Message from the Editor Hello neighbours Welcome to the April issue of the Konect Directory. Our usual editor Karen Murray is very busy as artist and business partner at Potter Around pottery painting studio so is relinquishing some of her editorial duties with Konect. However she will continue to write regularly for the magazine, and this month she has interviewed our local MP Alistair Darling, which you can read about on pages 8 – 9. She also continues to write the interesting local walk articles. The magazine has a distinctly spring-like feel to it this month, with local businesses offering everything we need for house, garden and family. With the Easter holidays coming up soon, you don’t need to go far for a choice of holiday activities to keep the children occupied: besides rambling around our local parks and woods, there is a range
of structured activities available, so turn to the what’s on listing on page 32 for some ideas. Congratulations to Mrs Katherine Angus of Baberton Mains who won the crossword prize last month. This month Spicy Village, Indian restaurant in Balerno, are offering a meal for two Konect readers, so try your luck with the crossword on page 30. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory.

A chat with our ‘darling’ MP By Karen Murray
W
hile he may be missing the cut and thrust of being in government, as well as the opportunity of being able to truly change things, spending time on the back benches has given former Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling more time to concentrate on the constituents of Edinburgh South West which of course include Konect’s readers. I met with Mr Darling in his constituency office in Edinburgh where we chatted about his life in politics and his thoughts on his constituency. A graduate of the University of Aberdeen where he studied law, Mr Darling had no intention of entering politics although he did head up the Student Union at the University and his great uncle was Sir William Darling, a former conservative MP for Edinburgh South. It was only when Robin Cook moved to serve as MP for Livingston in the mid 1980s that his former seat as MP for Edinburgh Central became free and Alistair Darling was persuaded to stand in the 1987 election. “ I assumed I would take a few weeks out to campaign and then be back practicing law. However I won the seat and have continued as the MP since, although after the creation of the Scottish Parliament that seat was abolished so since the 2005 election I have represented Edinburgh South West,” he explained.
a series of villages that gradually joined up and it is somewhat unusual for people still to live in the city centre.” Mr Darling is one such city centre dweller although he does still spend a lot of time in London. “When I’m in Edinburgh, I like to get out in the constituency as much as I can,” he says. “Organised events are great but something like a trip to Tesco can be as rewarding an experience as a big meeting. You are never off duty as an MP and often the best way of gauging opinion is by chatting to people in the supermarket. You can pick up what people are thinking by the way they speak to you,” he confides. However, Mr Darling does visit as many places in the constituency as he can, particularly the local schools. He spoke with the fifth and sixth years at Balerno High School recently and was impressed with the caliber of student. “They were more interested in global politics than what is happening at home but that is not really surprising and the subjects they raised were fascinating.” As we were talking schools, it was natural to discuss the swinging education cuts being delivered by Edinburgh Council that will affect all our youngsters. What were Mr Darling’s thoughts?
The latter area is a third the size of the former but very diverse, reaching roughly from the Caledonian Hotel to the top of the Pentland Hills and taking in half of Tolcross, Gorgie, Sighthill, half of Stenhouse, Currie and Balerno, Juniper Green, Colinton, Oxgangs and part of Polwarth.
“You only get one chance at school and the choice of subjects will affect your career and prospects. The key thing is to make sure our children have as many options as possible and the cuts are limiting these options,” he stated, going on to point out that the Scottish Government has more money now than it had before - double what it had 10 years ago - and yet education is being impinged upon.
“I represent an area that incorporates both city centre and farmland as well as everything in between. Edinburgh is really
He suggested that the Scottish Government has been shambolic in everything it’s tackled, from trams to education.
“Education is critical. My children were at school in the 1990s with one computer for the whole school. I want better for schools now, but things are going to be very difficult in this current economic climate.” Praising the amount of voluntary work that parents put in to help schools, Mr Darling stated that however laudable it is, people shouldn’t be put in such a position. Much of what they fundraise for should be provided by the authorities. Moving onto environmental matters, I asked Mr Darling his thoughts on the Green Hydro Scheme being run by the Balerno Village Trust and other communities, looking at the feasibility of a micro-hydro scheme utilising the Water of Leith.
constituents. However I do try to do some walking when I can. I don’t have time for the longer full day walks in the hills, but there is a nice shorter walk around Bonaly Reservoir with great views across central Scotland which I take when I can.”
“There is real potential here which should be encouraged,” he said. “I was at the February Farmer’s Market in Balerno where I saw real optimism that the project is now underway with a practical means of saving energy and as a way of educating people. It is an important project and I hope everyone can see it through.”
Asked if he is enjoying the back benches, he replied how pleasant it was to have a free weekend but that he would rather be in government ringing the changes, than in opposition reacting to them. “I can’t say I miss the trappings of office but it is frustrating to look at things and know you would do them differently.”
On a more prosaic note, we moved onto sporting facilities in the area, my personal bugbear being the awful state of the pitches at Malleny, where my boys play rugby and my daughter should play all manner of sports through Balerno High School. “Sport is something we ought to be encouraging but it is incredibly difficult to get the funding for. I have assisted in trying to get funding for all weather pitches at Malleny but so far to no avail.”
Mr Darling can’t predict the future any better than the rest of us, but he is unhappy over the proposed further reduction of seats at Westminster for Scotland at the next election, where Edinburgh is likely to lose at least one seat if not two. At the Scottish Parliament elections in May, Mr Darling will be hoping that his Scottish Labour Party will re-establish itself as the largest party in the Scottish Parliament and that of course he will once again be part of the ruling party come the next General Election.
However, one doesn’t need a pitch to exercise. The Pentland Hills are on the doorstep with plenty of great walking. I wondered if Mr Darling found the time to take the air. “Well, as I said you are never completely off duty as an MP, so heading outdoors inevitably means meeting
In the meantime he will continue to do his best to represent his constituents and if you have any burning issues to discuss with him, you can write, email or visit one of his surgeries, held on Fridays at the office in Rutland Square. Call 0131 476 2552 for details.
So Many Muscles to Frown! It’s true what they say that it does take more muscles to frown than it does to smile, but over time both sets of muscles lead to wrinkles in our skin. Some of these add character to our faces, but some can age our appearance significantly. For a number of years now we have been placing Botox injections to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles.
Sometimes patients are keen to have these after having some work done on their smile and wanting to compliment this with smoother lines around their face and sometimes it is quite independent to dental work. It needn’t be something extreme, but is usually a gentle softening of lines which can last around 4-6 months.
During April we will treat your frown lines for only £99. Hope that makes you smile.

Currie Rugby Football Club - 2nd Annual Duck Race 11th June 2011 After the success of the inaugural event last year, the Currie RFC Duck Race and Family Fun Day will be held this year on Saturday 11 June, so please get the date in your diary. The main event will see 500 plastic ducks racing on a 250m stretch of the Water of Leith beside Malleny Park. This year the event is being run in conjunction with Harmeny School who will be running their own race as part of the event and working with the rugby club to organise and run the day. We hope this can grow into a real community occasion. As well as the main race there will be a separate “Community” race where participants can bring their own decorated ducks to try out the course. It’s free to enter with a prize for the first one home. There will also be a family barbecue, tug of war, rugby training with the Currie first XV for our minis section players and appearances from Flinty and Clyde - the Edinburgh and Glasgow rugby mascots. Tickets for the main race, priced £2 per duck, will be on sale shortly from the rugby club, Harmeny School and, we hope, from other

Spicy Village, Balerno Mohammad, who owns and runs the Spicy village in Main Street Balerno, comes from a well-established line of Indian chefs. His father Mr. Gulzar was the first Indian chef in Glasgow, working at two restaurants - the Shish Mahal in Gibson Street and the Taj Mahal in Park Road. The Spicy Village curries are the finest Indian curries still made to the same traditional recipes as Mohammad’s father. They are also very different to the usual Edinburgh-style curries which are mainly Bangladeshi. For those of you not sure of the difference I recommend you give them a try and taste the difference. I have eaten at the Spicy Village a few times and each time I have really enjoyed the freshness of the flavour and the complexity of the spices. I recently ordered the South Indian garlic chilli lamb which was tender and as they said.... it was 20
spicy hot! The chicken Jaipuri had an intense fresh flavour and the Special Punjabi Korma is just like the popular creamy kormas but with an added blast of Punjabi spices which gives it a totally unique medium spicy flavour. The tandoori oven cooks nan breads, chicken and lamb tikka, tandoori chicken and shish kebabs are made to order fresh every day. If you haven’t been to try them yet I recommend you go and taste the difference, you won’t be disappointed. Try your chance of winning a meal for two at Spicy Village by entering the crossword competition this month on page 30. Jenny Thomson

A ramble at Red Moss By Karen Murray
W
e really are spoilt for choice in this area when it comes to walking be they day-long hikes, short dog walks, a decent get-the-heart-rate-going stroll or a simple meander through some pretty scenery.
One of my favourite family walks is ultimately a very short one - a 1km circular route that takes only 20 minutes to complete - although it can easily be extended. All family members enjoy it and there is not the usual moan when I suggest a walk if I say it will be this one.
The walk is however not really buggy friendly as the second part of the board walk is very narrow and there are no edges - although we have taken a buggy half way and then returned the same way. Interpretation boards telling you what flora and fauna can be spotted as well as explaining some of the history and importance of the peat bog are sited along the walk and they bring the whole experience to life. A wide range of birds and butterflies can be seen as well as lichens and mosses.
The board walk at Red Moss is a circular walk on boards across a raised peat bog - one of only twenty still surviving in the Lothians. For those of you who do not know this very popular walk, you turn left by Balerno High School, past the entrance to Currie Rugby Club and on towards Threipmuir Reservoir where there is a car park. Once parked, head south along the public road for 20om until you see the reserve entrance on the right hand side. Since we have been doing this walk, it has been gradually improved. The boards now cover the full circuit where originally they only went half way and a muddy path brought you back and the original boards have been replaced with new ones as they were beginning to break down in places.
22
Half way round you will come to a small natural pond and depending upon the time of year you will find frogspawn here, or water boatmen skating on the surface or even geese in for the annual migration. You don’t want to stray from the boardwalk for a number of reasons. Not only is the bog 6m deep in some places and very squelchy, the nature of the habitat is very sensitive and needs to be preserved. The Moss is continually under threat from invading birch and Scots pine which, if they were not cleared away regularly, would gradually take over the area and change it from bog to woodland. It was originally the bed of a shallow loch that existed in the Ice Age and is largely composed of peat built up over thousands

A ramble at Red Moss By Karen Murray
» of years. Its domed top is covered by heather, cotton grass and varieties of sphagnum moss. If you look carefully you will see the lint holes left over from the linen industry.
The whole area is part of the Pentland Hills Regional Park and Red Moss nature reserve along with Bavelaw Marsh make up Balerno Common Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) managed by Scottish Natural Heritage. Once you have completed the board walk and you want to wander further, continue south on the public road. You will walk through an area of birch scrub, with heather, blueberry and Sphagnum species as well as occasional pools until you reach a bridge. The Pentland Hills are displayed in all their glory ahead of you but on either side of the bridge is Bavelaw Marsh - the only area of fen of any size in the Lothian area.
Many folk come here to bird watch and there is a hide for this purpose, or they come to record some of the 159 different plants that grown here. However, the majority come simply to take in the views and enjoy the walk. Crossing the bridge, the road goes steeply uphill and at the top you have a couple of options for rather longer walks across the Pentlands. If you have the time and the equipment, then you will enjoy a long day out on the hills; if not, breathe deeply of the fresh air, enjoy the panoramic view and head back to the car.

Traditional Easter Recipes Recipes and food notes by Anne Pinkerton
E
aster has food traditions associated with spring, regrowth and new life. Many involve eggs, cream and young meats such as chicken, lamb and veal. All over Europe there are special celebration breads to mark the end of the Lent fast. Shrove Tuesday, Mardy Gras our pancake day, uses up the last of the rich foods before 40 days of a more restricted diet leading to Easter. The church encouraged these dietary rules because they made a virtue of necessity. Before fridges, canning and international food distribution there was often very little fresh food to eat at the end of the farming year. Many people still give up luxury foods for Lent and then enjoy an Easter feast and have fun rolling decorated eggs on Easter day. The two most popular British Easter foods, apart from chocolate eggs, are Hot Crossed Buns and Simnel Cake. Both are fun to make and not too difficult.
are well distributed. Cover the bowl with a tea- towel and leave in a warm place to double in size. About 2 hours When it is light and puffy knock it down and kneed briefly. Shape into buns and place to rise on a greased baking tray or greased bun tins. If you want to be traditional slash the buns with a sharp knife to make the cross. The buns should double in size; the time will depend on the warmth of your room. When ready to cook they should feel light and soft to the touch. Bake in a hot oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Just before they seem cooked get the glaze ready. Immediately on taking the buns out of the oven brush glaze twice on each one while still very hot. This should result in lovely shinning buns ready to cut and butter or toast.
Hot Crossed Buns Slightly adapted from Elizabeth David’s Spiced Buns For 24 buns Hot oven 200oC or gas 5 or 6 • • • • • • • • • •
450g to 500g plain white flour (bread or strong flour is best) 1 pkt fast action dried yeast 125g currants 1 level pudding spoon salt Aprox.1/2 pint milk; warmed to blood heat 60g soft light brown sugar, but white sugar will be ok 60g butter, softened, not straight from the fridge 2 tea spoons mixed sweet spices 2 standard medium eggs For the glaze - 2 table spoons milk taken from the ½ pint and 2 table spoons white sugar boiled together till bubbly and syrupy
Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Do not forget the yeast. Make a well in the centre and add the eggs and butter and as much of the milk to make a soft but not too sloppy dough. Stir in the currants so they

Simnel Cake The main feature of these Easter cakes is the decoration of toasted marzipan balls on the top. There are different traditions as to how many there should be; 11 for the apostles excluding Judas, 12 for the apostles, or 13 to include Jesus. A Dundee cake mixture will make delicious base for Simnel cake. Put half your mixture in the lined cake tin. Place a circle of marzipan on the mixture and add the rest of the cake mix and flatten the top. Bake in the usual way, test to see if cooked with a wooden skewer. It will take a little longer than usual because of the middle layer. Decorate with marzipan balls or, to avoid doctrinal complications, mini eggs look very pretty.
