Technology has not only subverted the art of portrait photography and its transmission; it has altered people’s way of seeing and the habitual manner of body movement. As we take up the focus of other people’s camera lenses, we are also searching for the target of our next portrait. Each of us has become a spectacle in the eyes of the other. Choreographer Joseph Lee explores the above phenomena in Unfolding Images: We Are Spectacle(s). Echoing his acclaimed solo contemporary dance piece Folding Echoes, this time, rather than embarking on a one-man journey, Lee teams up with five performers to explore and examine the various body gestures as a form of experiment. Drawing references from the concept of portrait photography as a starting point, Lee and his performers probe into the delicate relations between a performer and a spectator, and the peculiar desire to see and be seen.

While the creative process began at a time when live performances were the norm, the team was faced with the initial challenge of interpreting the body and the performance mediated by various visual presentations online and on social media. We were then confronted by the waves of uncertainties and changes, which further altered our perceived mode of presentation in front of a live audience in the venue. The circumstances prompted our reflection on how two-dimensional images shape our lives, the choices we make and the inevitable situations we have to tackle. After all, various theatre artists have contemplated, transposed or adapted their works to the two-dimensional visual framework. The impact and repercussions would be evident, if not more pronounced, in life and other aspects as well. Hence, in the upcoming performance, we set out to explore how people deal with the images of the self and others through moments of gaze and quietude in remote dialogue. As in-venue events are slowly resuming, I wonder how much it has changed in your perception of a live performance in the theatre, but I am grateful for your presence nonetheless. The performance examines the phenomenon of the physical versus the virtual, the abstract and the concrete, as well as the overlap between images, language and dance. It is open to interpretation and there is no single answer on its meaning. At a time in which freedom and choices are becoming increasingly restricted, we can at least preserve our narrative domain and the potential it holds. Joseph Lee
