check documentation (all staff are police-checked). They have a “set menu” of jobs they will do on a weekly or fortnightly basis, or you can give them a check-list of things you want done. Lee likes to talk through what you need and take note of any special requests. For example, he explains to me that one customer likes them to use a different brand of cleaning product as he is sensitive to the smell of the one they usually use; another customer has a special schedule arranged as he is “de-junking” his house room by room and getting a deep clean in each one. It's a big part of the job satisfaction for Lee to be able to deliver exactly the service required. The bulk of their work though is the regular weekly or fortnightly visits, including dusting all surfaces, cleaning the windows on rotation, vacuuming and mopping, cleaning the bathrooms, kitchen surfaces and cupboard fronts. “We work fast, efficiently … and thoroughly. We don't cut corners. We've had a situation where a customer questioned that we needed 2 hours to do a job that the previous cleaner had done in 1.5 hours – but it became clear very quickly that the previous cleaner had not actually been doing everything properly.”

Cleanleeness is your local domestic cleaning service.

We supply all products, are fully insured and we are not an agency. Cleanleenes provides you with the same vetted cleaner every week. We base the clean around your needs and requirments and will work with you to plan this.

For more information visit: www.cleanleeness.com or contact us at:

01506 300801

info@cleanleeness.com Since starting out Lee has got through various different brands of cleaning products, mops, vacuum cleaners, all to optimise the quality and efficiency of the work they do. (They have settled on Dyson cleaners as being the most effective for carpets). It's not just about turning up and rushing through the job, it's about getting it right in every detail. And the day doesn't end for Lee after the last cleaning job; all the cloths and dusters have to be washed and dried, vacuum cleaners emptied and checked over, paperwork and banking to do.

"It's not just about turning up and rushing through the job, it's about getting it right in every detail." “But I wouldn't have it any other way now,” he says. “I like things to be clean and I get a lot of satisfaction from a job well done.” Call Lee on 0131 564 0515, he will be delighted to help you out.

Testimonials from happy customers "My standard of cleanliness in the apartment is so much better now with Lee and his team doing the work and his attention to detail and his commitment to his role." "Lee was extremely professional and reliable. The business could accommodate various requests regarding both timings and cleaning tasks. There was a good work ethic and would happily recommend them to anyone in the future."
