The Jura is out They’re outnumbered 25 to one. Only 200 people keep on with their daily struggles amongst the 5,000 deer on the 368 square kilometer large island. The deer were there first obviously, and not surprisingly the name derives from the Old Norse meaning of Deer Island. The isle of Jura is part of the Inner Hebrides and used to belong to the mighty Scottish Campbell clan. It is now famous for three reasons, and three reasons alone. In the north, George Orwell spent the last years of his life in an abandoned white farmhouse, not far from the sea, while writing the classic-to-be novel 1984. On the opposite side of the island, in an empty boathouse in Ardfin, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty of the KLF in 1994 burned one million pounds. Was it art? A statement? Lunacy? All they asked of you is to tell them why. The third thing Jura has been made famous for is the whisky. 201 years ago the distillery of Jura opened in modest fashion. But Jura whisky was actually present earlier than that. Before 1781 the inhabitants were allowed to distil whisky ”for personal consumption” – however much that would be. Between 1781 and 1810 there was a ban on the drink, but the making and the smuggling of it caused trouble. The ban was eventually lifted, a smuggler’s cave in Craighouse, Jura, became the site of the Jura distillery. Things worked fine for a while, but eventually economic despair caused the distillery falling into disrepair. The Jura distillery as we know it today shot to prominence in the 1960s after being rebuilt in the 50s. Taller stills allowing the distillery to create an eclectic mix of malts, helped Juro to differentiate themselves from its island neighbours. Their smooth, warm and subtle supply range from a ten year old through a 16 year old and the Jura Prophecy to the smokier variety in Jura Superstition. There’s plenty of good reasons to go to the isle of Jura, even though the best reason has now found its way over to you. But if Drummond and Cauty of the KLF ever come back to Jura with another million pounds, they would actually only be a couple of million short from buying Ardfin, where they burned their million, itself – it’s for sale. Or they could just buy an enormous amount of great whisky.
