01 Region Shanghai, China is one of the largest cities in the world and one of the fastest developing. Around every corner there is a new high rise under construction. I was fortunate to spend my internship in such a culturally diverse place and gained a great level of understanding into the world of Architecture in China.

01 Work Gensler was a good sponsoring firm and my first experience working directly in the field of architecture. I learned what I am capable of and now know this is the right field for me. For most of my internship, I worked on a mixed-use office complex called KIC. It is a 3 tower spec office building campus and each tower is 50m (164ft) tall and about 20,000 square meters (215,278sf) in area.

Concept Massing

01 Design In SD I helped develop the overall massing strategy for the buildings. I developed facade sections as studies of different louver options for shading the building face. At the close of my internship the project was in the final stages of DD. I helped develop many aspects of the design as well as assisting on other projects within the office.

01 Diagramming In SD I helped develop circulation diagrams for pedestrians and vehicles. Later I aided in production of more detailed diagrams such as fire truck circulation paths and building sections. I also did general climate energy modeling in Autodesk Vasari. It helped us better understand solar patterns on the site and buildings.

01 Technical Drawings The project moved into Revit in DD. We started with training because the team was new to the software. Our Project Architect managed the drawing set and later I took over as the Revit model manager for the team. This was my first major leadership role on the KIC project.

Study Model

01 Modeling A colleague and I created the study models. We were able to play with the form and test design ideas. Final model production was typically done by professionals. The fast pace of projects in China makes quick model building essential.

02 Region The Flint Hills are a beautiful natural feature of Kansas that define the landscape of the Manhattan area. MHK 2030 is a gateway to the area and there is no better introduction to the place than a strong connection to the landscape. Program

How can an architectural corridor manifest a dwelling place?

A dwelling place is space humans spend time rather than merely use as a transition. How do you make an airport a place of desirable dwelling rather than a corridor? The projects goal is to restore an intimate human aspect to airport terminals rather than treating people as mere ticket holders.

Based on research and the thesis, I compared the existing conditions to similar scale airports and developed the MHK 2030 program.

02 Site Located 3.5 miles southwest of Manhattan, MHK offers general aviation and commercial services for the Flint Hills region. It also helps meet the needs of Ft. Riley Military Base and serves as a gateway to the area. The site is removed from the city and lacks adjacent development. A large amount of the surrounding land is zoned for agriculture. Design The goal of the terminal experience is to maintain a strong visual connection to the airside of MHK. The terminal is arranged to maximize viewing opportunities towards the site.

MHK 2030 is a place of accessibility. Meaning that it has the potential to be a public destination rather than restricted airport land. The spectacle of flying is a very important aspect that commercialized airports have lost. The new master plan experience will be one of connection to the site with open views of the vast rolling hills. It will be a human experience unlike the modern model of an airport terminal.

03 Artist: Maya Lin Location: New York, NY

03 Region The Chelsea District in Manhattan, New York is home to the Maya Lin Gallery of the Arts. A place to showcase Maya Linâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work only. The gallery is in a dense urban area adjacent to The High Line and architectural works by Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, and Toyo Ito.

03 Program The images show the three primary categories of Maya Linâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work. MEMORIALS, SCULPTURE, and ARCHITECTURE make up her diverse portfolio. Maya Lin is known for her environmentalist approach to landscape oriented artwork. Topography is a large idea that influences her sculpture.

03 Site The gallery is located on 19th street in between 10th and 11th ave. and The High Line runs directly next to the site. The site model below reflects the layered fashion of Maya Linâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artwork. The rounded buildings hint at the conceptual idea of the project.

Topographic Urban Fabric

03 Concept The goal was to relate the concept to the mind of Maya Lin. I chose to think of the New York urban fabric as its own rolling landscape. The first two sketches are interpreted site sections of the district which I used to generate the formal idea of the building. Through play and sketch I arrived at an elevation formal idea which divides the building into two sections. I used these sections to split the served and servant spaces. The green represents the gallery space for Maya Linâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work.

Section Perspective

03 Design The section perspective is a key drawing in this project. The goal was to establish a single drawing that gives a lot of information about the building. It gives more insight into the function of the building than a traditional section.

The third level plan shows how the public can access the building from The High Line. This connection is meant to increase the amount of people coming to the gallery and give an experiential option to come and go in different ways.

Ground Floor

03 Design The facade of the public gallery is louvered to block direct sun and allow natural lighting. The second cladding system is brick to tie into the local vernacular. The primary structure is steel post and beam construction with some variation at the cantilevered top.

03 Model The focus of the model was the overall form and the facade system. The goal was to imitate the actual lighting condition of the galleries. The resulting space was dynamic and inwardly focused.

Tear Drop

Arizona is home to a simultaneously beautiful and harsh landscape. The rock formations have been shaped over great amounts of time and the life there is highly adapted to deal with the climate.

Indian Painting

There is great cultural and artistic heritage in Winslow Arizona. The Navajo and Hopi Indian tribes both have roots in the area and their artistic style has helped shape the culture of art in Arizona. Program

The building houses a culture primarily focused on the inspiration and production of art. It is first a private sanctuary for artists and second a public venue. The rock formation called the Tear Drop, is a source of inspiration for the design of the building. The square Indian painting is part of the inspiration for the overall ordering idea of spaces. 49

Concept Sketch

The use of rammed earth is one way to create a sense of place. Building with earth from the place is the ideal approach. I also created an artistic dissonance with the use of metal panel to contrast local ideas with something new. Concept The scheme needed a strong relationship to the place and current time. The Tear Drop inspired a focus on the framing of views. Indian art and painting inspired a geometric emphasis. The textiles and paintings done by the local Indians have a very strong focus on geometry and orthogonal patterns. 51

04 Design The first Revit rendering is taken from 2nd street. The facade is boldly wearing its geometry to show the cultural ideas of the area. The main public entrance is embraced by the building; directing people towards the front door. The second level and third are the artists domain. The public never goes up there unless invited by someone. The second floor is for working and the third is for living.

04 Design The interior Revit rendering shows the entry atrium. This is the main entry to the building and the space in which the building is organized around. The large rendering is showing off the buildings geometry and the essence of the project. The point reaching to the sky is emphasizing the internal gallery. That part of the building is where the results of the artists work gets put on display.

04 Model A 1/16” = 1’-0” model was used to show the overall geometry and materiality of the building.

05 Region The Tallgrass Prairie is a beautiful natural feature of Kansas that is often taken for granted. The vast rolling hills are one of the forgotten wonders of the U.S. Program The Tallgrass Prairie Visitors Center will be an educational place to learn about the prairie and bring awareness of the ranch. It is an opportunity to educate people how we used to live on the prairie not so long ago. The ranch outside Strong City is now a historical landmark. The vacated buildings are an example of a local architecture.

05 Site Directly adjacent to highway 177 is home to the future visitors center. The building site is vast and beyond the needs of the building. The slope goes downward towards the south with the ranch overlooking the visitors center. Materials The material palette is inspired by the local vernacular. Limestone is an abundant local resource and gives the building a sense of fit in the landscape. Wood is used as a secondary material that compliments the stone and landscape. Concept The design needed to relate to the vastness of the prairie and maintain long horizontal lines in its context. The program is organized in a pinwheel fashion as a reference to the prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright. Design Sketches

05 Design The Revit rendering is what visitors see on their approach to the building. The plan shows the pinwheel idea with the center as a void. I wanted the heart of the project to be the most traveled area. It is a circulation space where all visitors will pass through. The elevation illustrates the long horizontal lines of the building.

Design The section perspective illustrates the building assemblies. It is showing the detail intentions of the project. The interior Revit rendering is the lobby of the museum side of the visitors center.

The intention was to give a sense of outside spaces around the building and the massing itself. The perspective views into and around the building give a sense of the actual experience. I learned how to use a laser cutter on this project.
