ABOUT ME

As a boy, I remember watching a cartoon where an old wild cat tells the you ng sea otter, “Why do you think we live, kid ? Maybe we are living to ‘see’ things.” I don’t think anyone has taken these words as seriously as I did, for it being a cartoon. Growing up in Japan and the US, I was allowed to see both sides of the earth equally well, and this has widened my perspective in many ways. Soon, I became interested in finding out how big this world really is, so I decided to travel and see as many places as I could. Up to today, I have been fortunate enough to visit over 50 cities in 15 countries around the world, and the world hasn’t stopped amazing me. I am always eager to see new things. “Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.” (Charles R. Swindoll) I believe this is the same for design. Circumstance is not a matter but a catalyst; 90% of design is the outcome of our action, such as researching, discovering, and experimenting. In other words, no matter what it is that I am designing, the potentials are always limitless.

PS SQUARED

Research is a short-cut to a successful product. PS Squared is a conceptual yet solid representation of an artifact-dependent design, meaning that it’s not a device that simply integrated found demands, but one that discovers and cultivates what users would want.

KIREI Designed by

HIROTAKA MATSUI

Nano-clean Toilet Kirei [kee-ray] is a bidet-integrated self-cleaning toilet which solves insanitary problems in the bathroom, to the ground. Its visual novelty and its new functions change the way we perceive toilets, from “a place we contaminate” to “a place filth is terminated”.

KIREI

KIREI

“ SELF-WASHING,

SELF-SANITIZING ” ERA OF TOILET

Similar to the idea of laundry machines or dish washers, Kirei washes its bowl by itself, and with its sterilizer lamp, it also keeps itself sanitized. This toilet not only cleans your buttock and toilet, but it consequently maintains the bathroom environment healthy. Its visual novelty as well as the new functions categorizes its self into a new group of products, to change people’s routine into an easier thing. How Kirei becomes an effective toilet is not simply by mingling new functions on a fresh outfit. How each components appear, and where they are allocated are all pertained to the solution to the existed problems. Because toilet has nothing but only one purpose, the structural form is very honest, and because of it’s minimal structure, every parts are heavily interrelate to each other.

18 19

WHAT’S THE MATTER ?

After all, the cleaning is on us Though, we live in the time where a toilet even washes a buttock, toilet itself will continue to get dirty. Cleaning it, is the most unwanted task of all times.

It’s not “just“ dirty. Leaving a toilet dirty, in fact, will harm us much more than we think it does. For instance, flushing a dirty toilet with the lid up can cause the particles of polluted water to fly out into the air, possibly settle on door a knob, or even on your toothbrush and cups.

Stay away from toilet brushes Toilet brushes are the “nuke“ in your bathroom. While a brush may clean the toilet bowl on the surface, toilet brush is also a perfect breeding grounds for germs and moulds. Mishandling a brush could only spread the germs to have a filthier bathroom.

People change, but toilet doesn’t People in the newer generation are getting more and more hypersensitive to germs and anything that is visually displeasing. While so, because toilets don’t change, toilets can only be regarded as more and more intimidating.

Never Exciting When we compare lives of today with those of 30 years ago, lifestyles have become so much easier and many amazing technologies many has dreamed are becoming true. However, the standard quality of toilet in terms of function and aesthetic appearance hasn’t quite surprised us yet. It always seems to be just a white chunk of ceramic or plastic.

CLEANING WRONG

Breaking the Vicious Cycle of Bathroom Environment After series of researches and tests, a fact has been found that while many people think they were cleaning the bathroom, they were in fact spreading toilet germs without knowing in the entire bathroom space and exposing themselves to a harmful environment. Without knowing the correct way to clean a toilet, it is very likely to put yourself into a vicious cycle where germs constantly exist and grow.

As a possible solution, the following studies have been conducted

Commercial Viability of Sterilizer Safe & Energy Efficient Diamond LED Organic Bacterium Bacillus Subtilis degrades urinary calculus, protein, lipid, Carbohydrate. Flushing Technology Regio by Inax proves the viability of air pressure control system

1. Front Tank System - Hybrid flushing system is a technology where both water pressure from the water pipe and the water tank is used to flush. Kirei takes this advanced system further. By replacing the internal tank from the back to the vacant space under the seat, Kirei enables to drastically slim the body as well as increase the tank water pressure.

AIR PISTON

2. Reflective UV Diffuser - Coated on the inner rim of the lid. 3. Spiral bowl Quietly increases flushing power. Combined with the internal air piston mechanism, repetitive counter water flow is generated, thus cleanses the toilet bowl and the pipe. Everyday dish soap can be used. 4. Floor Light - The light waves as the water ripples, and gently lights the floor surrounding the toilet.

5. Active Sterilizer - Kirei is quick off the mark in taking notice of the potential of Diamond LED. Diamond LED is a promising source of sterilamp for its high energy efficiency and safety for its liquid silver-free production. 6. Pop-up Alternative Flush Knob - While flushing is intended to be done by pressing the button on the remote control, In case of emergency such as electrical power failure, Kirei has a pop-out knob to manually flush. 7. Wireless Remote - Wall mounted or hand held.

Kirei toilet, in the market, intends its early adaptors to be luxury hotels, restaurants, or bars. This is to establish the exclusivity in its experience. However, in the long term, it is aimed to be benefited in hospitals, and eventually in general households.

SAVANNIUS Designed by

HIROTAKA MATSUI EMRE GIRGIN

Wind Energy for the “Mainstream” Savannius is a small scale vertical axis wind turbine integrated outdoor furniture which generates electric and provides for public use. The basic idea behind it is to create a social and functional space around the turbine, and thus increase its visibility.

SAVANNIUS

SAVANNIUS

green energy

Savannius wind turbine, is an outdoor gadget which is a combination of a bench and a small-scale wind turbine. Savannius provides an instant energy source in open spaces like parks and conventions. People can charge their laptops, phones and other electric devices by the outputs. The electricity generated by the turbine will be preserved into the internal battery, and will be supplied from the equipped electrical plug-ins and USB ports. Savannius creates a social and a functional space around itself, thus provides more opportunities for people to experience wind power first-hand. Ultimately, Savannius aims to diffuse awareness of small-scale wind turbines among the majorities, and thus establish a solution for the energy and ecology issue.

34 35

The greatest appeals of Savannius , as a product, are its portability and easy-handling traits. This suggests its easy accessibility and mobility. For instance, in occasions like festivals or outdoor concerts, numbers of units can be easily delivered, installed, and collected when done. All the wind turbine components are fastened with only one hand-screw. This means fast and easy (un)installation and maintenance. Savannius’ components are detachable and replaceable. It can be disassembled to the point where everything compactly fits inside a medium-sized transportation box. Inside the seating unit, there is a recycled polyethylene tank. The tank can be filled with water to serve additional stability. The vanes are made of recycled polyester sheet, and it catches the wind the same way a sail does. This material makes the vanes significantly lighter, lowercost, and easier to maintenance in comparison to a typical small-scale wind turbine. Additionally, Savannius features a shroud around the turbine vanes. The shroud, which is formed of 12 plates, directs the wind right onto the vanes, thus obtaining a more concentrated wind flow. This increases the efficiency of energy production by 5-10%. The shroud enhances the aesthetic appeal of the turbine by decreasing the visual disturbance caused by the distracting motion of the vanes. It also prevents birds from getting caught by accident.

SAVANNIUS

36 37

SAVANNIUS

Unlike the large-scale versions, small wind turbines are more adaptable for different groups of people and for different purposes, and not to mention, efficient in small wind flows. Savannius puts this fact into use and makes wind energy visible and available for more and more people.

HIROTAKA MATSUI LIFE x DESIGN

Here are some everyday products with a little bit of unique flavor to it. These will surely change the ordinary scenery in our lives into an exciting or maybe a pleasant one. How you enjoy is up to you.

FASNA

Zipper Earphones “Fasna” means “zipper” in Japanese, deriving from the word “fastener”. Literally, the zipper prevents the cables from tangling, snapping, getting knots and all other common issues. Fasna uses “familiar“ object in an “unfamiliar“ context to expand the capabilities of both elements. The set of earbuds snap together magnetically to further enhance the usability.

It almost takes no space, that you can mount on wall, or even ceiling however you want to, simple as a poster.

PANDA LOVES FLOWER

Raku Stoneware Vase The lip of the vase arch inwards to lose visible edges, which creates an usual form for a ceramic ware, yet emphasizes the visual softness and the warmth of the material. The stripes of matte white crackle glaze and the dark non-glazed surface almost look together as if a panda is taking a nap under a plum tree.
