Hello neighbours It’s definitely the count-down to summer, time to be thinking about al fresco dining (hopefully!), sorting the garden and getting in shape for the summer holidays. As usual you’ll find all you need locally in the pages of this magazine. We have a great range of pubs locally offering fantastic food, and many of them with outdoor seating areas, so make the most of any sunshine we get and treat yourself or the family to a meal out. On the topic of pubs, we spoke to the new owners of the Weavers in Currie to find out what their plans are for the pub, see article on page 46. And there are some great offers from local fitness and beauty businesses – check out all the June offers and make the most of them! Congratulations to Jean Roberts of Currie who won the crossword prize in the last issue of a free PC health check

from Sort my PC. This month, the lucky crossword competition winner will be taking lunch at the Blue Goose Country Pub just along the Lanark Road opposite the Water of Leith Visitor Centre. Under new management, it has been totally refurbished inside and opulently decorated, with a focus on high quality food – well worth a visit. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory and for supporting local businesses!

From Rigs To Riches By Emma Merchant

T
he signs are there if you look: Glenbrook Road’s crumbling drystone walls, its avenue of limes, and the gate peirs (columns) and gate lodges on Johnsburn Road and Bridge Road. They come from a time when horse-drawn carriages visited six charming country houses coyly hidden between Balerno’s Johnsburn Road and the Lang Whang. Bankhead House, Glenbrook House, Glenpark House, House of Cockburn, Johnsburn House and Larch Grove were all small estates built on what was originally the Cockburn Estate, an area of around 77 acres. All six estates were built adjacent to each other, and all on the south side of the Water of Leith. Because of its river and pockets of ancient woodland, the area is now protected as a place of Natural Beauty and Nature Conservation within Edinburgh’s Green Belt. It contains diverse wildlife, and was considered important enough to be included in The City of Edinburgh Council’s 2008 architectural Survey of Gardens and Designed Landscapes. 2)
Woodlands of ash, elm, oak, horse chestnut, sycamore, pine and spruce today provide very pretty views, but the area was once remarkably different. For perhaps hundreds of years, all that could be seen on the site was rough heathland, and ancient rigs and furrows hewn into the hillsides. Rig or runrig is the name given to the regular pattern ancient people, particularly in Scotland, carved into the land, for growing food. In some places you can still see the remains of these patterns on the landscape, for example around Braid Hills golf course in Edinburgh. Some time before 1750 the area was partially enclosed and planted. At that time, landlords were making efforts to improve farming methods following a disastrous famine in Midlothian between 1693 and 1703, and they had gradually begun to enclose their land to improve crop yields. During the next hundred years or so, as each of the country houses were built, the land would be enclosed further, divided into the modest parklands, fields, woodlands and attractive tree-lined roads we see today. The first of the six country houses to be built was Cockburn or ‘Coleburn’ House, on Cockburnhill Road. An L-shaped laird’s house, it was probably built for William Chiesley in 1672, but was later owned by a travelling merchant named Goode, with business interests in Jamaica. An A listed building, it boasts towers, a Renaissance entrance door, and sundials. Much of the estate land was planted and cultivated by 1750. Some of the newly created parks and rectangular enclosures are still visible today close to Cockburn House.

The next house to be built was Bankhead House, of Glenbrook Road, probably around or before 1766. No owner is mentioned until 1810 when alterations were made to the house. Glenpark or ‘Glendarroch’ House, on Glenbrook Road, appears around 1810, although it isn’t known exactly when it was built. Later demolished, it is the only house of the six not to have survived. Its walled gardens were transferred to Glenbrook House, and all that remains of it is a stable block and a gate-lodge on Glenbrook Road. Larch Grove, off Johnsburn Road, was built at the beginning of the 19th Century, in around 1845. An L-shaped house, it is largely hidden, but for its two entrances, on Johnsburn Road and Bridge Road. Glenbrook House, on Glenbrook Road, is assumed to have been built in the early 1800’s. It was originally called Birkfield or Birch Hill. The 1880’s saw it owned by a Mr J McK Brown, a farmer and grain merchant. Johnsburn House, the last to be built, can be seen on the corner of Johnsburn Road and Glenbrook Road. A B listed house, it was built for Professor Fergusson, Professor of Natural Philosopy at Edinburgh University, in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement. This Movement describes the work of a number of important designers active in the second half of the 19th Century. The best known of these is William Morris, whose richly patterned wallpaper designs were much desired. These days, however, his designs mostly grace upmarket vinyl tablecloths. Architects of the Arts and Crafts Movement discarded grand classic designs, producing instead, quaint asymmetrical houses with wide porches, pointed window arches, steeply sloping roofs and unusual embellishments. Johnsburn House is L-shaped, with Renaissance style embellishments, an ornamental weather vane, and apparently even two gargoyles, one in the shape of a man reading a book.
Perhaps this was perched on the house to celebrate Professor Fergusson’s studies. The Professor evidently enjoyed the house and gardens, and was said to have “made a variety of agricultural experiments on a small property… (probably Johnsburn House) which he has changed from a bare heath to a scene distinguished for beauty and fertility.” Beech trees that survive in the grounds may well have been planted by Professor Ferusson. Later the house was owned by another notable man, Sir Alexander Morison, who was an authority on diseases of the mind. Balerno has seen many developments over the last 150 years, but the six country house estates have remained largely unchanged. Although much of the combined land is now used for grazing and for pheasant shooting, the overall layout of the estates has been retained. Majestic trees still mark their park boundaries, and lodges, gateways, dry-stone walls and elegant avenues continue to speak of their elegant past. The area is well worth a stroll. To step into history, just keep your eyes open for clues, and let your imagination do the rest… All the properties are now in private ownership

Karen Murray ticks some boxes on a circular walk in Balerno
I
f you happen to be a busy person - as many of us are - but you still want to fit in some exercise, you have to grab moments when you can. Taxi mum that I am, there are often moments between daughter’s hockey drop off and son’s drama pick up that need to be utilised to their best. A brisk walk fills the time, ticks the exercise box and releases the endorphins that keep me smiling! On one such occasion, it was a lovely evening - cold but dry and even a hint of evening sunshine - so I parked the car in the Balerno High School car park and headed across the footbridge into the Currie RFC ground. I had in mind a circular walk that would bring me back to the car park in time for pick up and a rough idea of where I would go. I walked out of the grounds and onto Bavelaw Green road briefly, before heading left off the road and over a metal footbridge, almost lost in the overgrown foliage. I stopped for a view from the bridge of the tumbling river fairly fast flowing after substantial rain and then it was off again up stone steps and along a path that skirts the side of a field. The path comes out at the end of the Lymphoy Road with Malleny House on the left and the Sawmill Wood on the right.
22
Heading along the Lymphoy Road, I came to a gap between two fields on the right hand side. A narrow but obvious path runs between the fields so off I headed up the hill with stunning views of the Pentlands ahead in the dying rays of the sun. At the top of the hill is a burn which you need to cross - there were some stepping stones in place when I arrived so that made life easy, but I would recommend decent footwear (luckily I happened to be adequately attired). Over the burn and the path turns to the right and heads through some scrub land. You could be miles from anyway and

yet you know a thriving community
is but minutes away.
The path continues to meander for a while until you come to another burn. Over I went again and then I wasn’t sure whether to turn left or right - although knowing both would work. On a time limit, I chose the to go right knowing it would bring me back to where I began a little quicker. I was once more in Sawmill Wood and eventually returned to the beginning of the Lymphoy Road.
This time I walked down to Malleny House where I had time for a quick detour into the gardens gorgeous at any time of year but in burgeoning Spring particularly lovely. From Malleny Gardens, it is a short walk back through the Rugby Club grounds and into the Balerno High School car park. Allotted time well spent and feeling good after a brisk walk, fresh air, time to think - I picked up son from drama and home to feel good about myself!

Hilary Riddell, resident of Juniper Green By Emma Merchant

ou may spot her in Currie Post Office, but you are most likely to find Hilary Riddell at Balerno High School swimming pool. “I’m not sure how many children I’ve taught to swim during the last twenty five years, but it must be quite a few. These days, I’m even beginning to teach children of children!” “It started when I was a Cub leader,” says Hilary Riddell, swimming teacher and swimming class co-ordinator at Balerno High School. “We regularly took the Cubs swimming at Currie High school, but often had problems finding a lifeguard for the sessions. Eventually, some of us decided to qualify as lifeguards. This turned out to be really useful for me, because when Balerno High School opened, lifeguards were needed for the new swimming sessions. I volunteered to help but was given a job as a lifeguard, and really enjoyed it.” Hilary very soon qualified as a swimming teacher too. “I’ve taught all ages, but I especially enjoy teaching children. Watching them grow in confidence, and helping to develop their skills is just great. And when talented former pupils, like Stuart and Clare (who many current learners will know as their swimming instructor) and Natasha and Grant, come back to join our teaching team, well that’s really special.” Another former pupil, nineteen year old Craig McNally (Stuart’s younger brother), has also done exceptionally well. He specialises in 100m and 200m back-stroke, and will be attempting this month to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics!

1)”My Grandmother learning to lifesave, 1913, on the banks of the river Thames. In the genes??”
1)
“But I remember when Craig hated swimming and loathed getting his face wet! Fear of putting their face in the water holds many children back. Mums and dads can help enormously, however, by getting children’s faces wet in the bath or shower from an early age. Blowing bubbles in the water is good too.” Can anyone learn to swim? “Well, I don’t think we’ve failed yet to teach a child, but some people definitely find it harder. I suspect there may be some genetic element to this because ability often seems to run in families. In one family everyone swims well, no matter their shape or size, while in another, all the siblings will struggle.” “Some children are really terrified of water, and then it is important to be gentle and patient with them to gain their confidence. I love it when a nervous child eventually ‘gets it’ and realises swimming is fun. But I’m also quite firm. Discipline is very important to keep everyone safe, and I really do have eyes in the back of my head. Just ask some of my swimmers!” Is there anything Hilary doesn’t enjoy about her job? “Veruccas and ill-fitting goggles. Apart from that I have loved every minute of the last 25 years and feel very privileged to have been a small part in the lives of so many local children.” The Summer Holidays are fast approaching. Does Hilary avoid pool holidays? “No, not at all. I love swimming on holiday, especially in the sea. I fulfilled a life-time dream a few years ago, diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Amazing! Swimming is great fun. And it’s so important to learn. You never know when you may need it.” 2)

Vet’s Tip:
How to Train Your Own Pudsey
A
nyone watching Britain’s Got Talent will have been impressed at how well trained and happy Pudsey the dog was during his doggy dancing routines. No dog trained with force could have achieved this - Pudsey has been trained with kindness and rewards, so if you want your dog to be like Pudsey you should click and treat not yell and beat! Many people believe they need to be the pack leader to have a well behaved dog. The dominance myth has actually been disproven for over 20 years - dogs treated with harsh methods are more likely to develop behaviour problems such as aggression. The top reason for dogs to be euthanised is due to a behaviour problem and dogs that go to puppy classes are far less likely to be rehomed. With half a million pounds and the admiration of Simon Cowell on offer perhaps it’s time to get out the treats and have fun with your dog?! Goodbye Protected Rights by Personal Money Management State 2nd Pension Almost everyone qualifies for the basic state pension paid by their National Insurance Contribution. Most people also qualify for an additional state pension called the State 2nd Pension (S2P), previously known as SERPS (The State Earnings Related Pension Scheme). If you chose to contract out of either SERPS or S2P, all of your own and your employers National Insurance (NI) contributions were sent to the Tax Collection Centre. The appropriate portion was forwarded to your Personal Pension provider.
Removal of restrictions On the 6th April 2012 the restrictions applying to Protected Rights Funds were abolished and all funds will now be considered as Non Protected. In particular, when taking benefits you will not be required to include provision for a spouse/civil partners pension to be paid after your death.
Protected rights – non-protected rights The money that you or your employer contributed directly went into a Non-Protected Rights fund. The money coming from the rebated NI contributions by both you and your employer went into a fund called Protected Rights.
What happens next? The government will no longer make rebates into contracted out personal pension funds. Obviously this means your pension fund at retirement may be considerably reduced.
The rules determining what you could do with Protected and Non-Protected Rights Funds were different and more importantly there were specific restrictions on the Protected Rights Fund.
Also, should you die before taking benefits it will no longer be mandatory for the remaining funds to be used to provide a pension for a surviving spouse or civil partner.
After your mortgage, your pension is the second largest investment you will make in your life. Get it checked every 5 years minimum. Written by: Dr Peter Marshall PhD, DipPFS, AFPC Personal Money Management, tel: 0131 538 7390

June Recipe and Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton
F
“
laming June”, or so the saying goes! I think this has more to do with summer in England than for us a bit north of Potter’s Bar. To us in Scotland June is often the kindest month and with luck we can enjoy the wonderful very long days, flowers and food from the garden or allotment. Cleaver gardeners may have their first new potatoes and broad beans, herbs will be well up and there are elderflowers, sorrel and garlic leaves we can harvest from the wild.
This may all be a bit of a dream when you have a family to feed, not enough time and less in the budget than you hoped. There are still ways to make your food feel summery and leave you with to time to enjoy the long days and good weather if we get any. Pasta with cream and new vegetables Cook which ever shape of pasta you most enjoy and when it is ready have the following ready to add : A dash of olive oil 1 egg beaten into ¼ pint double or whipping cream Cooked asparagus chopped or new tiny broad beans or fresh peas just cooked. A rasher or 2 of thin crisp cooked bacon per person, broken up Salt and a good grinding of black pepper Chopped chives or mint or sorrel leaves. Chose the herb which will go best with the veg you are eating. eg. mint with peas. At the last moment add the veg, oil, herbs, bacon and then the cream and egg to the hot, drained pasta. Give it a quick mix to coat the pasta with the rest of the ingredients and there you are…a quick summer meal making expensive ingredients go further and still tasting good.
June is often a month people plan for outside events, galas and weddings. Summer celebration food is a British strength. Think of cold, decorated poached Scottish salmon, bowls of strawberries and meringues and puddings decorated with crystallized flowers or fruit. Rare roast beef sliced thin with tiny new potatoes and mint, followed by stewed apricots and cream are all simple and delicious.

Greek Courgette Fritters 2 large or 3 smaller courgettes, grated 150gm Greek Feta cheese, crumbled. Danish Feta is less strong tasting, I prefer the Greek original. Chopped mint leaves 2 eggs beaten Salt and pepper and a little ground coriander if liked. Plain flour Oil for frying In a bowl, mix all (except the oil) ingredients together. You will have a sloppy looking mess! A little at a time, mix in plain flour to take up the liquid and make a thick dropping

consistency. This might take 100gm or a little more flour. Heat the oil in a frying pan till it is just smoking - any hotter and the fritters will burn, too cold and they will be oily. Drop pudding-spoonfuls of mixture into the pan and cook till brown and crisp, turn the fritters and cook the other side. Keep the fritters hot on a dish with kitchen paper to absorb any excess oil. Cook in batches till all the mixture is used up. Serve with a tomato salad and some black olives and crusty bread. Flowers in food There are several flowers which are good to eat and when added to salads or as decoration to puddings give the dish a summery look. The Cyrenians grow salads on their holding at Humbie near Kirknewton, and include nasturtiums, snapdragon, violas, borage, chive flowers and pot marigolds in their salad mix. They sell them to the best restaurants in Edinburgh. Why not try them yourself? For fun you can crystallize rose petals with egg white and caster sugar and use them on cakes. Both violets and roses can be found in the cake decorating shelves of the super-market. Elderflower cordial On a dry day pick about 10 big heads of elderflowers. If you can, take them home quickly or keep them in a paper bag till you are there. This is because the dry flowers carry the yeast which will give the syrup a genuine flowery taste. If the flowers are wet they will make an unpleasant flavoured brew. Put the elderflower heads in a heat proof bowl. Slowly dissolve 450gm of sugar in ¾ pint of water. When this is done bring the syrup to the boil and then pour it over the elderflower heads. Cover with a clean cloth and set aside to go cold. Leave for a day to steep. Bottle in a screw topped jar and keep in the fridge. This can be diluted to taste with fizzy water, used to make elderflower water ice or be added to the fruit when cooking gooseberries. The Weavers, Currie Give it another go....
M
ost locals have watched as the various owners of The Weavers Pub in Currie have come and gone over the past few years. And one local couple, seeing the potential that it has to be a great community pub, have decided to take it on and finally transform it into their vision of a community-oriented, family-friendly pub. Meet Gavin and Elaine, both Currie locals who grew up here and went to Currie High School. Gavin runs a electrician business, Beatson Electrical, and Elaine works for the NHS and has worked locally in the past. They opened the doors of The Weavers at the end of March. Having worked behind the bar in other pubs, Elaine has a good deal of experience about what makes a good atmospheric pub, and they have already made changes at the Weavers that have been well received by their regular customers. “We really want to make it into a community pub” explains Elaine, “a place where people can bring their families, where couples can come, and where people of all ages can mix.” So how are they doing this? “For a start, we’ve moved the pool table through into the bar area, instead of having it in a separate room where it was previously. The pub was previously split between the two areas, but we’re reserving the other room for functions and bringing everything together in the bar and seating area. It’s made a huge difference to the atmosphere and we’ve noticed young and old joining in and playing pool together.” They are also keen to be involved in community in other ways – for example The Weavers provided refreshments for a recent planting event in Currie for the Pentland Edge Tenant and Residents Association, and for the Riding of the Marches. They support the local football team, Currie Star, and are the current

holders of the Pram Race title, which they hope to defend this year. They are delighted to welcome back The Weavers Pool Team who compete in the Pool League. Competitive pricing and a friendly atmosphere are what is so far bringing customers back to The Weavers. They offer Sky Sports and Wifi, and they are hoping to do food in the future. They have brightened the interior décor with a change of window dressing, making it a much brighter, open-looking place. “We’ve got lots of plans and ideas,” says Elaine, “but it’s early days yet and we will see what people want from the pub over time.” The Weavers is open weekdays from 3pm, from 12 noon on Saturdays and from 12.30pm on Sundays. If you haven’t done so already, it’s well worth dropping in to see what Gavin and Elaine are doing there, they will be delighted to welcome you. Function room for FREE hire including a buffet up to the value of £50! The Weavers function room comfortably seats 80 people. Reserve it for your function, private party, charity event or any celebration, and Gavin and Elaine will throw in a buffet for you up to the value of £50! (T&C’s apply). They can arrange catering for large events, as well as a disco if required. Booking forms are available online, please email theweaverspub@live.co.uk

New cancer support centre
G
ordon Macdonald MSP for Edinburgh Pentlands recently opened the Westerhaven Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre. This centre is a joint venture between the Wester Hailes Health Agency, which has been supporting the local community since 1998, and Macmillan Cancer Support a charity dedicated to helping cancer sufferers and their families. Gordon said “My family like many others has been touched by cancer. Over twenty years ago my father was diagnosed with lung cancer. A centre like Westerhaven would have been a godsend for us. With a free and confidential counselling service it would have supported us to understand my father’s illness and allowed my family to talk about their concerns and worries.”
Gordon Macdonald MSP Member of the Scottish Parliament for

The local event is well supported at community level, and Gordon from SortmyPC, father of two of the team players, coach and proud sponsor of the event said, “this is a fantastic tournament for grass roots rugby, and the boys played like total professionals. To be able to support the tournament too is a great boost”

he annual Mini Rugby Tournament was again this year hosted by the Currie Rugby Football Club. With around 30 teams of boys aged 5 and over playing, families and friends came in droves despite the unseasonably cold weather to support their boys playing some excellent running rugby. Currie Scout Group would like to invite YOU to come and join the adventure……. For more than 80 years, the 42nd Pentland Scout Group has been providing activities for young people in Currie. Its name may have changed several times but the aim of the Group and its leaders hasn’t – providing opportunities for young people to develop, learn and enjoy themselves. The group provides activities for children aged 6–18, meeting in our Hall on Forthview Crescent. To allow the group to continue running enjoyable programmes we urgently need volunteer adult leaders in our Beaver and Scout sections on Tuesday and Monday nights, or take on the key role of Group Manager (or Group Scout Leader). All of these offer the chance to make a real difference to our community and young people. So why not come and have fun whilst shaping today’s youngsters into the adults of tomorrow? In return you get great support and training, learning new skills and meeting new people. Just a few hours of your time now could make all the difference in years to come.
