Message from the Editor Hello neighbours As I write this, it is a sunny day and spring is bursting, so let’s hope we have plenty of sunny days to get out and about this month and make the most of all that our locality has to offer. The magazine has a distinctly spring-like feel to it, with local businesses offering everything we need for house, garden and family, as well of course as our regular walking trail pages. The feature article this month takes a look at a less well-known historic figure who made Kirknewton his home, and there is also Maureen McIntyre’s regular family history column as usual. With the Easter holidays coming up soon, you don’t need to go far for a choice of holiday activities to keep the children occupied : besides rambling around our local parks and woods, there is a range of structured activities available, so turn to the what’s on listing on page 46 for some ideas.

Countryside Retreat for a Famous Eighteenth Century Edinburgh Doctor by Jane Corrie

T

here is a rash of Enlightenmentrelated birthdays going on, but amongst the more famous figures being remembered, there are other people rather less well known whose life and achievement deserves celebrating too. William Cullen, Professor of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, was born 300 years ago last year, and he has a particular connection with Kirknewton. In the year 1778 William Cullen bought some land and a house on the shoulder of the Pentland Hills, south west of Kirknewton. Whenever he could get away from his professional duties in Edinburgh it was his delight to cultivate his garden here and to work on developing the surrounding farm. He particularly enjoyed growing a range of exotic plants in the picturesque miniature glen running down the hill from his house. He extended the house too. In fact he was a thoroughgoing scientific ‘improver’, to use the term current in the 18th century. As a doctor he worked to cure people and to understand the nature of disease, and in his country retreat he applied a similarly analytical and caring attitude to his land, his plants and his animals.

Cullen memoria

kirkyard

William Cullen is remembered close to Kirknewton Parish Kirk. At the beginning of the 20th century a fine plaque, showing his very distinctive profile, was placed above the entrance to the walled enclosure surrounding the tomb of his son, the judge Lord Cullen. This plaque was put in place to commemorate Cullen as a former President of the College by members of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. It has turned bright green over the years so is easy to find. In his time William Cullen was renowned as a lecturer in Agriculture and Chemistry as well as Medicine. Initially he was reluctant to publish but copies of his lectures printed in editions pirated from student notes persuaded him otherwise. It was partly the income from his writing that financed his country pursuits at Kirknewton. He also added to his wealth, and became even more famous, as a result of his private practice as a physician. This practice was carried out mainly by letter. He would receive a written request for advice and would reply very promptly, often enclosing a prescription to be made up by a local surgeon-apothecary. This service was charged at a starting rate of one guinea (£1.05p). Of course it was usually only available to the wealthy. A skilled workman of the time would be lucky to earn a shilling (5p) a day. Sometimes letters would also come to Dr Cullen from the patient’s doctor, or more than one doctor and sometimes from concerned relatives as well. The network of communications set up seems almost more like our internetbased times than the pattern of surgery visits and home calls familiar in the 19th and 20th century. Such was William Cullen’s increasing fame letters would sometimes go back and forth across the world, reflecting the movement of people from Scotland to such places as the New World and India. Much of this fascinating correspondence has been preserved and is now in the Sibbald Library of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. After 1780 Professor Cullen

was able to make copies of his own letters. This he did using a very new technology. His friend and colleague James Watt invented a machine that used chemically impregnated paper to run off single copies of documents, and William Cullen was among the first to make use of this machine. An example of one of James Watt’s copiers can be seen by request in the Library of the University named in his honour, the Heriot Watt. It remained an invaluable bit of equipment for busy professionals for many years to come. Very recently letters to and from James Boswell and William Cullen have been found by a researcher in the Sibbald Library. When he brought his friend and mentor Dr Samuel Johnson to Scotland Boswell took the opportunity of consulting three of the most eminent physicians of the time about Dr Johnson’s multiple health problems. The doctors he wrote to were Drs Cullen, Munro (the second of that name) and Hope. Like William Cullen, John Hope was an active and successful teacher and practitioner of Medicine. But Hope’s main interest was the newly emerging science of Botany. He was responsible for setting up a fine new Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, out in what was then the countryside on Leith Walk. This garden flourished for 60 years and is the predecessor of the present Royal Botanic Garden at Inverleith. And John Hope is finally receiving better public recognition through the naming of the beautiful new interpretation and visitor centre at the Botanics - ‘the John Hope Gateway’. The achievements of the physicians of the 18th century have been overshadowed by the more dramatic advances in the understanding and practice of medicine of the 19th century. Although the 17th century saw some major developments in our understanding of anatomy and physiology, it was only in the 19th century that doctors got to grips with cell biology and disease processes.

Documents fro based practice.m Cullen’s correspondencePicture credit Iain Noon.

The be-wigged physicians of the 17th and 18th centuries still clung to the ideas of antiquity about the importance of balancing the body’s ‘humours.’ This was the reason for their obsession with bowel movements and their reliance on bleeding the patient for many different kinds of illness. The film ‘the Madness of King George’ gives a grisly but accurate impression of these methods at work. But William Cullen encouraged his students to observe their patients’ symptoms very closely, and to pay close attention to their own experience of which treatments worked and which did not. His teaching centred on theories about the nervous system which were later found to be inadequate (he invented the word neurotic). But his attention to the actual patient was part of the emergence of what we would now recognise as evidence-based medicine. And his pupils, whether they became ship’s doctors or country-based physicians, remembered the teaching and the man himself with gratitude and great fondness. He was also very highly thought of by his private patients with whom he dealt very carefully, often conservatively, because they were at a distance. His advice to them rang the changes on themes that sound very modern: do not eat too much, drink with moderation and take plenty of exercise. William Cullen’s retreat at Kirknewton enabled this very busy, successful professional man to lead a healthier life himself in his later years. Jane Corrie is a Garden Guide and Research Associate at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. She is currently involved in a project to re-construct the gardener’s house from John Hope’s 18th Century Botanic Garden in the present Royal Botanic Garden. See www.botaniccottage.org. With thanks to local resident Charles Young.

How do I start?

Family history column by Maureen McIntyre

G

enealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. I have just finished 3 years of study at the University of Strathclyde in Genealogy, so if you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches please email me and I will endeavour to help. Please email me rootsandbranches@hotmail.co.uk

Now you can start to fill in the blanks. If you are able to visit the Scotlands People Centre in Edinburgh you will be able to fill in many of these blanks in the one day. There is a daily charge for this but you have the chance to look at as many births, marriage, death and census records as you can. All information about the Centre is available at http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk

One of the most common questions people often ask me is “How do I start?” and I always make the same suggestions.

If you are unable to visit the centre then you can do a certain amount of your research online and there are many web sites which can help you. There is a cost for most of the web sites and the charges range from yearly subscriptions to payfor-view charges. Here are three web site addresses that I use frequently.

Always be aware that you may uncover family ‘secrets’, it is important to remember this as you may bring back memories to older member of your family - illegitimacy and non-lawful marriages were very common but seldom discussed.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Look at what you already know and compile a basic diagram starting with your name and details.

http://www.ancestry.co.uk

Talk to your relatives and get as much information as you can for example names, ages, occupations, areas where they lived etc and write all the information down as you are told it – never rely on your memory as it can get very confusing especially if each branch of your family had relations with the same name – my own tree has 11 different John Fernie’s and 10 Margaret Fernie’s.

When you find a record that contains your family members this record will have a unique reference number, I would always suggest that you record this reference number as part of your research. It is very common to make an error when recording dates, some of the dates may be difficult to read or you may transpose figures, but if you have the unique reference number then it will always be easy to get back to that record.

Always look for trends and patterns, alarm bells should start to ring if for example for three generations the sons have been called John, James and William from Inverness but then you start to see Robert, David and Isaac from Fife – there is a good chance that you have made a mistake and are following the wrong family.

There are many different ways to record the information from handwritten charts to computer programmes and each person needs to find what works for them.

A peaceful spot for a wander By Karen Murray

W

e are incredibly lucky to live where we do, in easy access to towns and cities but among wonderful and diverse countryside with many a place to walk.

Forestry Commission and is a very peaceful spot for a wee wander. Not that Leyden Road is by any means busy, but as soon as you step off the tarmac and on to the forest path, you can feel the peace descend. Beautiful Scots Pine belts surround the more modern Sitka spruce areas and the boundaries comprise beautiful old beech trees that indicate how old this forest is. Parts of the woodland are known to date to at least 1860 which is why there is such a rich flora and fauna to be seen.

One particularly popular route for both walkers and joggers alike is the ‘Leyden Loop’. Many a trainee moon walker or those getting in trim for the Race for Life, tread this route on a regular basis. From Kirknewton village centre, head toward the railway station, over the railway line and then take the left turn up Leyden Road. Follow the road all the way along past farms and fields until you reach the Lang Wang (Lanark Road). Turn left towards Balerno, then left on the B7031 back to Kirknewton. This is perhaps not the most exciting of routes, but it is a good 1.5-2 hour walk, the views from Leyden Road to the Forth Bridges and beyond are often spectacular as are those over the Pentland Hills. You will often be able to stop for a while and watch the gliders take off and land at the airfield and of course, you end up back where you started. However, I am always looking for somewhere different to walk and whilst taking this route on one of my training missions, I noticed a forest track off Leyden Road, around 1.5miles up the road. Selm Muir Forest is owned and managed by the

Birdsong seems to emanate from everywhere - if you are a bit of a twitcher you will be able to spot bullfinch, great spotted woodpeckers and even sparrow hawks. I’m no twitcher but I love the sound of the birdsong. As well as the birds, the forest is one the places in Scotland you might be lucky enough to come across roe deer. If you are very quiet as you wander round the woodland you might just spot their white rumps bounding away through the trees.

When you do visit any forest you must of course remember to follow the Forest Code:

forest - still snow-covered on the day I went. However, there are no formal footpaths in Selm Muir wood. The forest road is fairly level and there are various informal tracks through the wood. As the paths have not been formalised they are rough, uneven and there are open ditches, so it is best to wear sturdy footwear and keep an eye out as you walk.

If you are doing the ‘Leyden Loop’, Selm Muir can be an added couple of miles to the route, taking a wander along the first part of the track and back. Either way you are sure to enjoy the peace and quiet of Selm Muir.

LIVINGSTON SUPERCENTRE

If you are wanting a peaceful walk or a good dog walk, this is a perfect place and you can drive up Leyden Road and park at the entrance, although you must be careful not to block access to the forest or obstruct the road. The walk in from Leyden Road is a long straight track until the forest opens up and the paths meander through the woodland.

Traditional Easter Recipes Recipes and food notes by Anne Pinkerton

E

aster has food traditions associated with spring, regrowth and new life. Many involve eggs, cream and young meats such as chicken, lamb and veal. All over Europe there are special celebration breads to mark the end of the Lent fast. Shrove Tuesday, Mardy Gras our pancake day, uses up the last of the rich foods before 40 days of a more restricted diet leading to Easter. The church encouraged these dietary rules because they made a virtue of necessity. Before fridges, canning and international food distribution there was often very little fresh food to eat at the end of the farming year. Many people still give up luxury foods for Lent and then enjoy an Easter feast and have fun rolling decorated eggs on Easter day. The two most popular British Easter foods, apart from chocolate eggs, are Hot Crossed Buns and Simnel Cake. Both are fun to make and not too difficult.

are well distributed. Cover the bowl with a tea- towel and leave in a warm place to double in size. About 2 hours When it is light and puffy knock it down and kneed briefly. Shape into buns and place to rise on a greased baking tray or greased bun tins. If you want to be traditional slash the buns with a sharp knife to make the cross. The buns should double in size; the time will depend on the warmth of your room. When ready to cook they should feel light and soft to the touch. Bake in a hot oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Just before they seem cooked get the glaze ready. Immediately on taking the buns out of the oven brush glaze twice on each one while still very hot. This should result in lovely shinning buns ready to cut and butter or toast.

Hot Crossed Buns Slightly adapted from Elizabeth David’s Spiced Buns For 24 buns Hot oven 200oC or gas 5 or 6 • • • • • • • • • •

450g to 500g plain white flour (bread or strong flour is best) 1 pkt fast action dried yeast 125g currants 1 level pudding spoon salt Aprox.1/2 pint milk; warmed to blood heat 60g soft light brown sugar, but white sugar will be ok 60g butter, softened, not straight from the fridge 2 tea spoons mixed sweet spices 2 standard medium eggs For the glaze - 2 table spoons milk taken from the ½ pint and 2 table spoons white sugar boiled together till bubbly and syrupy

Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Do not forget the yeast. Make a well in the centre and add the eggs and butter and as much of the milk to make a soft but not too sloppy dough. Stir in the currants so they

Simnel Cake The main feature of these Easter cakes is the decoration of toasted marzipan balls on the top. There are different traditions as to how many there should be; 11 for the apostles excluding Judas, 12 for the apostles, or 13 to include Jesus. A Dundee cake mixture will make delicious base for Simnel cake. Put half your mixture in the lined cake tin. Place a circle of marzipan on the mixture and add the rest of the cake mix and flatten the top. Bake in the usual way, test to see if cooked with a wooden skewer. It will take a little longer than usual because of the middle layer. Decorate with marzipan balls or, to avoid doctrinal complications, mini eggs look very pretty.

Spicy Village, Balerno Mohammad, who owns and runs the Spicy village in Main Street Balerno, comes from a well-established line of Indian chefs. His father Mr. Gulzar was the first Indian chef in Glasgow, working at two restaurants - the Shish Mahal in Gibson Street and the Taj Mahal in Park Road. The Spicy Village curries are the finest Indian curries still made to the same traditional recipes as Mohammad’s father. They are also very different to the usual Edinburgh-style curries which are mainly Bangladeshi. For those of you not sure of the difference I recommend you give them a try and taste the difference. I have eaten at the Spicy Village a few times and each time I have really enjoyed the freshness of the flavour and the complexity of the spices. “School Garden ‘springs’ into life”

S

pring is in the air, and there’s a spring in the step of several pupils at West Calder High School, as further work gets underway in the school’s beautiful courtyard garden. The school’s Eco – Group, led by Mr Begarnie, won the Stellar Award for Team of the Year Eco / Environment 2010. Some members of the group attended the glitzy Stellar Awards ceremony last autumn at Howden Park Centre, but those who were unable to attend received their certificates today from former WCHS pupil and MSP, Angela Constance, Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning.

The S3 boys gardening group, led by Mr McIntosh, showed Miss Constance the vegetable beds they are creating. Today they worked hard to barrow the soil and compost delivered by the council into the garden. S1 boys are working on creating a wildlife flower garden, whilst Mrs Smith from the Home Economics department is working with some pupils to create a herb garden. Mrs Lindsay, Depute Head teacher, said “This is an exciting time as we develop our garden as an outside classroom and try to link more of our learning and teaching to the real world outside. We hope lots of pupils will benefit from this work in the future.”

Cathy Bird School of Highland Dancing

R

hea Kerr, Rachel Casey and Carys Nelson successfully auditioned and will be dancing in this year’s Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The girls are all from Cathy Bird School of Highland Dancing. Cathy and all the dancers are so proud of them.
