New inspirations create new architectures, just as many technologies did in the past. There are emerging technologies which has not yet flourished its value in the design field across the scales, artworks, architectures, and urban design. I have been exploring the design with the opportunities of those technologies, such as environmental simulations, digital fabrications, and so on. At the same time, the careful investigation to accommodate the values in the past and the future has been remaining in my core. These are the past works of Hiroki Kawashima, who can go across the dierent scales, from science to art&design, and from objective to expressive, toward the innovations.

URBAN STITCH

Miami is sinking. Natural disasters, compounded with market saturation and financial insecurity for many create a very inequitable landscape that is contradictory to logic at times. Past interventions on the city, like the Interstate Highway System, left visible scars on the city and often in already impoverished areas. The tourism and real-estate speculation has created neglected parts of the city ignored by these industries. The neighborhood of Overtown is a result of this neglect and within eyesight of the over-speculation in Downtown Miami. It was originally for segregation of African Americans and it has remained an isolated neighborhood. Surrounding this land is numerous areas of intense real-estate speculation, despite being in flood zones. It is one of the few areas of the city at an elevation above the projected sea level rise within the next 200 years. As Overtown becomes more valuable for its dry land well connected to the rest of the city, this neighborhood and others like it, risk further displacement of their already vulnerable residents. This project proposes a smarter way for Miami’s continued urbanization, with the added complexity of climate change. By joining the impoverished community of Overtown with constant appetite for real-estate investment in the city, a better method for future inner-city growth can be established.

PHASE IV - HIGH-DENSITY MARKET-BASED DEVELOPMENT This project, including three pieces reorganizing the urban fabric

This new method is based around Transit Oriented Development (T.O.D.) that builds a community of diverse programs and people around it. It also allows for impact investment in Overtown, a neighborhood still avoided by traditional investors. The transit stop at the center of the development also encourages public transit usage in an automotive focused city by creating a new urban center. The incentives for things like affordable housing and T.O.D. can be coupled with highly efficient design to produce a development requiring much less infrastructure than a typical market-based development found in Downtown Miami. This can act as a test-bed for progressive development strategies that can be applied elsewhere in a rapidly urbanizing Miami.

This proposal is an urban garden hybrid that stitches the various communities in Overtown. Overtown is an intersection of dierent transportation infrastructures. However, the northeast area has underserved accessibility to use them. This is reflected in the outdated building stock, a lot of vacant lots along the infrastructure, and people are segregated from the opportunities. Our project stitches those existing underutilized resources together by introducing a new metro mover station, an elevated public realm and multi-income housing units and the integration of mixed-use buildings.

M U LT I-L AY E R E D M E TA B O L I S M This project focuses on the spatial and geographical relationship between the city’s industrial and knowledge production site. Although the city has been heavily investing in its higher education and creative industry, the two sectors fail to construct a pleasant urban environment to attract and keep talents. Furthermore, the discrete spatial arrangement of the two sectors in the city has stalled the potential collaboration between them. Seeing the opportunity of unleashing Zhengzhou’s potential for innovative industry, we focused on creating a new innovation center with mix-use development on the new central spine of Zhengzhou, taking advantage of its location and the existivng infrastructure with which it closely connects to the new Zhengzhou CBD, Zhengzhou International Center and the Longzihu University City. Kisho Kurokawa and Arata Isozaki, the prominent Japanese Metabolist figures, designed the masterplan of this new district. Although their proposal focuses on the flexibility structured with transportation, as you can see in Nakagin Cupsale Tower’s current situation, their “flexibility” is very rigid without any dynamics. Our proposal is the counter-proposal toward the metabolist-designed city, where the land itself serves as the soft infrastructure to create new urban dynamics.

TO THE WEST This project, including three pieces reorganizing the urban fabric

We introduced a series of pedestrian network and the open spaces multi-layered onto the metabolist-designed grid which allows the new urban centers around the transportation hubs well connected to the surrounding neighborhood. With the direct connection to the new centers, the waterfront of the Dongfeng Canal is celebrated as recrea-

tional and vibrant urban frontage with new SOHO development. Meanwhile, by investigating the urban morphology of old Zhengzhou city and successful urban projects, the project proposes an adjustable grid system that allows for flexibility in creating diversified programs with open space for the future development.

“Glass Box” has been a prominent aspiration of new buildings since the era of modernism and still in today. At the same time, “Glass Box” is problematic in terms of the relationship and the interaction with the climate. This project, “Tailored Skin”, investigates the new human-nature relationship by reducing the conflicts between them. “Tailored Skin” not only mediates the harmful force of nature ( which is the solar radiation onto the facade) but also enhance the connectivity of the indoor-outdoor environment. The site is on the riverside of the Tama River which running beside Tokyo Haneda Airport. The primary function of the building is a pharmaceutical research laboratory. Since the site is visible from the airport lobby, it was important for the owner to show their iconic façade to their partners who just arrived in Japan. Also, to create an excellent research environment with a view of the Tama River remained significant in this building design. In this research facility, each researcher has his or her desk in both the laboratory and office spaces in this building. From a functional point of view, quick access between labs and offices was important. The curved plan layout obtains a maximum view of the Tama River from both offices and labs while keeping them running parallel. Also, the solar radiation analysis gives us the unique louver shape that consists”Tailored Skin.” “Tailored Skin“ balances the view of the river and the amount of heat load the fins could reduce.

Precise studies of the louver shape to reduce the direct sunlight on the desk surfaces gives us this iconic shape. A three dimensional sun movement study figured out that the most eective shape of the fins looks like the sail of a ship. It gave us 40 unique shapes first of all, but to make them as low cost as possible, further optimization reduced them into only 6. Through a logical method and engineering, those fins became the symbolic identity of the company showing their spirit of inquiry.

TO THE WEST This project, including three pieces reorganizing the urban fabric, is to revisit parking lot as a cultural charger as well as multi-functional space in Angeleno urban life. Historically, this site is segregated from the surrounding urban fabric, with the railways or significant needs for the tourists’ parking lot. In contrast, Venice Beach has been a center for LA beach culture where a lot of artworks, films, fashions are created. The car culture has been another core of the life in LA. Driving a car to the beach was a prestigious moment for the majority of the people. Thus, this site was continuously suffered from the life aspiration pressure from the downtown LA. While a series of open spaces of different sizes are organized to realize the transition from the metropolitan side to the residential side, in-between parking lots are used as a device to trigger the interaction of different activities happening in those open spaces. This project works as a device to capture the cultural moment that is deeply embedded in the Venice Beach’s urban fabric.

DETAIL SECTION Sectional changes mediates the connection with the context DETAIL PLAN Series of open spaces and pavement materials define the space characters

“First, we approach the site in cars, see the billboard tower, and a bit of the street, and we walk on the street, the opening on the continuous commercial surface attract us to the open spaces in between, and we go in and see how the landscape here is changing. And we may go to the other side of the street to see a different surface that is more porous and small scaled. And then we continue to the sea.”

MUSHUP This project is the siteless exercise for morphological study of urban architecture. First, the combined analysis of one infrastructure project, Norreport Station by COBE architects, and one housing project, Gifu Apartment by SANAA, gives insight on how they are expanding the boundary between public and private life. In the mush up study, we started with extracting out the essential morphologies in both projects. In Norreport it is bump and dips, and in GIFU it is bar configurations. Mushing up those two in dierent directions in 3 dimensional way gave us several configurations to mediate public and private spaces.

MUSH-UP STUDIES OF THE TWO PROJECTS Bump and dips from Norreport, and Grid configurations from GIFU

This final project explores the three-dimensional mush up of the two projects. The bumps and dips from Norreport, and bar and grid from Gifu. It has a rigid grid network in a plan to organize the whole block. Programs are arranged within the bars. In the section, the bumps and dips tie the circulations across

the levels and expand the thickness and functions of the horizontal surface. The bumps and dips mediate the flow on the ground, work as the shade for the apartment units, and make public space above and below. We tested the dierent urban scenarios and investigated the reaction through the models.

My internship at MAD architects in 2011 in Beijing was a big challenge. I only learned architecture at Tokyo University until then, so I had a certain anxiousness that this had limited my architecture horizon. To expand my view, I decided to go to a Chinese firm, MAD Architects, famous for their curvy architecture geometry. This seemed to be the farthest from Japanese architecture culture. I realized after that their design principle is based on Chinese art culture that appreciates nature.

PROJECT INSPIRATION An old Chinese poem about the encounter to the different natural elements

PROJECT ASPIRATION “Fog” structure which embeded in the existing forests

Qingdao is a city located on the east coast of China. The client wanted us to develop a group of luxury villas, each over 2000m2. The site was first developed as a government facility. Even after the buildings were demolished, a variety of trees remained, such as lines of pine trees or a forest of zelkova trees. We focused on the exisitng natural resources on the site and tried to create special spaces to enjoy them, with the series of dramatic encounters. The vision of the project is based on an old Chinese poem by Liu Zongyuan about a quiet walk in the local mountain. The poem includes a detailed illustration of the sound of water or the light reflection on rocks. The project concept is to use a natural vocabulary of forms, such as rocks, fogs, bubbles, and caves, to create the essence of the scenery illustrated in the poem.

Taxonomy is the science of defining and naming groups of biological organisms on the basis of shared characteristics. Structuring the world around you according to a model, a hierarchy, an organized system. Now, the world is being compressed into binary code. Our design addressed the fundamental problems raised by the re-inscription of the human body and mind into the digital, questioning the legitimacy of this gesture as we accelerate toward increasingly disembodied modes of communication and being.
