In celebration of National Day, October begins literally with a bang – dazzling fireworks will erupt over the stunning skyline of Victoria Harbour on the first day of the month, kick-starting the Chinese “Golden Week” when visitors enjoy myriad special offers in shopping malls throughout the city. For those into culinary art, there is no better time to visit Hong Kong, as Hong Kong Wine & Dine Month kicks off with a four-day feast from 22 to 25 October on the Central Harbourfront. Expect plenty of mouth-watering delicacies and beverages from around the world, along with exciting live performances and dazzling sea views. If you are into specifically German beer, head across the harbour for the Marco Polo German Bierfest (16 Oct-7 Nov), where you can drink till you drop to celebrate Oktoberfest, Germany’s renowned beer festival. As for arts and culture, there is loads happening as always – art enthusiasts can seek inspiration among the quality antique and modern pieces at Fine Art Asia (4-7 Oct), one of the leading international fine art fairs in the region, as well as contemporary works from over 60 international galleries at the Asia Contemporary Art Show (8-11 Oct) at the Conrad Hong Kong Hotel in Admiralty. Marking the 15th anniversary of its popular Halloween Fest (2 Oct – 1 Nov), this year Ocean Park is delivering brand new haunted houses alongside spooky live performances for those who are looking to test their nerve or score a ghoulish adrenaline rush. The thrills of this all-day-and-night party with an underworld vibe are waiting for you only until the end of the month. Finally, the Hong Kong Hotels Association is hosting its annual Waiters Race on Chater Road in Central from 2 to 5pm on 1 November. Visitors are welcome to join us to support the runners alongside our cheering team and celebrate together the achievements of the hotel industry. 南丫島
Lamma Island, the third largest island in Hong Kong, is probably the least known to visitors, yet it contains culture, history and nature in abundance. 南丫島是香港第三大島，名氣雖不如大嶼山和香港島，卻有着豐富的文化、歷史及自然資源。

amma Island is located to the southwest of Hong Kong Island. It has two main villages: Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan. Both have natural harbours and it is no surprise that both have been the home to fishermen for many hundreds of years. In contrast to Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, Lamma is peaceful and tranquil with an abundance of natural scenery. Buildings higher than three storeys are prohibited and there are no automobiles – only distinctive slow-moving open-backed vehicles to transport construction materials, along with diminutive fire trucks and ambulances. The community gets around either by foot or on bicycle. Before the arrival of the British, Lamma Island was known as “Pok Liu Chau” or “the place where foreign vessels dock”. Over 1,000 years ago travellers stopped by Lamma Island, rather than Hong Kong Island. In 1931 a priest discovered several stone containers, believed to have been cut during the New Stone Age. Since most of Hong Kong’s relics from the New Stone Age were found on Lamma, it is believed that there have been human settlements on

the island since ancient times. There is also evidence of settlement during the Bronze Age. The Bronze Age in Hong Kong is equivalent to a period spanning from the middle of the Shang dynasty to the Qin dynasty (approximately 3800-3000 BC). Bronze Age relics found on Lamma Island include fishing hooks and stone spearheads at Sham Wan and a stone mould for casting an axe at Sha Po Tsuen. The fisherfolk continued their life here largely undisturbed for centuries. In 1826 the Tin Hau temple at Sok Kwu Wan was built. The goddess Tin Hau is widely revered as the protector of fishermen. It burned down in 2004, but was rebuilt the following year. Tin Hau sits in all her splendour, watching over all who go to sea. Inside the temple is a specimen of a rare Oar Fish, 2.74 metres long and weighing in at 18.14 kilograms when it was caught by local fishermen in 2001. Lamma Island became part of Hong Kong in 1898 when the New Territories were leased to the British. Nothing much changed for the villagers. However, the Japanese took Lo So Shing as a naval base in World War II and

stationed soldiers there. Their intention was to hide speedboats in the caves to launch suicide attacks on the Allies’ warships, but war ended before the plan went ahead. Lo So Shing beach, a pretty little secluded cove, is fifteen minutes walk from Sok Kwu Wan and the entrances to the so-called Kamikaze caves can be seen alongside the path. For the more energetic, the path leads on to Yung Shue Wan. The walk takes an hour or so over the hills with spectacular views across the South China Sea in all directions. The fishermen still ply their trade and as a means of selling the catch a number of seafood restaurants have been set up at both the main villages. A frequent ferry makes the journey from Central to both of them in thirty minutes. Sok Kwu Wan, famous for its floating fish farms, is peaceful on weekdays with a population of around 300. But on weekends the numbers swell as city dwellers come over to feast on fresh seafood at the long row of restaurants facing the bay next to the pier. An afternoon can be spent relaxing under an awning savouring the day’s catch. The muchloved Rainbow restaurant will even send a free boat to Central with prior reservation. To celebrate the island’s fishing heritage, the Lamma Fisherfolk’s Village has been established on a floating platform in the sheltered bay, reached by speedboat in a couple of minutes. 島民的生活卻並沒因此改變。二戰期間，日軍將 島上的蘆須城變為海軍基地，在當地駐紮軍隊， 並在洞穴中藏匿突擊快艇，準備對盟軍船艦進行 自殺式襲擊，這個計劃隨着戰爭的結束而宣告破 產。蘆須城泳灘是南丫島中部的一片小小沙灘， 距索罟灣僅有 15 分鐘行程，途中就可見到日軍 的“神風洞”入口。沿着這條小徑翻山即到榕樹 灣，行程約 1 小時，山下就是南海，煙波浩渺， 海風陣陣，絕對值得一行。 漁民們依舊日日辛勤勞作，捕獲的海產在兩 座村莊的海鮮檔裡均有出售。從中環到南丫島的 渡輪班次密集，僅需半小時就可到達其中一村。 索罟灣的養魚區平日安靜寧謐，只有約300人定 居；一到週末，市民們就蜂擁而至，到碼頭附近 的海鮮餐館享受這些當日捕獲的生猛海鮮，悠閒 地消磨一下午，面朝大海，好不愜意。其中最受 歡迎的天虹酒家還設有賓客專船，免費將事先訂 位的賓客送返中環。 為紀念南丫島的漁民傳統文化，島民們在養 魚區的魚排上建起了“南丫島漁民文化村”，坐 快艇只需幾分鐘就能到達。這座小小的博物館式 主題公園面積約2000平方米，再現漁家生活的文 化與歷史。村內設有展覽廳，陳列古董舢板、傳 統龍舟、漁筏等展品。香港疍家漁民已在南海邊 繁衍生息幾百年，如今漁業已經式微，文化村是 對過去的最好記憶，令遊客在此體驗漁民的文化 與生活。 南丫島雖人煙稀少，卻已吸引了一些島外人 在此置業，週末帶着家人過來小住，並在院前院 後種滿蔬菜、綠草、香蕉和木瓜樹。1952年，著 名自然學家與兩棲類動物學專家約翰·盧文在南丫 島上發現了體積細小的盧文氏樹蛙，這種罕見的 蛙類僅有 2 厘米長，只在香港的一些離島出現。 南丫島還是全港唯一的綠海龜產卵地，這種特殊 的海洋生物在築巢、孵化、生長、繁育期間有着 極強的洄遊特性，如南丫島的深灣就是香港唯一 的綠海龜棲息地，每年6月1日到10月31日，這裡 都會限制進入，以便綠海龜前來繁衍。■

The Village comprises an authentic fishing junk, traditional dragon boats, an exhibition hall, themed folklore booths, fishing rafts, and demonstrations. Here visitors can learn about the heritage and life of the boat people of Hong Kong, the Tanka fisherfolk who have lived around the South China coast for centuries. The fishing industry is in decline, so this village is an important way of keeping their culture in the public eye. Although Lamma is still sparsely populated, some outsiders have made it their home and others have weekend properties here, with their vegetable gardens, lawns, and banana and papaya trees. It was on Lamma that John Romer, a great naturalist and snake specialist, discovered the tiny Romer’s tree frog in 1952. The rare 2cm-long frog is only found on a few outlying islands in Hong Kong. The island is also where green sea turtles lay their eggs. The endangered green turtles are a special group of marine organisms with distinctive navigation behaviour between their nesting, breeding, development and reproduction sites. As Sham Wan is the only existing nesting site for them in Hong Kong, every year from 1 June to 31 October access to the site is restricted to allow the turtles to breed. ■

ight next to the water at the south end of Hong Kong Island, Repulse Bay has long been one of the poshest areas in the territory thanks to its geographical advantage – secluded from the bustle of the city yet not too far from the heart of town, its serene atmosphere is much loved by locals and tourists alike. Following the launch of The Pulse, the entertainment complex next to the popular beach, the area is taking shape as a humming seaside dining hub. Among the current venues, the Balinese joint TRi – whose name derives from the philosophical notion of harmony between man, nature and divinity – is perhaps the classiest. Boasting an exquisite interior exuding an authentic Balinese aura, with rustic furnishings such as lotus-shaped private booths, bamboo basket seats and stone tables alongside antique embellishments, the restaurant has upscaled the tropical traits of the Indonesian island to render an exotic and lush ambience. We sampled a series of dishes to see if its food is as impeccable as its décor. Kicking off our meal were the Sambal Tempeh (HK$80) and Lawar Salad (HK$90), two punchy pre-mains that quickly warmed up our taste buds with a blend of spiciness and acidity from the fermented soybeans and chili green beans respectively. But what blew us away was their signature appetiser Jamur Squid (HK$190) – its slick presentation heralded perfectly seasoned and
grilled French squid as tender as you can imagine. For the mains, we opted for the Scallops Mesanten (HK$230), seared beautifully on the outside while moist on the inside, along with the Iga Sapi (HK$320), another signature dish of TRi. The soft, succulent texture of the Angus short ribs is the scintillating result of 48 hours of slowcooking. Charred with ground coffee, the surface has a pleasant smoky flavour. We also recommend the Seafood Nasi Goreng (HK$150) – although fried rice is such a commonplace in Hong Kong, this one was like no other – the Thai organic rice is soft and light, while the Indonesian soya sauce lifts the dish with a hint of sweetness. Most importantly, we didn’t find it too greasy or heavy. Finally, three desserts served as the end note to our meal – the Panacotta (HK$80), Dadar Gulung (Balinese pancake, HK$80) and Coffee Cocoa (HK$80) were all colourfully presented. While the last two are perhaps more authentically South-East Asian, our vote went to the light and refreshing taste of the coconut panacotta. An enjoyable, holistic culinary journey from start to finish, our visit to TRi impressed us with the finesse of the seasoning and plating of the dishes – credit to Executive Chef Conor Beach, who has a strong background in French cuisine – to the exotic and soothing ambience at TRi. It deserves a lasting place in the city’s dining scene, and we will certainly be back. ■

靜，寧謐的風光深受本地人和遊客的喜愛。自灘畔商場The Pulse開幕以來，淺水灣更逐步變為人氣高漲的海邊餐飲中 心，其中有一家峇里菜餐廳 TRi ，名字來自峇里的傳統哲學 “三界和諧”(Tri Hita Karana)，強調神、人與自然之間的和 諧關係，特別的概念必將帶來特別的驚喜。 TRi 餐廳裝修精美，深具原始的峇里風情。古樸的蓮花 形座籃、竹編懸掛式座椅，石桌旁還有古董裝飾，將這座印 尼島嶼的熱帶特色發揮得淋漓盡致，異國情調與高雅氛圍共 存。我們嘗試了一系列食物，看是否如裝修一般無懈可擊。 首先是Sambal Tempeh (HK$80) 及Lawar Salad (HK$90)，這兩道前菜十分美味，分別來自發酵豆豉和醃青辣 椒的酸辣口感迅速為味蕾做了熱身。招牌前菜Jamur Squid (HK$190)深深打動了我們——擺盤漂亮而靈動，法國魷魚的 調味與燒烤都堪稱完美，肉質鮮嫩，無可比擬。 主菜我們選擇了烤得外焦里嫩的Scallops Mesanten (HK$230)以及TRi的另一招牌菜式Iga Sapi (HK$320)，安格 斯牛肋骨低溫慢煮48小時造就了這一道柔嫩多汁的美味。配 以現磨咖啡粉燒製，表面多了一層令人愉悅的煙熏口感。 我們還推薦Seafood Nasi Goreng (HK$150)——炒飯 在香港雖已司空見慣，這裡的卻獨樹一幟——泰國有機大 米柔軟輕巧，印尼醬油則為米飯添上一絲甜香，最重要的 是毫不油膩。 最後的三道甜品為整餐劃上完美的句號——Panacotta (HK$80) 、Dadar Gulung (HK$80) 及Coffee Cocoa (HK$80)的賣相都色彩繽紛，後兩者略帶東南亞風味，前者 則因其輕盈清爽的口感而得到了我們的一致好評。 在這段從頭到尾都十分愉快過癮的美食之旅中，食材的 調味和擺盤無懈可擊，這都得益於擅長烹製法式菜餚的行政 總廚Conor Beach；餐廳的異國情調與舒適的氣氛也令我們 印象深刻。TRi在香港餐飲界已佔據了獨特而穩固的地位，我 們無疑會再度光臨。■

lose by Lan Kwai Fong, the world-renowned party street in Central, nestles PMQ, the emerging cultural hub that hosts some of the city’s best creative talent. The former police married quarters is now the cradle of many aspiring craftsmen, designers and artists. Of course, it has also drawn a few ambitious restauranteurs, striving to turn it into one of the hottest culinary destinations in town. Led by Michelin-starred master chef Paolo Casagrande, the Isono Eatery and Bar is a Spanishcentric Mediterranean restaurant offering casual dining in an upscale setting marked by the spacious dining area, high ceiling and edgy, glittering metallic adornments that render a slick, modern vibe. Its menu encompasses western culinary traditions from Spain to France to Italy, with pasta, paella and tiramisu sharing the attention. Wondering whether this would do each cuisine justice, we went along to try out some of its signature dishes. First we sampled the Pata Negra Platter (regular HK$195/largeHK$320), which consists of three types of cured ham imported from Spain: the 60-month Iberico ham, Lomito and Coppa. Among them, we found the Coppa slightly too fatty, but although the Lomito was air-cured for only around six months, it managed to impress us with its aroma and smoky flavour.
Next up we plumped for the Classic Seafood Paella (regular HK$240/large $420), a traditional Spanish dish prepared in the authentic manner: the rice is first sautéed and then simmered in fish broth and a saffron, tomato paste and garlic sauce, and finally baked to create a thin crispy layer at the bottom. The shrimps and clams were fresh as expected, and fitted well into the flavoursome, finely-textured rice. Also from the mains list was the Roasted Iberian Pork Shoulder (regular HK$258/large $470), charcoalgrilled to medium rare with a lovely pink centre (since the Iberian pigs are fed only bellota acorns, the meat does not have to be fully cooked). The juice is retained and the sea salt on the surface adds a nice kick along with the homemade barbeque dipping sauce. At this point, almost full, we little expected that our dessert, the Marsala Tiramisu with Chocolate Crumble (HK$80), would be the star of the show. Employing masala wine instead of rum, and chocolate crumbles rather than sponge fingers, this reinvented version was outrageously good – thanks to an incredibly rich, fluffy and creamy taste: absolutely not to be missed. With its classy, relaxing vibe and comprehensive menu, Isono has plenty to offer. What could be better after indulging in a spot of art and culture than a sumptuous meal? Worth checking out. ■

CONCIERGE CHAT CityLife: What is the biggest change in your job as a concierge over these years? Can: The emergence of smartphone devices has really changed the way we provide services. Before the internet age, memorising phone numbers was an important skill for a concierge to get help and look for information. Now most information is available on the web and every search is right at our fingertips. The internet has made our job so much easier. CL: Can you share your most memorable request from a guest? Can: An eastern European guest brought in the motor from his grandfather’s ancient sewing machine and asked where he could get it fixed. We took a photo and emailed it to a list of repair shops to see if they could help. Most said it was impossible because the motor was too old, until one workshop in Shamshuipo

When he was back in Hong Kong two weeks later, he came to tell us delightedly how happy his grandfather was to have the sewing machine working again. CL: What would you tell visitors about Hong Kong that they may not know already? Can: The Octopus card is useful for a lot more than paying for transportation – you can use it at fast food chains and convenience shops as well. CL: Where do you like to go or what do you do in Hong Kong when you are off from work? Can: I spend my free time in Cheung Chau – a relaxing island with lots of things to do: biking along the coast, hitting the waves at Tung Wan, and sampling seafood and delicacies near the pier. ■

Octopus Card 八達通卡 Stored-value cards travel on the MTR, buses, minibuses, trams, and ferries. Available at service counters at the Airport Express and MTR stations. Each card comes with a refundable HK$50 deposit which covers the card cost. Initial stored value cost per card varies: Child (HK$20), Adult (HK$100), and Elder (HK$20). For over a century, double-decker trams on Hong Kong Island have been an inexpensive mode of transportation. You can ride the full length of the 15-kilometre track at $2.30 per adult, $1.20 per child and $1.10 for a senior.
