Message from the Editor Hello neighbours The Konect Directory is two years old this month. We’ve learnt a lot about our local area over the past two years, through research for articles in the magazine and through speaking to many local business owners, to people who organise community and charity events in our villages and of course the local people who distribute the magazine every month. A big thank you to everyone involved, and to our advertisers who make it all possible. Please continue to support local businesses – they help keep village life alive. As always, if you organise community events of any sort in this area do contact us and we can help let people know about it. I enjoyed learning about Hatton House for the history article this month. Almost nothing is left of it now except the ruined gates that we drive past on the A71

(pictured on the front cover) but the site has a long history and was important in Scottish affairs for centuries. Congratulations to Mrs Anne Hennessy of Kirknewton who won the crossword prize last month. This month The Grapes in East Calder are offering a meal for two. They have a new chef and a new menu, so try the crossword on page 42 for your chance to win a meal there.

For a number of years now we have been placing Botox injections to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles. Sometimes patients are keen to have these after having some work done on their smile and wanting to compliment this with 9 East Main Street smoother lines around their Broxburn face and sometimes it is quite EH52 5AB independent to dental work. 01506 857717 It needn’t be something extreme, but is usually a gentle softening of lines which can last around 4-6 months.

During April we will treat your frown lines for only £99. Hope that makes you smile.

Hatton House – grandest of them all

T

hese days you don’t need Mons Meg, the giant cannon now at the top of Edinburgh Castle, to gain access to the site of Hatton House from the A71. But in 1453 King James II accompanied his massive flagship weapon here to besiege Hatton in order to evict clan Douglas followers, in a tale of regal plotting, murder and revenge... At that time “Haltoun” was a massive L-shaped tower house with walls 3 metres thick, owned by the Lauder family, built by Alan de Lauder in 1377. With tensions rising between King James II and the Douglases, Sir William Lauder of Haltoun was a confidant of both the King and the 8th Earl of Douglas. The King summoned the Earl of Douglas to Stirling Castle in 1452, and Lauder was the King’s personal messenger sent to escort the Earl. When the King murdered Douglas there Haltoun Tower was seized by outraged Douglas followers and during the struggle Sir William Lauder was killed. The king personally led the siege to take Haltoun Tower back. Crown accounts of the time refer to the cost of transporting “the great

bombard” (Mons Meg) and go on to list costs for stone cannon balls, javelins and arrows, the construction of a movable hut to protect the quarrymen hewing their way through the walls and all the trappings of a well fitted-out siege. Hatton remained in the Lauder family until 1653. It was a significant local stronghold and the Lauders were an important family who played their part in current affairs. During the reign of Mary Queen of Scots, the 4th Earl of Bothwell was, it seems, “favourable to the laird of Haltowne “ ; and it was in his house that he slept on the night of 23rd April 1567, before his abduction of the Queen. In 1653 the Hatton estate passed into the hands of Charles Maitland, later the 3rd Earl of Lauderdale, who had married into the Lauder family, and he began to transform it from a crude fortified tower into a magnificent country house. Around the ancient tower house he added wings and turrets. He also started remodelling the grounds on a lavish scale, turning it into one of the most elegant country estates of the time. He held high office in the Scottish Parliament and was appointed Master General of the Scottish Coinage in 1661. He took opportunity to run three large-scale coinage frauds and it is generally acknowledged that he used treasury funds to create his impressive new estate. Besides the coinage

frauds, which came to light in a judicial enquiry in 1682, he was suspected in 1689 of acting “contirar to the government” of William III and sent to prison. Hatton House was searched for “cannon, armes and amonutione.” Six muskets and cannon were found, confiscated and taken to Edinburgh Castle. Proven ill-gotten gains don’t seem to have had consequences for the Hatton estate. A 16th century visitor to Hatton wrote that “there is no residence in the Lothians west of Edinburgh to compare with Hatton House save Hopetoun.” By this time it had over fifty bedrooms and stabling for seventy horses on grounds of 240 acres. By the early years of the eighteenth century, Hatton was one of the noblest residences in all Scotland. The top of the original tower was a balustraded viewing platform commanding views of the surrounding countryside and hills. The main approach to the house was via a mile-long grand avenue from the east and was lined by a double row of oaks, beeches and limes. There was a large walled garden, bowling green, formal rose garden, and terraced area in front of the house and beyond it a “wilderness” complete with an artificial lake. The Maitland family reign at Hatton ended in 1792 when it was sold by the 8th Earl. The property changed hands many times. It was purchased in 1797 by Mr James Gibson (afterwards Sir James Gibson-Craig, Baronet of Riccarton), who broke up the estate and sold it off in portions for speculative gain. The house itself went to Rev., Dr. Thomas Davidson for £14,000. The Renaissance gateway, which can be seen today on the A71 near the intersection with Linburn Road, was originally located half-way along the main eastern approach avenue to Hatton House. The date ANNO DOM 1692 is engraved on the keystone of the arch. It was moved to its current location on the Edinburgh road by Captain Davidson in 1829 (that date is also engraved on it).

The upper part of the antique ornamental ironwork of this gateway is said to have been wrought by one of the Earls who enjoyed ironwork - the Eastern Pavilion of Hatton House was known as Lord Lauderdale’s Forge, where tradition has it one of the Earls had a forge. The house had several owners over the years and many famous visitors. Until, on the evening of 25th February 1952 the owner returning from Edinburgh found the house had mysteriously caught fire. The roof and upper floor were completely destroyed, while the other floors were extensively damaged by water. The Evening Dispatch of 26th February said: “One portion after another of the house, which contained four floors, was involved in the blaze, until there was no part of the building which was free from the flames.” The ruins were taken down and the stones removed to various unknown locations; the estate was sold off in pieces. All that remains today are two corner pavilions, some of the walls and of course the Western Gate on the A71. Despite some decline in its last decades before the 1952 fire, Hatton House was one of the most spectacular of grand Scottish homes from its founding in the 14th century through murder, fraud, royal favours and clan battles to the sad romantic remains of today.

Entrepreneurship – is alive and well

E

ntrepreneurship is alive and well in the Calders area and it’s good to see new businesses starting up. A huge amount of time and effort goes into setting up a small business, as well as the risk of deciding to leave a job or even losing a job and deciding to put your skills to use for yourself. So this month we are highlighting some new start-ups in the area. Have a read through these brief stories and if you need any of these services, try these new businesses and give them your support!

SC Tec Ltd.

Colin Knox, from East Calder, is the proprietor of SC Tec Ltd, a new computer repair and installation business. Colin says, “I have been repairing computers for 12 years. I decided back in 2006 that it was time for me to get the relevant qualifications in the IT sector to start my own business. After gaining the qualifications needed I worked with a small IT company in Livingston to gain further skills and knowledge. SC-Tec Ltd was established in late January this year. We aim to provide our customers, both residential and business, with affordable computer repairs and a professional customer service, 7 days a week. All types of computer or laptop repairs, upgrades or installations are undertaken.” See SC Tec’s website at www.sc-tec.co.uk

good, fast and great value car wash ‘en route’ to their destination - no detours required!” The family has run a small road haulage and commercial vehicle repair business since 1987, initially at Whitehill Farm, then the Camps and most recently from Elmbank. They employ 6 local people and mother, father, son and daughter in law all have an active part in running the business. The move to Elmbank with its large yard gave them the opportunity to diversify, hence the new car wash business. (They also have an industrial unit ready to let). Tinos, who lives in East Calder, operates the equipment. They also provide a valet service which you can book by calling 07879 644916.

A71 Hot Foam Car Wash

Fabric Addiction! V

isiting Marys’ Patch is like stepping into an Aladdin’s cave of fabrics, textures, colours and all things patchwork. The shop is owned and run by Sara Brown. Growing up in Dundee, Sara was surrounded by handicraft and fabrics; her mother made their own clothes and always had a bag of scraps. Sara learned to knit and sew at an early age and loved all types of craft; her teenage rebellion, she comments wryly, consisted of knitting cardigans and bobbin lace items for charity! The family moved to Balerno when Sara was 14, where she started in the third year at the brand new Balerno High School. After studying Modern History at university, she worked for a while in the publishing industry, doing freelance editorial work for scientific and medical journals. She kept up her interest in needlecraft, although it wasn’t until she attended a day workshop in patchwork at Currie High School with her mother, that she got hooked on patchwork and knew she had found her calling. It was still a while before Marys’ Patch opened though. Whilst living in the States when her own children were little, Sara’s nearest shop was a fabric shop. There, while her husband was at work and with her toddlers in tow, Sara fed her fabric addiction. The craft business started off as more of a hobby than a serious business, selling an eclectic mix of items including beads, hooks and eyes, velcro dots, elastics, buttons, ribbons, novelty yarns, as well as items that Sara had made herself. She was part of a craft co-operative in East Lothian, and attended craft fairs once a month in different locations. In 2004 she decided to find a permanent home for a craft fair, and so the Balerno Craft Fair was born in the Community Centre. With her network of craft businesses from the co-op, Sara got the craft fair going, promoting it with leaflets and posters

16

around Currie and Balerno. The fair still Sara Brown runs today alongside the farmers’ market every month. She has an eye for unusual fabrics and found that customers were mainly interested in where she got her fabrics from. So the focus of the business shifted to selling fabrics rather than the finished handicrafts. After five years at premises in West Calder, Marys’ Patch has recently moved to The Barn at Veitch’s Garden Centre, East Calder. “The Barn is the shop that I envisaged having for a long time”, says Sara. It is light and airy and she has set up a wall of fabrics. There is plenty of space for teaching and plenty of parking space. The only disadvantage, she laughs, is that she spends far too much in the garden centre – gardening is her other passion. Besides selling materials for patchwork and quilting, teaching has always been an important part of Marys’ Patch. There are currently around 70 students at different levels and they have won three competition prizes in the past two years at the Scottish Quilt Show at Ingliston. True to the origins of patchwork, nothing at Marys’ Patch is wasted. Their fabric scraps are just strips, and along with cotton reels, fabric cores and other bits and pieces they are given to local schools, scout groups and other organisations for children to use in craft projects. Even the packets that threads come in are re-used as seed planters! The only thing they throw away is the plastic wrapping that the rolls of fabric come in. So whether you are addicted to textiles, just like to do some needlework as a hobby, pop into Marys’ Patch in East Calder and Sara and her team will be delighted to help out.

Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham

Spare a Prayer

P

robably now more than at any other time in our lives we should be grateful for all we are, have and are able to do. When we see the catastrophes in Japan unfold and watch on in horror the suffering and despair people are experiencing as they look for their loved ones, shelter and food, it makes me aware of all the gifts I have in my life. The gifts I speak of aren’t wrapped up in fancy paper. They’re the every day things I take for granted like clean water and fresh air.

is a true gift because there are people in the world who don’t. If you have peace in your mind and in your heart then this is also a gift because there are others in the world who are suffering and in turmoil… Your thoughts are energy and energy travels to where it is focused. Don’t underestimate the power of your thoughts and prayers as you send forward thoughts of compassion, love and courage for the people to have the strength to go forward and find a new and better way of life after all their suffering.

I once heard someone say if you have a home this is a true gift because there are people in the world who don’t. If you have food and clean water then this

What’s in a name?

Family history column by Maureen McIntyre

W

hen your children are born the responsibilities are endless, from keeping them safe and warm to making sure they have the best possible start in life. Most of us will carry on using our family surname but our parents have the responsibility of giving us our forenames. During the course of my research I have come across many very unusual and obscure forenames. How many of us have an Aunty INA? The Scottish tradition of adding INA to the end of male forenames is not nearly as common now as it was 100 years ago and I have seen many cases of this. My Great Aunt INA was ALEXANDERINA but I have also come across the less common HUGHINA, MALCOLMINA and HECTORINA. Perhaps the most fascinating story I have come across were the forenames of some of the children of Duncan McKay, an ironstone miner who was born around 1829 and lived all of his life in Old and New Kilpatrick, West Dunbartonshire. Duncan married Margaret Service in 1853 and they had 9 children. Duncan also had one illegitimate child. Catherine, Colin, Angus and Janet were born between 1853 and 1860 but when the couple’s next child was born in 1865 things started to change. Somehow this miner from Scotland suddenly became fascinated with historical figures. Thomas Stonewall Jackson McKay (known as Thomas) was born on 9th March 1865. This was two years after Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, one of the most famous confederate generals from the American Civil War died in America. Washington Clyde Lincoln McKay (known as Washington) was born on 1st May 1867. George Washington was the first president of the United States and Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. Lord Clyde was a warship launched in 1866 but there is also a possibility of this being a reference to Field Marshal Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde (1792 – 1863) or this could simply be a reference to the river Clyde which Duncan and the family would see every day. Wellington Napier Gladstone McKay (known as Wellington) was born 5th Jul 1869. Gladstone was prime minister of Britain in this year. The Duke of Wellington (1769 – 1852) would have been a much discussed and revered character around this time and the reference to Napier could be Field Marshall Robert Napier, a British soldier involved with the India Munity and who died in 1890.

22

Robert Napier has a connection to James Outram whose name appears in 1874 with a later son. Orleans North German Chancellor Oliphant McKay (known as Orleans) was born on 15th January 1871. He was the illegitimate child of Duncan McKay and Catherine Oliphant but was brought up with his father and his family. The name of this child is still a mystery to me. To date I have found no connection with the words Orleans North German Chancellor. Admiral Hastings Yelverton James Waters King McKay (known as James) was born on 23rd August 1871. Admiral Sir Hastings R Yelverton was a British Naval Officer who served during the Crimean War and went on to become the First Naval Sea Lord, the title given to the head of the British Navy. James Waters King was the family’s minister who served at the New Kilpatrick Church of Scotland from 1870 – 1898. Havelock Outram Wellington Livingston Bennett Stanley McKay (known as David) was born on 6th May 1874. David Livingston died in 1873 and most of us will know that it was Henry Stanley who asked the famous question “Dr Livingston I presume?” when he found David Livingston in 1871. The trip to find Livingston was financed by Gordon Bennett, a Scotsman who was the Publisher of the New York Herald. General Outram and General Havelock were two of the leaders in the British army during the Indian mutiny (1857 – 1859). The Duke of Wellington (1769 – 1852) was a very well known figure in British history. Margaret Victoria Empress McKay (known as Maggie) was born on 12th May 1876. Queen Victoria was on the throne at this time and one of her titles was Empress of India. Perhaps a slightly more conservative name for this child compared to that of her brothers! We can only surmise what changed in the life of Duncan McKay in 1865. Newspapers would have been an expensive luxury for an iron stone miner, but the family were obviously well aware of the world around them, from America, India, England and Europe as well as Scotland. The elusive names are Orleans North German Chancellor – can anyone shed any light on these? I would appreciate any thoughts, please email me at rootsandbranches@hotmail.co.uk

Your Big Ideas

Over 495 members of the community participated in the ‘I Love Kirknewton’ community consultation, including 200 primary school children, 26 Balerno High School Children, 120 at a drop in event and the rest via in street, doorstep or stakeholder group meetings. Over 60 members of the community provided feedback on the findings and an additional 300 saw the ideas at the recent Meals and Wheels event in the Kirknewton park. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this part of the village development work. Who participated? The largest age range of participants was between 25-44 and their numbers matched the population profile of the area. More females also participated in the consultation than males. What’s it like living in Kirknewton? When asked what’s it like living / working in Kirknewton (1 being not good, 10 being very good) the largest number was 8 (just over 60 participants), then 7 (40 participants), then 9 (just under 30 participants) then 10 (just over 25 participants). The lowest number scored on this question was a 3.

Primary School pupils

On Friday 4th February we spoke to the Primary School pupils at their assembly and then in their classes they chose their likes, dislikes and what they liked to see in Kirknewton. These ideas were fed back to the pupils on the Pupil Council who gave us the school priorities for the village at a meeting on Friday 11th February (see below). 198 pupils participated in total. 24

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Café (with burgers). Ice Cream cones or ice cream can in summer Bus Timetables so don’t cross and make traffic jam Dog bins all over, especially Main Street, Kaimes, Park Joint 4th – Trees/More Activities ie Football Team, BMX Tax, Skate Park Youth Group (meeting place)

The nursery kids in the school would like : 1. Ice Cream Shop 2. Book shop or library 3. Stop dogs going into the swing park 4. Another crossing by the shop 5. A new duck pond 6. A bigger community centre

Balerno High School Pupils

On Wednesday 2nd March we spent 45 minutes talking to Balerno High School pupils who live in Kirknewton. 26 pupils participated. We also captured children under 15 at the Village Hall Kosy Kafe. Their top priorities are listed below: 1. Skate Park – because of transport to other venues, lack of things to do, opportunity to ‘design’ it 2. Improve bus service (with suggestions made), particularly to Balerno 3. Park Improvements (ie skate park, lights on football pitch, rugby posts/ football goals etc.) 4. Flowers in areas 5. Cleaning up areas – graffiti, poor tarmac 6. Older students were interested in the community, being involved in change and interested in helping people.

Please remember to mention The Konect Directory when contacting advertisers

Thanks to Kirknewton Primary School head teacher Mrs Fleming, Balerno High School head teacher Mr Mackenzie and the volunteers at Kosy Kafe who helped this part of the consultation happen.

The Over 16s

We also asked those over 16 what they like, don’t like and would like to see happen. The top findings are below : What do you like about Kirknewton? 1. Location – access to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Livingston, rural, sense of community, friendly and safe was the biggest reason 2. Facilities – shop and Post office 3. Public Transport links 4. Schools 5. Having the Kirknewton Community Development Trust What do you not like about Kirknewton? 1. Lack of facilities – things to do for all ages 2. Public Transport – cost and unreliability 3. School too small 4. Danger of overdevelopment 5. Lack of recycling What changes would you like to see in Kirknewton? 1. More facilities for youth 2. Doctors 3. Improving the community centre 4. Traffic Management 5. Public Transport – improve reliability

What next?

The next stage is to put together a final community development plan for the next five years based on the final community consultation report from Vikki Hilton Associates. Currently the development plan will follow five main themes. They are: Community development and volunteering; Community Facilities and Services; Local environment and green space; Planning and Strategic Development; Local Economy and training Keep checking the new Kirknewton website (kirknewton.org) for more information.

The successful Meals and Wheels event, attended by over 300 people, was tinged with a little sadness as people in Kirknewton found out that Lisa Morton and the Powerdown team, who put the event together, have not got a third year of funding from the Climate Challenge Fund and the project ended at the end of March (unless there is someone kind enough in the village who want to donate a spare £100,000 for the next year!). We wish Lisa and the team well for the future. Without the Powerdown team the Development Trust will have to rely on volunteers and look at other avenues of funding. If you want to join the trust then contact infokirknewton@gmail.com and a membership form will be sent out to you. Membership is free and you will be sent regular news about what the Trust is up to and how you can get actively involved if you wish. A larger membership also helps the village for any right to buy projects that may come out of the current ‘I Love Kirknewton’ community consultation. A number of people have joined the Trust over the last month so join today – and encourage your friends and family in Kirknewton to join too. Remember it is an individual membership, so more than one member of your family can join.

Spicy Village, Balerno Mohammad, who owns and runs the Spicy village in Main Street Balerno, comes from a well-established line of Indian chefs. His father Mr. Gulzar was the first Indian chef in Glasgow, working at two restaurants the Shish Mahal in Gibson Street and the Taj Mahal in Park Road. The Spicy Village curries are the finest Indian curries still made to the same traditional recipes as Mohammad’s father. They are also very different to the usual Edinburgh-style curries which are mainly Bangladeshi. For those of you not sure of the difference I recommend you give them a try and taste the difference. I have eaten at the Spicy Village a few times and each time I have really enjoyed the freshness of the flavour and the complexity of the spices. I recently

26

ordered the South Indian garlic chilli lamb which was tender and as they said.... it was spicy hot! The chicken Jaipuri had an intense fresh flavour and the Special Punjabi Korma is just like the popular creamy kormas but with an added blast of Punjabi spices which gives it a totally unique medium spicy flavour. The tandoori oven cooks nan breads, chicken and lamb tikka, tandoori chicken and shish kebabs are made to order fresh every day. If you haven’t been to try them yet I recommend you go and taste the difference, you won’t be disappointed. Jenny Thomson

An evening walk in Eliburn By Karen Murray

N

ow that the days are longer, finding time for a walk is much easier. Light nights mean you can fit in a walk after the pressures of the working day, keeping body fit and mind relaxed. It never ceases to amaze me how many diverse walks there are without travelling too far from the local area. While waiting for the new park in Kirknewton to be completed, my children were always nagging me for a visit to Eliburn Park. For those of you unaware of the delights of this wonderful place, it is the park of every child’s dream, complete with everything from flying fox to climbing frames, gigantic slides to huge roundabouts. However, on one such visit, I realised that there were also several walking routes in the vicinity of the park with paths criss-crossing the entire area. If you have children you can safely leave to play, then why not head off and explore the pathways while they have fun? Alternatively if you have younger children, you can dangle the carrot of fun in the play park after an invigorating walk! Firstly of course you have to find Eliburn Park. If you are anything like me, the roundabouts in the Livingston area are a complete mystery, however find Houston Road and you will see the car park for Eliburn Park immediately off the road. A new park built around an ancient woodland, the new landscaping incorporates a whole series of spirals built into grass mounds, benches and the like. They give added interest to any walk, however, it is the natural landscape that I find more inspiring when I wander the various pathways. The simplest walk is around the Eliburn Reservoir just below the play park. A haven for anglers, it is best not to disturb them as you walk. It is also a haven for ducks and moorhens and as you walk you can hear all manner of birdsong in the early evening. This will only take around 15 minutes so if you fancy a longer walk, you can walk down the

32

The reserv

oir

west side of the reservoir and keep going rather than cross the dam at the end. This will take you into Livingston Old Wood, rather like entering another time zone. It is hard to believe you are surrounded in new build housing estates and dual carriageways as you walk the zigzagging pathways. You will eventually come to a surfaced path which is actually national cycle route 75 (the same one that runs through Kirknewton). If you turn left you come to a pretty stone bridge that spans Lochshot Burn. This makes for a good resting spot and if you have your mobile handy you can text ELIBURN to 70300 to hear the Woodland Trust’s audio about Eliburn Wood (audio point 4). You can then retrace your footsteps, this time going over the dam and walking up the other side of the reservoir. Another option is to start the walk the same way, this time heading over the dam but instead of continuing around the reservoir, take the steps leading into the woods at the end of the dam. Follow the path through the woods and into open space, basically following the perimeter of the park, crossing over Houston Road, then turning left following the line of the road, before crossing back over and into the park once more. This second circular route is around 1.25 miles in length. These are just a few ways you can enjoy walking in the surrounds of Eliburn Park and wood, but it would be very easy to spend hours wandering the myriad pathways, some prettier than others, which means you can find a different route every time you go. You can of course enjoy this park at any time of day, but why not make the most of British Summer Time and enjoy a relaxing evening walk.

Windows and doors with a guarantee

Karen Murray chats to Colin Hardie of The Window and Door Factory.

W

hen it comes to getting your windows and doors replaced or entirely new ones fitted, the hardest part is deciding which company to go with. One with a long history in the business is often best and fitting that bill is Livingston’s The Window and Door Factory. A family-run business with over 30 years’ experience in the home improvement industry, they have a wealth of knowledge in all areas, whether you are replacing a single window or carrying out a complete conservatory addition to your home. Run by Colin Hardie, the company has a growing reputation for delivering the highest quality of work on all projects, both large and small. Says Colin: “I have been running the company for eight years, but my dad has been in the business for 30 years and I’ve been in it since I left school. Now we run the business together.” Naturally these are trying times for anyone connected with the building trade and while Colin asserts that the trade side of the business is slower than normal, it is being made up for by the domestic side, particularly conservatories. Colin adds that by replacing doors, windows and facia with PVC versions you have something that is maintenance free. Original sash and case windows are incredibly expensive to maintain, but The Window and Door Factory offers a PVC version of a sash and case that gives you the same original look, fitting in with an oldstyle house, but with none of the upkeep. Bi-folding doors are also popular at the moment, both for using a room-dividers or opening up the space of a room by having them as a glass wall that opens onto the garden.

34

The company doesn’t just sell new doors and windows but is also proficient in repairing your current ones. Their experience means they know how to repair just about any problem that may arise and covers aluminium, PVC and timber windows, helping customers make their homes more energy efficient. Colin is also very proud of the fact that the company is DGCOS accredited and says it is what is ensuring peace of mind for customers. DGCOS - The Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) aims to help people make the right choice. It has the backing of the peoples’ consumer champion, Nick Ross, and protects consumers against cowboy operators. The scheme provides comprehensive protection for homeowners installing windows, doors, conservatories and associated products by its members. “We had to be properly vetted to be part of the scheme with references from our customers and suppliers,” explains Colin. Becoming a DGCOS accredited installer isn’t easy and there is an ongoing programme of assessment to ensure companies continue to meet the exacting standards and deliver customer satisfaction. And The Window and Door Factory does provide good customer satisfaction. Says another Konect advertiser, Graeme Harvey of CenScot Therapies in Mid Calder : “They did a fabulous job converting my garage into a therapy suite for my Hypnotherapy Practice. The job took just six working days, the quality of build was excellent and all the trades were very efficient clean and tidy. I would recommend them highly”. Vet’s Tip

Pet Insurance: Don’t be caught without it. Each year, on average, 1 in 3 pets suffer illness or injuries, so unexpected veterinary bills can, unfortunately, occur at any time. We often think of insurance covering treatment of broken bones or wounds following a road traffic accident, but don’t forget animals can develop many long-term conditions such as skin disease, ear problems, heart disease and arthritis (to name just a few), for which an increasing range of treatment options are available. With appropriate insurance cover, you can hopefully ensure that your pet will get the best of care without cost becoming a limiting factor. If your pet is insured your vet should only ask you to pay the policy excess and anything not covered by the insurance and then they will claim the remainder direct from your insurer.

Homemade bread

Recipe from The Hedgerow Bakery and Tearoom

Ingredients 600g Strong White Flour 400g Water 5g Salt 8g Fresh Yeast or 4g Dried Yeast 25g Butter Turn on your oven to the highest it will go approx 220ºC /gas mark 7-9 Method 1. Dissolve the yeast in some of the water in a separate bowl then place the remaining ingredients - flour, salt and butter - into another mixing bowl and combine the ingredients by hand. 2. Pour the yeasty water into the mixing bowl with the flour and add the remaining water. If you are using a stand mixer with a dough hook mix on slow until all the ingredients are combined then increase the speed to medium for 4 minutes. By this time the dough should be quite stretchy, not sticky wet. If you are mixing with your hand hold the bowl with one hand and use the other to mix the ingredients together. As soon as all the dry ingredients have become wet, scrape out onto a work top for kneading. It is important not to add any more flour at this stage even if the dough seems too wet or sticky - as you knead the flour it will absorb the water and the mix will slowly become more elastic. Depending on your muscle or stamina it will take approx 10 – 15 minutes. 3. Place the bread dough into the mixing bowl and cover with a supermarket carrier bag and leave at room temperature. After 1.5 or 2 hours your dough will have risen, but if the dough still does not look as if it has doubled in size just leave it a little longer. 4. Grease a large baking tray, set aside, then tip the dough back onto the work top - you may need to flour the surface slightly at this point. With the heal of 40

your hand flatten it until it is the size of a dinner plate and now taking one of the edges of the circle take it over to ¾ the opposite edge of the circle. Press it down and continue around the loaf repeating the operation. The idea is to stretch the dough so that when you turn it over it should form a reasonable round ball. 5. Gently lift your bread onto your baking tray cover with cloth or bag again and leave for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes your bread should be ready to go into the oven. 6. Remove the cover from your bread. It is possible to wet the top of the bread and put seeds or flour or score it with a sharp knife - be careful not to cut too deep. As quickly as possible, get the dough into the oven. This should take 3040 minutes. After 25 minutes turn down the oven to 200ºC or gas 7. Your loaf with be ready with a golden brown top. Lift it out with a tea towel and it should sound hollow; if not place back in the oven and cook for another 10 min. Leave it to cool for 30 minutes. It is important to wait to ensure it is easy to cut. Once you have made your own bread you will find it difficult to buy packet bread! Recipe and method provided by The Hedgerow Bakery and Tearoom, Almondell Garden Centre, East Calder, 01506 885572. Delicious freshly baked bread straight from the oven to take away. Homemade lunches and cakes to enjoy in the tearoom. See their advertisement on page 17.
