Hello neighbours It’s definitely the count-down to summer, and June seems to be a good time to think about gardens – we’ve been learning this month about a special garden planted not far from here, in Livingston at the site of Eliburn’s Peel Park around 350 years ago. And anyone with an interest in the healing power of plants will be interested to read that at that time doctors were influential in botany as well as in medicine, see the feature article on pages 8-9. I was pleased this month to be asked by Gary Paterson of East Calder to publish an update on his remarkable 9000km charity cycle ride around Europe. He completed the trek and got home in one piece, but he still has a way to go to meet his fundraising target, so please read his article on page 30 and try to support the causes he is highlighting. Congratulations to Terry Milligan who won the crossword competition in the last issue.

This month, the Black Bull Inn in Mid Calder is offering the chance to win a £25 voucher to spend in the pub. I visited the Black Bull Inn this month to learn a bit more about it, and was very impressed - run by local people working hard and going the extra mile for their customers, read their feature on page 38. And of course it’s gala month – all our local galas take place this month, so a big well done to the hard-working committees who organise them and to all the other volunteers and helpers. The Laird O’ Livingston’s Legacy By Yvonne MacMillan
E
liburn South’s Peel Park was once the location of the Laird O’ Livingston’s physic garden. Patrick Murray (1634 – 1671) had a passion for collecting and growing plants. Described as “one of the most promising men of science of his time”, Murray’s physic garden in the grounds of his home at Livingston Peel stocked 1,000 species of plants, and when he died this invaluable collection became the foundation for today’s Edinburgh Botanic Gardens. Physic gardens were European medieval medicinal gardens where medicine, botany and gardening inter-linked and doctors were as well known and influential in botany as medicine. Botanic gardens followed physic gardens when whole continents began to be discovered and shiploads of new species were brought back to Europe for scientific interest. A botanical pioneer and “famous for collecting seeds, plants and exotica”, Patrick Murray was a good friend of Robert Sibbald (1641 – 1722) and Andrew Balfour (1630 – 1694), two Scottish physicians and botanists who went on to found the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. The garden at Livingston inspired them to start a medical garden in Edinburgh – a place where supplies of fresh plants and herbs for medical prescriptions were on hand and medical students would study botany. Sibbald and Balfour wrote an official list for the medical profession of acceptable drugs and how to make them (The Pharmacopoeia, published 29 years later in 1699), a great advance in regulating medical care in the 17th century. Work on the first physic garden for physicians in Edinburgh began in 1670. The following year, Patrick Murray, Laird O’ Livingston, died of a fever at the age of 35 in Avignon, France, whilst on a two year-long trip to France and Italy. Murray had bequeathed his precious plants to Andrew Balfour and the massive task of digging up and transplanting the collection
got underway. Plants were carefully and painstakingly moved, cartload by cartload, to a rented 40ft x 40ft allotment in St Anne’s Yards, in the grounds of the Palace of Holyrood House - the site of today’s public car park for the Palace and the Scottish Parliament. Five years later with the garden flourishing, the plants were uprooted again, to a bigger plot of land leased from the Town Council - next to where platform 11 in Waverley Station stands today (a commemorative plaque marks the spot). A final move in the early 1820s to Inverleith Row, a change of name to Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and the journey of Murray’s plants was complete. The Murray family seat at Livingston Peel was a fortified stone tower on a large, earthen mound and surrounded by a moat built in 1124 by de Leving, a Flemish nobleman invited to Scotland by King David 1.* In return for military service to the king, de Leving was given a grant of land. Other more humble dwellings sprang up around the tower with the people attracted by work and its protection. The settlement became known as Leving’s toun, then as time passed this name became Livingston. A street sign near the entrance to Peel Park holds on to the old spelling - Leving Place – a connection with the past. Originally from Elibank in Peebles-shire, the Murray family acquired Livingston Peel and surrounding lands in 1512. Livingston was a huge but sparsely populated parish (around 2,000 inhabitants), stretching 10 miles

from Dechmont in the east to Fauldhouse in the west. Mainly, it was rough, open countryside, dotted with small patches of cultivated land and large areas of wet moorland like Drumshoreland, Easter Inch, Whitburn and Fauldhouse moors. In 1995, Livingston Development Corporation (LDC) commemorated Patrick Murray’s contribution to the natural science of botany by recreating a physic garden in Peel Park, the site of Murray’s original garden. At the heart of the LDC’s garden, an information panel and diagram (sadly now hard to read) shows the layout of different beds – medicinal plants of 1670, culinary herbs of 1670, medicinal plants used from 1670 to the present day – although now, ivy swamps the other plants. Box and yew hedging give structure, dividing the beds and bordering paths and other larger, open spaces, tempting you to explore. Rows of lollipop-like trees line ramrod-straight walkways leading off in all directions like the points of a compass and give the garden an open, spacious feeling. The only survivors from the old estate are the mature trees. About 30 paces from the information point, the LDC built a circular grass mound surrounded by a cobblestone moat, a wooden bridge and 16 steps take you to the top. This simple structure represents the original Livingston Peel. Although Patrick Murray lived in the Peel, his nephew who inherited the estate built a substantial
Plant collectors risked life and limb on their quests for new species. Like Murray, they had a thirst for knowledge and were driven by a need to explore nature and share their discoveries - our landscapes were shaped by their efforts. *Historians have differing opinions on the origin of the name Livingston, and the identity of de Leving himself. The information here is just one of several possible explanations. Information from West Lothian Local History Library and The Sibbald Physic Garden by Dr M A Eastwood

ou may have noticed a distinctive blue van in the area recently... it’s a new gardening business run by Dan Greaves of Kirknewton. “I’ve always enjoyed garden construction and had experience of working in my father’s carpentry business, building pergolas, fencing and decking. I also spent time working with a friend who does landscape gardening.” Wanting a career change after years of managing a chain of clothing stores, Dan decided to set up his own gardening business at the end of 2011. He has thrown his considerable energy and creativity into it - he loves the creative aspect of garden design and construction, but also does general maintenance including grass cutting, clearing and borders. He brings his years of experience in management to bear – someone who knows how to be organised and get things done is just what you want whether you’ve got a large garden project on or want a regular maintenance gardener.

Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham

handi observed that whenever we point a finger at someone there are three pointing straight back at us! Try it and see…
This reminds me of a story I once read about a little boy who asked his mother if he could stay at a friend’s house one night. His mother said no because he had school the next day. In floods of tears, the little boy ran out of the house and into the mountains shouting at the top of his voice “I hate you!” To his horror he heard “I hate you!” coming out from the mountains. In shock, he ran back to his mother and pleaded with her “Come quickly mum, there’s a nasty little boy in the mountains!” His mother followed him into the
mountains and asked her son where the nasty little boy was. “I don’t know” he answered, “but listen. ‘I hate you!’” he shouted again and sure enough “I hate you!” came right back. “See mum, what did I tell you?” His mother smiled and asked him to shout “‘I love you!” Her son shrugged his shoulders puzzled at her request, but did it anyway. “I love you!” he shouted, and to his surprise “I love you!” came right back at him. His mother smiled and said “See, there’s a sweet little boy in the mountains too!” Have a great day! Jackie works in Xcite Sports Centre, East Calder as a Life Coach and Beauty Therapist. Vet’s Tip:
How to Train Your Own Pudsey
A
nyone watching Britain’s Got Talent will have been impressed at how well trained and happy Pudsey the dog was during his doggy dancing routines. No dog trained with force could have achieved this amazing feat. Pudsey has been trained with kindness and rewards, so if you want your dog to be like Pudsey you should click and treat not yell and beat! It can be hard to know the best way to train your dog so here are some simple facts: Many people believe they need to be the pack leader to have a well behaved dog. The dominance myth has actually been disproven for over 20 years. The infamous Cesar Milan has a huge following yet any qualified trainer or behaviourist will frown when hearing his name! Several countries have banned his tour and will not broadcast his show. Modern science tells us that rewards are more effective than punishment. Would you rather be paid to go to work every day or
do it to avoid being yelled at all the time? I know what would motivate me more! Dogs treated with harsh methods are more likely to develop behaviour problems such as aggression. Bear in mind that the top reason for dogs to be euthanised is due to a behaviour problem and dogs that go to puppy classes are far less likely to be rehomed. The dog training industry is unregulated meaning that anyone can call themselves a trainer or behaviourist without having qualifications or knowledge. In fact many trainers use methods which break animal welfare laws. With half a million pounds and the admiration of Simon Cowell on offer perhaps it’s time to get out the treats and have fun with your dog?! Karen Murray sneaks some exercise on a sunny afternoon
A
s many of you may be aware I am a woman with perhaps more to do than there are hours in the day, but as they say if you want something done ask a busy person. That being said, I still like to fit in a walk when and if I can - I need it for the exercise, mental space and also because, fool that I am I signed up for the Race for Life, so getting a little fitter would be handy! I have a number of walking routes up my sleeve that I can often incorporate into the day if luck is on my side, and when out and about for work recently I had a spare half hour that coincided with a rare sunny afternoon. It’s a simple little walk but very pretty on a sunny day. Park the car in Hermiston Village and walk along Gogar Station Road away from the main A71 roundabout and over the bridge that goes over the canal. There are steps down to the canal path, signed to Ratho one way and to the City Centre the other. It is also cycle path 754, so watch out for cyclists!
Head toward Ratho and of course if you have all the time in the world, you can simply keep on walking and you’ll reach Ratho and ultimately the Falkirk Wheel. However, for this walk you follow the canal path until the next exit, enjoying the flora and fauna along the way as well as a little history and a bit of science! On one of the bridges you will see a note saying ‘Near this spot John Scott Russell discovered the solitary wave in August 1834’. What you may well wonder is a solitary wave? Google to the rescue - the young Scottish engineer named in the plaque was conducting experiments on the canal to determine the most efficient design for canal boats and made a remarkable scientific discovery, which he called ‘the wave of transition’. He noticed that when the boat drawn by horses suddenly stopped, the mass of water in the channel which had been put in motion did not. It rolled forward in the form of ‘a large solitary elevation’ and continued along the course of the canal. History and science aside, coming up from the canal at the next exit brings you onto Hermiston House Road, a single track road that bends and twists between the A71 and Gogarbank. Turn right and follow the road to Gogarbank. It is usually fairly quiet but

do be aware of potential traffic and they don’t always expect walkers! At the T-junction, take a right again, walking along Gogarbank Road- same rules apply. You will see the Forth Rail Bridge if you look to the left and get some lovely views across the oil seed rape fields of yellow over to Fife. You will also walk past the Suntrap Garden, a hidden gem of a garden well worth a visit if you’re passing during opening times and have some time to spare.

Suntrap Garden is open Tuesday s and Fridays 10.30am to 2.30pm, and weekends 12pm – 4pm. The re is an honesty box for a £3 admissio n (National Trust members go free ).
Once more at the next T-junction it is another right and onto Gogar Station Road. This will bring you back to bridge over the canal completing the circle. I hopped back in my car and continued my workday, secretly wishing I had a spare couple of hours to walk the canal route into the city centre on such a lovely afternoon. Maybe next time?

Help the miles add up By Gary Paterson
L
ast August Konect published an article about a charity cycle I was about to embark on. This wasn’t just a one day cycle, but a six month trek through Europe. It was just me, my bike and the clothes and equipment I could fit on the bike. It pleases me to say I’ve completed the trek and arrived back into East Calder after cycling 9,000km through 20 countries. I may have completed one tough and rewarding adventure, but what I haven’t completed is the fundraising for the charities I’m supporting. I truly believe in the great work these charities do - in fact sometimes in the pouring rain, thousands of miles from home in the countryside of some far off country it helped keep me going.
The charities I’m fundraising for are: Forever Angels : an orphanage/baby home www.foreverangels.org Cheka Sana : a street children centre www.chekasanachildrenstrust.com Bridge 2 Aid : a dental and development charity www.bridge2aid.org These charities help the people of Tanzania, a country where I worked from 2008 to 2010. I’ve personally seen the good work they do in helping people live with hope, dignity and a chance of a better future. The money raised will help pay for, among other things, education, malaria treatment and food. Visiting the websites you’ll see the huge work they do to make a big difference and that they’re all UK registered. Also being a local I wanted to help out Cyrenians Farm, a community enterprise just outside Kirknewton which helps young vulnerable people become more confident and self reliant. www.cyreniansfarm.org.uk My trip wasn’t rigidly planned. This made it frightening in some regards, but gave me a lot of freedom. “Freedom” is also another way of saying being occasionally lost! But getting lost sometimes resulted in unexpected surprises. In Montenegro it led to tranquillity and breathtaking views
30
in the mountains; in Switzerland it meant I stumbled upon the UEFA headquarters and got to meet Andy Roxburgh, an exScotland manager. I have so many stories and memories from this trek which might one day make it to a book. It’s strange now to think that I actually made it to the end especially considering how the first day turned out. It was an inauspicious start - barely out of Edinburgh I got a puncture, there was torrential rain and to make matters worse a tree had fallen and blocked the cycle path to the Forth Bridge. I pushed my bike across the bridge in the pouring rain. Three months in, my bike was stolen and I faced the unenviable prospect of flying home. Against the odds the Italian police found my bike and belongings. There I was surrounded by a group of curious onlookers who were moved to have a charity whip round. Another time, German volunteer firefighters came to my rescue and with a community effort helped me to replace and repair a damaged wheel. They refused to let me go until the bicycle was running not just sufficiently to get me to the next town, but with German efficiency! These and other lovely and supportive people I met on the trip are what made the trip so special for me, even though sometimes we didn’t speak the same language. I hope you can be supportive too by sponsoring me at my website www.cycle4africa.co.uk or by texting GARY57 £5 to 70070. Here, along with donating, you can see photos and read about all my adventures. Thank you.

West Calder’s Gunpowder Plot
C
amilty Forest is a wild and scenic small forest that lies both sides of the A70, between Harperrig and West Calder. As you wander through these quiet woods near Harburn, it’s hard to imagine that this peaceful spot, nestled in a low-lying area next to Camilty water, used to be a busy and siginificant gunpowder works, with employees and vehicles coming and going - not to mention frequent explosions! Camilty Gunpowder Works supplied the coal and shale mining industries with gunpowder from around 1890 to 1930. Shale in particular is very hard, too hard to be mined with picks, so gunpowder was essential. The Camilty works was originally owned by the Midlothian Gunpowder Company, and the site changed hands several times over the years, eventually ending up in the hands of ICI until being shut down in 1930. Incredibly, miners had to purchase their own gunpowder - the mining companies didn’t supply it - and it was sold over the counter in West Calder Co-op, carried home in a bag and stored as often as not under the bed! It was the miner’s wife’s task to fill her man’s powder tin each morning with enough powder for his shift. The site was converted from an old corn mill, and was ideally suited for a gunpowder works for several reasons: its isolated position meant that there was no settlement nearby to be harmed by explosions; the steep banks would absorb the force of explosions and provide a higher area for office buildings; and Camilty Water was close by in case of fire. The company also built six houses for employees at Park View, but other employees had to walk from West Calder. Explosions were not unusual and people in the area were used to hearing them. 36

It was not unlike living in an earthquake zone in some ways! An explosion in June 1909, for example, shook furniture and windows in West Calder, and the concussion was felt as far away as Carstairs in the West and Currie in the East. There was just one fatal accident, in 1921, where two employees lost their lives in an explosion. that One of the company rules was turn unt acco no on t mus ‘‘the men t up their trousers at the foot.’’ Dus , and or grit could gather in turn ups an just a tiny amount could trigger explosion.
The ingredients for the gunpower were mixed and ground in ‘‘danger buildings’’ - a series of bays with walls 2ft thick, surrounded by earthen mounds as high as the eaves and with flimsy wooden roofs, so that any explosion would be contained within one compartment and the roof blown out. Remains of various works buildings can be seen at the site today. All information for this article is taken from the book ‘‘Camilty Gunpower Works’’ by Sybil Cavanagh, published by the West Lothian Local History Library. The book contains many more details and pictures, and copies are available for £2 from the library. Article first appeared in Konect Directory West Calder Dec 2009

Black Bull Inn, Mid Calder “
D
oing it properly and giving the best service possible” is how Donald McLauchlan of the Black Bull Inn in Mid Calder describes his business approach to me. Donald has been running the Black Bull Inn for nearly three years now, and tells me he hopes to be doing it for many years to come. “We’re well settled in Mid Calder and get involved as much as possible in community life.” The Black Bull Inn is a major sponsor of Mid Calder Gala, as well as of Mid Calder United football team, while several other local clubs and fundraising events benefit from the hospitality and facilities at the pub. Donald has been working hard since taking over to transform the food as well as gradually redecorating and improving the bars, function room and dining area. But the ambience that attracted him to the Black Bull Inn in the first place has not changed. It is a friendly, welcoming pub with a public bar as well as the main bar and dining area. There’s a good atmosphere in the evenings when locals young and old mingle with visitors. Families are welcome for dining, and all food is cooked from scratch on the premises, using locally sourced fresh ingredients as much as possible. Donald and head chef Michael have spent time, for example, perfecting their steak pie which is made from premium cuts of Campbell’s meat. Many items on the menu are cooked to order. Friday and Saturday nights are usually very busy for meals so be sure you call ahead to book a table to avoid disappointment. Head Chef Michael likes to experiment with a variety of food to see what customers prefer. “I’ve
38
served kangaroo steaks, venison burgers, curries from all over the world.” The word soon gets around – the last pot of Malaysian curry sauce he made was all gone within 24 hours! And his soups are legendary. “I believe there are enough varieties of soups in the world that we don’t need to repeat the same one within a month!” he says. His dessert speciality is cheesecake and, as with the soups, variety is the watchword. The week I was there they were offering a cranachan cheesecake (with raspberries, whisky and toasted oats); last month their Bailey’s cheesecake was a hit. The function room at the Black Bull Inn is well used by local groups and private parties of all sorts. Room hire is free if the Black Bull Inn is providing the catering – which Donald prefers to do so that he can be sure that the quality is up to scratch. Catering packages are available from £4.95 per head for christenings, funerals etc including tea and coffee, up to around £9.95 per head for full buffet. They can help you plan your event and advise you on your menu according to your budget and their own experience of event catering. If that wasn’t enough there is an outdoors dining area. Not only are dogs welcome in outdoor eating area but also in the public bar as walkers often drop in for refreshments. So if we get some warm sunny evenings this summer make sure you book in for an al fresco meal at the Black Bull Inn in their outdoors dining area. And if the rain continues, call in for one of Head Chef Michael’s legendary soups!

June Recipe and Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton
F
“
laming June”, or so the saying goes! I think this has more to do with summer in England than for us a bit north of Potter’s Bar. To us in Scotland June is often the kindest month and with luck we can enjoy the wonderful very long days, flowers and food from the garden or allotment. Cleaver gardeners may have their first new potatoes and broad beans, herbs will be well up and there are elderflowers, sorrel and garlic leaves we can harvest from the wild.
This may all be a bit of a dream when you have a family to feed, not enough time and less in the budget than you hoped. There are still ways to make your food feel summery and leave you with to time to enjoy the long days and good weather if we get any. Pasta with cream and new vegetables Cook which ever shape of pasta you most enjoy and when it is ready have the following ready to add : A dash of olive oil 1 egg beaten into ¼ pint double or whipping cream Cooked asparagus chopped or new tiny broad beans or fresh peas just cooked. A rasher or 2 of thin crisp cooked bacon per person, broken up Salt and a good grinding of black pepper Chopped chives or mint or sorrel leaves. Chose the herb which will go best with the veg you are eating. eg. mint with peas. At the last moment add the veg, oil, herbs, bacon and then the cream and egg to the hot, drained pasta. Give it a quick mix to coat the pasta with the rest of the ingredients and there you are…a quick summer meal making expensive ingredients go further and still tasting good.
June is often a month people plan for outside events, galas and weddings. Summer celebration food is a British strength. Think of cold, decorated poached Scottish salmon, bowls of strawberries and meringues and puddings decorated with crystallized flowers or fruit. Rare roast beef sliced thin with tiny new potatoes and mint, followed by stewed apricots and cream are all simple and delicious.

Greek Courgette Fritters 2 large or 3 smaller courgettes, grated 150gm Greek Feta cheese, crumbled. Danish Feta is less strong tasting, I prefer the Greek original. Chopped mint leaves 2 eggs beaten Salt and pepper and a little ground coriander if liked. Plain flour Oil for frying In a bowl, mix all (except the oil) ingredients together. You will have a sloppy looking mess! A little at a time, mix in plain flour to take up the liquid and make a thick dropping

consistency. This might take 100gm or a little more flour. Heat the oil in a frying pan till it is just smoking - any hotter and the fritters will burn, too cold and they will be oily. Drop pudding-spoonfuls of mixture into the pan and cook till brown and crisp, turn the fritters and cook the other side. Keep the fritters hot on a dish with kitchen paper to absorb any excess oil. Cook in batches till all the mixture is used up. Serve with a tomato salad and some black olives and crusty bread. Flowers in food There are several flowers which are good to eat and when added to salads or as decoration to puddings give the dish a summery look. The Cyrenians grow salads on their holding at Humbie near Kirknewton, and include nasturtiums, snapdragon, violas, borage, chive flowers and pot marigolds in their salad mix. They sell them to the best restaurants in Edinburgh. Why not try them yourself? For fun you can crystallize rose petals with egg white and caster sugar and use them on cakes. Both violets and roses can be found in the cake decorating shelves of the super-market. Elderflower cordial On a dry day pick about 10 big heads of elderflowers. If you can, take them home quickly or keep them in a paper bag till you are there. This is because the dry flowers carry the yeast which will give the syrup a genuine flowery taste. If the flowers are wet they will make an unpleasant flavoured brew. Put the elderflower heads in a heat proof bowl. Slowly dissolve 450gm of sugar in ¾ pint of water. When this is done bring the syrup to the boil and then pour it over the elderflower heads. Cover with a clean cloth and set aside to go cold. Leave for a day to steep. Bottle in a screw topped jar and keep in the fridge. This can be diluted to taste with fizzy water, used to make elderflower water ice or be added to the fruit when cooking gooseberries. he Silver Saints Cheerleading Dance Squad, pictured with their coach Gillian Farrell, proved yet again to be West Lothian’s No.1. The Scotcheer Open National Competition was held at Glasgow SECC on 7th and 8th April. The Silver Saints from East Calder walked confidently onto the floor, danced a highly choreographed 2 minute 30 second routine and walked away with a First Place trophy for their Senior Squad. But not only that, the Silver Saints Junior Team also took 1st Place with their perfectly performed routine also. The Youth team proudly walked away with a 3rd Place, which was a fantastic result showing that they are going from strength to strength.
routine. The Silver Saints Juniors Squad was awarded an incredible 5th place out of 15 which was reported to be the toughest section in the competition that day, but not only that it was their first time in entering this section of dance. The Silver Saint Adult Squad which includes coaches Gillian Farrell, Elaine Mclean and Dawn Adams were also awarded 1st Place on Saturday for their routine and 2nd Place on Sunday for their Pom dance routine. There is also a Silver Saints ‘Mini’ Cheerleading Squad from Glasgow who took a wonderful 5th Place; these toddlers have shown they have true Silver Saints quality. June Jubilee Books It’s Jubilee month! Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and an all-star line up of poets come together to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Through a series of specially commissioned poems, ‘Jubilee Lines’ offers a unique portrayal of the country and times in which we have lived since 1953, culminating in an essential portrait of today: the way we speak, the way we chronicle, the way we love and fight, the way we honour and remember. For the kids there is a very special Ladybird souvenir edition to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Read about her early childhood, coronation, family life, and the way she has shaped the modern monarchy over the last sixty years. There are also fascinating facts about the number of Prime Ministers and leaders she’s known, all the countries visited, her official portraits and more! There is also ‘Elizabeth the Jubilee Fairy’ who is in charge of making every jubilee perfect! But when Jack Frost steals Elizabeth’s Diamond Sceptre, both fairy and human celebrations are headed for catastrophe. Can Kirsty and Rachel help Elizabeth find the sceptre so kings and queens everywhere can celebrate in style?
The series looks at the day-to-day life of a Queen who is clearly dedicated to her family and her country and reflects on the personal and political challenges Her Majesty has faced, including coming to the throne as a 25-year-old, the annus horribilis of 1992 and the wedding of her grandson, William, in 2011. With his customary insight and wit, Andrew Marr discovers the hidden side of our most enduring – and enigmatic – monarch, who has outlasted Prime Ministers and Presidents, and has adapted and modernised to ensure the Royal Family is relevant and vital in the 21st Century.
Jubilee DVD Andrew Marr looks at the life and reign of HM Queen Elizabeth II as she celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, speaking to the people that really know her best in the ‘Diamond Queen’ DVD. Marr is granted unique access to Princes William and 48

keeping with this ambition.” KILLER JOE director William Friedkin said: “KILLER JOE is about the Good and Evil in everyone, the struggle for our better angels to triumph over our demons. It’s also a riff on the Cinderella story, wherein she finds her prince, but he turns out to be a hired killer.” As previously announced, EIFF’s Closing Gala will be the European premiere of Disney-Pixar’s BRAVE on 30 June. Edinburgh International Magic Festival Magicians from Australia, New Zealand and the Ukraine will present mindreading, cabaret, comedy at this year’s Edinburgh Magic Festival. The Festival begins at the end of June with an opening night gala at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh.
The Edinburgh International Film Festival At the end of June there is the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Established in 1947, the Edinburgh International Film Festival is renowned around the world for discovering and promoting the very best in international cinema - and for heralding and debating changes in global filmmaking. Intimate in its scale, ambitious in its scope, and fuelled by pure passion for cinema in all its manifestations, EIFF seeks to spotlight the most exciting and innovative new film talent, in a setting steeped in history. William Friedkin’s shockingly cool and blackly comic noir thriller KILLER JOE will be the Opening Gala at the 66th edition of the Festival on Wednesday, 20 June. Chris Fujiwara, EIFF Artistic Director, said: “We’re delighted to be opening this year’s Festival with KILLER JOE. For my first year as Artistic Director, I intend to deliver a diverse programme that will spotlight filmmaking of real artistic distinction. William Friedkin’s exhilarating, intense, and brilliantly crafted film is absolutely in
