Message from the Editor Hello neighbours I would like to wish all our readers a very happy New Year. The Konect team is looking forward to a bright and cheerful 2011 and we hope you are too. We would love your input on Konect – what you like about it and what you’d like to see more of. In this issue, we are taking a look at the life and times of Currie’s famous son - the climber Dougal Haston, who not only climbed several new Scottish routes early in his career but was the first to climb the south face of Annapurna and the first to climb Mount Everest by the south-west face, before being tragically killed by an avalanche. I am no climber but I do love a good hike and this is my favourite time of year for energetic winter walks in the sunshine. There are plenty wonderful routes nearby and we suggest one you might like to try if you haven’t already.

Spring is just around the corner and it seems as though everything is just waiting to blossom, from the plants in the garden to the activities around us. Let’s get out there and enjoy it all. Congratulations to Mrs Jefferson of Balerno who won the crossword prize last month. This month, the Rotary Club are offering tickets for four to their Festival of Youth Music event, an evening of musical entertainment. See their advertisement on page 14.

When is a denture not a denture? Many people put up with loose and uncomfortable dentures, making eating difficult and lowering self-confidence. At No9 Dental Practice we can provide advanced alternatives to traditional dentures by using dental implants. These can fix a denture with a studlike fastening, keeping the denture firmly in place and removing the need for a plate in the roof of the mouth.

We recently fitted an implantretained denture for Mrs Callan, who said: “I am delighted with the result, I wish I had done it long before now. It has been worth every penny. I have been recommending it to all my friends. I can smile and chew confidently now.

Dougal Haston From Currie to Everest

U

p, always up. Currie lad Dougal Haston went from rambling around the Pentland Hills to being one of the first British climbers to conquer Everest, choosing a route up the South West face that had never been climbed before, and has not been attempted since. Born in Dolphin Road, Currie, in 1940 Dougal Haston was very much a local through and through despite the lack of local mountains! He had the urge to climb from a young age, and along with his friends he developed his skills as a boy climbing on the railway embankments and bridges in Currie. Exuberance turned to childhood mischief at times, such as climbing to the top of Currie Kirk and hanging items from the top, including women’s underwear. Along with his life-long friend James ‘Elly’ Moriarty, also of Dolphin Road, Haston was an original member of Currie Youth Club in 1954. It was with his fellow members of Currie Youth Club that Haston climbed his first serious rock aged 14 in 1954 – Curved Ridge at Glencoe, where they ascended one at a time using a hemp rope. In 1956, while a pupil at West Calder High School, Haston joined the Edinburgh J.M.C.S. (Junior Mountaineering Club of Scotland). He met Robin C Smith of Colinton under whose guidance Haston and some close companions climbed Glencoe including a bad-weather ascent of the difficult Revelation route. Haston had a thirst for climbing in poor weather where the challenges and the risks are so much greater. During his four years at Edinburgh University he climbed intensively across Scotland, the Lake District and the Alps, often making winter ascents. He did this climbing with the Edinburgh-based group of friends, and on leaving University it was with James Moriarty that he set up the Scottish Climbing School in 1963.

Haston’s exploits away from the climbing routes were as notorious as his feats of mountaineering were legendary. He was renowned for drinking, fighting, stealing and risky climbs. On one tragic occasion, he was drunk-driving, lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into three young men at Glencoe, seriously injuring two and killing the third. He was charged with a number of offences, convicted and jailed in Barlinnie (Glasgow) for 2 months.. In 1964 Haston moved away from Scotland to make a new home in Leysin, Switzerland. Scottish mountains were just not big enough for him! At Leysin his close friend, the American John Harlin, ran the International School of Mountaineering, and it was from here that Haston planned and executed his most spectacular expeditions, while working as a mountain guide. The first of these was a perilous attempt on the Direct route up Eiger, in winter. Together with John Harlin, he led a team in the glare of international media in 1966, all the more intense due to an 8-strong team of Germans attempting the same route at the same time. In scenes of high drama John Harlin died on the ascent as a result of a broken rope, while Haston and four of the Germans made the summit, severely frostbitten. The Germans all lost toes, but Haston and Chris Bonnington, thanks to state-of-the-art treatment in London retained theirs. This was the first direct ascent of the North Face and is a regarded as a climbing classic, told by Haston in his book Eiger Direct. No wonder Clint Eastwood hired him in 1969 as advisor on the film ‘The Eiger Sanction’. Haston was now a professional mountaineer, and replaced John Harlin as

head of the Mountaineering School. His financial model was to conduct the most spectacular climbing events possible to attract media attention, which could be turned into funding for more ascents. In this way Haston continued to lead a life on the edge. In 1970 he scaled the world’s most dangerous mountains at Annapurna, Nepal where one of his team died – maintaining the 40% death rate of these peaks. Haston’s first two attempts on Everest in 1971 and 1972, led by Chris Bonnington, were defeated, both being on the hitherto unconquered Southwest Face, and the latter in the treacherous post-monsoon weather. In 1975 in a successful expedition again led by Chris Bonnington, he reached the summit in the company of Doug Scott, a team member dying on the summit ridge. Haston and Scott had to spend the night following their summit sheltering in a hand-dug snow cave at the South Summit. This route has never been attempted again, and the Southwest Face is recognised as the most difficult.

Haston continued climbing after his Everest victory. Mountains were his domain, until when skiing alone off piste in La Riondaz, Leysin on 17th January 1977, he was killed by an avalanche - strangled by the polka dot scarf he liked to wear. He is commemorated in Currie by a plaque. Besides writing an autobiography and Eiger Direct, Haston also wrote a novel published post-humously called Calculated Risk. Eerily, the place Haston died in Leysin is the place from which his hero in the novel escapes. Thanks for Professor R. Campbell of the Scottish Mountaineering Club, for providing information on Dougal Haston prepared for the Currie and District Local History Society. The Society meets twice a month with a guest speaker at Gibson Craig Hall. See www.curriehistory.com.

lmost 2,000 Rotarians make up District 1020, an area covering the whole of the South of Scotland. And many reside in the Central Belt. But at a time when local and world events dictate it, Rotarians are required to do more and that's why they need more members — men and women of varying ages. Great Life It's a great life being a Rotarian and the Rotary Clubs in and around the Edinburgh area are inviting like-minded people to join them. It's not all work and no play. Contrary to rumour, Rotarians dance, play golf, enjoy each other's company and, yes, they party when the job is done. But what they excel at is getting their priorities right and coming to the aid of the less fortunate. Community-minded people of any age or gender are welcome and they would like to tell you more. The demands are varied — the rewards immense. Sounds exciting? It is — and you could be a part of this great team. Telephone or email Ralph Allardyce on 0131 333 1231

Socials Why not visit the Festival of Youth Music to be held on 23rd February? A Rotarian will be happy to accompany you, introduce you to local Club members and explain more about the variety of social gatherings, including golf outings, dinners, quizzes and speaker visits to name but a few. PIPER

Climate Change Action

Professor Pong oo addresses the Congrega Balerno Parish tion at Church

H

appy New Year from us all at PIPER and let’s hope that in 2011 we can all continue to cut our Carbon Footprints. We are delighted to announce that the pupils and parents from all six schools who filled in the forms in the folders will be saving 2000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year from going into the atmosphere…..if they keep their promises and pledges! Well done to you all and a big thank you from PIPER.

We are also pleased to announce that PIPER is providing recycling bins for the schools. Currie High, Nether Currie Primary and Dean Park have all been donated a total of 23 bins for plastic bottles (with the lids removed!), cans and juice cartons which are transferred to the big green lidded recycling bins. Thanks must go to the Janitors at these schools who are emptying the bins. Balerno High, Currie Primary and Juniper Green Primary may all be following suit soon.

n, Minister

uise Dunca ngoo with Lo Professor Po rish Church at Balerno Pa

We only have a few months of our funding left and we will be applying to the Climate Challenge Fund for more funding to continue our work here and for working with new schools and communities in the Pentland area. We would like to ask a small favour of you. Could you please email cchspiper@ blueyonder.co.uk if you support our bid for more funding. A simple “Yes” or “No” will suffice although other comments are welcome, especially ones like “How can I get involved in helping PIPER?”. Many thanks. It’s been cold this winter in the UK, breaking yet another climate record but figures produced by NASA show that the 2010 was the warmest year in NASA’s 130 year record of global temperatures. Over the oceans as well as over land, the average temperature was 14.65°C. That’s 0.65°C warmer than the average global temperature between 1951 and 1980, the period NASA scientists use as a basis for comparison. 2010 was slightly warmer than the previous warmest year, 2005, when the average temperature was 14.53°C. cchspiper@blueyonder.co.uk www.piperonline.org.uk

There is still a long journey ahead for all of us and PIPER has much work to do in all the homes and communities of Balerno, Currie and Juniper Green. 18

A WALK AWAY FROM IT ALL By Karen Murray

W

hen you want to get away from it all, there is nothing better than to head for the hills and the glorious thing about living in this area is that the hills are on your doorstep. A city surrounded by hills has to offer the best of both worlds so you need travel no distance (in fact you could just about walk directly from your doorstep) and you will very soon reach the Pentland Hills. The question then is which of the many walks to take. I have done a fair few of them since living here, from easy walks with a buggy to something a little tougher but still suitable for children and when I am escaping the children, something really energetic.

An added advantage to hills so close to home is that during the shorter winter months a fairly long and challenging walk can be managed without a long car journey using up the precious daylight. So if you are feeling the need for some peace and quiet, some energetic walking and some fabulous views, why not try the Flotterstone circular walk. This does mean getting in the car and driving across to Flotterstone on the A702 to start the walk. It’s a pretty challenging 22

route encompassing the highest and ďŹ nest of the Pentland hills including Turnhouse Hill, Carnethy Hill, Scald Law, East Kip and West Kip. The walk begins at the Pentland Hills Regional Park visitor centre at Flotterstone (just off the A702) where you will also notice the Flotterstone Inn, to which of course you will return! The Visitor Centre is great place to start this and other shorter walks as there is plenty of information available as well as some interactive exhibits to engage the younger members of your party. Spot the many birds from their window, pick up a map to help you on your way and then you are off. Follow the path from the centre to the tarmac road for around 500m until you see the green signpost to Scald Law on the left. Follow the track past the trees and Glencorse burn on the left until you come to a wooden gate and then a bridge. Crossing the bridge you are straight onto the path that accesses the hills. The climb to the top of Turnhouse Hill is well marked and fairly steep. The views back from here are superb and to the right you get a glimpse of Glencorse Reservoir is backed by Castlelaw. At the summit there are incredible 360 degree views - to the north Fife and the Forth Âť

A WALK AWAY FROM IT ALL By Karen Murray

» Bridges, to the west the view is over the wilder and more remote parts of the Pentland Hills Regional Park and to the south towards Penicuik you can see the site of the Battle of Rullion Green where General Thomas Dalziel defeated 900 Covenanters on 28 November 1666. You are now on the ridge and a grand traverse stretches ahead with superb views off to either side.

The path then descends, losing around 80m down to a bealach (the gaelic word for a mountain pass) where the ridge is crossed by a fence. Pass through a gate to begin the ascent to Carnethy Hill - the second highest of the Pentlands. The summit is marked by a cairn and is a wonderful viewpoint for all directions, both ahead to Scald Law with the Kips to its right and back towards Edinburgh. From here you can also see the narrow valley track that leads north west towards Bavelaw and Balerno. Once you have rested and enjoyed the views, continue on the ridge path, thankfully downhill, towards another bealach. An old right of way crosses the ridge here, known as the Kirk Road. If you were to go left you would come down to a layby on the A702, but the route to the right will take you to the top end of Loganlea Reservoir. If you have the energy, however, you’ll want to continue along the ridge first to take in

Scald Law , the highest of the Pentlands, before coming back to the Kirk Road. The top is marked by a trig point and the views fantastic once more. At this point you could extend your walk further by heading over what are known as the Kips and following the track to the Thriepmuir Reservoir and into Balerno itself! If that really does seem a step too far (and it certainly was for me), then you can make your way back to the Kirk Road and follow the track down to the Loganlea Reservoir - one of several in the Pentlands that supplies Edinburgh with drinking water. You pass through a gap in the fence and pick up the track that runs along by the reservoir, which soon becomes a tarred road running alongside the Logan burn. Next you reach the Glencorse Reservoir where the road passes a line of Scots pines. It then leads all the way back to the start at Flotterstone, al though an alternative is to take a signed path and track on the right after the reservoir that leads back via the old filter beds. Back where you started you can now enter the Flotterstone Inn where you can enjoy the refreshments it has to offer, safe in the knowledge that you have earned it. Walk Distance: 18 kms Length of time: around 6 hours

Vet’s Tip: Kennel Cough (Acute tracheobronchitis)

K

ennel cough is an extremely contagious disease of the respiratory system which affects dogs of all ages. The disease is caused by a mixture of viruses and bacteria, which spread easily wherever dogs congregate, hence the name Kennel Cough. This can be in boarding kennels, dog shows, training classes, or simply out on walks. Symptoms include a harsh dry cough, which may cause retching - it may even sound like the dog is choking; tiredness, loss of appetite and a mildly raised temperature. Very occasionally, the disease can progress to pneumonia. Old dogs or ones with other diseases are more at risk than fit healthy dogs.

Kennel cough can be treated with cough suppressants and antibiotics but of course it is far better that it is prevented by ensuring your dog has had the kennel cough vaccine. The vaccine (squirted into the nose) should have been administered within the last year otherwise they are at risk of catching this very unpleasant disease. Most good boarding kennels will insist that your dog is vaccinated before accepting them. If you do notice any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

Recipe

Baileys Chocolate Truffles Whoever thought a simple recipe could have such sophisticated results? These delicious truffles make a gorgeous present when placed in a lined gift box or cellophane-wrapped and tied with a bow. But if you’re staying in on Valentines day, a pile of these little delicacies will go down perfectly with a glass of wine and a good film. Before making these truffles, remember that they do require time to set. However, you can make them in advance as they’ll keep in the freezer for up to 6 weeks and around a week in the fridge. Ingredients: 100g plain chocolate 50ml double cream 14g butter 1 tbsp Baileys or another liqueur For coating afterwards: good quality plain, milk or white chocolate. Recipe: 1) Pour the cream into a saucepan and bring to the boil. 2) Break your chocolate into chunks and add to the cream, stirring until melted and thoroughly mixed. 3) Remove the pan from the heat and add the butter, stirring until smooth. 4) Add the Baileys or liqueur and pour the whole mixture into a bowl. 5) Place the bowl in the fridge for around an hour until the temperature has gone down but the mixture has not yet set. 6) With an electric whisk, beat the mixture until it has lightened in both colour and texture. 7) Replace in the fridge and leave overnight. It will be worth the wait, promise! 8) Remove the bowl and with a teaspoon, take small amounts and roll them into balls. Try not to handle the mixture too much - roughly-shaped truffles will look fine once they’re coated. 9) Finally, roll the truffles in either cocoa powder, chopped nuts, desiccated coconut or grated chocolate. For the best results however, dip them in melted chocolate and put them on greaseproof paper in the fridge to set.

Chocolate has been a delicacy for over fifteen hundred years, traced back as far as the ancient Aztecs. However, it was not until the Victorian period that chocolate became a solid food. Before then, it was enjoyed first as a spiced drink made from ground roasted cocoa beans and chilli, and later as a sweeter drink. The Aztecs of Mexico prized their cocoa beans above gold, using them as currency (100 bought a slave), they even paid their taxes in bean-form! Britain was rather late in joining the chocoholism that was sweeping the world. When English buccaneers boarded what they presumed was a Spanish treasure ship in 1579, they found it loaded with ‘dried sheep droppings’ and subsequently burned it down. An expensive mistake, indeed! We got there eventually however, with the first Chocolate House opening in London in 1657 - though it wasn’t until 1847 that the first solid chocolate appeared, courtesy of Fry & Sons of Bristol. Fact Quakers were the pioneers of chocolatemaking for centuries, owning the likes of Fry, Rowntree and Cadbury. Why should I eat it? When eaten in moderation, dark chocolate can lower blood pressure, is full of antioxidants, aids circulation, stimulates the brain and has antidiarrhoeal effects. Other research has suggested that chocolate is good for a cough, with the theobromine ingredient being nearly a third more effective than codeine. Why shouldn’t I eat it? The lighter varieties aren’t quite so good for you and large consumption can lead to obesity. There are even some concerns over lead poisoning from some kinds of chocolate! Remember, the theobromine in chocolate can render it as toxic to some animals such as cats and dogs - so keep an eye on that Yorkie!
