The Story Behind Livingston’s Sculptures By Yvonne MacMillan
1)
E
ver wondered what that pointy sculpture is on the Lizzie Brice roundabout that we drive past all the time? It’s one of many sculptures dotted around Livingston, and if you’ve ever wondered if there is a history or meaning behind them, the answer is “yes.” Uphall Station resident Yvonne MacMillan recently interviewed the artist behind the four stone sculptures located on roundabouts on the main approach roads to Livingston, to learn the story behind them. The design and creation of a large sculpture on a roundabout at each of the four main approach roads to Livingston was called the “Landmark Project.” Commissioned in 1995 by the Livingston Development Corporation (LDC), the purpose was to create distinctive, modern landmarks as Livingston lacked traditional landmarks. David F. Wilson, an awardwinning Perth-based Public Artist, was selected because his imaginative use of stonework in other projects had impressed the LDC. Wilson explains that his brief was pretty open but that the works should reflect the old industries of the area, mining for example, as well as allude to the more modern technologies and industries that the area was now famous for. Location, location, location As the sculptures were to be on roundabouts, Wilson wanted each design to be of a simple enough form that it was easily ‘readable’ from a distance and at speed, but also to stand up to closer scrutiny. His intention was that the designs change shape as you move round them, to be of interest at every point. Inspiration Wilson called the four completed stonework and copper sculptures Compass, NORgate, Chrysalis and Dyke Swarm. His inspiration stemmed from his interest in organic forms and the powerful symbolism of growth. “The idea of renewal seemed very apt to the project. Even the NORgate (or archway) at

Deer Park roundabout condenses into a bud form from certain views. This was deliberate as I felt that changing the form as you moved around it would create a dynamic that would bring interest to the project.” This feeling of renewal informs the other sculptures too, Wilson explains. The Compass sculpture on the Lizzie Brice roundabout with its angled, needlesharp copper point signifies new life and the energy of the town thrusting upwards. The zig-zagging walls and curving stone dyke of the Dyke Swarm, which hugs the Newpark roundabout on the west approach road, reflects the natural materials of the town, for instance, the bings, and this is mixed with contemporary copper for the town’s new direction. The North Eliburn roundabout sculpture, Chrysalis, illustrates the development from one form into something else, growing and new life emerging. Construction Wilson had to work to a very tight deadline; there were only four months available for building on site and all four sites had to be worked together. Employing a team of stone masons, drystane dykers and labourers, he feels he must have covered hundreds of miles moving around all the sites keeping everything on track. The project was completed just two weeks late, over the winter of 1995-96. Wilson used a limited pallet of materials for the build, keeping them as a constant to tie the whole scheme together. This consisted of various

types of natural stone - reclaimed dyking stone, whinstone, a yellow limestone, building rubble and copper. Farmers at this time were opening up their fields and there was a surplus of stone from their old dykes. He arranged the purchase of the dyking stone through a stone merchant as that was the only way he could guarantee the supply in the quantities that he required. The yellow limestone was sourced from a quarry in England and was used for aesthetics as it gave a good contrast to the whinstone. This can be seen to good effect in the NORgate and Compass artworks. Asked if it had been a smooth-running project, Wilson says, “Considering the scale of the project, some of the technicalities that it threw up and the short timescale allowed, I feel it went incredibly well. But I certainly had my bad days!” He is referring to the installing of the foundations for the soaring, 13 metre high archway, NORgate, on Deer Park roundabout - one of the biggest tasks of the whole project. Wilson had 6 concrete lorries ordered at half hour intervals, a specialist concrete-pumping lorry on hire, and a whole traffic management system in place so that the materials could be got onto the roundabout safely and efficiently. This had taken an enormous amount of preparation and organising and was a pretty stressful undertaking. It all started to go pear-shaped within the first half hour. The concrete would not pump and nobody could get it working. There were 3 concrete lorries parked around the roundabout with only a set time to offload or the costs start to spiral. The stress and tempers were rising with one driver marching onto site and berating them all for being ‘incompetents’. It turned out that the concrete supplier had supplied the wrong grade of material for pumping so Wilson packed everybody up before lunchtime that day and went home early! It was all re-arranged for the following day and went without a hitch. Of the four artworks, NORgate on Deer Park roundabout is closest to Wilson’s heart. From the concept sketch through to how to build it, this was his vision. There were many technical challenges involved and he is very proud that he was able to solve them all. One structural engineer told him it couldn’t be built! “NORgate is very visible from the M8 and if the flight path is right you can see it from an aeroplane, as well as being visible in Google earth,” he says.
4)
Fifteen years on, Wilson can still recall the intensity of the project and feeling drained and deflated when he swept up and walked away at the end. “But the whole project,” Wilson remembers,”was such a thrill!”

Plan your building project with David Hastings By Karen Murray
I
f you’re embarking on a building project, and in particular an extension to your house or an attic or garage conversion, forward planning is a must. All too often people jump into such projects without putting all the paperwork in place first and the costs tend to end up spiraling out of control. Enter local Building Surveyor David Hastings with all the expertise you need. David has over 40 years experience in all areas of building work. From his younger years helping out his grandfather and uncle who were builders in London, the bug to build was well established. After graduating from a building course at Heriot Watt David worked at the National Building Agency - a multi disciplinary quango encompassing architects, engineers, surveyors and economists. He was involved in the research and development of building projects, eventually becoming senior technical officer. When the agency was wound up in 1981, David and two colleagues established their own multi professional firm Williams, McDonald and Hastings. With ultimately four partners and 40 staff, it was and still is a successful business although sadly David is the only partner left. David still works on housing association and commercial projects but now has more time to spend on the jobs he began his career working on - namely local domestic and office alterations and extensions, bestowing the benefit of his considerable knowledge and experience on his clients. He also manages to fit in a fair amount of golf! Very involved in the local community, more recently as an energy adviser to the Kirknewton area, David takes pains to ensure that anyone considering building work knows exactly what they are taking on. “I ensure my clients are involved in all aspects but I am sensitive to developing their ideas in a way that works. I explain the various constraints and all the building and planning regulations,” says David, going on to explain how he will establish a budget and explain how far it will go.
“It is easy to let the finances get out of control when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms,” he smiles, explaining how it is the fitments that bump up the price. Once the specifications have been agreed, David will prepare sketch designs that comply with planning and building permissions before work can begin. “Building regulations change every few years so you need to ensure your plans conform,” states David. “Sometimes the layout you want can’t be achieved and it’s best to know this ahead of building.” David offers a free initial survey and consultation up to sketch design stage so that you are on the right track before any outlay. If you’re happy, he then moves to the planning permission stage and obtains this for you before submitting your plans to building control to obtain the Warrant. David suggests you get your building warrant before approaching any contractors and you have finalised drawings. Contractors can then tender for the work. David also offers a further service - supervision of the project which often turns out to be a much longer and more time consuming task than first perceived. If you have ever seen an episode of Grand Designs you may well be aware of this, so if you are planning your own ‘grand design’ or even a not so grand one, contacting David at the beginning will get your project on the right track and keep it there.

Unusual Occupations
Family history column by Maureen McIntyre
W
hen researching your family tree it is important to record the occupations of your ancestors. This helps you to verify your research as most workers kept the same trade for most of their lives. Labourers, farm hands, ploughmen, blacksmith are all still trades and professions that are around today but there are many which have long since died out and even some which will confuse you. It is easy to work out that fleshers were butchers, a hawker sold goods but there are many unusual occupations that need investigated. During my research I was intrigued by the occupation of a Miss Georgina Robertson in the 1901 census which was listed as a ‘Jet Manufacturer’. Her family’s business was a dairy could a jet manufacturer be something to do with the jets used to sterilise dairy equipment? There are many web sites offering suggestions of the more unusual occupations but none listed ‘Jet Manufacturer’, further investigation was needed. I discovered that Georgina had died in 1931 and her occupation was listed then as an antique dealer, no mention of anything connected to the dairy business. An excellent source of information that I regularly use are the Post Office directories. The directories are advertisements for businesses, and the 1914-1915 Edinburgh and Leith Post Office Directory lists Georgina Robertson at 132 George Street as Jeweller and Gold Silversmith. Jet is natural 18
material which comes from decaying wood compressed over many years so Georgina could not be manufacturing jet but I think it is safe to assume that she was involved in either the making or selling of jet jewellery. Post Office Directories can be viewed online at the National Library of Scotland. Genealogy is fast becoming one of the most popular hobbies in the country with people becoming addicted to finding out all they can about their ancestors. If you are just starting your tree or if you are having problems with any of your branches, please email me at rootsandbranches@hotmail.co.uk and I will endeavour to help.

Thought for the Month By Jackie Whigham
You are Energy
E
verything in our world is made up of energy - including us. Unbeknown to us we are constantly vibrating at a certain frequency. The level of your frequency or wave length depends upon the quality of your thoughts, love being the highest frequency and hate being the lowest. We’re intuitively able to read energy through our feelings. An example of this is when you meet someone for the first time and say ‘they’re on the same wave length as me’ meaning you are of the same vibration. Your vibration is important because the law of attraction states ‘You get back in life what you give out’. This is a universal law and is operating in your life every second of the day - no exception. If you have thoughts of love, kindness, patience, tolerance....then you will find the
20
universe will bring these qualities back into your life in abundance. The opposite is also true. You are always drawing back to you that which you are. So, if you ever want to know what your vibration is, take a look at who and what you’re surrounded by. If life feels good, your emotional system is letting you know you’re on the right path. If you’re not feeling comfortable with your life, change your thoughts to create feelings that make you feel good. The quickest way to lift your vibration is to cultivate gratitude for all that you are and all that you have. Have a great day!

Potter with Paints - Kirsty McDiarmid By Karen Murray
P
ainting - pictures that is, not walls - does not come easy to many, although I do maintain there is an artist somewhere in us all. Art is of course very subjective and everyone enjoys something different. We often buy art as an investment but you really should only buy art that you enjoy looking at and want to hang on your walls, investment or not. It should be for pleasure and enjoyment and if you are lucky, you may just hit on an artist who becomes sought after over time. Everyone has a medium they prefer too - be that watercolour, acrylics, oils or a mix. Kirsty McDiarmid is an oil painter and can turn her hand equally to portraits, landscapes or still life. Because of that versatility her work appeals to a wide audience. Kirsty has been painting seriously for several years and paints in oils because she loves the richness and flexibility of the medium. Originally from Scotland, Kirsty moved to Ireland in 2003 and as someone who was always looking for a creative outlet, she was inspired by the countryside around her and had more time to devote to her art. She became involved with The South Tipperary Art Centre, firstly taking courses with artist Conor Deere who taught her how to develop her painting techniques. Tutored by Conor for a few years, Kirsty then joined him and other artists in many successful exhibitions. She assisted in the courses for beginners at the art centre and enjoyed sharing what she had learned with them. Family commitments brought her back to Scotland in 2009 and now happily living in Bathgate, she is continuing with her oil painting, enjoying regular commissions and exhibiting in galleries,

most recently and very successfully at Edinburgh Airport, where she will be again exhibiting at the end of the year. She is now a member of the Livingston Art Association and was delighted to receive an award for one of her paintings at the 40th annual exhibition at Howden Park Centre 2010. “Oil paints are my favourite medium and I strive to achieve depth and realism in my work,” states Kirsty who is really enjoying the commissions she has been receiving more recently. “Painting is a therapeutic, relaxing and incredibly rewarding experience and I have personally found it a particularly good way to unwind and cope with stress,” she adds. Oil painting - the history As most of you are probably aware, the technique of oil painting is a long established one, superseding the use of tempera painting in the early 15th century. Oils were used as a varnish over tempera paintings but they began to be mixed with the pigments themselves. In early modern Europe linseed oil was most commonly used. In fact, traditionalist that my artist father is, I remember when I was small the smell of linseed in the house as he tried to emulate the same texture of paint as was used by the masters! By the height of the Renaissance oil painting techniques had almost

completely replaced tempera paints in most of Europe. These days most artists use water soluble oil paint which contains an emulsiďŹ er, allowing the artist to use water to thin the paint rather than paint thinner, and also means the paint dries much faster but leaving the same rich texture. You can do it too! As I have said, there is a budding artist in all of us, and Kirsty loves to share her knowledge. You can see her work at Potter Around and she has agreed to run an oil painting course at Potter Around so that others can also learn the technique and produce a piece of

artwork that they can be proud of. It may not be the Mona Lisa but you will be impressed with what you can do. See Kirsty’s work at www.kirstymcdiarmid.com or pop into Potter Around at Overton Farm. Get in Gear with Rod Cameron DSA ADI

Local Walk: A View from the Crag By Yvonne MacMillan
Straight there and back: 7km/4.5 miles Circular route: 8.5km/5.3 miles
I
t’s the first official day of autumn and we feel like stretching our legs so an invigorating walk to Binny Craig appeals. Binny Craig is a geologically important landmark in West Lothian and, although a modest 220 metres (721ft) high, the views from the top are anything but. Binny Craig has two faces, a rock face enjoyed by climbers and a gentler, grassy face appreciated by walkers. It is a great example of a crag-and-tail feature, the legacy of glacier movement during the Ice Age. An autumnal freshness is in the air as we set out, leaving the car at Uphall Station railway car park, and turning right to follow the road downhill to Uphall, before crossing the road near the mini roundabout by the entrance to Houston House and heading up Forkneuk Road. We turn left, follow the road round to the right, go left, then right again through houses and a farm track stretches ahead. Here there’s a signpost for Binny Craig and, right on cue, the crag is dead ahead.
With the traffic noise thankfully behind us, it feels as if we’ve stepped Narnialike into another world of wide open spaces and rolling, fertile farmland. The silence is golden, as are the fields of wheat and barley and once our ears attune to the silence we hear the ripe grain in the field beside us crackling and popping the way the breakfast cereal does! The route towards the crag is straightforward and well-signposted. We leave the farm track and a path leads to
30
a well-constructed bridge over a stream where a considerately placed bench is situated. Our goal is still in sight as we follow the public footpath bordering a field. Binny Craig’s trig point is visible too. The ground is rising now as we walk up a grassy track by the side of a building onto a tarmac road, walk uphill for a few paces till another signpost directs us, via a couple of sturdy gates, onto a path between fields, new livestock-proof fencing on either side. A bit of an effort is needed as we climb up rough stone steps (approx. 60) between mixed woodland and a gorse-filled hillside. Then two more sturdy gates to negotiate and a last effort up the grassy slope to the top of Binny Craig. The panoramic views are wonderful and well worth our exertions. We catch our breath and sit for half an hour enjoying the features in the landscape. The Ochil hills across the River Forth’s floodplain, the magnificent 1.5 mile long Forth Rail Bridge, Edinburgh and, on a clear day like today, the hazy shapes of Berwick Law and the Bass Rock. Closer to home, the Pentlands frame the Almond Valley spread below. A great place for children to see where they live in 3D! You can return the way you came or if you prefer a longer, circular walk, return by way of Ecclesmachan. Once back on the tarmac road, turn left and follow this road to the village, turn right at the junction which will take you back to Uphall.

Vet’s Tip: Rabbit Care – Neutering and vaccinating
A
neutered rabbit is a happy and healthy rabbit! Neutering of our fluffy friends is often not thought about as much as getting our dogs and cats castrated or spayed. But neutering has many benefits. Rabbits love to live in pairs, or groups. Castrated males are much less aggressive and territorial. They are less likely to mark their territory by urine spraying, and they are less like to dig, chew, and generally be destructive. It is also impossible for them to go on to father babies! Neutered females are also much friendlier but it also has health benefits. It prevents uterine cancers and they are much less likely to get mammary cancers too. Around 80% of un-spayed females will go on to develop uterine tumours after the age of 5 years. Males can be
castrated from around 4 months, females can be spayed from 5 months. Another important aspect of keeping rabbits is having them vaccinated. There are two vaccines available – Myxomatosis, and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). Myxomatosis is a virus that causes a nasty upper respiratory infection. Sticky eye discharge, snotty noses and facial swellings are signs that often progress to a horrible slow, often fatal, disease. It is spread by fleas, other biting insects and of course contact with infected rabbits. VHD is a disease that is almost 100% fatal. Infected rabbits develop high temperatures, refuse to eat, internal bleeding and often fit. In both diseases, prevention is much better than cure. Kirknewton food waste trial The Kirknewton Village Food Waste Trial was initiated to establish the amount of food waste the village would create on an annual basis and to help divert food waste from Kirknewton away from landfill. The ‘opt-in’ project was funded by Kirknewton Community Development Trust (KCDT), working with CORE (Cyrenians Organics Recycling Enterprise). KCDT asked for volunteer bin champions to take responsibility for a main bin and to help promote the scheme to their local neighbours. 15 volunteers came forward and approximately 240 homes are taking part in the scheme. The tonnage of food waste collected over six months has been approximately 8 tonnes. We anticipate a yearly collection will be 16 tonnes. The whole village participating would be approx. 40 tonnes. (roughly 650 homes). The trial ends at the end of September but we have approached West Lothian Council to see if they could fund the project for another year. How successful has the scheme been? We thought we’d let the villagers of Kirknewton, who took part in the scheme, make their own comments. Comment 1 Bin makes you aware of how much waste you make--even when you are careful. Comment 2 I do realise how much food waste we produce and that is depressing but I feel that at least it is going somewhere useful and I don’t feel such a need to finish the food on the kids’ plates! We do however need more people on board in order to make environmental sense for the Core lorry that drives up and down all the farm lanes etc. Comment 3 We’ve found that we are more aware of how much food we buy so that we don’t end up throwing a lot away. Comment 4 It helps reduce main waste, but also
34
highlights what is being binned, helping to budget and plan shopping better. Comment 5 I’m amazed how little we put in our grey bin now between recycling and the food waste. Comment 6 In particular I liked the wider range of things I could put into the bin, which I was not adding to my compost - eg chicken bones. (That is until my dog got stuck into the bin and spent several days recovering from eating chicken bones!!) Comment 7 It is not difficult apart from having to walk a minute up the road which is ok in summer but a little off putting when the weather gets cold and wet! Comment 8 I am amazed at how quickly I have become conditioned to filling up my Green Holder in the Kitchen. Comment 9 We have been very pleased with the food waste trial. It coincided with us starting to wean our baby and it was good that the extra food waste we had (as there were always lots of leftover little bits) weren’t going to landfill. When we have been away we have found that it feels wrong just to put our food waste in the normal bin! Comment 10 8 households contribute waste to ‘my’ bin. We’ve all noticed a reduction in the amount we send to land fill. I like that the collection is weekly and have not found smell to be an issue. I have only heard positive comments from those using my bin although that has now turned to disappointment that the scheme is ending. I hope you are able to get funding to continue this scheme. Everything’s fresh and new at the Bridge Inn, Ratho.
W
hether you’ve visited recently or whether it’s been a while since you called in, you’ll find there have been a lot of changes at the Bridge Inn, with something fresh and interesting each time you come back. The major renovations are complete. The scaffolding is a distant memory and the newly painted exterior is a big improvement. The new Bistro has lots more space, more tables overlooking the canal and a much lighter and fresher room. For a midweek lunch, evening meal or special weekend occasion, we’re sure you’ll love the new look. The new Bar is ideal for an informal drink or bar meal, seven days a week. It will soon be time to light the real log fire, so come and join us for a drink or informal evening. Look out for our relaunched pub quiz and calendar of live music throughout the autumn. The new Terrace offers a great spot to enjoy any dry weather and look down on the Union Canal. Bring a coat for the cooler days and come and sample one of the best waterside locations in the Lothians. Our four new boutique bedrooms have been really busy over the summer. If you, or someone you know likes beautiful rooms with pure Egyptian cotton bedlinen, a choice of roll-top bath or “rain” showers, Au Lait toiletries and a choice of kingsize, twin or even a fourposter bed, then please come and stay. With a freshly-made breakfast featuring only the freshest Scottish produce, we know it will be a special night away, for business or pleasure. Lots of photos and customer feedback are on our website.
We now have both the Pride of Belhaven and Pride of the Union up and running for both lunch and dinner cruises, as well as private charters for any party occasions. We have Christmas party nights on the boats and in the restaurant, and dates available for your own charters. Look online or call us for details. We are delighted to welcome Ben Watson as our new Executive chef. He has recently been overseeing all of the Howie’s restaurants in Edinburgh and beyond, but trained here at the Bridge Inn in his teenage years under his father, the award winning chef Ian Watson. With him we are creating new menus for lunch, dinner and a delicious bar snack menu. We are producing more of our own veg in the gardens at Ratho, and pork from our own herd of saddleback pigs features on the menus. So we hope we have tempted you enough to come along and try the new look Bridge Inn at Ratho. We are confident there is something for everyone. And with fresh, local food, an extensive range of wines and cask ales, and a warm welcome...we look forward to greeting you at the Bridge Inn shortly. Recipe and October Food Notes By Anne Pinkerton
O
ctober is a time for apple harvest. Apple trees can be planted now while the soil is still warm. There are hundreds of different varieties and many specially bred for the Scottish climate. This spring we planted 8 different trees which in a few years, we hope, will give us both eaters and cookers, in succession, over the winter. There are 3 apples on these trees already, not much of a harvest but a start. If you have a small garden you can plant a Family Tree which will have several varieties grafted onto one root. Some are even on roots that will keep the tree small enough to be grown in a largish pot. At the Botanic Garden of Wales they have trained apples on very dwarf root stocks as edging to the flower beds. The “trees” are only about ½ meter high and look neat but are more use than a box hedge. The variety is Howgate Wonder, a tree raised the other side of the Pentlands so this is an idea you could copy here. Autumn - the nights are drawing in and we begin thinking of food to sustain us and to keep out the cold. This is a good time to turn to traditional work-aday dishes. Many are easy to make, use local ingredients and are not expensive. So with apples in mind here are some recipes. Apple Amber 500 gm cooking apples peeled and cored, or a mixture of cookers and sharp-tasting eaters 1 tablespoon honey or sugar for sweetening the apple 2eggs; separated, yellow beaten, white kept for the topping 110 gm white sugar Sliced bread Butter 44
A hand-full of dried fruit if liked. Or a couple of strips of lemon peel. Do this by using your potato peeler. The rest of the lemon can be used later. Method Butter the bread and line an oven proof dish with the butter side to the outside. Cook the apples gently till they fall (go mushy). Take off the heat, add the honey (or tablespoon of sugar) and fruit or lemon peelings, if used, and the beaten egg yellows. Mix well together and pour into the bread lined baking dish. Bake in 160oC oven for 20 mins. Make a meringue top by whisking the egg whites till stiff, but not dry, and then add, little by little the sugar. Whisk hard between additions. Turn the oven down to 80oC. Spread the meringue over the apple and cook in the cool oven for 20 mins more. Timing is not too crucial. The end result should be a crisp outer bread case, creamy filling and a crunchy meringue top. This is delicious at any temperature and needs nothing more; but you could have some clotted cream if you felt selfindulgent.

Potato and Apple Bake - Serves 4 500gm potatoes, sliced thin; peeled if you want 500gm cooking apples peeled, cored and sliced 300gm bacon bits. Smoked or not as you prefer. Many supermarkets sell off-cuts or mis-shapes. These are perfect for this dish and not expensive. Butter or oil for greasing the dish Salt and pepper. Method Put the sliced potatoes in boiling water and bring them back to the boil. This cuts the baking time. Drain them. Starting with potatoes. layer the ingredients in an oven-proof dish, seasoning as you go. End with a layer of potatoes. Push the layers down well. Dot the top with a little butter or drizzle oil over the surface. Bake at 180oC for about 35 minutes or till bubbling and crisp on top.
Curried Apple and Parsnip Soup Serves 4 1 onion; chopped 2 large cooking apples; peeled and rough chopped 2 large parsnips; peeled and rough chopped Teaspoon curry paste or powder 1 pint veg or chicken stock; stock from a stock cube is fine. A little oil or butter for frying
Method Warm the oil/butter, add the onion fry till golden. Add the apples and parsnips and cook for 2or 3 minutes. Add the curry powder or paste; stir everything over the heat to mix. Then add the stock, it will fizz a bit at first, cook on a low heat with a lid on the pan, for 10/15 minutes, by which time the fruit and veg should all be soft. If you have a blender wand blitz the soup in the pan. If not, either sieve the soup in a mouli or blend in a liquidizer till you have a smooth pale yellow soup. Taste and add salt and pepper to your taste. Some stock cubes are quite salty so do not add extra till the end. Re-heat and serve with a blob of plain yogurt and/or some fine cut coriander leaves. With some crusty bread you have lunch for 4.

Inside & Out By Tony Foster
I
f you like putting your feet up at home or love to go out, each month Tony Foster will take you through the highlights of what to do and where to go across the Lothians.
INSIDE Halloween is coming Expect the unexpected on 31st October, traditionally known as Halloween. Kids will come “Trick or Treating” to your door but it is also known as ‘guising’. Children disguised in costumes are recorded in Scotland as early as 1895 carrying turnip torches and being rewarded with cakes, fruit and money. To celebrate this event ‘Inside & Out’ has a spooky theme this month, beginning with the master author of horror books Stephen King. His new book, 11.22.63, is out in hardback on 8th November. This horrific time travelling corker features Jake Epping who travels back in time to 1958, giving up his mobile and iPod for the world of Elvis and JFK. During this time he meets loner Lee Harvey Oswald and begins a series of events and time itself could be changed. James Morrison and Alice Cooper The Awakening. Is it a new film about the sighting of a child ghost starring Dominic West? The sequel to sci fi horror ‘Species’ or even a 1980 British Horror Film that they ‘thought had been buried forever’? This Halloween ‘The Awakening’ is the name of James Morrison’s third album, and is released at the end of September. Another musical morsel very much in keeping with Halloween has to be Alice Coopers ‘Welcome 2 My Nightmare’. Out early September the new album has songs entitled ‘The Nightmare Returns’, ‘Ghouls Gone Wild’ and ‘Under the Bed’ that are bound to become Halloween soundtrack classics! It’s superhero month With the number of superheroes on our big screen this summer expect many kids 52
to be out in their Batman, Superman and Spiderman costumes this Halloween. They can also enjoy Thor, Green Lantern and X Men-First Class this month on DVD and Blu Ray. DC Comics in the US are relaunching all 52 of their superhero comic books. Scottish writer Grant Morrison, who has just released his autobiography ‘Supergods’ is writing the new Superman in Action Comics before tackling Wonder Woman next year. If horror is your thing then pick up Justice League Dark, written by Brit Pete Milligan, that features characters including Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Zatanna and Hellblazer himself John Constantine. You can pick up the titles at specialist comic shops or online. Dead Island We knew the gaming industry wouldn’t let our Halloween theme down. Dead Island is available on all formats, for over 18’s only, on 9th September. The game promises a holiday paradise gone mad after a zombie outbreak. Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ this isn’t! If only because at the end of a game some of the players look like zombies I thought it was worth mentioning the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. It may mean an early morning in front of the telly but the final is on Sunday 23rd October at 9am. By the time you read this you may still get to see England and Scotland play each other on 1st October at 8.30am.
OUTSIDE Things that go bump in the night Having a baby or looking for guidance on your new baby or toddler? The Bump and Baby Fair takes place at the Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel on 6th November with a whole host of exhibitors who will give you help and guidance along the way. There is also a Jack and Jill Market at West Lothian College on 23rd October at 10.30am where you can buy and sell nearly new clothes for kids aged 0 to 9.

Aimed at 5 to 9 year olds come in costume to win a prize and enjoy the creepy craft session! Please book your places by telephoning 0131 331 2451 or email enquiries@hopetoun.co.uk You can also get the pants scared off you on the Ghost Tour of Old Torphichen. The event is £5 on 29th October at 6pm – e mail torphichengaladay@googlemail.com for more info. The shoulder bone is connected to the elbow bone Balerno Bowling Club are the hosts of Elbow Jane on Tuesday 25th October at 8pm. Acoustic contemporary folk pop Elbow Jane are from the Wirral on Merseyside and bring to Balerno an exceptional blend of bouzouki, mandolin, guitars, piano, percussion, expressive vocals and stunning harmonies. Their new album is also called Boldest Blood – a great Halloween title if ever we heard one! Halloween Apple Day at Kirknewton The Kirknewton Allotment Association Apple Day event takes place in the Village Hall on Sunday 30th October from 12 noon to 4pm. Enjoy home baking, bring your Halloween lanterns, face painting, bobbing for apples and an opportunity to find out where they buried the bodies! For more tasty food and crafts you can also try out the community led farmers market at Juniper Green, near the Kinleith Arms, on Saturday 22 October from 9am to 1pm.
You can also follow Inside and Out online at the blog ‘www.insid eandoot.wordpress.c om’ this features the ‘di rector’s cut’ of this art icle, online links and video s. If you have an eve nt you would like us to mention online or in future issues of Konect the n e mail insideandoot@gmail. com.
would prefer ‘The Help’, based on Kathryn Stockett’s novel about an aspiring author during the 1960’s civil rights movement. Or maybe the remake of ‘Footloose’, the original film that made Kevin Bacon a star and gave Kenny Loggins his biggest ever hit, may grab your attention. Also worth a look is the rebooted ‘The Three Musketeers’ and ‘The Adventures of TinTin’, in which director Stephen Spielberg joins Herge’s young adventurer on a virtual animation treasure hunt with Captain Haddock and Snowy the Dog. Fright Night Ghost Walk The Linlithgow Arts Festival runs from 1st – 30th October. Now in it’s 6th year you can enjoy opera, classical guitar, jazz, folk, dance, theatre and wine tasting! On Friday 14th and 21st and Saturday 15th and 22nd October at 7.30 & 9.15pm you can join the Fright Night Ghost Walk. You can meet the United Ghosts of Linlithgow Yore ( UGLY) who challenge you to a nocturnal sojourn through the haunted remains of Linlithgow Palace. Tickets are available from www.historic-scotland.gov. uk/shop. For more info on all the events at the Linlithgow Arts Festival go to www.celebrate-linlithgow.org.uk.
All for one…and footloose for all! After a number of years when the horror film made a comeback at the cinema it is quite a disappointment that around Halloween the biggest general release is called ‘Demons Never Die’. So perhaps you
Halloween Free Pottery At least one room in Potter Around in Kirknewton will be Halloween free for those who don’t like Halloween. On 29-30 October bring along your t-shirts, shirts and blouses, to paint blood and spiders webs on them. They will also have masks to decorate and witches hats to make. Music to your ears
Angie Davies - Founder and Managing Director Monkey Music

hen a new baby arrives your world is never the same again. Suddenly there’s another voice to be reckoned with. I’m not talking about the screaming one that keeps you awake at night, but the niggling voice that buzzes around inside your head repeatedly asking, ‘what is best for my baby?’ Finding the answers can be a daunting process. There’s a plethora of conflicting advice and opinion on how to rear happy children and picking your way through it can cause more sleepless nights than colic, teething and soggy nappies combined! My own answer was music. As a trained classical musician and having taught music to very young children, I was aware, long before becoming a mum, of the importance of introducing babies to music as soon as possible. All children are born with an innate musicality and only if this is encouraged early enough will a child fulfil their natural musical potential. But the benefits of music for very young children, particularly when taught within a group, go much deeper than this. Early exposure to singing, listening to and playing music can sharpen up a whole range of educational skills. That’s why I set up Monkey Music. Thirteen years ago, I wanted to create a class for my baby daughter which would introduce her to the power of music in a lively, imaginative and social environment. The spin-off benefits for that first group of little monkeys were immediately obvious. Language and numerical skills flourished through action songs and rhymes; fine motor skills were refined through playing hand held percussion instruments, while an awareness of space and one another was developed through movement. The children’s confidence and self-esteem grew rapidly as their To advertise call 07824 469266 or 07854 492638
involvement in the classes increased. Today, Monkey Music classes are a weekly ritual for thousands of young children and families across the country. For many parents music has gone a long way to answering the eternal question, ‘what is best for my baby?’. For others, the classes are simply a time to enjoy being part of a local community and meeting new parents. As for the children? They’re having such a good time at Monkey Music that they barely seem to notice how clever they are! Monkey Music runs classes throughout Edinburgh including Saturday morning classes in Juniper Green.
