Hello neighbours There’s no escaping the fact that winter is approaching fast, with local businesses this month reminding us of services available to help us prepare for winter in case it’s as bad as the last one. Between these pages you’ll find businesses offering everything you need including firewood, ice and snow clearing services, car winter services… not to mention plenty of Christmas shopping fairs and gift ideas. Buy locally and support local causes and traders as well as picking up something a bit different.
column and lots of charity and other local information are all included. Congratulations to George Shaw of Mid Calder who won the crossword prize last month. This month, Deer Park Golf and Country Club in Livingston are offering the chance to win bowl and dine for two, so check out the crossword on page 36 for your chance to win a lovely night out. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory and for supporting local businesses.
November is remembrance time too, so with this in mind we’ve been looking into the story behind a wartime crash in the Pentland Hills, whose victims were buried for a while in Kirknewton graveyard. And as usual, our local walk feature, seasonal recipe page, genealogy

Established in 1980
Hare Hill crash By Emma Merchant
I
n 1943 Britain was at war. On a clear day, from the top of Hare Hill in the Pentland Hills, you could see a great deal of Edinburgh. You would recognise Corstorphine Hill gracing the city’s West, and make out the Leith Docks flanking it on the North. But on the night of 24th March 1943, the Pentland Hills were swathed in dense fog. Anyone searching for the city in the dark that night would find it difficult—and not only because of the inclement weather. National blackout regulations were in full force. City windows were tightly curtained, and city streets unlit in an attempt to prevent the docks being bombed by enemy planes. Anyone flouting regulations faced prosecution. BBC Historian Andrew Jeffrey reveals that Scottish newspapers of the time were littered with blackout offence stories. He describes one unfortunate Dundee man who, using an un-shaded torch to pick his way home after dark, was hauled up before the county sheriff. Even a lit cigarette after dark might be regarded as dangerous and punishable, such was the fear of attack from above. It was believed that pilots might somehow spot the glow of cigarettes from their planes. Unlikely as this may seem, the actual threat of bombing was real enough. On 24th March 1943, four pairs of eyes searched Edinburgh in the fog. They belonged to the four crew members of a German Luftwaffe Junkers Ju 88 Bomber, whose mission was to bomb the Leith Docks. They had set out from France, and had then made their way to Holland for refuelling and loading with bombs before crossing the North Sea towards the Firth of Forth and Edinburgh city docks. Disabling Leith would have severely disrupted the heavy flow of shipping traffic upon which Scotland relied, but the men were unable to locate the docks in the fog, and decided to return to base. Before making the long flight home, however, they needed to jettison their heavy cargo of unused
bombs over farmland. So, they turned southwards towards the Pentland Hills. Their Junkers Ju 88 aircraft, was a model widely used by the German Luftwaffe (air force) during the war. The dark green and black colouring on its underside made it difficult to spot in a lightless sky during night bombing raids. Its twin engines made it the fastest of the bombers, and it could be used for medium bombing, dive-bombing, torpedo bombing, reconnaissance flights and night fighting. We can imagine the airmen in the aircraft that night: the deep drone of twin engines, the smells of fuel, steel and leather. Perhaps the pilot scans a chart and consults with his wireless operator as, together, they peer through the cockpit windows into a gloomy night, searching for landmarks in the fog. 1)
Images 1) Crash wreckage - Photo credit Graem Lister 2) The pilot, Fritz Foerster 3) Frau Hilde Foerster and their children Illustrations with permission of the Aircrew Remembrance Society
Suddenly, the bulk of Hare Hill rushes towards them out of the darkness at impossible speed. The pilot, unable to divert the aircraft in time, ploughs helplessly headlong into the slope, where the aircraft instantly shatters. A deafening explosion rocks the surrounding hills, followed by the quieter crackle of burning fuselage and an orange glow in the night fog. It is officially recorded that at 45 minutes past midnight on the 25th March, the aircraft “hit the ground on the side of (the) hill at a shallow angle and wreckage was scattered over half a mile”. The report states that although machine gun fire had been heard by locals earlier during the night, it was not this, but the weather which caused the crash. And a logbook, recovered from the wreckage, sheds further light on the accident. It gives a full account of the pilot’s personal flight history, and suggests that the aircraft he was flying that night was not the same model as another he had flown on every other occasion. Could it also be, then, that slight unfamiliarity with the aircraft that night led him to make a fatal error? All four men died in the crash. They were subsequently identified as: Fritz Foerster, 30 (pilot), Horst Bluhm, 23 (wireless operator/air gunner), Heinz Kristall, 21 (wireless operator/air gunner), and Willi Euler, 21 (air gunner). Local people, moved by the tragedy of four young lives lost, took the crew’s remains and gave the young men burial in Kirknewton graveyard, where their graves lay for some years. Later, an agreement was made between the governments of Britain and Germany in 1959 to relocate German graves on British soil to a single central location. As a result, the four men’s graves were reinterred to the German War Cemetery in Cannock Chase, Staffordshire, England.
2)
A photograph of the pilot, Fritz Forster reveals an earnest 3) looking man. Another, of his wife, Hilde, and their two small children shows a young family that, like so many others on both sides during the war, will have been blighted by the loss of a loved one. The two children, if they live, will be in their seventies now. Perhaps they have walked on Hare Hill, or visited Kirknewton where, in the North West corner of the graveyard, a small plaque remembers their father and his companions. Many people are interested in the events of the past, and some superb websites exist to promote understanding and to keep memories alive. You may wish to visit the very informative Aircrew Remembrance Society website where you will find an interesting account of this particular wartime accident, with photographs and excerpts from the original documents. www.aircrewremembrancesociety.com You may prefer a visit to Kirknewton churchyard where the men’s graves first lay. Or you may take a walk up Hare Hill. There, on the North West of the hillside, you can find the memorial post erected by local man Kenny Walker, to mark the site of the accident. Perhaps, like others before you, you will stand and admire the views over Edinburgh. And there you may also imagine the rumble of aircraft engines and the fatal crash that happened one dark and foggy night in 1943.

Ready for winter?
A
nother hard winter has been forecast, so it’s time to take a serious look at being prepared for safe driving in bad conditions. One option is to get winter tyres fitted. Widely used in many Northern European countries, winter tyres are specially designed for snowy driving conditions and can make a huge difference to your ability to get about. When fitted to an ordinary car, performance on snowy or icy roads is often not far off a 4x4, making it not only easier to get around, but safer too. Last winter here at Calder Motor Company we put winter tyres on all our employees’ cars – and they were able to get into work every day without any problems, not to mention doing the shopping and other chores. To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638
Another option is to purchase a set of chains. Chains are less expensive and you can fit them yourself, however you cannot use them unless there is actually snow and ice on the ground. We can supply and fit winter tyres, please call us for prices and advice. How Do Winter Tyres Work? The tread design on a winter tyre allows snow and ice to roll out of the tyre as it moves, rather than sticking in a mass. There are larger spaces in the tread to help the tyre bite down through snow, and unlike normal tyres the materials used stay soft and flexible in freezing conditions. Together, these features give winter tyres good grip.

“Ski Miners
Family history column by Maureen McIntyre
Stoneyburn, West Lothian
T
he start of the 20th century saw an influx of Russian and Lithuanian miners into Scotland looking for work; ironically many of them arriving here had paid for passage to America and on arrival in Scotland were told that they were in America! Some did eventually continue on to the Americans but many decided to settled in Scotland and in particular to the mining area of Stoneyburn in West Lothian. These workers spoke little or no English; many were also illiterate and would have found it very difficult to settle into this small and very Scottish community. Anyone trying to trace these families in the birth, marriage, death and census records will really struggle as the spelling of the families’ surnames was far from consistent in any archives or official records. One archive which does hold a large amount of information about these miners in Stoneyburn is the Valuation Rolls held by the National Records of Scotland and many local archives. The Valuation Rolls contain information on every piece of property in Scotland, whether a castle or a barn, from 1855 to 1955 and details the address and description of the property as well as who owned, lived in and rented the property. The valuation rolls for the years just before and after the First World War House Married No
VR Name
have many unusual entries for the tenants of some of the houses in Stoneyburn - each of these entries sees a Scottish surname with the word SKI added after it. Sneddonski, Greenski , Wilsonski, Smithski, Brownski and McGillski are just some of the names the assessor has recorded as the tenants of these miners houses. The only way to try and find the correct name of these families is to compare the birth and death records for the years concerned and match the addresses on the statutory records to the Valuation Rolls. I am confident that I have found the correct names for the families living at 62, 86 and 126 Stoneyburn. Matiejus has been anglicised as Matthew but why the surnames Millerski, Mitchellski and Smithski have been used is a mystery!
Genealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham
I
n order to develop a better relationship with yourself you must become aware of the internal dialogue your having with yourself! What are you telling yourself when you look in the mirror? Is it generally complimentary or criticism? When you feel you’ve done something wrong or said something you feel you shouldn’t? Do you comfort or belittle yourself? When someone gives you a compliment do you accept it gracefully or do you put yourself down? Remember it isn’t possible to criticise and judge yourself negatively and feel good at the same time. To lift your relationship with yourself, list at least ten things you like about yourself every day. Accept compliments by simply
saying Thank You and train yourself to leave it at that! If you don’t feel at ease with something you’ve said or done – correct it and move on. This takes courage but you’ll feel better about yourself. Stop putting yourself down - either in private or in public. And above all think and speak words that are kind and gentle to yourself as well as to others and watch how your relationship with yourself starts to change. Have a great day. Criss crossing Camilty Forest By Karen Murray
I
n a bid to find an enjoyable place to stroll, walk briskly or dog walk, I cajoled ‘friend with dog’ to join me on what she considered to be possibly a wild goose chase! “I’ve spotted a place to park the car and I reckon we can walk there” was what I told her. The place to park? A little entrance into the forest off the Lang Whang (A70) after a sign saying Camilty Forest on the left and before the right turn for West Calder. Blink and you could miss it, which we did first pass by. However, car duly parked we headed off up the fairly well gravelled path into the Camilty forest. There are several paths around and it was hit or miss which to take. Our first attempt at straight ahead led us to a private road so we doubled back and took the path to the left. This opened up into a wide path picking its way through the rather wild and beautiful scenery of this forest, with its views of the peaks of the Pentland Hills and an abundance of wild flowers along the path’s edge. The Camilty Forest actually straddles the Lang Whang - or the A70 as it is officially called - and it lies on the very edge of the Pentland Hills Regional Park. You can hear the very slight rumble of the cars going by on the adjacent road, but otherwise you could be miles away from anywhere on this forest trail and the dog loved it - particularly the pools of rather peaty murky water at the edge of the path where she insisted on taking a bath every so often! Forestry Commission areas are a great place to find quiet, peaceful walks away from it all and this is no exception. In fact the United Nations Forum on Forests declared 2011 the International Year of Forests (IYF) to raise awareness about the sustainable management, conservation 30
and development of all types of forests, so it seems only right to visit one before the year is out. The particular path we chose continues to wend its way through the forest and as we were walking in the evening sunlight, the sun was low on the horizon and glinting through the trees. The path is gravelled and relatively even, so not hard-going terrain, and after around 30 minutes we came to a forestry gate. This could be scaled and the walk continued but as usual there were other places to be and things to be done, so we took the gate as our turning point and retraced our steps back to the car. A simple walk and not too strenuous but a good one for the dog and a change of scene for me. I was surprised at just how away from it all I felt, despite being so close to a main road. If you are interested in birdlife, this is certainly a great place. Common crossbills can be seen flying in groups above the treetops and then landing to feed on the seeds in the cones and common sandpipers swoop down to the burns searching for aquatic insects. As it turned out I later discovered that had we continued a little further down the road there is an official car park for the Camilty Forest - Shear Bridge car park, from where you can take a short
Please remember to mention The Konect Directory when contacting advertisers
circular grass trail past a burn and back. The grassy area next to the car park is considered a great spot for picnics in the summer. However it is not really much of a walk - the spot we found gave us greater access to the forest paths, so if you are wanting to stretch your legs and enjoy a good hike, park at the first little inlet into the forest and walk for as long as you like. I expect you would eventually come to Harperrig Reservoir. If anyone finds out, do let me know.

Vet’s Tip:
Exotic pets : snakes
N
ot many people have snakes as pets, but if you’re thinking about getting a snake for the first time it’s essential to get care advice from a professional. An ideal beginner’s snake is a corn snake. They can grow up to 5ft long, but remain quite slim and are relatively easy to care for. The snake container (vivarium) should have a few objects for the snake to hide in, fresh water, and a heat mat on one side - so that the snake can choose the warm or the cooler side. Corn snakes eat mice which should be purchased frozen and defrosted thoroughly at room temperature. Snakes don’t mind being handled, although after feeding or shedding they should be left for a couple of days. Corn snakes tend not to wrap around your arm like pythons, but instead point their head in one direction and go straight. It’s best to always try to give them more than one option of where to go, as they often change their minds.

I
recently went to the Development Trust Association of Scotland conference and was very impressed with the ‘can do’ attitude of the people involved. People in Kirknewton have shown that too.
in the village, for example. We know many of you want to help in any way you can - just simply by popping by on the day of an event and helping out (even at the last minute!)
This month, for example, two people came forward with ideas that fit in with the community development plan. One idea will provide the village with a youth art project. Another has encouraged a further 14 people to offer help with a major cycling project in the local area. Others in the village have given their expertise to help with the proposed Resource Centre. The work in the park was instigated by members of the village with the ‘can do’ attitude. Another person has taken forward some of the traffic issues in the village. Many people let their feelings known when we needed support to continue our food waste trial (sadly this looks like it will finish at the end of October). Behind the scenes there a number of people who have skills to guide our negotiations with wind farm developers. Others are making sure that the infrastructure of the village is maintained if the army move barracks here. Individuals campaigned against and others let their feelings known about the proposed underpass near the train station. Another group of volunteers were able to keep an after school club running before handing it to a professional team who can help develop the service further. What amazes me is the ink is all but dry on the Kirknewton Development Plan and before the official launch on 01.11.11 you are actioning some of the objectives already! We know there are many more unsung heroes in the village who give their time to benefit others - unpaid carers who look after young children or the elderly 34
On 11.11.11 we launch a skills and volunteering survey for the village. Over 11 days we want to get a sense of who does what in the village currently and what you might like to do. You can access the development plan and the online survey at www.kirknewton.org or you fill out a paper copy of the survey too. The survey will give you the opportunity to say what skills and how much time you feel you can give to projects in the village. You may be looking for something new to do and we hope to give you advice on how you can get involved or match you with others to get an idea off the ground. So mark the dates in your diary. As we chase the ghouls and goblins away on Halloween we launch the Development Plan and prepare for the challenges to make the village and surrounding area of Kirknewton even better over the next three years! November recipe and food notes
P
umpkins are good for more than just disembowelling for Jack-o-Lantern fun at halloween! An Amercian favourite, pumpkins are gradually becoming more popular here. They are delicious, healthy and versatile and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes. There is a variety of pumpkins and winter squashes available. They all have hard orange or yellow flesh and a hollow centre with stringy fibres and seeds. Before cooking, remove the hard skin and cut away the seeds and stringy fibres. Pumpkin seeds can be washed and lightly roasted for a tasty snack or to add a crunchy texture to biscuits and muffins. Pumpkin Risotto Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 12 sage leaves 400 g risotto rice, preferably arborio 800 g pumpkin, peeled and chopped into small pieces 1.25 litres chicken stock 30 g butter 40 g parmesan, finely grated finely grated parmesan and fried sage leaves, to serve Method Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Heat a large ovenproof saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the oil and onion and cook for 3 minutes or until soft. Add the sage and cook for 1 minute. Add the rice, pumpkin and stock and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Bake for 30 minutes. The risotto will be quite liquid. Season with salt and pepper, then stir through the butter and parmesan for 2 minutes until the risotto thickens slightly. Sprinkle with extra parmesan and fried sage leaves to serve. Pumpkin Pie Classic American sweet pie traditionally served at Thanksgiving (every fourth Thursday of November). Ingredients Serves: 16
38
For the filling: 500g mashed, cooked pumpkin (scoop out seeds and stringy fibres, cut pumpkin into chunks and boil or microwave until soft. Remove peel then mash with potato masher) 1 tin evaporated milk 2 eggs, beaten 175g dark brown soft sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon salt For the pastry: 350g plain flour 1 teaspoon salt 200g butter 125ml cold water Method Preheat oven to 200 C/180C fan/gas 6. Prepare pastry by mixing together the flour and salt. Rub butter into flour, and add 1 tablespoon cold water to mixture at a time. Mix and repeat until pastry is moist enough to hold together. With lightly floured hands, shape pastry into a ball. On a lightly floured board, roll pastry out to barely a 0.25cm thickness. Transfer to a 20 or 23cm pie dish, gently pressing pastry into the bottom. Cut off any excess pastry hanging over the sides of the dish, and pinch pastry securely around the inner edge. In a large bowl with mixer speed on medium, beat pumpkin with evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and salt. Mix well. Pour into a prepared pie dish. Bake 40 minutes or until a knife inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Inside & Out By Tony Foster
I
f you like putting your feet up at home or love to go out, each month Tony Foster will take you through the highlights of what to do and where to go across the Lothians.
INSIDE Technology special This month many people experienced problems with their Blackberry. Mine simply died and is still in the shop getting repaired! It is amazing how cumbersome it feels turning on a laptop to check my e mail and social networking sites. My smart phone failure coupled with my recent shopping expeditions for requests to Santa I thought I’d touch on the latest gadgets and gizmos this month! Kindle Normally on the ‘Inside’ section of this column we have a book of the month. Now you can download most books in a minute on your new Kindle from Amazon and store up to 1,400 books in your ‘library’. The Kindle is only 170 grams, lighter than a paperback book, and can fit easily into your pocket or bag. Over one million books are free or retail less for what you would pay in the shops. iPhone 4s Smartphone wise the Samsung Galaxy or HTC Wildfire or Sensation are popular models at the moment and Blackberry, despite all their current problems, have launched a new touchscreen phone. Just released is, of course, the i-Phone 4s. Lighter, faster and with ‘Siri’, the best voice controlled system ever, the new phone also has Apples latest operating software, IOS5. IOS5 has 200 new features as well as TheCloud online storage. Most apple i phone and i-pod touch users can download the new 48
operating software, so don’t go trading in your old i phone just yet. Sony S tablet PC The iPhones bigger brother, the iPad2, may still be the most well know ‘tablet’ but just released is the Sony S Tablet PC. It has all the benefits of a Sony Bravia and Tru Black technologies, can have simple interaction with your TV and is a PlayStation Certified console with integrated camera. Music, movies, games and books are easily downloaded too! Perfect for your new Christmas albums from JLS, One Direction, Olly Murs, Ronan Parke, Susan Boyle and Kate Bush’s ‘50 Words For Snow’ (yes, there is an album or two not influenced by Simon Cowell)! Moshi Monsters Despite all the wonderful things this latest technology is capable of people will simply enjoy playing games on them. Moshi Monsters is the fastest growing online game with 50 million players in 150 countries worldwide! Moshi Monsters – Moshling Zoo is out mid-November for Nintendo. Hands free games consoles should be big this Christmas and other games that will be on the Christmas wish list look like being football games (Pro Evolution, Football Manager or Fifa 2012), Dance and fitness games (Just Dance 3 & Zumba Fitness) or Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge. Or you could go outside and have a kick around or join a dance class. Just saying…
OUTSIDE Remember, remember… Guy Fawkes and I share the same birth date (not year, obviously) – 13th April. A truly unmemorable date, unlike the 5th November – a day of gunpowder, treason and plot. There are plenty of

fireworks promised at Hopetoun House this year, alongside music from Walt Disney classics. November 25th-27th is also their Christmas Fair. So if you are looking for an unusual gift for someone extra special then get down to this wonderful stately home. There are also firework displays at Currie/Balerno in King George V Park. Deer Park (with family disco), Linlithgow at the Rugby Football Club and at Livingston Cricket Club too. Linlithgow Book Festival The Linlithgow Book Festival takes place from 4th to 6th November. Now in its 6th year the highlight of the Festival is politician Tam Dalyell who will be talking about his autobiography ‘The Importance of Being Awkward’. This event has been moved to Linlithgow Academy and more tickets are now available. Sunday is a day for the kids at the Book Festival. This year Allan Burnett, author of the ‘And All That’ series, will be in costume and talking about Mary Queen of Scots and other famous characters from Scottish history. I don’t think Guy Fawkes will count! More info can be found at www.linlithgowbookfestival.org Car boot sale The Scottish War Blind based at the Linburn Centre in Wilkieston will be having a car boot sale in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust on 12th November from 11am til 3pm. There will be award winning magician Tricky Ricky at 1pm with Santa’s grotto, tombola, face painting, home baking and craft stalls too. East Calder All Steps Cheerleaders The annual performance from the East Calder All Steps Cheerleaders can be seen at the Howden Park Centre on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638

November. We mentioned earlier throwing away the games console and going to a dance class. Howden has a few you can join – find out about the Cheerleaders event and the dance classes at www.howdenparkcentre.co.uk. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 The film of the month is the latest instalment of the Twilight saga starring Kirsten Stewart and latest teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson. Based on the book by Stephenie Meyer,Edward and Bella’s unborn child poses different threats to the wolf pack and the vampire coven. The film is released on 18th November in the UK. Farmers Markets at Juniper Green and Balerno This issue of Konect may come out in time for you to still enjoy the Kirknewton Apple Day event that is taking place in the Village Hall on 30th October from 12 noon to 4pm. Enjoy home baking, face painting and dooking for apples. MSP Angela Constance will be judging the best apple pic contest. For more tasty food and crafts you can also try out the community led farmers market at Juniper Green, near the Kinleith Arms, on Saturday 26 November from 9am to 1pm or go to the Balerno Farmers Market on 12th November, where there is a new regular service of kids craft activities too. 49
