Introduction Exeter Public Library Today
The three words used to describe the Exeter Public Library are Inviting, Growth and Community. Everything about this library is inviting; the atmosphere, the people, and the overall look of the library. When you think library, you think learning and expanding your mind. The Exeter Public Library exhibits this not only by the expansion of books but also in its youth members. Some kids go to the library at a young age, and watching them grow intellectually is inspiring. This then leads to community. Due to the small population 03
having a community library really helps bring them together. The Exeter Public Library can be described in many ways but these three words; Inviting, Growth, and Community truly represent the library.
04
Introduction Exeter Public Library Strategy
After looking at the final design logo for the Exeter Public Library, coming up with a color was a little tricky. But, after using our three words; Inviting, Growth and Community, we have decided to go with the color orange. This bright, warm, and inviting color really suits this particular library. We played around with the arrangement of the colors by inverting the design; making the letters colored and the background white or another alternate color. We have concluded that keeping the circle one color really makes the logo pop and stand 05
out from the rest. The color is also a very warm, creating a positive and inviting environment for the community.

Elements New Exeter Public Library Symbol
When it comes to the wordmark, we used the abbreviations ‘EXE’ in our symbol. The E’s surround an X shaped starburst design. The starburst creates a playful, appealing purpose. Keeping the letters white with the orange circle as the background helps make the name ‘EXE’ stand out. When having to include the library’s name, using a lower case wordmark is simpler and cleaner when put on stationary pieces.
07
When placed correctly and to scale, the space between the wordmark and symbol should be approximately have .25 inches of space in between
08
Elements Symbol + Wordmark
When the group was deciding on color choices for the symbol, we kept in mind the main ideas that the library wants to portray (Community, Growth, and Inviting.) After many color studies, we narrowed our choices down to oranges, and purples. We felt that the oranges are exciting and pleasing to the eye, drawing attention because of its natural hue. Purples also work well for situations that do not involve flashiness or a lot of attention. The purple chosen is not so dark that it creates too much contrast, and not so light that the inner 09
design gets lost. The usage of the different colored designs are up to the users discretion, but ultimately, they can be interchanged as long as the symbol is the same color as the wordmark and possibly all the text.

Elements Symbol Color
The Exeter Public Library wordmark can be seen in 2 different ways. One way is with the wordmark to the right of the symbol. This enables the design to work on horizontal layouts (envelope, letterhead, newsletter, etc). The other way to assemble wordmark and symbol would be to put the wordmark underneath the symbol, this way, the design could work well on vertical layouts (vertical business cards, or other tall thin arrangements.
11
The use of a background color surrounding the logo, is not recommended but can be incorporated. Since the circle surrounding the interior design is already a solid color, using another layer of color may get distracting and pull the eye away from the focus area.
12
Elements Alternate Configurations
When the group was thinking about designs for the business cards, we felt that giving the option of a busy design for the back would be a good idea. What we came up with were mostly involved in circles. The circle is a large part of the design for the symbol but it can also be easily carried into other designs. to emphasize community, growth, and inviting, we kept the circles and the fun colors in a pattern that changes throughout the display. This “movement is meant to resemble growth. 13

The color for the symbol and wordmark was chosen based on the “inviting” theme. After doing research on the color orange, we found that orange is a happy and exciting color, also resembling the warmth that is offered by the library.

Myriad Pro Bold and Myriad Pro are the only two fonts used in this identity. The primary font, Myriad Pro Bold, is seen on the primary logo and Myriad Pro is used for secondary type (ie. Address, phone number, email, etc.)

Myriad is a humanist sans serif font designed by Robert Slimbach, and Carol Twombly. It is best known for its usage by Apple Inc. By keeping the feel of the typeface humanistic, it creates a more natural feel as opposed to a unemotional serif font. By keeping the font natural it compliments the inviting and warm feeling that is portrayed in the symbol.

Salutation, A piece of stationery is obviously printed for the purpose of printing a letter. Therefore, when the letter is absent from the letterhead it is meaningless. It is the belief of Malcolm Grear that the letterhead should not appear as a piece of advertising, but should subtly convey the information that is desired. A letterhead is one of the most used pieces of material that represents the organization’s personality, and therefore, a system directed to the secretarial staff should be established in the beginning of the process. The preferred typeface choice for all correspondence is Times, 10 point on 14 point leading. This face is readily available and does not compete with the signature or secondary information and reproduces well on ink jet and laser printers, copies and fax sheets. When larger type is preferred, the letter may be typed in 11 point with 15 point leading. Letters are typed flush left (rag right), single space between lines, double space between paragraphs. Do not indent. Double space between the last line of the letter and the complimentary close and four returns below the close to the typed signature. The left margin is 2 inch; the top margin to the date is 1.25 inches from the tope edge. Depending on the length of the letter, the bottom margin is 1.25 inches. The maximum typing width is six inches. Sincerely, The Name of the Person Sender Title of Person Sender

The folders design has a contrasted shape from the letter head. The colors are inversed so that the circular shape is left white and the surrounding shape is orange. This contrast of design is enough to change up the similarity of the stationary system but not so much that it isolates itself from the others.

For the tote bag, we kept in mind the budget of the library, and simple was the best way for us to design. The basic symbol by itself is unique enough of a logo that it will evoke questions and interest. As for printing, it will be inexpensive if kept to a basic black, however, using the orange is always an option. If the orange is used though, the tone of the bag will need to be a lighter color to let the orange pop.
