Brighten those dark winter nights with an evening of comedy
BOUNCERS by John Godber
WOMBERANG By Sue Townsend
Performed by
The Livingston Players Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 January 2010 at 7.30pm Brian Duguid Auditorium Howden Park Centre Tickets £10 Box Office 01506 777666
Bringing quality theatre to the local community The Livingston Players take a professional approach to amateur theatre and have been presenting productions of the highest standard to the local community since 1970. They perform three productions each year, a play in January and October and a full length musical in May. These are presented in The Brian Duguid Auditorium at Howden Park Centre, a 300 seat custom built theatre with full restaurant and bar facilities. The production in January will be a double comedy bill, comprising: BOUNCERS By John Godber It’s disco night! All over town the preparations start early… hair is gelled back, outfits selected and handbags are at the ready. Down at the disco the DJ croons into his microphone. On the dance floor the night-clubbers gyrate to the pulsing beat. Outside watching, waiting and ever ready stand Lucky Eric, Judd, Les and Ralph…The Bouncers! WOMBERANG By Sue Townsend From the writer of “The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole.” A hilarious tale of a group of women who meet in the gynaecology clinic of an NHS hospital. A comedy that takes a satirical swipe at everything from doctors to dentures and men to menopause! The musical in May will be ANYTHING GOES. Audiences of all ages will enjoy the madcap antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London with non-stop laughter, song and dance. This age-old tale of Boy-Meets-Girl and the complications which ensue are told through some of Cole Porter’s most well known songs. Rehearsals start in January and new members will be made very welcome, so if you can sing, dance or would just like to get involved contact Carol Collier on 01506 881398 or visit our website at www.livingstonplayers.org.uk.
Message from the Editor Hello neighbours Another month, another Konect Directory....and it’s the biggest yet! Have a browse through the magazine and pick up some more ideas for your Christmas shopping - there are lots of ideas for gifts that you can get locally, so look out for all the companies offering gift and discount vouchers this month. Don’t forget to support your local primary schools too - both Pumpherston and Mid Calder have their Christmas Fairs on the 5th December. There are a couple of great prizes to be won in this issue. The Livingston Players are offering tickets for 2 for their January performance - see details of the show opposite, and check out the crossword on page 34 for your chance to win. Morton Clay Targets
and Fishery are also offering two very generous prizes this month, so if fishing or clay shooting is your thing, or you’d like to give it a try, turn to their competitions on page 21. Congratulations to Mrs Park of Mid Calder who won £15 of meats from Steven Belford Butcher last month. We’re having a break over Christmas and New Year, so there will be no January issue. Have a great holiday season and look out for the February issue at the end of January!

Street names - an historical pot pourri
T
he name of the streets we live in and use everyday is something we don’t normally think about at
all. Most of them can be explained by history, and it’s interesting to browse this list of names and learn a little about what is behind them. Some have been named after significant local people, some got their names from what they were used for, and the origins of some are lost in the mists of time. This is a very incomplete list and I’m sure there are many locals who could supply further information. We’d be delighted to hear from you! Bank Street - in Mid Calder, Bank Street is dominated by the large Victorian bank building Causewayend : refers to a paved or ‘causewayed’ road, and may mark the end of a paved road built by the Romans. They had a camp on Kaimes Hill. Churchill Way - RAF Kirknewton was US Airforce base from 1952, accomodation for the personnel was built here and two of the roads were named after British and American leaders Churchill and Roosevelt. Ormiston, Bonnington and Humbie are names of Scandanavian origin, or Scandanavian/English compounds. Their grouping in this area, along with Ingliston and Cobbinshaw, suggests a small Scandanavian settlement in the area. The Esk, Water of Leith and Almond were the possible lines of infiltration from the coast.
Cunnigar Gardens - Cunnigar is the name of the hill in Mid Calder. Believed to be topped by a bronze-age tumulus or burial barrow, its name derives from all the rabbit warrens that 6
peppered its steep sides. Cunnigar is a Scots word meaning rabbit warren. Gasworks Brae - Mid Calder had its own gasworks Harperrig - lies on higher ground above an ancient road, and means ‘‘ridge of the army road’’, referring to the causewayed road on the neighbouring farm.
Harperrig
Kennedie Park - A Mid Calder minister, the Rev Hew Kennedie, led an investigation in 1644 which resulted in several Mid Calder women being arrested, tried and charged with witchcraft. At least one was burned on Cunnigar Hill. Langton - Langton House, originally Lantoun House, was the residence of Count John de Lantoun. Limekilns Grove - there were lime quarries and large lime kilns at the Camps from around 1865 to 1913. Market Street - the broad street in Mid Calder where markets and fairs were held. Milrig - Refers to the medieval ‘‘run rig’’ system where tennant farmers cultivated alternate ridges in the land. ‘‘Mile Rig’’ could refer to the length of the ridges cultivated here. Likewise Stoneyrig, referring to the stoney nature of the land. Powies Path. A ‘‘Pow’’ is a small stream or burn. So Powies Path means a foot

road near a small river. Roosevelt Road - RAF Kirknewton was US Airforce base from 1952, accomodation for the personnel was built here and two of the roads were named after British and American leaders Churchill and Roosevelt. Sandilands Drive - The Sandilands family has long association with Mid Calder - James de Sandilands married the sister of the 1st Earl of Douglas, who received the Barony of Calder in 1349. The name Sandilands derives from lands they originally owned in Clydesdale. Smithy Brae - in Kirknewton, where the forge was located.
and educator. He set up school in a log cabin, the ‘‘Log College’’ which is considered to be predecessor to Princeton University. The Pend - This is a Scottish architectural term for a passageway that passes through a building, often from a street through to a courtyard. There were stables through the Pend opposite Torphichen Arms in Mid Calder, used by the Inn’s customers for many years. Torphichen. Head of Sandilands family took the title Lord Torphichen after the Reformation. The village of Torphichen lies 15 miles north in the Bathgate Hills, where the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem had their Scottish HQ until the reformation. James Sandilands was the preceptor of the order. Wallace Mill - originally West Mill. There was a mill here, producing flour and oatmeal. Wilkieston - named after Captain Wilkie of Ormiston, it is a relatively young Smithy Brae, Kirknewton, early 20th Century. The blacksmith’s is settlement. on the left hand side behind the white house
Sommers Park. John Sommers, Minister of Parish of Mid Calder from 1794 to 1842. Spottiswoode Gardens. John Spottiswoode Jnr was born in Mid Calder in 1565, was minister here, and more significantly was made Archbishop of St Andrews in 1615, primate of Scotland. He crowned Charles 1 at Holyrood in 1633. St Cuthberts - a church at the west end of East Calder was dedicated to St Cuthbert. Tennent Park -William Tennent was born in Mid Calder in 1673, emigrated to America in 1798, and was a prominent religious leader To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638

Adding to Someone’s Life through Kindness Positive Thought for the Month by Jackie Whigham CHRISTMAS is a time when we come
together to show our appreciation for one another. We do this through party nights, lots of food and drink, and of course, through the exchange of presents! Don’t restrict this act of kindness to your family and friends. BECOME aware of anyone in your neighbourhood who might be spending this Christmas alone and invite them in for a ‘wee dram’. Give them a little bit of your time to let them know you care. WHEN you’re out shopping for Christmas presents, give a little something to those on the street who
have nothing, even a kind smile to acknowledge them and be grateful it’s not you or yours...but remember they are someone’s. TO THOSE who are feeling the credit crunch. Don’t get caught up with the ‘thing in a bag’ syndrome. Living within your means will make you happy which in turn will rub off onto your children. Happiness is the greatest gift of all because it’s contagious. THIS month see someone else’s need and give freely of your time. AND REMEMBER – The Gift is always to the Giver’. WISHING YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS!
For comments, questions or subjects you’d like me to write about in the future write to jackiewhigham1@aol.com

Micro Hydro Electricity Generating Scheme – Harperrig Reservoir
T
he Water of Leith was once an important source of power: “The rapid flow of the river was harnessed to drive waterwheels in mills at over 70 sites along the river” Water of Leith Trust.
Trust is working together with Community Energy Scotland, The Water of Leith Trust, City of Edinburgh Council, and three other community organisations who are each
Now the river could provide useful source of renewable hydro electric power for the 21st Century. Kirknewton Community Development Trust is investigating developing a micro hydro scheme for generating renewable electricity at Harperrig Reservoir. Funding has been awarded for a detailed feasibility study, which will look at the potential for a small hydro electric generator (21Kw) to be installed within the reservoir dam. It would be powered by water flowing out of the reservoir into the Water of Leith.
This is one of five pilot projects currently being investigated on the Water of Leith. If successful, the scheme will provide income for the local community which can be used to regenerate the local area. Kirknewton Community Development
investigating their own micro hydro scheme along the river - Balerno Village Trust, Dean Village Association and Greener Leith. Each community group has benefited from the support of Community Energy Scotland's assistance with funding and technical issues, City of Edinburgh Council’s expertise in managing the flow and ecology of the river and The Water of Leith Trust's advocacy for protecting the river as a historic, cultural and ecological asset to the region. R D Energy Solutions will carry out a detailed feasibility study providing technical and financial information for each of the projects. It will also benefit from taking a whole river approach, looking at the potential effects of all four schemes on the entire Water of Leith water course to ensure that the ecology of the river is protected.

Ideas for making your own Christmas decorations
G
et in the festive spirit and save some pennies by making your own decorations this Christmas. These mini-projects aren't only fun to do, they're green too! Spray paint some pine cones and pebbles silver and gold. Once they are dry, place them in a glass bowl to make a stunning centrepiece. Pick sprigs of holly and mistletoe to arrange over picture frames, on the mantelpiece and to hang above doors. Make some snowflakes by cutting out different sized circles from white paper. Take each circle, fold in half, then into quarters, and repeat until you have a thin wedge of paper. Next, using scissors, take nicks out of all the sides, cutting little holes and semi circles. Unfold carefully and you'll have some beautiful snowflakes to stick to your windows. Make some stained-glass biscuits by mixing 125g butter, 175g plain flour, 60g caster To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638
sugar and a teaspoon of milk in a bowl, kneading into a firm dough. Roll out onto a floured surface and cut into shapes. With a smaller cutter, take the middle section out of each biscuit before placing onto some non-stick baking paper. Pop a few pieces of broken boiled sweets into each hole, and cook at 180째 for about 10 minutes. Hang from the tree with ribbon or string. In a pan, make some popcorn and spread it out onto newspaper. Spray or paint each piece with glue before sprinkling with glitter. When dry, take a needle and thread and string the pieces together to wrap around the tree. Make a Christmas wreath by bending a wire coat hanger into a circle and binding cuttings of fir or pine to it with string. Attach berries, twigs (sprayed silver or gold), ivy, fruits - and a big bow to finish. Cut some large oranges into slices and place onto a baking tray for cooking in the oven on a very low heat. Once they are completely dried out, combine with cinnamon sticks and cloves to make a festive pot pourri mix.

Where The Wild Things Are Jenny Thomson visits our local zoo
F
ive Sisters Zoo is home to a surprising variety of animals from all over the world and they are not all wild! We are very lucky to have this wonderful resource right here on our doorstep at Gavieside, just outside West Calder. On arrival the first animals you see are the meerkats standing up and on the lookout for every visitor. This is not the kind of zoo where half the cages seem empty - every time I’ve visited Five Sisters, the animals are friendly and active. Walking on, the next animals that caught my attention were the ring-tailed lemurs with their arms stretched out sunbathing. I was lucky to be there at feeding time and allowed in the pen with them, a real treat. You can help hand-feed the lemurs twice daily (up to 6 people at a time in the cage). There are so many lovely animals it is hard to mention them all, but for me the pygmy marmosets, which would fit in the palm of your hand, were my favourites, small and so gorgeous! There really is something for everyone, from

the creepy crawlies to the crocodiles, the swinging monkeys to the laughing kookaburra, the prairie dogs to the fluffy, strokable pets in the domestic section. And if the youngsters in your party still have lots of energy there is the wonderful Leaping Lemurs soft play area, a massive indoor area of slides, swings and climbing ropes and a welcome sit down with a snack for those reluctantly too large to play! Five Sisters Zoo is keen to encourage school and group visits, birthday parties, animal handling and daily lemur feeds. If you are looking to give a present with a difference why not give someone the chance to be a Zoo Keeper for a day or half day, Adopt an Animal, gift vouchers for the Falconry School or an Annual Membership. Definitely a present to remember. If you are a vegetable or fruit grower, or a retailer and would be happy to donate unwanted produce, please contact the Zoo who would love to hear from you.

Scotch Quail Eggs
Q
uail eggs are a must-have for your Christmas entertaining. Their small size makes them a perfect bite-sized serving for parties. This traditional scotch egg recipe uses quail eggs, and could be served in a salad. Experiment with different herbs in the sausage meat. Don’t forget that quail eggs cook much quicker than hen’s eggs. Ingredients 24 quail eggs, hard boiled (don’t over boil as they will be cooked further when deep fried) and peeled 150g sausage meat 2 tbsp mixed herbs, finely chopped (chives, parsley and tarragon work well) pinch salt and freshly ground pepper 100g plain flour 2 eggs, beaten 120g breadcrumbs oil for deep frying
Preheat the oil in a deep fryer or deep saucepan or wok to 180°C. Mix the sausage meat with the finely chopped herbs, nutmeg and season with a little salt and pepper. Flatten a dessert spoon of the sausage meat in the palm of your hand and wrap an egg in the meat and repeat this with all the eggs. Place the flour on a plate or bowl and season it with a little salt and pepper, place the beaten egg in a bowl and the breadcrumbs on a plate or bowl. Roll the quail eggs in the flour then the eggs and finally the breadcrumbs, so that they are well coated with the breadcrumbs. Set them aside until ready to cook. If you are preparing them in advance cover them and refrigerate them until ready to cook. To Cook: Deep fry a few eggs at a time (don’t overcrowd) in the preheated oil for 2 minutes turning them with a slotted spoon so that all sides are cooked. Remove the eggs from the deep fryer with a slotted spoon and drain them on kitchen paper.

How to Stop Eating Too Much at Christmas
W
ith all the tempting food available in December, it's difficult to resist eating too much - yet if you don't you'll regret it later. But how do you resist when there is so much on offer? And without feeling that you're missing out? 1. Have what you really want. When you're faced with wall-to-wall goodies, don't feel that you have to get your nutrition before you indulge. You'll only end up with more calories than your body needs. In other words, if you know you're going to have the apple pie, don't fill up on meat and potatoes and then have it! 2. Take three bites. If the chocolate cake looks good but you know 800 calories is not going to look great on your hips, have a tiny piece. Have three bites, eat them as slowly as you can and really taste what you're eating. Satisfy your taste buds without wolfing down a huge portion. 3. Quality counts. Instead of buying cheap fattening treats at Christmas indulge yourself and your family with the best delicacies you can afford. Buy the best and treat yourself that way rather than picking your way through a mountain of unmemorable junk. 4. If you lapse. If you do over-indulge, don't give up all semblance of watching what you eat for the whole festive period. It's only one meal, one snack and you're unlikely to have done much damage. Just go right back to eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full right from your next meal. 5. Pace yourself. If you're going to a party later, don't starve yourself or you'll fall ravenously on the buffet table or bread basket. Eat moderately during the day with lower calorie but filling foods - soup and bread or salad and a baked potato for lunch and have a small snack such as an apple or some toast later in the afternoon so that you don't arrive too hungry at the party. 6. Stay away. Whatever you do don't position yourself near the buffet table - you'll nibble all night. Put one or two things on a plate and get away from there - you can always go back if you're still hungry. Don't leave snack foods lying
36
around at home. Put them out of sight as much as you can. 7. Keep busy. The more you do the less time you'll have to sit around eating, so get busy around the house. Get all your preparations done early so that you're less stressed and less likely to turn to food to soothe your frazzled state. 8. Plan ahead. Make sure you take a few minutes out of your schedule to plan your meals each day. It would be even better if you could organise yourself to do this on a weekly basis. If you don't plan your meals you'll end up eating out or calling for takeaway more than is good for you. Also if you know you've got big meals or parties on particular days, plan some lighter meals (but not starvation rations) on the days before and after to help balance out the amount you are eating. 9. Low calorie options. If you’re in charge of cooking use all the tricks you know to reduce the calories of the food without reducing the flavour. Look up some lowcalorie versions of the dishes you normally cook, or try some new lighter recipes. They may be an improvement on what you usually cook. Provide alternatives for any particularly fattening dishes - fruit salad as well as Christmas pudding for example. Your health conscious guests will thank you. 10. Be Mindful. We put so much in our mouths without thinking about it, without even noticing it or enjoying it. This is easy to do with so much food available and lying out on display. Make sure that whatever you eat, you serve it properly. Put it on a plate or in a bowl, sit down and enjoy it. Even if you intend to do this, you'll catch yourself nibbling from packets, standing up in the kitchen or whatever - but awareness is half the battle - just notice how much you do this so that you can gradually start to change this habit.

A CANINE CHRISTMAS AT DOGS TRUST WEST CALDER
T
hirty one years on from the birth of its famous slogan “A dog is for life not just for Christmas®” Dogs Trust, which has a rehoming centre in West Calder, is bracing itself for another busy Christmas. In 1978 20% of dogs were given as gifts whereas in 2008 this figure was just 1.8%. However, this still represents 131,400 dogs per year. Sadly many pups are abandoned soon after being given as presents, while older dogs can be dumped to make way for the newer pups. To help prevent people thoughtlessly buying dogs as Christmas presents, Dogs Trust West Calder will not rehome dogs from Sunday 20th December to 2nd January. People can visit the centre and reserve a dog, but will not be able to take it home until the New Year.
sacks filled with toys and treats sent in from dog lovers all over the country. Last year we had an unwanted Christmas present pup abandoned on Christmas Day itself. Theo the Labrador puppy had been bought as a gift for a young family who soon realised they hadn’t the time to dedicate to a puppy. They abandoned him at the centre on Christmas morning itself!” For more information on Dogs Trust or to make a donation to the dogs this Christmas go to www.dogstrust.org.uk or call 020 7837 0006.

Christmas at Dogs Trust West Calder As well as taking in abandoned dogs over the Christmas period, staff will continue their usual busy job of looking after the 60 dogs in their care. Some will hand feed pups throughout the night over the holiday period. Susan Tonner, Centre Manager, comments: “Christmas Day at the rehoming centre is busy but made to be as jolly as possible. Staff and volunteers wear tinsel and hats, and we play festive tunes while thoroughly spoiling our canine residents. Whilst other people are preparing the turkey, the staff at the centre will be hands on cleaning the kennels and walking the dogs. At lunchtime we give the dogs Santa
In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have never forgotten this.

Can you rehome a ‘Sticky Dog’? The term 'Sticky Dogs' was created by Dogs Trust staff several years ago to describe the dogs that just seemed to ‘stick’ in kennels. Some of these dogs do not like being in a kennel environment and so do not show themselves well, others have behavioural issues that can be successfully resolved away from the stressful kennel environment. Others are just not ‘pretty’ and are sticky purely because of their looks. Dogs Trust West Calder has two such ‘stickies’ – Robbie and Toby the Border Collies. Although they are brothers they are looking for separate

homes so owners can spend special time and attention on their training. Both brothers have come from a farming background so have a strong instinct to be busy. These beautiful boys each really need a special home where they can be doing something busy like agility or even hill-walking and leading an active and challenging life. Both are friendly to people, although a little shy. They are quick to learn, very fit and agile and love to have a cuddle. Both find the outside world a little overwhelming but this can be overcome in the right home. Toby and Robbie are vaccinated, neutered and microchipped and come with pet insurance and free behavioural advice.

to highlight it, we asked Ian to do the decorating too. Children’s Book Reviews by Carla
The Wee Free Men, by Terry Pratchett Little blue-skinned, red-haired men, green, weedy river monsters. Sticky, gooey boys and witches. Lots of witches. Good ones though. But then, Old Mrs Whatsyourname next door could be a witch. I like this series because I like the idea of mischievous trouble-making kilted imps and great courting winter-spirits. These books are full of mischief and logic. Like riddles, impossible to work out, but when you know the answer it’s logical and you wonder why you didn't think of it before. Granny Aching is my hero of the books. So full of sheep and tobacco, friends with everyone. The Nac Mac Feegles are a funny lot, too naughty and ugly to be fairies, but as magical as one. What they’re about... The Wee Free Men - Introducing everyone and getting to know the witches and their habits. A Hat Full of Sky – the most logical book of all three, and probably the one where the Feegles are at their cheekiest. The Wintersmith – A mad dance, ending with the wintersmith spirit falling in love with Tiffany Aching. Wonderful books, absolutely marvellous to me though they're the only Terry Pratchett books I like! 50
The Ranger’s Apprentice, by John Flanagan Will is found on the doorstep of Redmont Castle with a note saying that both his parents are dead. He grows up an orphan, with others just like himself, but he is the only one not to know who his parents are or anyone who knew them. When everyone, that is, all the wards, gets ready to be chosen for a job, Halt the Ranger decides to take him as his apprentice. Will agrees reluctantly and goes on to learn what a Ranger does and how they do it. I like this series, there’s excitement and action all through. Anyone with a taste for adventure should read this! What they’re about... The Ruins of Gorlan – Apprenticed to Halt, Will finds himself member of the Ranger Corps! But terrifying monsters are on the prowl, the Kalkara. Only 11, Will finds himself battling for his life! The Burning Bridge – The lord of the rain and night is plotting something. But what? The rangers are sent to see what, and even though Halt didn’t mean to, Will finds himself playing with fire again. For goodness sake, he’s only 11! These books are witty and well-paced. John Flanagan (Australian) is an outstanding writer. His fascinating books were originally intended to encourage children to read. There are five more wonderful books like this in the series. They’re not to be missed! Carla is 11 years old and lives in Kirknewton

ongratulations are due to Kirknewton resident Gillian Mitchell who was awarded an MBE in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. Mrs Mitchell works as a secretary at the Neo Natal Unit at the Simpsons Maternity Pavillion, Royal Edinburgh Infirmary. The award is recognition for her dedication to the charity - her fundraising efforts over the past 11 years have helped raise £400,000 for the charity, allowing it to buy essential extra equipment for the neo natal unit. Starbirds Cheerleaders
S
tarbirds Cheerleaders was originally founded by Cathy Bird. Cathy introduced the girls to cheerleading and developed their skills to be able to compete in a variety of competitions alongside other West Lothian teams. Since August, Starbirds Cheerleaders has been taken over by ourselves (Gillian Farrell & Elaine McLean). With over 10 years experience in the Cheerleading industry, we have been able to enhance the skills that the girls have already gained. Since taking over in August, our aim was to prepare the girls for the upcoming competition in November ( Scotcheer 2, Dundee). With a great deal of hardwork, dedication and committment the girls gave outstanding performances, giving seniors 1st place and youths 2nd place within their divisions. All the hard work everyone has put in over the past 3 months has paid off and we are very proud of what the girls have achieved in such a short space of time. We would also like to thank parents for their continued support. We will also be launching our new team name at our fundraising disco
Starbirds Seniors on Friday 27th Nov. Our new team name will be 'Silver Saints'. Classes: Seniors - Wednesday Evening, 6.30 - 8.30pm in East Calder Church. Youths - Wednesday Evening, 6.30 - 8pm in Scout Hall, East Calder For further information, contact: Gillian Farrell on 07861 711153 or Elaine McLean - 07761 534748
