Message from the Editor Hello neighbours Welcome to the March issue of the Konect Directory – the month we can start to really look forward to spring. Don’t forget the clocks change on Sunday 27th March, so we can start to enjoy the lighter evenings. We have a St Patrick’s Day theme for our history article this month - taking a look at Irish immigrants into the area in the 19th century and the huge contribution they made particularly to the transport infrastructure. Along with all our usual columns and features there are also a few new local businesses in the magazine this month. It’s good to see new businesses setting up despite the difficult economic conditions, so do give them your support.

Congratulations to Janet Emerson of East Calder who won the crossword prize last month. This month you could win a gift voucher to spend on eco-friendly and natural products from Wikaniko, so turn to the crossword on page 42 and try your luck. Thanks for reading the Konect Directory.

Irish immigration

W

e take for granted our railways, roads and canals nowadays, the latter mainly used for leisure by most of us. While ongoing work makes our infrastructure what it is today, it is good to pause and look into the history of the hard labour that went into cutting the earth in the first place, many years before powerful machines could help. “Navvies”, many of them Irish immigrants, made a major contribution to the industrial development of Scotland in the 19th century by working on the canals, railways, roads, mining and other industries. While Irish workers had always come across for seasonal work harvesting in Scotland, the 19th century saw a mass immigration, this time including entire families permanently leaving Ireland. The first significant wave of immigration was in the canal building period. Canal diggers – navigators – or “navvies” as they became known, in central Scotland were Irish immigrants and Highlanders lured by the prospect of steady work. They worked on canal projects all over Scotland, following the work from project to project. Most locally to us, the Union Canal, 31.5 miles long between Edinburgh and Falkirk, was dug in just 4 years between 1818 and 1822. No accommodation was provided for the workers by the canal proprietors, they had to find lodgings and make do however they could. At either end of the canal in Edinburgh and Falkirk it wasn’t too difficult to find lodgings, but in between there was little or no accommodation to be found, and the families had to accompany the wageearner.

Union Cana

l

A newspaper at the time reported: “Along the banks of the Union Canal certain edifices have been erected which strike the traveller with no little astonishment. These are huts erected by Irish labourers upon some few vacant spots of ground belonging to the canal proprietors and are pointed out to strangers on the passage boats as great curiosities. Each, of course, is more wretched than another, and presents a picture of squalid poverty which is new to the people on this side of the Channel. One of them, with the exception, perhaps, of a few sticks, is composed entirely of rotten straw; its dimensions would not suffice for a pig-stye.” Scottish industry became very successful in the 1840s, coinciding with the agricultural disaster in Ireland which led to the “potato famine” and many thousands of Irish fleeing famine conditions made their way to Scotland. The population of Irish in Scotland increased 90% during the 1840s. They worked on the burgeoning railway

network – the construction of the last canals overlapped with the first railways - textiles, and later on in mining. Large numbers of Irish navvies worked on the excavation of the compensation reservoirs in the 1840’s outside Balerno and along the edge of the Pentlands. The Irish were also contributors to the man-power in the mines of West Lothian, and formed a significant proportion of the population of mining towns such as West Calder, Addiewell and Pumpherston. In fact figures for 1891 show, for example, that 30% of the population of Pumpherston was Irish. The Irish navvies were treated with contempt. Not only religious differences (the vast majority were Catholics), or historical enmity between the nations, but a range of other factors made them unpopular. They were prepared to work for less money than Scots or English, thus lowering the general wage level for the work they did. They also earned themselves a reputation for rough noisy behaviour in their few leisure hours. There were many complaints from the locals, the most common being for drunken and riotous behaviour. A parish minister complained of the Irish navvies - “They lowered very much the moral tone of the district, from which, he feared, it might never recover.” They were seen as carriers of disease; ‘Irish fever’ was the name given to Typhus fever and although prevalence was higher among the Irish this was due to poverty. Nevertheless, despite the intolerance and discrimination, from the 1850s on there were distinct Irish communities in Scotland with both formal and informal social support groups.

New Business for West Lothian ADVERTISMENT

i

Care Pet Cremation and Burial Services is a brand new business in West Lothian and I would like to introduce myself and the business to its residents and pet owners. My name is Alex Baxter and after realising the lack of such a local service within West Lothian I decided to investigate current practices and provide a more caring and personal service to pet owners. Having lost my pet in 2010, the decision to offer this service became my ambition. I hadn’t given any thought to what we would do when she died, and when she did I was so grief-stricken I couldn’t make decisions which seemed so cold and uncaring. Had a local service like this been offered to me prior to my pet’s illness I would have felt relieved that someone else cared as much for my dog as I had. At iCare Pet Crem, we aim to provide the same level of dignity and professionalism to your pets as we would if they were human. They would be collected and handled sensitively by iCare Pet Crem staff, including collection from your local veterinary practice should they die there, and would then be transported in an iCare vehicle and never with clinical waste, which is unfortunately how some current practices operate. Your pet would be cremated individually so you are guaranteed to receive your pet’s ashes, which again is something that is not always carried out elsewhere. Our pets are integrated into our families and into our hearts and when they die, we grieve for them in the same way as losing a family member. At iCare Pet Crem, we are offering a registration and pre-payment plan so that you don’t need to worry about these final details in your time of grief. Most of us don’t think

To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638

about the death of our family pets, but when the time comes, you can be secure in the knowledge that your pet is given a caring, sensitive and dignified send-off. Your pet’s ashes can be collected or hand delivered to your address in a scatter tube and suede bag or a casket or urn of your choice. Sometimes people don’t know what to do when their pet dies, so this method allows you to decide whether you would choose to bury the scatter tube, scatter your pet’s ashes in their favourite place, or sometime in the future transfer their ashes to a sealed casket, tribute box or picture frame. There is no rush to make these decisions, we will support and guide you all the way. To register your Pet with iCare Pet Crem please call us or visit our website and complete the on-line registration form. This service is free and can make such a difference coping with a loss in the future. iCare Pet Crem is a West Lothian business here to serve the needs of West Lothian pet owners. Please feel free to give us a call at any time or visit our website for more information on the full list of services we offer including our Pet register and Pre Payment plan. 11

The Missionaries at Bandawe, Malawi By Maureen McIntyre

I

n 2005 I was lucky enough to travel to the country of Malawi in central Africa. As part of my trip I visited an old mission station called Bandawe which overlooks Lake Malawi and was the home of many Scottish Missionaries in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s. On the shores of the lake lie the graves of around 15 of these missionaries. The gravestones look out over the magnificent Lake Malawi and are tended by the local people who are incredibly proud of their Scottish connections and are keen to show the graves to all visitors to the mission. Due to the location and age of the graves many of the memorials were unreadable but I was able to record the details of around 7 of them. One stone that was particularly well preserved commemorated the short life of Donald Stewart McMinn who died in September 1902 aged 2 months and his mother Lizzie Ann McMinn who died in October 1902. I decided to research the family on this stone and I eventually made contact with the family of Lizzie Ann’s husband who was called Robert Donald McMinn. Robert’s grandson who is South African had known that his grandfather was married early in his missionary career and that his wife had died, but he did not know what had happened to neither her nor his grandfathers first born child. My information and photographs enabled him to solve a mystery in his family and Lizzie Ann and Donald Stewart have now been added to the McMinn family tree. Robert Donald McMinn was born in Dailly in Ayrshire in 1870 the son of a Blacksmith and he married Lizzie Ann Stewart on 15th August 1901. He led a full and active life as a preacher and missionary, returning to Scotland to visit his family but his heart was

22

in Africa and he died in 1956 in Cape Town, South Africa at the age of 86. This story proves the real value of gravestones which are a valuable source of information for researchers. Many of the cemeteries in Scotland have been documented and photographed, mostly by local family history researchers. These will prove invaluable if you are unable to visit a particular area and also helps preserve the information written on the stones.

Shore Walk By Karen Murray

M

y favourite kind of walk has to be one involving water - a riverside ramble, a stride along the seashore, looping around a loch... fresh air, great views while getting exercise. A real favourite at this time of year is the shore walk that takes in the Dalmeny Estate near South Queensferry wonderful at all times of year, but in late Winter, early Spring there are hundreds of gorgeous snowdrops to be enjoyed too.

Forth Rail

At the pier there is a white gate by a cottage leading into the Dalmeny Estate and here you will get your first view of the carpet of white snowdrops. Drink them in as you walk along the path through the woodland. Every now and then you can see the shore and the boats sitting out on the Firth. The path ultimately leads all the way to Cramond and depending on your time, your energy levels and how you are feeling, you can walk the entire route, rest in Cramond and walk back; walk the route to Cramond and get the bus back or do what I usually do - head off the path half way along, go down to the shore and do a loop, returning to South Queensferry and the Hawes Inn.

Bridge

The walk begins at the Hawes Pier opposite the Hawes Inn in South Queensferry - a place worth a visit as it dates back to at least the 17th century and is featured in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped. It also features a roaring log fire - great for warming up cold feet and hands if the weather is inclement. Wait until you have finished your walk and you can feel your warming drink is well deserved. If the Lifeboat Station shop is open you can pop in and do your bit, then take the path down to the left just after the station which heads to the shoreline, taking you to Longcraig Pier, one of several which were used as ferry points 30

to cross the Forth. You might spot a seal basking on the pier if you are lucky. Personally I haven’t spotted one yet but I live in hope.

Snowdrops at Dalmeny

There are several ways of doing the loop but my preference is to keep to the path (and the snowdrops) until it becomes tarmacked, emerges from the woodlands and Dalmeny House comes into view on the right beyond Dalmeny Golf Course. Dalmeny House was built in 1817 to a Tudor Gothic design by William Wilkins. A rare type of artificial stone »

called Coadestone was used in the more decorative elements on the house. The house was used as an auxiliary hospital during WWI and during WWII the stables to the rear were used by the Army for a Barrage Balloon Unit.

»

As the golf course opens up on the left, the footpath skirts the edge of the woodland and then follows the shoreline along the golf course. From here you can continue toward Cramond passing Snab Point and Eagle Rock, but you can also go right down to the shoreline and turn back towards South Queensferry. You will get views along the coast to Barnbougle Castle and across the Forth.

It is not always easy to walk along the shore - it can be hard going on the sand with a few rocks to negotiate, but it is worth it for the wonderful views across the Forth and for what you might just dig up on the beach. Next stop is Hound Point, which, according to folklore, is haunted by a dog owned by Sir Richard Mowbray who died on the Crusades. The views from Hound Point are magnificent with Inchcolm Island and its old abbey as well as the spectacular Forth Bridges. Known for the BP tanker berth, Hound Point is often avoided, but it is well worth the walk for the views. At this point you can head back towards the main path you first walked along. As you reach it you will see up the hill within the woodland, the remains of World War I gun emplacements, part of the Forth naval defences. Enjoy the snowdrops once more as you retrace your steps back to the Lifeboat station in South Queensferry and to that well deserved warming drink in front of the fire at the Hawes Inn.

Barnbougle Ca

Barnbougle Castle is on the site of a medieval tower house built by the Mowbray family which was destroyed and then rebuilt in the 19th century. At Barnbougle the fifth Earl of Rosebery (Prime Minister) practised his speeches in a gallery hall built for the purpose. Unfortunately Barnbougle Castle is not open to the public but it is worth a walk past. Continue along the shoreline - kids will love beachcombing and searching for shells - until you reach Fishery Cottage. This place gets its name from the salmon netting that took place until the 1950s when the stocks started to decline. 32

Keep up to date with all the latest Kirknewton new s!

Notes of the Kirknewton Community Develoment Trust AGM The Annual General Meeting of the Kirknewton Community Development Trust took place on Thursday 28th January 2011. An upbeat and jovial meeting, the hour and a half whizzed along with good news, healthy banter and the sense that the objectives of the organisation are progressing in a positive direction. Chair Stewart McKenna kept proceedings tight and at a pace, galloping through approval of the minutes, the budget, the auditors, changes to the constitution and re-electing directors. Although these items of business are the usual lynchpins of an AGM, this meeting was about questions from trust members, encouraging others to get involved and a report on the actions of the last year and what is to come over the next twelve months. The work of Lisa Morton and the Powerdown team, who are managed by the Trust, helped to ensure a healthy turn out of the membership who heard about a number of current projects such as encouraging the growth and purchase of local food, promoting cycling and developing walk audits in the village. The success of the energy visits, the support and advice being given by the local energy advisors was also recognised by the meeting. Partnerships with the Allotments Group had, quite literally, born fruit. Successful local campaigns, such as the redevelopment of the play park, are leading to further discussion about improving the village green space. A food waste collection scheme will also be launched shortly, with bin champions being recruited throughout the village. Work has also begun on developing a Community Resource Hub on ground donated to the Trust by local resident Malcolm Scott It is hoped that all this good work by the Powerdown team will continue with further

funding for the next financial year currently the subject of a new bid to Climate Challenge Fund. Funding from the Big Lottery, in the form of a technical assistance grant to develop the Anaerobic Digester Plant project, was reported. This has led to the employment of Tony Foster as the Trust Development Officer who will help to provide a complete development plan for a £1,000,000 bid to the lottery. A recent meeting with the Lottery advisor had suggested possible other income streams being available for ideas that come out of the Community Consultation that took place in February. Everyone was encouraged to put forward their views and attend the Drop-In session on Sunday 6th February, from 10:00 am to 6pm. The Board asked approval for the right to buy available land in the village if suitable for the trust to do so and subject to the availability of finance. This was agreed unanimously. With the Board looking at new projects, such as a Micro-Hyrdo scheme at Harperigg, and engaging in discussions on wind energy developments that may provide income to support projects in the village for the future the next twelve months look to be very exciting indeed. Everyone in the village is encouraged to join the Trust as a member, to help strengthen partnerships, improve our lottery bids and to help support our ‘Right to Buy’ options. Finally, with potential constitutional reform across the whole development trust sector ringing in our ears (but that is another story!) we bid the Kirknewton Community Development Trust Annual General Meeting adieu for another year.

KCDT are pleased to announce two events in March: Wood for Winter Warmth: A free seminar and discussion Thursday 10th March, 7:00pm, Kirknewton Village Hall. And what is the best wood for burning? Is my chimney adequate? Come and learn about buying wood-fuel, how to choose a woodstove and tips for wood storage and management in this 90 minutes of free chat from two experts in their field. Guest Speakers: Simon Lockwood, Scottish Native Woods (Area Manager Central Lowlands ) Stewart Mckenna (founder and owner of Forest Fire Edinburgh, wood burning stove specialist) Join us at Kirknewton Village Hall with your “Burning Questions”. Refreshments available. Meals and Wheels in the Park - A Sustainable Transport and Local Food Event Saturday 26th March, 12.00 – 16.00, Kirknewton Park Come and join us in the park! The will be a cycle stunt team, novelty bikes, cycle circuit races, Dr Bike and advice on travelling more sustainably. You will be able to find out more about Kirknewton’s new local walking group.

Thank you for loving Kirknewton A very big thank you to everyone who came to the I Love Kirknewton Drop in event or has contributed to the recent Kirknewton Community Consultation. We would also like to thank everyone who spread the word about the consultation and helped make it a success. Over 100 people came to the drop in event, three times more than expected. In total we have collected over 200 of your views and the opinions of 190 pupils from the Kirknewton Primary School. These views and ideas are currently being collated and will inform a Community Development Plan for the village and the £1,000,000 lottery application. Come and see your BIG Ideas... A short presentation on the initial findings from the I Love Kirknewton consultation will be made by Tony Foster, Development Officer, at the Village Hall on Thursday 10th March from 7pm. This will be followed by a day presenting ‘Your BIG Ideas’ on Sunday 13th March in the Village Hall from 10am til 5pm. This will be your opportunity to help make your favourite ideas happen. As an example – if you said you want a brand new community centre we will provide a map of Kirknewton and you can choose your ideal location for the new facility.

There will be a local food market. After the Village Feast last year many of you said you would like an event with market stalls selling local produce so this is what we have done. You will be able to buy food from the village barbecue and have a drink from the beer tent too. You will be able to buy tokens for the village barbecue and the beer tent on the day but it would be very helpful for us to know roughly how many people are coming. Please email lisakirknewton@gmail.com, phone us on 01506 883988 or pop in to our shop on Main Street next to the Chippy.

(Don’t forget England play Scotland at the 6 Nations rugby that day so if you don’t want to miss the game come before 3pm or if you want to escape the game come and see us between 3 and 5pm!)

You will also be able to find out about the work of the Kirknewton Community Development Trust and how to join if you are not already a member. We look forward to seeing you there. To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638

Vet’s Tip: Pet Allergies

A

s new plants and flowers burst into life this spring, so too do the symptoms of hay fever. But humans aren’t the only ones who suffer. Pollen in the air can trigger an allergic reaction in dogs and cats. Instead of sneezing, pets typically have itchy skin and will persistently scratch, lick and bite to get relief. If they keep doing this dogs and cats can create sores that become secondary infections. If the symptoms occur for less than three months of the year, oral medications may be used to control itching. In more severe cases, pets are given a skin allergy test to pinpoint what it is they are sensitive to. Your vet can then give injections of

the allergic material in minimal doses to build up immunities in your pet’s system. Other treatments for allergies include anti-histamines, steroids and medicated shampoos. If you suspect that your pet may be suffering from seasonal allergies, please visit your vet.

Recipe Irish Stew

Ingredients: • 4 lamb chops (see below ingredients for more details and alternatives) • 4 medium potatoes • 4 medium carrots • 4 medium onions • Sprig of fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme • 450 ml of lamb stock (hot water and two lamb stock cubes) • 2 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley • 2 good shakes of Worcestershire Sauce (Lea & Perrins) • 1 tablespoon of Pearl Barley (optional) • 50g butter • 50g flour • Salt • Pepper Recipe: 1) Trim some of the fat from each of the chops and put the fat in a medium heated frying pan. This will melt some of the lamb fat for use in the next couple of steps. Set the oven to 180C / 350F / Gas Mark 4. 2) Chop the onions into rough chunks. Peel the potatoes and cut into 4 parts. Cut the carrots into larger than normal chunks. Irish Stew is a rustic menu and part of its charm is that the ingredients are roughly cut into large chunks. Saves on preparation time as well! 3) After 5 to 10 minutes, remove the fatty pieces from the frying pan and throw them away. Fry each lamb chop in the fat for about 3 minutes at medium temperature, turning half way through. Put the lamb chops in an oven-proof casserole dish and fry the carrots and onions in the remaining fat for 2 minutes - turn frequently. 40

4) Put the onions and carrots over the lamb chops in the casserole dish. Season with salt and pepper. Add the Worcestershire Sauce, pearl barley and lamb stock. Finally add the potatoes on top - don’t mix them in with the other ingredients. The aim is to let them be steam cooked over the other ingredients. Add some more salt and pepper to season the potatoes. Put the casserole (covered) in the preheated oven and cook for 1 hour. 5) Make roux to thicken the gravy by melting the butter on a medium heat in a pan, then whisk (or vigorously fork in) the flour. Cook for 2 minutes whisking all the time. 6) Take the casserole dish from the oven and pour off most of the gravy into the pan of roux (be careful, the casserole dish will be hot). Mix in the thyme. Quickly blend the gravy and roux together with your whisk or fork. Add the thickened gravy back into the casserole and scatter the top with the parsley. Check the seasoning and add salt and pepper if necessary. 7) Return it (covered) to the oven for ten minutes. Serve onto hot plates. Any red wine will go well with Irish Stew, but a glass of Guinness is probably the best accompaniment of all!

Gone to France By Carla

Carla usually writes our children’s book review. I’m on a language exchange in France for six months. It’s through a charity called ALLEF, and so far it’s been very nice!

going to fish spiders sometime..... sea spiders!). My new family has taken me in well and there’s no hurry back home!

There are a lot of differences between France and Scotland.... the most obvious is that they drive on the wrong side of the road! I often make the mistake of getting in the car on the left, and wondering why the wheel’s there. Another difference is the keyboard. It’s all upside down.... I don’t usually make so many mistakes in a sentence! And the food....it’s good! The bread is delicious - there are loads of different kinds, and there are bakeries on every corner.

….and we don’t

school here!

As I am currently living in Brittany, and as it’s a stone’s throw from the sea we eat a lot of sea food. I’ve eaten plaice, and my first mussel... it wasn’t too bad, it tasted like very salty, mussel-y seaweed, but as the others explained, ‘’It isn’t very dead...’’. It moved when I poked it. As it happens, the school I go to here teaches German and Latin, and I chose to learn both. I can now say ‘’I like to read the book’’ in French, German, English and Latin! At home in Scotland I usually do a Korean martial art called Kuk Sool Won, but they don’t do that in France. Judo or Karate yes, but not Kuk Sool Won. So instead I’m doing a type of French martial art called ‘Canne de Combat’, or combat canes. It’s basically moves and forms (attack, defence and useless but fancy) with a short stick. I love it! So I’m having a good time over here. An exchange is good fun, I’m meeting loads of people, trying out new things (I’m To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638

Your child can become truly bilingual, living in a selected German or French family. A fantastic experience where the benefits last a life-time.
