Welcome to the first Konect of 2015!

Technology 24

During the cold winter months, our local cafés keep us fuelled with hot drinks, hot food and comforting home baking in a warm atmosphere to meet up with friends, colleagues or just to relax. So I’ve put together a guide in this issue for you to discover some independent cafés in the local area and a bit further afield.

Walk 46

We’ve got some great competitions to start the year in this issue – The Fragrance Shop in Livingston are giving away two bottles of a new luxury fragrance - see page 22 and hurry to get your entry in as the competition closes in time for Valentines Day! Also Howden Park Centre are giving away tickets to a fantastic comedy night, see page 48 for details. Business spotlights – including Kirknewton Pharmacy which Kirknewton is very pleased to welcome! – walk, food, technology and other regular columns are all here. If you’ve got something interesting and different going on that you’d like to share with the local community, do get in touch and we may be able to feature your story in an upcoming issue.

K onect Café Crawl

A round-up of independent local cafés

I love cafés. They’re for meeting, escaping, talking, working, reading; for a quick meal or a leisurely coffee. Owners lovingly bring a little bit of their dream to their café. For some, it’s about beautiful décor and ambience; for others it’s speciality food or an obsession with the coffee itself. Cafés all have different personalities, so there’s a café for every occasion and every mood. With huge pleasure over the past couple of months I’ve visited almost all cafés in the area Konect covers, so use this guide to discover one that you didn’t know about, either close home or a little further afield....

Bay Tree Café

, East Calder, (formerly One Stop Coffee Shop) has been under new ownership since last summer. It’s a compact premises with four small tables, great for a quick stop and re-charge, serving a cooked breakfast from 8-11.30am and if you’re in a hurry you can pre-order your food. Free wifi and a selection of newspapers. 227 Main Street, East Calder, EH53 0EL Tel: 01506 881016. Open Mon to Fri 8am-4pm, Sat 8.30am -4pm.

Thistles Coffee Shop, West

Calder, is named after the landmark Thistle Tower that used to be located a few buildings down. We sampled soup of the day here – a very generous sized serving. The café was buzzing with customers and there is a kids’ corner. Huge thistle-inspired lamp pendants hang from the ceiling, there is a good atmosphere and it’s clearly a popular local café. 11 Main Street, West Calder, EH55 8BY. Tel 01506 873322. Open Mon - Fri 8.00 am - 4.00 pm & Sat 8.30 am - 4.00 pm.

Café Nuovo

Coffee Cup Café, Deans

Almondell Café, East Calder,

within Veitch’s Garden Centre is run by professional chef Lydia who has selected the menu based on over 10 years catering experience. They provide breakfasts, lunches, hot snacks and home-baking, most of which is done on-site – the cheesecakes seem particularly popular! It has a homely and relaxed atmosphere with a mixture of table seating and sofa/coffee table area for relaxing. The proceeds are used to fund Lydia’s charity work in Zimbabwe. Within Veitch’s Garden Centre, East Calder, EH53 0ET. Tel: 07955 382042. The café has been closed during January but re-opens on 26th Jan. Open 7 days 10am - 4.30pm

8 konect

, West Calder, is a long-established café run by locals Harry and Carla who also have the busy Food on the Go sandwich delivery and catering business. Cooked breakfasts, lunches and their own bakery products. They usually have a little bookshelf of second-hand books to buy for a charity donation too. Family-run friendly café. 8 Main Street, West Calder, EH55 8DA. 01506 871217. Open Mon to Fri 7.30 am– 4pm, Sat 8am - 4pm

Little Whispers Café

is tucked away off the Main Street in West Calder within Little Whispers shop. This small café has a peaceful, sanctuary-like atmosphere. Their cakes are baked on the premises by owners Carol and Steve, who is a qualified chef. They don’t do a full lunch menu, but it’s a perfect spot for a quiet drink and quality cake. They offer a cup reading service (tea leaves or coffee grounds). 48 Main Street, West Calder, EH55 8DR. Tel 01506 253467. Open 10am – 4pm Mon to Fri and 10am – 3pm Saturday.

Cupcake Café Bar, Torphichen

The Coffee Cup

, Deans, Livingston - run by Deans resident Val, it is one of Livingston’s very few (only?) independent café owned by a local person, which makes it special to start with! Val wanted to create somewhere nice in Deans for people to meet up for a coffee or snack. There is a cosy corner with sofa and kids’ toys. The café is particularly popular for Val’s monthly themed-nights – she runs Chinese nights, Indian nights, Greek nights etc which are incredibly good value. 118 Carmondean Centre, Deans. EH54 8TD. Open Mon-Sat 8am-3pm and Sunday 9am-3pm.

Bus Stop Café

, Bathgate is bright and quirky. There are plenty of tables and the walls are lined with vintage china and tea pots, most of which have been donated by Bathgate residents. You order your food at the counter that looks like a domestic kitchen, complete with fridge covered in magnets, and you can see café owner Pinar or other staff members preparing your food fresh right there. Also sells old-fashioned sweets. 24 South Bridge Street, Bathgate, EH48 1TL. Open Mon to Sat 8.00am -16.30pm

1912, Bathgate – in the renovated

landmark building, beautifully furnished to make the most of its architectural features, including the feature window facing towards Glasgow Road, and a mezzanine level above the bar. Quality food, free wifi, good atmosphere. In the evenings it transforms into a bar with regular live music. Their approach was summed up for me by the owner when they opened, who said, “If you feel like a glass of champagne with your stovie, why not?” 2 South Bridge Street, Bathgate, EH48 1TW. Tel 01506 633133. Open Sun - Thurs 11am to late, Fri - Sat 9.30am to late.

Cupcake Café Bar

, Torphichen is in a country setting so there’s plenty of room for a garden with several picnic tables, which I’m sure will be great in the warmer weather. I visited on a cold January day though and enjoyed their heart-warming cream of mushroom soup - made from scratch on site – and Brodies coffee. There was plenty of friendly banter and some regular customers who are self-appointed scone experts reckon they are the best scones anywhere! And of course as the name suggest, there are cupcakes galore, which, like all the food, are made on site. Free Wifi. Westerwood Farm, Torphichen. Open 7 days 9am -4pm.

Riccarton Garden Centre Coffee Shop, Currie offers a very

extensive menu with loads of filling choices for baps, paninis, baguettes, tortillas, jacket potatoes, not to mention salads, soups and specials dishes. The café is spacious but is subdivided into sections, giving each area a cosier feel, including a raised area with a few tables and children’s play area, and a conservatory. Riccarton Garden Centre, Riccarton Mains Road, Currie, EH14 5AA. Open Mon to Sat 9am-5pm, Sunday 10am-5pm. Tel 0131 449 4004.

The Mill at St Joseph’s,

Balerno is a community café - any profits go back into the running of The St Joseph’s Centre for the benefit of the community or other causes. (The Centre is used for many events) – the café tables are stacked away and it is a large space). Most staff are volunteers and will give you a cheery greeting, and home-baking contributed by local people adds to the range of food made daily on-site. The Mill uses fairly-traded products as much as possible. It’s a very relaxed environment with a kids corner with toys and books,

konect 9

so is an ideal meeting place for parents with toddlers. Free wifi. Adjacent to Balerno Parish Church, on the roundabout in Balerno. EH14 7EH. Open Tues - Fri 9.30am-2pm.

The Corner Café, Currie, is

spacious and charmingly furnished with mis-matched wooden tables and chairs painted in creams/pastels or bare wood, giving it a relaxed farmhouse feel. When I visited for a pre-Christmas catch-up with a friend, there was a buzz and good atmosphere. There is a large gluten-free section on the menu. The café is table service and the food and coffee we had that day was great. 20 Lanark Road West, Currie, EH14 5NY. Tel 0131 449 3153. Open Mon to Fri 8.30am – 5pm, Sat 10am – 5pm, Sun 10am – 4pm.

Molly’s

, Juniper Green, celebrated its first birthday last month, and while you may know Molly’s for their coffee and cakes (owner Sarah runs cake and sugar craft classes) they now offer light lunches too soups, filled rolls etc. Everything is made on site – the day I was there the scones had sold out by 11am, so I had one from the second fresh batch of the day! (according to one of Sarah’s other customers they are the “best scones in Edinburgh...”). Free wifi. Open 9am-4pm Mon - Thurs and Sat; Fridays 9.30-4pm. 563 Lanark Road, Juniper Green, EH14 5DB. Tel 0131 610 0665

sweet enough to take with no sugar) and amazing home baking during the day. They have a deli counter and on Friday and Saturday they serve real foodie food in the evenings. 36 Main Street, Balerno, EH14 7EH. Tel 07790 377648. Open Mon to Fri 9am -5pm, Sat 9am-3pm, Sun 10am-2.30pm. The Bistro is open for meals Fri & Sat 6pm – 10pm.

Merlot & Mocha

, Currie is the new one on the block, opened just before Christmas. Owned by a local businessman, it has been refurbished and is light and spacious. The furniture gives it a pub-like appearance at first glance but there are touches that are definitely more café-like – an interesting mixture and the explanation is in the name! The food we tried was good (paninis, soup with warm bread, creamy mushrooms) and the table service also good. They do tapas on a Tuesday evening. Looking forward to finding out more as they get established. Free wifi. 4-5 Pentland View Court, Currie, EH14 5NP. Tel: 0131 4492828. Open Mon – Fri from 8.30 - late, Sat/Sun 10am late

Woods Deli, Juniper Green, are

very proud of their food, and judging by the excellent salted caramel brownie I sampled here, justifiably so! (They sell 40 trays of this brownie every week, so I’m not the only one who thinks it’s pretty good!). The coffee has been carefully selected from Italy and all cooking and baking is done on site. On Thurs, Fri and Sat evenings it is Woods Bistro serving high quality meals (“I like to think we set the standard for gastro food in this area.”). Open Mon to Sat 9am – 5pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm. (Bistro open Thus to Sat 6pm-midnight).

Letterbox Bistro

, Balerno is a hidden gem...Steven and Sharon, who run Balerno Post Office, have partitioned off the end of the room and turned it into a really cosy little café/restaurant, serving excellent Italian coffees (probably my favourite coffee is here of all the ones I’ve tried – smooth and

INTERVIEW WITH

A founder of the New Town Roller Girls

Victoria Tickle speaks to one of the founders of an exciting new sports team in West Lothian... New Town Roller Girls are Livingston’s only female flat-track roller derby league. They are three years old and are making their bouting debuts this year in the BritishChampionships. Flat track roller derby is a fast-paced, full contact team sport that requires speed, strategy, and athleticism. Could you introduce yourself? My name is Hazzard! Or, if you want to get official, Hazel. Derby girls have special connections with their alter egos, what’s yours? My derby name came from my work where I do some of our health and safety bits and bobs and I’m known to be a bit clumsy. The name developed from there and then from there it came in to derby! How did you get involved with the sport? I watched Whip It! At the time I started looking up other leagues in Scotland but many of them where too far away from me or had big waiting lists for new skaters. So me and a couple others started our own team in Livingston. Can you describe your personal journey with Derby? After we’d decided to start up our own league the next step was skates. As I had no idea what we were doing I bought these (in hindsight) really awful skates. Thankfully, once we’d got all our kit we managed to get ourselves a training venue

18 konect

at Craigswood. Back in those days we only practiced every second Sunday which now I find hard to think that I had to go without skating for so long! It took us a while to get ourselves established properly but with help from local leagues we started to grow both our skills and our numbers. The past year I feel has been our best year. I’ve got to see so many enthusiastic girls come in to the NTRG fold and I look forward to playing alongside them this year! Why is Livingston such a great place to be? Livingston has so much potential for the growth of roller derby within it. The only thing it is lacking so far is a venue for us to host games. Unlike the bigger cities in Scotland, Livingston just doesn’t have a big sports complex to host many sports’ games. Livingston and the surrounding areas would benefit extremely well from one! For us, we’ve found a wealth of talented and determined ladies that have brought so much to the league already and we hope we find more! Who can play derby & who are NTRG looking for? Anyone can play! Although we may be a women’s league there are men’s leagues around Scotland. There’s also one junior league too! Even though we might only take women as players at the moment, men that are interested in joining can be referees or NSO’s (non-skating officials) as well. That also applies to women who maybe don’t want to do the contact or cannot skate for some reason. We would love to have as many people involved in our wonderful sport as we can and we have the platform to do that at NTRG!

Pain free dental care with the magic wand!

A lot of people are put off visiting the dentist because they need to have an injection. Because of this we have invested in the wand. The wand is a computerized anesthetic delivery system which ensures patients can be numbed up pain free, unlike normal injections. The wand also does not leave you feeling numb for hours after. We now use the wand as part of our dental care and patients tell us how much it has transformed their dental experience.

If you don’t like injections you have to try the wand

SPOTLIGHT ON

Kirknewton Pharmacy With a lot of enthusiasm, Fergal Coffey and his team have brought Kirknewton the pharmacy it desperately needed... “It’s always been my ambition to run community pharmacies,” Fergal explains. And just at a time of calls for increased access to healthcare services in the village, Fergal was working way from elsewhere in the Central Belt looking for a location to open a pharmacy. Happily, we found each other. “I looked at many potential locations, and identified Kirknewton in 2013 - around the time that this Main Street premises was becoming available.” “In theory any pharmacist can open shop, but in order to be able to dispense NHS-prescribed medicines, and to be able to offer NHS services, you have to apply for an NHS pharmacy contract,” explains Fergal. “I would really like to thank the Community Council, the Development Trust and everyone who supported us with the application.” You might be surprised at the amount of knowledge he had to gain about the daily habits of Kirknewtonians in order to present a compelling argument to the NHS as to why we deserved a pharmacy! As the population of Kirknewton is much lower than the average size of a community to have its own pharmacy, he had to describe the hour long trip on public transport for Kirknewton residents to get to East Calder pharmacy; he investigated the age of the population (there is an above-average number of children); the pattern of car ownership and other factors. “I want to offer extra services and go the extra mile,” says Fergal. Kirknewton Pharmacy offers a prescription collection and delivery service (including for repeat medication) and they hope to serve not only Kirknewton itself but other areas where there isn’t already a delivery service.. “We offer the NHS smoking cessation service (for free nicotine patches), holiday healthcare (advice and vaccinations), as well as the NHS minor ailments service. So instead of waiting for a GP appointment, you just come into the pharmacy and in many cases we can help and give medication.” The minor ailments service covers things such as coughs and colds, mild eczema and acne, allergies, constipation, indigestion, athletes foot, warts and

Some of the team, (l-r) Susan, Douglas and Liz verrucas, various aches and pains. It’s great news for Kirknewton residents to be able to get help for these things without having to go to East Calder – and crucially it reduces the pressure on GP appointments which are needed for more serious conditions. Besides Fergal, the team consists of Douglas who will be the main pharmacist here; Liz, who is the dispenser; Catrin and Susan, who are both from Kirknewton, are the counter assistants, and Andrew is the driver. Open - 9am-6pm Mon – Fri (closed 1pm-2pm) 9am-1pm Sat 24 Main Street, Kirknewton EH27 8AH

TECHNOLOGY

Something in the air Our sense of smell is the most powerful of all our senses - we’re quick to notice if something doesn’t smell good. Damp, pets and perfumes can all create unwanted odours in our homes, but the good news is that there are lots of devices that can clear the air.

If you’ve seen advertising breaks recently you’ve probably seen ads for devices such as the Air Wick Freshmatic, which regularly release puffs of fragrance to make your room smell nicer. You can pick up Freshmatic bases - the bits that do the puffing - for around £6 for two, and refills are around £6 to £12 for a pack of four.

Damp is one of the most distinctive unwanted odours, and it can be serious: damp can cause respiratory problems, especially in young children and the elderly. It’s usually caused by inadequate ventilation, over-enthusiastic showering or drying clothes indoors, especially in winter, and you can banish it with a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier sucks moisture out of the air and puts it in a tank, and some models can be installed permanently with a drain tube to take the water outside. Don’t waste your time with little gel-pack dehumidifiers: electric ones can cost as little as £50, although for a typical home you’d be better off with one of the very many models costing around £100. Those ones are capable of handling 10 litres of water before it’s time to empty them; smaller, cheaper ones need emptied much more frequently. If the unwanted odours are from dust, smoke or other small particles, an air purifier such as Dehumidifier (not branded) the Vax HEPA 2 Air Purifier (around £150) can help. The HEPA bit is important: it’s short for high-efficiency particulate air, and it’s an international standard for air cleaning gadgets. If it isn’t HEPA it might not be very good. You’ll also find HEPA-accredited vacuum cleaners from the likes of Vax and Dyson, which are particularly good for houses with pets.

24 konect

The problem with air fresheners, of course, is that they mask odours rather than get rid of them. If you’re dealing with stubborn odours, such as the ones left on furniture by wet dogs or from food smeared on the sofa by small children, a dedicated cleaning gadget might help. Air Wick Freshmatic Base

Vax’s Rapide (around £129) and Bissell’s Cleanview use jets of water and detergent to clean carpet and upholstery and then suck the liquid back in again. The results can be good - provided, that is, that the fabric’s colour doesn’t run. Always try a small area first, and look for anti-allergen detergents. However a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning service will usually give you a much better and more thorough result. Vax HEPA vacuum cleaner

Edinburgh Wood Fuel Nothing beats a crackling fire in the hearth for comfort on a cold day. The rituals of collecting winter fuel, stacking the woodpile, laying a fire and taking out the ashes are making a comeback a generation since open fires were largely replaced by gas, oil or electric central heating. As the need for sustainable heat production becomes increasingly topical, wood-burning stoves – carefully engineered high tec versions of the open fire - are becoming increasingly popular as a real flame fire is not only beautiful but is a sustainable form of heating. Edinburgh Wood Fuel (EWF) is a small local familyrun business based in Baberton which has been supplying wood fuel in a variety of forms since 2006. EWF now has over 550 customers and the business has gone from strength to strength over the last 18 months or so. They take care of the “collecting

winter fuel” part of the ritual (and will even stack it for you if you like!). The company supplies and delivers a variety of quality products including firewood, kindling, briquettes, charcoal and wood pellets, and is well set to deal with increasing demand for wood fuel. Not all wood is the same, as EWF owner Chris Edmunds points out, and it’s important to assess the moisture content, density and potential contamination of wood to be burnt. EWF supply only carefully sourced fuel that will burn with maximum efficiency. The wood is sustainably sourced from the UK (and locally where possible) and is seasoned for at least 18 months, meaning customers receive wood ready to burn. Hardwood species supplied include ash, beech, sycamore, oak and cherry. Softwood species include larch and Scots pine. Chris comments, “There are many people out there supplying firewood but EWF prides itself on a professional and prompt service. Customers are contacted by the delivery team to arrange a mutually convenient time for delivery. It is evident that customers enjoy this personal service as EWF receives orders from many customers on a regular basis.” Chris started his first business aged 13 and has always has a keen interest in enterprise. He studied Rural Enterprise and Land Management, and graduated with a First Class Honours degree in 2011. As part of his degree, Chris undertook a dissertation on the feasibility of installing a biomass district heating scheme, and has developed a specialist interest in biomass schemes. As a result EWF now offers consultancy on biomass installations, in particular district heating schemes. As they state on their website, “Our core value is to provide top quality products to our customers in a friendly and efficient

EDINBURGH WOOD FUEL

manner” so they will be very happy to help you with any questions relating to your order and what products are best for your stove or fire. Obviously, customers need to ensure they comply with relevant legislation including the Clean Air Act 1993. INTERVIEW

Suzanne Green interviews Steve Packwood of “the world’s largest floating bookshop” Currie resident Steve Packwood is Partner Development Manager for OM Ships. Operation Mobilisation (OM) is an international Christian charity working in 110 different countries, and Steve is one of its 6,000 workers. He is married to Heather, a nurse, and they have two children: Liam (15) and Kara (13). Steve loves his job, which involves keeping people up to date about the work of Logos Hope, the world’s largest floating bookshop. With 5,000 educational and Christianity-related titles on-board, the ship’s purpose is to “bring knowledge, help and hope to the people of the world”. “We send a team to the country a few months before we arrive,” Steve comments, “and work with local churches to assess the needs in the area and discuss what we can offer. For many people, it will be the first time they have ever been on a ship. We have an entire deck that we open up to visitors. There we show them a film about Logos Hope and what we do.” Steve explains that the ship’s team members work with local communities, offering English language classes, HIV and AIDS seminars and schools programmes. They partner with smaller organisations in building projects, doing basic things such as putting a new roof on a school.

Following Typhoon Haiyan, they sent teams to the Philippines to help with rebuilding. “We keep a large supply of water filters on-board,” says Steve, “to give to people who don’t have access to clean water. We also test eyes – we have a supply of new spectacles in different prescriptions that we give away. And we do on-shore medical and dental clinics.” In representing this work to churches, organisations and individuals in the UK Steve knows what he is talking about. He has lived on ships a total of eight years, three with his family. Steve’s roles have included Bookshop Manager and Corporate Services Director, and Heather was ship’s nurse. Liam and Kara went to school on-board, ensuring they will always have unique adventures to relate to their friends! Once, when the ship was sailing from Bermuda to Antigua, a world champion unicyclist was on-board. He did a show for the ship’s crew on the top deck and asked for a volunteer. Liam obliged. “I wonder if anyone else has ever done this,” says Steve. “Liam sat on a unicyclist’s shoulders during a performance on a ship at sea!” Kara’s adventures have included being “kissed” by a sting ray in Antigua! Her leg wasn’t sore but there was quite a mark. Currently the ship is in Singapore, having old generators and the electrical switchboard replaced. Most of the crew (400 people from 60 nationalities) are currently promoting the work in other countries. In April 2015 Logos Hope will sail to Asia, then to the Indian Ocean islands and on to Africa. “Hopefully by mid 2016 we will be able to go to West Africa,” says Steve, “but this depends on the Ebola situation.” Liam Packwood and world champion unicyclist

Smart Tech Vehicle Solutions Dale Purdie of Smart Tech Vehicles Solutions in East Calder is a man with a mission – to do the best bodywork repair on your vehicle at the lowest price. And coming from a guy who is an Aston Martin approved repairer with fourteen years’ experience under his belt, you can have some confidence that he knows what he’s talking about. “We use only genuine manufacturer parts and paints, ensuring the best quality,” he explains, “and we compete on price with a lifetime guarantee.” In addition, Smart Tech offers a free valet with every paint job, and try to arrange the job at the most convenient time for the customer. “A lot of our work is for lease returns, and we have a steady flow of insurance work – we’re an insurance approved bodyshop – as well as private and fleet customers.” They can also do alloy wheel refurbishment work. Dale started his career at Renault in Sighthill where he served his first apprenticeship, and has worked since at various bodyshops, including a spell down south where he trained to be a senior master technician and got his Aston Martin approval. (“Not that we get many of them through the workshop here in East Calder! I’ve had a Bentley in though...”).

38 konect

Eighteen months ago he decided it was time for him to set up in business as he wanted to do things his own way, and the site he found at Camps Industrial Site in East Calder is ideal, as he is local (Mid Calder) so it was ideally placed for him. It is easy for customers to get to and there is a spacious car park. With help from the Princes Trust, and thanks to some fleet contracts via Dale’s own network of existing customers, Smart Tech got off to a busy start. “The Princes Trust advisor was invaluable for helping me sort the administration side of the business,” says Dale. Smart Tech has steadily grown since then through repeat customers and word of mouth recommendations from happy customers. Dale does all the work himself currently, but with an increasing workload he’s at the point where he is looking to expand and take on another technician. So whatever vehicle you have and whatever bodywork it needs, give Dale a call – you’ll be putting your vehicle in the hands of a very experienced repairer, and with a free valet with every job and 10% off for Konect readers (using the advert opposite), you can’t go wrong. Reduce your stress levels with a properly planned new kitchen by Ekco How was it…you know, the last big meal that you cooked for guests? Was it a resounding success or did the dog even refuse to touch the leftover roast? There are steps you can take to prevent a recurring disaster and reduce stress levels next time around. Number one on the list has to be a new or revamped kitchen. Unless you’re the miracle chef, Rachel Khoo who can cook a three course meal on a two-ringed camping stove in her tiny Parisian flat you’ll need a touch more space to lay out your resting roast and accompanying veg. Then there’s the appliances to think of, so before you go rushing off all excited and ordering yourself a new kitchen here are some things you should consider:

Is your new kitchen for effect only or will it be well used for developing your culinary skills? There’s the story about the man who hid his wife’s birthday presents in the oven because it was the only place she wouldn’t look! If your kitchen is for effect only you can put what you like in it but if it’s to be a place of creativity and industry then only buy what you need and have it designed around the person who uses it most If you happen to be the Head Chef as well as KP in your home then stand in your existing kitchen with your eyes closed and imagine one or two typical meals you enjoy cooking. Where do you keep your key ingredients and can you lay your hands on them without thinking? Where is your hob in relation to your oven? What workspace do you have for food prep and for serving up? It’s important that you relay these thoughts to your kitchen designer and planner as a good one will really help you to make the most of the footprint you have to play with What was the last small appliance you bought? Was it a cupcake maker

which is now gathering dust on top of one of your wall cupboards? Every appliance you buy should have a regular purpose based on the type of food you love to cook. As a starter for ten, a good quality food processor is a must for every budding chef Do you have adequate refrigeration and freezing space? How good is your oven and will you be able to give it a few trial runs before any big event to make sure it can cope? Reducing stress levels when making any big dinner depends on pre-planning, plenty of space to store your chilled foods (and part-cooked foods such as potatoes before roasting), good quality appliances from trusted brands, and enough workspace to adequately prepare and serve.

Once you have everything else in place making the actual meal itself is pretty straightforward. For advice on planning a new kitchen why not contact EKCO, Edinburgh’s premier kitchen

Albyn Veterinary Centre A version of laser treatment therapy used by sports teams and athletes is now available for pets. Albyn Veterinary Practice in Broxburn is one of a very few practices in Scotland (and the only one in West Lothian) to have invested in a laser machine to offer this treatment. The benefits of laser light therapy are subject to much research due to its potential for promoting healing and pain reduction, and this is making its way into veterinary medicine as well as human medicine. So, keen to offer a range of treatment options to their customers, Albyn Vets acquired a laser treatment machine in November. They have been treating a wide range of injuries and ailments with it and so far the feedback has been very positive. “Every case is different so it’s impossible to say exactly whether the laser treatment could completely replace an existing treatment plan” explains practice-owner Kathryn. “But it can help with a wide range of conditions including reducing swelling, reducing pain and speeding the healing process.” For example, a treatment along the incision immediately after surgery can significantly reduce healing time. Acute conditions such as skin wounds, bites, allergies, dermatitis, burns and

42 konect

sprains and fractures will benefit both in terms of healing and pain relief; and chronic conditions such as periodontal disease, degenerative joint disease or arthritis can be treated to help with pain management. Older pets who have aches and pains or decreased mobility can benefit from a course of laser therapy. In fact any pet in pain or discomfort is a candidate, and the vets at Albyn Vets will be delighted to advise and recommend the best treatment for your pet’s condition. One of the first candidates was Kathryn’s own dog who had laser treatment for a toe injury and responded very well. Unlike conventional drugs, laser light treatment is free from any side-effects – your pet just feels a gentle warmth over the area treated (they can’t tell us, of course, but that is what human patients describe!) and it takes just a few minutes. It can be applied without touching the painful area so is ideal for very sensitive tissues. The light energy delivered by the laser interacts with the cells, increasing blood flow and promoting healing. If you are interested in trying this new treatment, please contact Albyn Vets on 01506 852498 for more information. They are offering £5 off an initial treatment for readers with the advert opposite.

LOCAL WALK

by Karen Murray

An Orienteering Walk I have decided on something a little different for the walk this month, based on an interesting jaunt I took as a parent-helper on a Duke of Edinburgh orienteering trip recently. The participants were going to a park in Edinburgh to practice their orienteering skills (and boy, did they need practice!). I had assumed they would just be working their way around the park following a map and I intended to leave them to it and do my own thing, blissfully unaware that the park to which we were heading was set up specifically for orienteering. You, dear readers, may be far more astute than I and realise that such places exist; I, however, was pleasantly surprised and decided to follow the kids round. The park is Braidburn Valley Park, near Greenbank Crescent in Edinburgh. The day was exceptionally cold and icy, so it was gloves, hats and scarves all round and brisk walking to keep warm. The aim of orienteering is to navigate in sequence around a course of control points in a natural setting. The control points are marked on an orienteering map. The rules say you can run, jog or walk. Guess which option we went for? The challenge is to decide the best route to complete

the course in the quickest time. In this instance, the leader put different groups at different start points with the aim of navigating around all 21 control points. If you’re planning on having a go at this as a way of adding interest to a walk you probably want to start at the beginning near the main entrance to the Park at Greenbank Crescent.

The terrain is not particularly challenging in the park - though it is quite steep - which makes it a good place to have a first go at orienteering. The points are orange and white plaques mounted on low wooden posts with a number at the top lefthand side and two initials at the bottom right. You can download maps from the park website at http:// www.braidburnvalleypark.org.uk/ and jumble up the numbers to set any route you like. As the groups go round, they should use the side of the map to write down the sequence of initials against each number to make sure that everyone follows the route in the right order and there is no cheating! I think plenty of cheating took place on our little orienteering outing, but plenty of fun was had too. I took more time to wander around the route and note the scenery, letting the kids lead the way and I noted what a beautiful park Braidburn Valley Park is. Set in a hollow on the outskirts of Edinburgh, it is really a little oasis of rural life in a busy city.

The views from the top edge of the park are stunning, looking across at the castle and over the Forth and the park itself is beautiful. It happened to be a cold, clear, crisp, sunny day and the low sun shining through bare trees and turning the frost to glitter was particularly appealing to me. I suspect that come spring, the delights will be more to behold. There is an avenue of cherry trees that in blossom will be gorgeous. They were planted in the shape of the Guide Trefoil by 5,000 Girl Guides, Brownies and Rangers (what we now call Senior Guides) in 1935, to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary.

And it is not just this avenue of trees, but all the pathways have been thoughtfully designed, with several footbridges over the river, view points and interpretations notices telling you what wildlife can be seen and what views you can see. I also noticed at one of rest stops, a way-marking sign pointing out the new Robert Louis Stevenson Way, which starts at the north end of Braidburn Valley Park.

When I have some more time (and no kids to supervise) I will need to walk it. The other longer route to try is the East-West option which connects the park to Liberton by way of the track through the Hermitage of Braid following the Braid Burn. With more time and sturdier boots, you could take the route over the top of the Braid Hills, which connects the park via Riselaw Avenue and Comiston Springs Road. Plenty of options for other days. The park is not huge, but as the sides are steep it’s a fairly energetic hike. Using the orienteering markers made for a more interesting and varied walk, adding an extra element to simply getting fresh air and exercise. If you’re interested in finding out more about orienteering in Edinburgh there are two local clubs, the Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club and Interlopers Club. There are also several other permanent orienteering areas on the outskirts of Edinburgh if you get the bug.

The ‘way’ leads you as close to Stevenson’s original route as possible, to his family home in Swanston nestling in the Pentlands. This route will become part of Edinburgh’s core path network, allowing walkers, cyclists and riders the opportunity to use the Park as a key green space connecting the city centre to the surrounding countryside.

How to get there: The park is located approximately one mile south of Morningside Junction off the A702 (at Comiston Road/Pentland Terrace) konect 47

FUNDRAISING

“I Need Your Help!” Amee Hood is an East Calder resident with a penchant for travel. This year her travel is a fund-raising trip for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society. She tells Konect why : “On March 7th I will be heading to Tanzania to climb mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for NRAS (National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society). My mum has suffered from Rheumatoid Arthiritis for many years. She has been given many medications to slow down the progression of the disease and pain but unfortunately her body becomes immune and they eventually stop working. When this happens each day it’s a struggle to put one foot in front of the other or even to hold a cup of tea.

This trip is purely funded by myself. I’m travelling with no friends or family and the only support I will have is that of the guides that the travel agents have organised, and the thoughts of the people that are supporting the cause back home.... I would like all the support from the local community! Please visit my justgiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/Amee-Hood1

The money I raise will be put towards a NRAS group in Scotland to support people suffering from this disease and their families who take on caring roles and have to come to terms with the fact that the person they love is now unable to do many things.

RECIPE AND FOOD NOTES

by Anne Pinkerton

Soups - Scottish Winter Staple In Scotland we have a grand tradition of soup making. Think of Partan Brae, Cock a Leekie , Cullen Skink and Scotch Broth. All are made from local ingredients and are nearly a meal in themselves. At this time of year it is good to eat comforting food. Combine the two ideas and you have traditional way of feeding the family. One of the best loved soups is leek and potato, made from… leeks and potatoes, onion, salt, pepper, milk and water. Soup need not be dull and if you use your imagination you can almost always make a great meal from what is in the fridge. The method is usually the same as in these two following recipes and it only takes about half an hour.

Fridge soup 1 onion; chopped 2 carrots; grated 1 medium potato; grated 1 leek; sliced in very fine circles 100g red lentils or a drained tin of beans. Not baked-beans, but any other sort you enjoy. If you have any left-over cooked meat or other veg, eg peas, cabbage, pepper cut them finely and use. Rice or pasta can be added. Grated cheese for a topping is good. Start by frying the onion in a little butter half and half with oil. Add the carrot, potato and leek. Cook gently for 5 minutes to soften. If you have them add the lentils and mix everything well. Add 1 pint water or stock. Cover the pan and cook slowly for 15 minutes. Check that the lentils are cooked and see if the soup is too thick. Add more water if needed. At this point add the extra “finds” from the fridge. Cook at a gentle boil till all the soup is really hot. About 5 minutes more. Season with salt, pepper, a dash of Tabasco or a teaspoonful of Marmite.

Jamie’s Super Soup From an Australian friend, this soup in made interesting by the addition of creamed coconut and a little chili and fresh ginger. A collection of any vegetables you like, but it should include onion, garlic and a large aubergine. Courgette, neep, tomato, pepper, parsnip or carrot can be included. Small can coconut milk or milk made with 1/3 of a packet creamed coconut and ½ pint water. 2 inch root ginger peeled and crushed. 4-6 cloves garlic, crushed. Cumin, cloves chilli flakes Fresh coriander Fry the chopped onion in olive oil till golden. Add the diced aubergine and a little more oil and fry till collapsing. Add all the other veg you chose and cook till tender. Add the ginger, coconut milk garlic and seasoning. Heat through. Add 1 pint water and cook together for 10 minutes more. Use a wand blender or liquidizer to blitz the soup to a smooth texture. Taste, and correct seasoning. Perhaps add a little soya sauce. Bring back to the boil. Serve garnished with a little plain yogurt and chopped coriander. Lots of bread and a salad will make this a meal give it a go.
