FOREWORD As someone says: photography is a few seconds snatched from eternity. The images featured at this year’s HKIPF span moments from half a century — there are many instants to revisit and hold in our minds. In October, the Festival unveils its two major exhibitions under the headline of “PROVOKE & Beyond”. Curated by Tokyo-based curator NAGASAWA Akio, Provoke the Age, the Acts: 50 Years’ Quest for a Language to Come seeks to evoke the shifting cityscape and social atmosphere that surrounded the PROVOKE era of postwar Tokyo. Taipei-based curator HUANG Yaji puts the spotlight on NAKAHIRA Takuma (1938-2015), a co-founder and central figure of PROVOKE, in an eponymous solo show presented in four chronological stages that illuminate the artist’s a lifelong interrogation of images. In November, the group exhibition “B/W Nostalgia” reveals the artistry of traditional silver gelatin printing, with its unique humani touch. The exhibition features work by members and peers of the Hong Kong 35mm Photography Society. In December, the Festival presents a retrospective of the Hong Kong photographic artist Joseph FUNG Hon Kee, who turns 80 this year. “Time / Space: Brief as Photos – Dialogue between Joseph Fung and his Contemporaries” surveys Fung’s prolific artistic practice and features tribute works by ten visual artists. The Festival also launches the inaugural Satellite Exhibitions, following an open call for exhibition proposals that garnered an enthusiastic response from local and overseas visual practitioners alike. More than 20 Satellite Exhibitions will open in different corners of Hong Kong in October and November and run concurrently with the HKIPF. —— In 1970, PROVOKE co-founder Nakahira Takuma published his first photobook For A Language to Come, which heralded a new era in photography with its fierce and astonishing images. In appropriating the title of Nakahira Takuma’s seminal work for the theme of this year’s HKIPF, “A language to come”, we hope to provoke reflection on the photographic language of today and in turn expand the definition of the language of photography.

Language is a bridge for exchange and communication. It is a starting point for moving forward on different paths. This year, the Festival also makes its first crossover into design, engaging in dialogue with its abstract language. We are honoured to have invited two designers to participate: Taiwanese book designer WANG Zhi Hong designed the poster and catalogue for the headline exhibition “PROVOKE & Beyond”, and young Hong Kong designer Sunny Wong re-designed the HKIPF’s visual identity. The two designers will also create original works in response to the theme and content of this year’s Festival. In the future, we will again take photography beyond the realm of visual arts and initiate more crossovers with literature, film, dance, music, and so forth. We look forward to continuing to explore new directions of photographic expression.

10 月 揭 幕 的 主 題 展 覽「PROVOKE & Beyond 挑 釁 以 外 」， 有來自東京的長澤章生策展的「挑釁時代 —— 探索影像表達 50 年」， 試圖以十二位藝術家的作品，勾勒攝影《PROVOKE》時代的前後 氛圍；來自台北的策展人黃亞紀，則聚焦《PROVOKE》靈魂、創 辦人之一中平卓馬，以同名個展追溯其一生對影像的深刻叩問。 11 月有重溫銀鹽手工質感與人文溫度的「黑白情懷」聯展，展出 香港卅五攝影研究會一眾成員及其友好的銀鹽作品。 12 月有今年年屆 80 的攝影家馮漢紀先生之回顧展「時 ／空：暫如 照片 ── 馮漢紀與當代攝影對談」，展示馮氏一生的豐碩創作，及 十位視覺藝術家的致敬之作。 與此同時，我們今年首度嘗試策劃衛星展覽提案，出乎意料獲得 不少海內外影像工作者的迴響；20 多個設定於香港不同角落的展覽， 即將於 10 至 11 月份，與攝影節同步發生。 ——
1970 年，《PROVOKE》 （挑釁）攝影雜誌創辦人之一中平卓馬先生， 出版其首本攝影集《For A Language To Come 》 （為了該有的語言）， 以有如風激電飛的影像，預告攝影新時代的到來。 我們挪用中平卓馬的名著標題，定為今年攝影節主題「A langange to come」，意圖引發對當下攝影語言的省思，也想藉此擴大對攝影 語言的定義。 語言是交流和溝通的橋樑，也是推動一切進步的起點。 今年我們初嘗跨界到設計，跟設計的抽象圖像語言交流，請到台灣 書本設計師王志弘為我們設計主題展覽「挑釁以外」之海報和場刊， 和香港年青設計師 Sunny Wong 重新設計攝影節的視覺識別，與此 同時，兩位亦會就本年攝影節的主題和內容，創作回應作品。

At its inception, PROVOKE magazine was curated by art and photography critic TAKI Koji and photographer NAKAHIRA Takuma. The poet OKADA Takahiko and photographer TAKANASHI Yukata were later invited to join as members, with MORIYAMA Daido also joining from the second issue. Despite its closure after only the third issue, PROVOKE has become an icon in the Japanese art world. The 2018 Hong Kong International Photo Festival spotlights the legendary magazine in a landmark exhibition “Provoke the Age, the Acts: 50 Years’ Quest for a Language to Come” curated by Tokyobased curator NAGASAWA Akio. Through the eyes of a dozen emerging and prolific artists of the 1960s and 1970s – including Nakahira Takuma, Moriyama Daido, Tomatsu Shomei, Sawatari Hajime, Suda Issei, and the late Hamaguchi Takashi – we see the Tokyo of the PROVOKE era: a shifting metropolis in the midst of global upheaval, and a modern Japanese society in rapid transformation.

First published in 1968, the legendary photography magazine PROVOKE of post-World War II Japan shook the art world and subverted traditional aesthetics of photography with its are, bure, boke (“grainy, blurry, out of focus”) B/W images. The magazine encapsulated the social atmosphere of the late 1960s, challenged existing photographic forms and frameworks, and continues to have a profound influence on Japanese photographers today.

Accompanying the first PROVOKE exhibition ever to be held in Asia, this special talk by IIZAWA Kotaro, author of innumerable books on Japanese photography and the founder and driving editorial force behind the 1990s photography quarterly déjà-vu, will focus on the historical context of PROVOKE magazine. In this illustrated talk, he will discuss how photographers NAKAHIRA Takuma, TAKANASHI Yutaka, and MORIYAMA Daido, art critic TAKI Koji, and poet OKADA Takahiko ran this magazine in the turbulent 1960s and how the PROVOKE movement transformed post-war Japanese photography and ways in which it continues to activate thought throughout Asia today.

NAGASAWA Akio (1968 - ) is Director of Akio Nagasawa, both a gallery and publisher, and also Director of Daido Moriyama Photo Foundation. He curates exhibitions internationally, including the shows at his own two Tokyo gallery spaces in Ginza and Aoyama. Nagasawa also publishes photo books and catalogues and provides art direction consultancy for commercial facilities such as hotels and boutiques. Major exhibitions and events he has curated include “Labyrinth” by MORIYAMA Daido at Les Rencontres d’Arles, 2013, “Pas de Deux” by HOSOE Eikoh and William Klein at Les Rencontres d’Arles, 2016, “Daido Moriyama Printing Show” at Tate Modern, London, 2012, and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris, 2016.

BEYOND THE RECORD WORKSHOP ON PROTEST PHOTOGRAPHY
以攝影為創作媒介，其作品圍 繞人文與地域等社會議題，亦 嘗試探索其他媒介並延伸攝影 之可能性。 An artist who creates through participation in response to various social issues, Terry Ng believes ‘protest’ is to challenge pre-existing/established boundaries. “Beyond the Record: Workshop on Protest Photography” begins with an introduction to eminent Japanese photographers associated with this genre, including Tomatsu Shomei, Kano Tenmei, Kitai Kazuo, and Hamaya Hiroshi, and a guided appreciation of related works featured in the “PROVOKE” exhibition. Participants then reflect on and discuss the photography produced as a response to events with the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong. Ng will then discuss the participants’ own creative approaches* and will also present a creative project of his own that he had never implemented. The workshop concludes with an introduction to the important works of protest photography of selected Hong Kong photographers. *Each participant should prepare a creative proposal for discussion.

NAKAHIRA Takuma (1938-2015) is perhaps the most important yet most underrated figure in Japanese photography. A pioneering thinker and writer, he engaged himself in relentless interrogation about the theory and practice of image-making throughout his entire life. As co-founder of PROVOKE, the experimental magazine synonymous with his trademark are, bure, boke (grainy, blurry, out of focus) style, Nakahira helped revolutionise post-war Japanese photography and influenced countless artists.

Regardless, it was not long before Nakahira, a sensitive and deeply introspective person, gradually renounced his iconic style. Seeing that photography had pushed reality further away, he destroyed all his photographs in 1973 and set out to propose new theories and methodologies. Yet disillusionment set in, and ultimately he fell to the nadir of his artistic practice, suffering acute alcohol poisoning in 1977, with traumatic memory loss and aphasia. This series of events has contributed to his relative anonymity. “Nakahira Takuma”, the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong of work by the late artist, is curated by Taipeibased curator HUANG Yaji. The landmark exhibition is displayed across two levels of the venue as a way to examine the various phases of Nakahira’s creative practice from the 1960s to 2015: from PROVOKE to For a Language to Come (1968-1970); from ‘Circulation’ to ‘Overflow’ (1971-1974), and ultimately to his colour series (2003-2015). The exhibition illuminates Nakahira’s explorations in photographic thinking and practice, which eventually culminated in his shift to colour photography, described as a “view point devoid of subjectivity”, which stands in stark contrast to the directions taken by most photographers or theories of photography—particularly the mainstream perspectives on photography in the West.

HUANG Yaji, born in 1976, in Taipei, is the owner of the gallery, Each Modern. Formerly aura gallery taipei, from 2014 to 2017, Each Modern is committed to inventive art forms and fostering international dialogue by bringing to light the uniqueness of each artist’s practice. A pivotal player in Taiwan’s art world, the gallery focuses on the avant-garde, emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from China and Taiwan, and international photographers. Prior to being a gallerist, Huang was an independent writer and curator.
黃 亞 紀， 生 於 1976 年，Each Modern 亞 紀 畫廊主理人。前身是亦安畫廊（台北，2014 2017）的亞紀畫廊，旨在通過展現藝術家的獨 特性創作，以此推廣跨地區性藝術形式與對話。 作為台灣藝術界地位舉足輕重的亞紀畫廊，其 眼光聚焦於中國內地與台灣本土創作前衛的中 堅力量和新勢力影像創作，同時包括國際級攝 影大師作品。在經營畫廊之前，黃亞紀是一名 獨立評論家與策展人。

SPECIAL SCREENINGS “EXTREMELY GOOD LANDSCAPES” A DOCUMENTARY ON NAKAHIRA TAKUMA 專題放映 中平卓馬紀錄片 《絕佳的風景》 Nakahira Takuma, initially a magazine editor, became a photographer through his friendship with Moriyama Daido. When Nakahira fell into a coma in 1977, he lost all his past memories and nearly lost his life. While recovering in Okinawa, he slowly began taking pictures again, and later, when living in Yokohama, although still suffering from memory loss, he photographed every day with his Canon New F-1. Nakahira found a way to lead his life again. Director Homma Takashi, a photographer himself, has documented the everyday life of this legendary photographic artist, critic, writer, and philosopher in this 40-minute film.
中平卓馬結識森山大道後，就由雜誌編輯轉為攝 影師，並以其對攝影與視覺文化的尖銳批評及前 衛 攝 影 作 品， 顛 覆 攝 影 界。1977 年， 他 酒 精 中 毒，昏迷，並與死亡擦肩，事後失去了所有記憶； 但翌年，就在沖繩休養期間，就恢復拍照了。後 來移居橫濱，失去的記憶還是沒有回來，但他每 天 也 會 把 Canon New F-1 掛 在 肩 膊 上， 外 出 拍 照，日日如是。中平卓馬，這戰後日本攝影的傳奇， 在人生的後段，過著異常規律的生活，由同樣身 為攝影師的本間隆，紀錄在這 40 分鐘的影片裡。

As the silver gelatin process renders post-processing difficult, the B/W images exude a sense of authenticity, purity and depth, along with exquisite yet, subtle tonal gradations, rich texture and luminosity, and of course the lasting, archival quality of the prints themselves. Many photographic artists prefer this analogue imaging process for the challenges it poses and the spontaneity and uncertainty involved – a conscious if not intellectual choice.

An early prototype of photographic technology, blackand-white silver gelatin prints have become a classic since the invention of photography more than one century ago.
The “B/W Nostalgia” exhibition, organised by a group of Hong Kong photographers devoted to silver gelatin traditions, features the work of 26 artists. The series displays a diverse range of photographic and production techniques, from ‘straight’ printing to the more unconventional methods of wet-plate photography and platinotypes.
銀鹽黑白攝影是攝影術的原初形式，其技術在攝影 術發明一百多年來得到高度發展，成為影像藝術的 經典。 由於銀鹽黑白攝影難以後期改變，擁有可信性，純 粹性以及深厚感的影像氣質，而且色調細膩，不易 褪色，令不少黑白攝影愛好者始終沒有放棄傳統的 顯影技法 —— 他們追求銀鹽影像獨特的視覺質感， 崇尚在拍攝時重視思考和因時因地運用技巧的即 時創作方式。 黑白情懷雅集及展覽，是由香港一眾堅持運用傳統 銀鹽技術創作的攝影家組織及舉辦。本次展示和香 港國際攝影節合作舉辦，共有 26 位參展者。展出 作品的攝影方式和製作工藝豐富多樣：除常規工法 外，還有攝影史上出現過的玻璃濕版火棉膠攝影、 鉑金製相等工藝，是極難得的一次傳統攝影技藝 匯展。

For nearly five decades, Fung has served in multiple roles: photographer, educator, writer, and curator, continually demonstrating impeccable skills and versatility. This exhibition “Time / Space: Brief as Photos — Dialogue between Joseph Fung and his Contemporaries” is a selection of his iconic works from the 1980s to the present. It is divided into four sections that trace the chronology of his creative path:

With his forward-looking vision of photographic art, Joseph Fung Hon Kee has been a key figure in the contemporary art world of Hong Kong and mainland China.
I China, My China II Chicago Years III Avant-Garde Vision IV Homecoming The exhibition explores and spotlights Fung’s prolific artistic practice which spans social documentary photography, new documentary photography, conceptual photography, manipulated or paraphotography, performative portraitures, digital imaging and photo-installation. Ten prominent visual artists have been invited to provide responding works and video interviews in parallel with the stages of Fung’s artistic practice; the dialogue sheds light on the development of Hong Kong contemporary photography over the past 40 years.

HKIPF launched its first Open Call for Satellite Exhibitions this year, and has selected 26 visual practitioners working across different forms of expression to participate in the Festival. Each artist has created an exhibition that echoes the Festival theme and incorporates photography as a key element. The exhibitions will be on public display at 11 locations, connecting artists with various communities across Hong Kong.

16.11.2018 3/F Mini forum, Eslite Bookstore TST A three-part photographic series of everyday glimpses, ‘Chai Wan Fire Station’ by CHAN Dick was published as a photobook by Tokyo-based Case Publishing, in conjunction with its showcase in exhibitions in Japan and Europe in 2017. A seminal work of Chan’s in recent years, the series was awarded 1st Place in the Book: Fine Art (Professional) category at the Tokyo International Foto Awards in 2016. At this talk, Chan and Onishi will discuss their collaboration, offering insights for photographic practitioners in Hong Kong.

香港國際攝影節簡介 The Hong Kong International Photo Festival was initiated in 2010 by 19 Hong Kong photographers across several generations. The Festival focuses on a different theme in each edition, introducing noteworthy photographers, trends, and movements. Through exhibitions, lectures, seminars, workshops, fairs, and screenings, HKIPF bridges Hong Kong and international visual practitioners, and creates conversations between people and place, past and present, and oneself and the world. HKIPF discusses issues and perspectives. In 2018, HKIPF launched its first Open Call for Satellite Exhibitions and has selected visual practitioners working across different forms of expression to participate. Each artist has created an exhibition that echoes the Festival theme and incorporates photography as a key element. The exhibitions will be on public display at a range of venues, connecting artists with various communities across Hong Kong. The Hong Kong International Photo Festival is organized by the Hong Kong Photographic Culture Association. In 2011, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council honoured the Association with the Award for Arts Promotion. In 2014 and 2015, the Association was financially supported by the Springboard Grant under the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.

2018 攝 影 節 首 度 策 劃「 衛 星 展 覽 提 案 」 計劃——以提案公開徵集方式，邀請來自 不同領域背景的影像創作者，策劃座落城 中 不 同 場 所 的 展 覽 並 與 攝 影 節 同 步 舉 行， 期 望 借 此 提 供 藝 術 家 與 觀 眾 交 流 的 平 台， 打通社區脈絡，讓藝術與大眾產生更密切 的連結，共同建構一個日常生活美學與社 區體驗兼備的國際攝影節。 香港國際攝影節由香港攝影文化協會主辦， 於 2011 年 榮 獲 香 港 藝 術 發 展 局 頒 發「 藝 術推廣獎」，並於 2014 年及 2015 年獲香 港 特 別 行 政 區 政 府「 藝 能 發 展 資 助 計 劃 」 的躍進資助。
