A D V E RT I S E M E N T
A little bit of Umbria in Half Moon Bay
Save the plane ticket to your favorite hilltop town in Umbria; step into It’s Italia on Main Street in downtown Half Moon Bay…and you are in the Italian countryside.
IF YOU’RE FROM AN ITALIAN FAMILY, you know what it’s like to walk into your grandmother’s kitchen; the aromas of chopped garlic on the cutting board, or marinara steaming on the stove, or maybe fresh gnocchi being rolled out on the kitchen table…suddenly you are famished. Walking through the doors of It’s Italia, one is immediately hit with an unexplainable energy that invites you in, embraces your senses, and let s you know that you’re in for something special. The welcoming warmth of rustic solid stone walls, old wood, and sparkling glass accents immediately shuts down the stress of the day and opens the door to a comfortable, familiar feeling, like coming into grandmother’s kitchen. Grilled and slow roasted meats, like Wild Boar Osso Buco over Creamy Polenta, or locally caught seafood dishes like Fillo Crusted Salmon Fiorentino on spinach with a Champagne Cream Sauce and Chopped Prawns are commonly seen on the menu. Creative and traditional pastas, including a lasagna that hasn’t changed in almost 20 years, or the house rolled Gnocchi Tartufatta with White Truffle Oil will transport you to Umbria in the fall when the porcini mushrooms and tartufi (truffles) are seen at every corner vegetable stand. Salads like the famous Pumpkin Festival Salad with Roasted Red Apple Blossom Pumpkin, Baby greens, Gouda Cheese and Pumpkin Seeds with a Nutmeg Vinaigrette attract discerning foodies, vegetarians and vegans. Jacob Giusti, busser and food runner, and son of Farmer John Giusti delivers into the kitchen a case of their family’s local brussels sprouts, grown a couple miles
from the restaurant for the oven roasted Giusti Farms Brussles Sprouts with Pears and Pancetta. The Pizzas, all named after places on the coast, claim First Place every year in the Half Moon Bay Review’s, “Best of the Coastside” competition. Favorites include The Links (Pesto, onions, spinach and greek feta), Tunitas Creek (roasted chick-
en, hoisin sauce, cilantro, mozzarella), or the Half Moon Bay (artichoke hearts, Italian sausage, shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions). But if there is a reason to break your diet, the daily housemade foccacia, served to the table with Mediterranean extra virgin olive oil is it. Period. There are over 150 wines to choose from Italy, California, and other world regions. The bartenders are friendly and engaging, and one can enjoy a full meal at the bar during lunch, brunch, or dinner service. It is common to find a privately booked large party enjoying the warm atmosphere of It’s Italia’s Fireplace Courtyard, a rustic setting with stone fireplaces, terracotta tile floor, weathered wood tables and an olive tree. It’s Italia is open 7 days a week, for lunch (Monday thru Friday from 11;30),
weekend brunch (Saturday and Sunday from 11:00), and dinner nightly (from 4:30). View the menu and other offerings at www.itsitaliarestaurant.com. For reservations please call 650-726-4444.

Pastoral Paradise:
Harley Farms Like a scene from a storybook, the rural seaside town of Pescadero is a pastoral backdrop of green rolling hills, romantic old barns, and oversized tractors rambling down quiet country roads. In the midst of this idyllic setting is Harley Farms, a charming goat farm that draws visitors with its bucolic surroundings and uber-fresh cheeses. It takes its name from owner Dee Harley who breathed life into a dilapidated old farm and transformed it into an epicurean destination. In the early 1900s, the San Mateo coast bustled with dairy farms before they moved inland and became more industrial. Today, Harley Farms is the sole dairy farm in San Mateo County and a welcome throwback to a gentler era.
The farm sits three miles inland from the crashing waves of Pescadero Beach and exudes the kind of natural serenity that captivated Thoreau. In the morning, birdsong fills the air, misty fog lingers over distant forested hills, and a herd of Alpine goats plucks at green pastures. Yet as picture perfect as it is, owner Dee Harley has no intention of her land becoming a farm in theme only. “We’re not
here to make it look like a rustic farm. It is a rustic farm,” she exclaims. “That rusty old milk container is there for a reason, not just because we think it looks quaint.” Named Farmer of the Year by San Mateo County in 2007, Dee knew from a young age that fields were in her future. A native of Yorkshire, England, with a lingering accent to prove it, Dee found

her way to the California coast while traveling as a young woman. She found work at a local herb farm, met her future husband, and settled in Pescadero where the green landscape called to mind her childhood home. She landed on an abandoned 1910 dairy farm whose fallow land and derelict buildings sat unused for decades. One day, a dairy farmer from nearby Davenport dropped by, sized up the property, and persuaded Dee to buy goats to provide her with milk throughout the upcoming winter. Suddenly, Dee had six Alpine goats and no idea what to do with them. “Aside from goldfish, we never had animals growing up,” Dee says. She started milking the goats, supplying it to the Davenport dairy, and watched as the goats began to multiply. As milk production grew, Dee started making her own cheese and, before she knew it, she was operating a farmstead dairy. “In some ways, being far from help served me well,” Dee says of the origins of Harley Farms. “I had to learn to do it all myself.”
— DEE HARLEY
Today, Dee’s herd of roughly two hundred goats are descendants of those original six. Guarding the gentle creatures are a pair of wooly llamas that shepard the goats and protect them from mountain lions, bobcats and anything that might be tempted to drop in for a snack. Early each morning, goats clip-clop into a historic milking parlour where they produce the rich milk that bears the most wonderful chèvre. The cheese that visitors taste was likely made the day before from milk produced two days prior. Each cloudlike bite is clean and mild, supple and satisfying. What does Dee offer to those who are certain they don’t like goat cheese? “You need to taste ours,” she says. “Push through your bad experience. Trust me, you’ll be converted.” The sweet, ocean-perfumed air might be the secret ingredient. “It wouldn’t taste the same if we were in Sacramento,” says Dee referring to the salt-tinged breezes that find their way into the grass that goats graze upon. Dee shares a story of her chèvre being presented at a Slow Food show in Italy when a taster

IF YOU GO Harley Farms is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m.– 4 p.m. The farm is closed Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Two-hour farm tours are held each Friday at 1pm and Saturday at 11am. An additional adults-only tour— which allows for more in-depth discussion— is held every Sunday at 11am. Tours cost $25 and can be reserved online at harleyfarms.com. Reservations for upcoming seasonal farm dinners and luncheons are also available at harleyfarms.com. Note that spaces fill quickly and are reserved for guests 18-years and older. After a visit to Harley Farms, visitors can swing by Pescadero’s quaint, nearby Main Street to enjoy a slice of olallieberry pie from Duarte’s Tavern, wood-fired pizza fresh from a brick oven at Pescadero Country Store, and a destination-worthy artichoke bread served piping hot at Arcangeli Grocery.
immediately proclaimed that it must have been made near the ocean. “We really have created an essence of place,” says Dee. Everything that goes into the cheese—from grass to goat to milk—is produced on the farm. The process for making the cheese couldn’t be any simpler. Each goat produces roughly one gallon a day which flows through visible stainless steel pipes from the milking parlour into a vat in an adjacent dairy room. The milk is pasteurized, mixed with culture and rennet, and then hung in cheesecloth to separate the curds and whey. Afterwards, curds are sprinkled with salt, refrigerated, and hand-shaped into rounds before being adorned with fresh herbs and flowers plucked from the garden. In an age

when grocery item ingredients require double-checking, Harley Farms is the real deal. Dee explains that she’s never marketed the farm. After one visit, it’s apparent how enthusiastic word would spread. That’s in addition to the numerous awards and accolades the farm has earned for its farming practices, sustainability, and of course, delicious cheeses. As the property became more prominent, eager customers who wanted to buy cheese and see the goats would knock on Dee’s door and wake her from bed. So she transformed the old birthing stalls in the hay barn into a cheese shop and stocked it with additional products made on the farm, from milkbased apothecary products to a surprisingly resilient cheese-based paint.
“It’s fun to do new things,” says Dee. “It keeps it interesting.” Maybe more importantly, the diverse income streams allow Dee to keep the farm at its intimate size, something that she clearly cherishes. Outside the shop, she only has a handful of wholesale accounts. The majority of Harley Farms cheese is sold directly to customers at the farm or online. Harley Farms offers weekend tours where guests can experience the rhythm of the farm in person. Dee also encourages visitors to drop by anytime the farm is open. Guests can wander the main corral, delight in the edible flower gardens, and nibble on cheese while goats nibble at unwatched shirt sleeves. Visit in spring, when hundreds of tiny, wobbly-legged kids scamper about with little bleats that
will melt your heart. Pop into the cheese shop and sample a smorgasbord of fresh cheeses— herbed chèvre, fromage blanc, feta, and ricotta— as well as local honey, olive oils, jams, and a glass case full of decadent confections. Do not leave without trying the game-changing cheesecake. Grab a baguette and your favorite chèvre and head for the pastoral picnic area. Kiddos and pets are welcome. Harley Farms also presents a series of popular farm dinners where lucky guests dine in an enchanting lightstrung barn seated around a dramatic, handmade dining table. The farm hosts a handful of small weddings each year which transform the property into a candlelit wonderland. “It’s like one big art project,” says Dee. Still, throughout it all, she insists that the farm comes first. “If a pump breaks, that means a tour or a fancy dinner is going to be interrupted and will have to wait.” What does Dee hope visitors leave with? “With a sense of pleasure in their bones,” she says with a smile.

Pillar Point Harbor With docks of colorful fishing boats and charming waterfront eateries, the cozy seaside hamlet of Pillar Point Harbor offers a taste of New England along the California coast. Ever present ocean views and salt-tinged breezes lure all those who share a love of the sea, from commercial fishermen to world-renowned surfers. Explore the coastal haven by foot and discover sandy beaches, scenic trails, and a killer seafood shack or two.
PLAY Surrounded by the ocean, wetlands, and dramatic coastal bluffs, Pillar Point Harbor abounds with natural splendor. For a scenic primer that’s easy on the calves, hit the Pillar Point Marsh trail. In just under a mile, it passes through a garden of coastal flora, alongside the harbor’s gently swaying boats, and out to the wild shores of the Pacific. Start at the namesake salt marsh whose symphony of squawks, chirps and honks comes from hundreds of birds that dart about its waters. Follow the trail as it skirts the harbor’s sandy

shore, past a romantic old wooden pier, before arriving at the driftwood-strewn sands of Pillar Point Beach. About a half mile offshore from Pillar Point Beach is the world-famous Mavericks surf break and some of the biggest waves on the planet. In the winter, waves can swell to over 60 feet high and break with a crash that registers on the Richter Scale. When conditions are right, twenty-four of the world’s best surfers are invited each year to scale Maverick’s mountains of water, literally putting their lives on the line, in a one-day surf contest. The event draws a crowd but the threat of rogue waves limits spectators to watch
via big screens at designated viewing tents and local restaurants. Want to hop on a board without risking life and limb? Check out Maverick’s Paddleboard, a great resource for the standup water sport. It’s co-owned by local surf legend Jeff Clark — along with his wife Cassandra — who is credited with being the first to surf Mavericks and founded its first surf competition. Clark fell in love with paddleboarding as a way to be on the water when there were no waves to surf. Thanks to three breakwaters, Pillar Point is one of most protected and safest harbors in the nation. The shop offers classes for newbies and rentals for pros. Lucky paddlers
might spot bat rays and harmless leopard sharks scurrying underfoot. Another way to experience the harbor’s tranquil, wildlife-filled waters is via kayak. Half Moon Bay Kayak Co. has everything visitors need to glide peacefully across the harbor’s gentle waters amidst seabirds and harbor seals. For landlubbers, there are rental bikes to cruise the scenic Half Moon Bay Coastside Trail which hugs the shore along a paved route removed from traffic.
SHOP Whether you’re in town to ride a giant wave or simply grab a Mavericks hoodie, you’ll appreciate a stop at Maverick’s Surf Shop. Traveling surfers and curious visitors can pop into the shop and learn what it takes to surf Mavericks. The de facto headquarters for local surf culture has everything from posters to big wave boards custom made by Jeff Clark. “I’ve been fortunate to grow up next to the Everest of surfing and carve out an existence doing what I love,” says Clark.
The same could be said of Simmin and Sudi, two sisters who own the home boutique Nasturtium Art of Living. Tucked in a cozy seaside bungalow, the shop reflects their love of design and their coastsidehome with a curated mix of coastal-inspired home and garden decor. Say hi to Coco Chanel, their shaggy pup who’s usually seen lounging in the front garden welcoming visitors.
Arguably the most fun to be had at Pillar Point Harbor is scoring just-caught seafood directly from the fishing boats. Pillar Point is one of California’s last working fishing harbors and, each morning, Johnson Pier is a bustle of activity as returning boats are greeted with lines of eager customers. King salmon, halibut, petrale sole, and even live sea urchin are examples of typical seasonal catches. From November through May, Dungeness crab draws a crowd. Learn the catch of the day long before reaching the harbor by calling the harbormaster’s fishline (650-7268724) or scrolling daily reports using the handy Fishline app (available at fishlineapp.com). Even if you’re not prepared to plop crabs into steaming stovetop pots, it’s fun to stroll the docks and watch fishermen pluck wriggling, purple-hued crabs from their watery tanks. Don’t miss the interpretive signage that lines the pier and details the offshore marine sanctuary—one of the richest, most diverse ocean wildernesses in the world—and the harbor’s sustainable fishing practices. For example, fishermen only net male crabs of a certain size to ensure the population can reproduce and thrive.
close enough to the water to cast your own line. Nab a seat on the heated patio and tuck into a steaming bowl of clam chowder. Follow it with a lobster roll that would make a New Englander weep with heaps of plump lobster meat stuffed into a buttery brioche bun. Over at Princeton Seafood Company, it’s all about casual seafood faves like baskets of fish & chips and bowls of creamy clam chowder. Sit down for table service or grab an order from the window counter and take it to colorful, sidewalk picnic tables. There’s also a fish market with impressive displays of the day’s fresh catch. Comforts abound at Flavor, a dual-level restaurant with picture windows overlooking the harbor. Upscale comfort foods such as braised short ribs and a seafood pot pie make it a regular hang for locals. The downstairs lounge is a happy hour nirvana with cushy oversized sofas, flat screen TVs, and a menu full of food and drink specials. The sunny Southern Italian food at Mezzaluna has gained a loyal following thanks to pastas like the Linguini della Baia bursting with clams, calamari, and scallops. The warm, light-filled dining

room is anchored by a large stone hearth and overlooks the windblown cypress trees that line the harbor. A colorful Spanish flag hints at the wonderful atmosphere and food at Seville Tapas. The cafe and wine bar sports richly decorated interiors that transport guests to the southern coast of Spain. Outside, diners cozy up around courtyard fire pits and enjoy sizzling platters of Gambas al
Not everyone is keen to fillet a fiftypound salmon themselves. Thankfully, Pillar Point Harbor brims with delightful eateries that dish up local seafood and inspiring waterfront views. Follow the crowds to Sam’s Chowder House, a spirited seafood restaurant with a setting

Ajillo, or garlic shrimp, paired with lusty Riojas and spanish beers on tap. Before hitting the morning surf or trails, fuel up at The Press, a tidy barnchic cafe that features pressed sandwiches on freshly-baked bread. Arrive early for your pick of unique, housemade pastries like a Strawberry Brie Danish. Or grab a breakfast burrito at Old Princeton Landing. During the last Mavericks competition, they sold sixty-five of them in less than an hour. Don’t be fooled by its casual exterior. The spic-and-span diner cranks out locally sourced produce and impeccable seafood that was likely swimming in the ocean earlier that day. At their adjacent tavern, locals clink pints of beer and swap stories from that day’s surf.
DRINK During Prohibition, Pillar Point teemed with rum runners and bootleggers who took advantage of its isolated waterfront setting. Ships would dump their illegal cargo into the sea and locals looking to make quick buck would snag the barrels and drive them up to San Francisco

speakeasies. Today, the smugglers have been replaced by craft brewers, artisanal distillers, and small-batch vintners. Just try and pass up a cold one on the large harbor-facing deck at Half Moon Bay Brewing. The pup-friendly gathering spot serves an amazing array of craft beers, from a clean-drinking German style Kölsch to the burly Tunnel Vision IPA. Order a sampler and pair it with beer-friendly bites like a jumbo pretzel or beer-battered fish & chips. Marking
the entrance is a two-ton anchor salvaged from a sailing ship that broke apart on reefs off Pillar Point in 1876. Half Moon Bay Distillery is the first legal distillery on the San Mateo Coast. Inspired by the brandies of her native Austria, owner Ulli and her husband Cesar imported a gleaming distiller from Germany and began crafting refined spirits unique to the central coast. Their Purissima Vodka is named for the historic ghost town of Purissima whose overgrown cemetery can still be explored if you can find it. Their velvety Harvard Avenue gin, rich with citrus and spice, will make an instant convert of anyone weary of the spirit’s traditional bite. Sample both while learning the art of distilling at their gorgeous new tasting room. A few doors down, wine lovers can sip the elegant, food-friendly varietals of Trojak Knier Winery. Started by two locals who discovered a passion and talent for winemaking, the intimate winery sources grapes from Napa and Sonoma and crushes them amidst the crab nets and fish floats of Pillar Point’s shipyards. Everything is done by hand right down
to the bottle labels. Drop by weekends and hope they haven’t sold the last of their delicious Pinot Noir.
STAY Quiet sunrises and golden sunsets are strong motivators for staying the night. A number of cozy inns and beachfront hotels offer delightful ways for guests to extend their visit. Located smack dab in the middle of Pillar Point, Oceano Hotel & Spa is just steps from the harbor’s buzz of shops and eateries. Plush beds, fireplaces, and deep soaking tubs make it a cozy respite after an activity filled day. A 5,000 square-foot day spa doesn’t hurt either. A new reception center and ceremony garden make it an enviable wedding venue. The Inn at Mavericks feels like a ship at sea with nothing but blue water visible from guest room windows. Hidden on a secluded side street, the boutique inn is perched directly on the harbor shore. Sit out on your oversized deck and enjoy the occasional visit from a raspy harbor seal.
At night, be lulled to sleep by the gentle ripple of waves. A stay at the Beach House Half Moon Bay is like enjoying your own weekend beach cottage. With plush living spaces and convenient kitchenettes, fully-equipped suites are situated on the sandy dunes that front a quiet corner of the harbor. End the day on a private balcony and watch the sun disappear behind a silhouette of Pillar Point. In the morning, wake to a giddy spread of fresh-baked pastries, fruit, and local organic coffee. Tucked away on a quiet street across the harbor, Harbor View Inn is a comfortable property with spacious guest rooms that sport views of the Pacific. Fuel up with a complimentary breakfast before exploring the natural splendor and nautical charm of Pillar Point Harbor. Although just 25 minutes from the jet-fueled din of SFO, Pillar Point Harbor feels worlds away. It’s a special destination along the California coast where visitors can enjoy a thriving seaside culture, engage with breathtaking natural surroundings, and reap the tasty rewards of a bustling fishing harbor.

RAILS TO TRAILS
THE
Devil’s Slide Trail Edge-of-the-world views, gardens of coastal flowers, and aquamarine waters teeming with sea life exemplify the immense beauty found at Devil’s Slide Trail. The cliffside promenade is one of California’s most glorious pathways and certainly its most unique. The coastal trail was once a busy highway and, as its diabolical name implies, it wasn’t always so beloved. For nearly a century, the treacherous thoroughfare along the sheer cliffs of San Pedro Mountain confounded motorists, railroads, and engineers. Frequent landslides would batter the road forcing it closed for up to months at a time. In 2013, two state-of-the-art tunnels were built to bypass Devil’s Slide and, soon after, the infamous stretch of road was converted into a spectacular public trail. Today, families, nature lovers, cyclists, and equestrians can explore dazzling coastal cliffs along the paved 1.3 mile trail and experience what car-bound motorists never could. In just two years, Devil’s Slide trail has become the most popular destination in the San Mateo County Parks system drawing visitors with its grand-scale splendor.

OCEAN SHORE RAILROAD Before it played host to Highway One, Devil’s Slide was the site of an ill-fated railway. With dreams of a leisure train that would shuttle daytrippers down the coast, the Ocean Shore Railway Company drew up plans for 73 miles of tracks between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, construction began in fall of 1905, less than a year before the Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake sent tracks along Devil’s Slide plunging into the ocean. The railway eventually opened in 1908 but its northern segment never made it past Half Moon Bay and the beleaguered railroad ultimately called it quits in 1920. Today, the tracks are long gone but visitors to Devil’s Slide trail can spot the railroad bed
that cuts through the rough, hilly terrain along San Pedro Point.
WORLD’S LONGEST CUL-DE-SAC While frustrations ran high for investors of the Ocean Shore Railway, it paled to that of future commuters. State Route 1—later renamed Highway One—first passed through Devil’s Slide in 1937 and, just three years later, was buried under fallen rocks. It was an omen of things to come. At least once a decade afterward, landslides and erosion would plague the road and vex local residents. In 1995, a landslide closed the road for six months causing coastside residents to quip that they lived in the world’s longest cul-desac. Even on good days, traffic along the
accident-prone route would slow to a crawl as motorists carefully navigated hair-raising turns that teetered precipitously over sheer cliffs. CalTrans attempted every possible engineering feat to stabilize the hillside but nature always prevailed. Concerned with plans to construct a six-lane bypass over nearby Montara Mountain, community members countered by proposing a tunnel through San Pedro Mountain. During the summer of 1996, local car bumpers sported yellow “Think Tunnel” stickers and the measure went on to win in—what else?—a landslide. Construction began in 2005 and two tunnels—one northbound, the other southbound—were completed in the spring of 2013. Stretching 4,149 feet in length, the northbound underpass is the second longest tunnel in California, falling shy of Wawona Tunnel in Yosemite.
Slide? Sedimentary rock. The actual slide area is comprised of what was once the ocean floor, with visible layers of mud and sand, uplifted over millennia by shifting tectonic plates. Due to its mudstone content, sedimentary rock is extremely weak and prone to crumble. It’s this fragile composite that earned Devil’s Slide its notorious moniker.
A QUICK GEOLOGY LESSON What is the source of the instability— and ensuring headaches — at Devil’s

Unlike visitors who view Devil’s Slide Trail as a peaceful respite, geologists consider it a dynamic site of violent upheaval. The trail traverses two distinct, towering rock formations. Visitors can observe how the striated sedimentary rock at the north end contrasts with the solid granitic rock to the south. Identical to rock found at Lake Tahoe and Yosemite Valley, this granite was ripped from the Sierras and thrust toward the coast by forces deep within the earth. Devil’s Slide Trail lends a rare opportunity to explore sheer coastal cliffs in a safe environment and experience the earth’s continuously evolving geology. Thanks to lush native flora, strolling between these spectacular outcrops is like walking through a hanging garden. Granite slopes are adorned with a variety of plant life such as fragrant California sagebrush, the scarlet blooms of Indian Paintbrush, and vibrant Seaside Daisies.
MARINE LAND Devil’s Slide Trail provides an incredible vantage point for spotting marine
56

birds and mammals. Three observation platforms outfitted with benches and viewfinders allow visitors to catch sight of ocean life such as bottlenose dolphins frolicking just offshore. Gray whales are often seen hugging the coast in January, on their southward migration toward birthing grounds in Baja, and in spring as they return north alongside their calves. Bring binoculars to spot humpback whales which swim further from shore and are primarily visible from April through October. The area’s frigid waters also proliferate with pinnipeds such as
California sea lions and harbor seals that haul out on nearby San Pedro Rock.
CURE FOR THE COMMON MURRE In addition to seabirds like pelicans and cormorants, visitors might also spot sleek peregrine falcons darting in and out the crevices that pock granite cliffs. And don’t be surprised if someone excitedly points out a penguin. With a black bowling pin-shaped body and white oval belly, the common murre is easily mistaken for its Antarctic doppelgänger. True seabirds
that live their entire lives at sea, murres maintain a nesting colony just offshore at Devil’s Slide Rock. In the 1980s, the murre colony here was completely wiped out by gill nets and a devastating oil spill. Using decoys and sound recordings, biologists lured them back and helped repopulate their spring and summer home at Devil’s Slide.
PATROLLING THE WATERS Today, visitors study the waters for plumes of migrating whales. Yet during
World War II, offshore waters were scanned for enemy vessels. Devil’s Slide was the site of numerous Army observation stations, including one emplacement perched on a granite hill that is visible from the trail. Before the advent of radar, soldiers would employ triangulation, a technique of pinpointing enemy warcraft based on location reports from three observation posts. The abandoned bunkers are quiet reminders of an early coastal defense network that included ocean mines and underwater nets waiting to snare Japanese subs.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Devil’s Slide Trail is open every day of the year, 24 hours a day. Dogs on leashes are welcome and pet waste disposal is available. There are two small parking lots at each end of the trail that are equipped with restrooms and drinking fountains. Lots open daily at 8:00 a.m. and close at various times depending upon the season. SamTrans operates a daily bus (#17) to the Devil’s Slide Trail and, on weekends, a dedicated shuttle picks up from Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica. Trail ambassadors stroll the path making themselves available to answer questions and relay insightful stories. There’s also a series of interpretive panels that detail the natural and cultural history of the surrounding coast. Devil’s Slide experiences a variety of weather, sometimes within moments of each other, so remember to pack that fleece. Craving a post-hike nibble? Less than three miles south, La Costanera dishes up contemporary Peruvian plates in a striking building set on sweeping Montara Beach. Nab a seat in the glass-enclosed dining room or heated, waterfront patio and enjoy creative cebiches and a Pisco Sour while watching the sun dip into the Pacific.

Our setting provides the antithesis of a corporate environment where participants feel free to take off the armor. — JANE BATTEY, MIRAMAR FARMS
Farm, Fish & Flowers
With a patchwork of dreamy ranch and farm lands, the Half Moon Bay Coastside is a hub of vibrant food and horticulture. Offering a rare peek inside this dynamic agricultural community, the annual Farm + Fish + Flowers event guides participants through local farms, nurseries, and ranches that are not usually open to the public. Formerly known as Tour des Fleurs, the twenty-five year old event held each July offers a wonderful opportunity for home gardeners, foodies, nature lovers, and anyone curious about how small farms inform local communities. In recent years, prominent writers and chefs like Michael Pollan and Alice

Waters have encouraged us to explore the origins of our food. Yet books and films could never replace the experience of visiting a working farm in real life. Like a Hollywood backlot tour for fans of food and agriculture, farm outings relay the daily struggles, clever innovations, and family histories that could enliven a fiery
novel. Farm + Fish + Flowers captures these stories along with the breathtaking scenery that make the Half Moon Bay Coastside such a compelling ecotourism destination. One participating site that exemplifies the rich experiences of local family farms is Oku Nursery. Family-run since
its founding in 1902, Oku’s notable history includes helping found the San Francisco Flower Market in 1956 and being the first to ship cut flowers east of the Rocky Mountains when New Orleans needed blooms for All Saints Day. Today, Oku continues that innovative tradition by growing flowers and lettuces via hydroponics, or without soil. In greenhouses hand-built by the Oku family, fragrant lilies, vivid gerbera daisies, and lustrous ranunculus sprout from ground coconut husk which, unlike soil, is not subject to volatility. Nearby, state-of-the-art structures hold football fields of leafy lettuce heads resting over pools of nutrient-enriched water. When the nursery was established, it served a local market before shipping
advancements sent everything back East. Today, thanks to a strong local food movement, Oku and other regional farmers have come full circle selling their crops to local restaurants and farmers’ markets. Like Oku, members of the local ag community are thinking of creative new ways to diversify and sustain their farms. Educational nonprofit The HEAL Project transformed a gorgeous plot of farmland into an outdoor classroom for local school children. With the goal of imparting healthy eating habits and a respect for sustainable agriculture, the San Mateo County School Farm welcomes elementary and high school students to construct herb gardens, harvest produce, and prepare meals in an outdoor kitchen. There’s even a bicycle-powered blender for fresh berry smoothies. “You wouldn’t believe how creative our kids are,” says Naomi Stern, the farm educator who engages young participants in Iron Chef style competitions. The farm’s berries appear each Saturday at the Coastside Farmers’ Market at a booth staffed by youth volunteers. Drop by and say hi, or swing by the farm on a Friday when The Heal Project invites the public to help harvest for the next morning’s market. Over at Miramar Farms, a dramatically scenic farm is used to foster wellness and mindfulness in adults. Mark and Jane Battey fled the confines of corporate life to reconnect with their natural
surroundings and share their discoveries with others. Senior staff from major firms throughout the Bay Area come to team build, develop leadership practices, and, as the driving instructions to the farm encourage, “take a deep breath.” “Our setting provides the antithesis of a corporate environment where participants feel free to take off the armor,” says Jane who confesses to not being the picture of Zen back in her corporate days. As a bonus, Miramar Farms sits immediately adjacent to Figone Nursery, another Farm + Fish + Flowers participant, whose vibrant dahlia fields light up its surroundings. To lend a sense of the region’s agricultural prominence, Farm + Fish + Flowers offers a behind the scenes look at Bay City Flower Company, one of the largest hydrangea producers in the nation. Just up the road, Rocket Farms grows nearly every rose and holiday poinsettia sold at everyday, big name stores. Participants tour hangar-sized greenhouses of budding roses and otherworldly Venus fly traps, peppering staff with questions like how to spur stubborn basil plants or coaxing roses to bloom a second time. The Coastside is home to innovative farmers like Ouroboros Farms who employ future-looking practices like aquaponics. Then there are those like Markegard Grass Fed who look to the past. HOW TO PARTICIPATE The annual Farm + Fish + Flowers event is held on the last Saturday in July. Tickets are available beginning May 1st and sell out soon afterwards. Participants can choose from six itineraries that include three tour destinations. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber website at hmbchamber.com or call (650) 726-8380.

hills, frolicsome pigs sloshing in cooling mud, and Freedom Ranger chickens pecking at bugs in open fields, a visit here is like stepping back to a pre-industrial time. The sweeping grassland ranch feels like the cinematic setting for some classic western and is tended by the Markegards, a handsome family usually found dressed in dusty jeans and cowboy hats. Erik Markegard is a sixth generation cattle rancher who has stewarded this land for 30 years. Out in the fields, his wife Doniga and 8-year-old daughter Quill herd cattle with the sing-songy call of “ah-vai.” Visitors can find Markegard’s grass-fed and pastured meats at local eateries such as Old Princeton Landing as well as online at markegardfamily.com. With an appreciation of the area’s rich legacy and tradition, Farm + Fish + Flowers also highlights historical sites that gave rise to the region’s agriculture boom. Participants step inside the 1850s James Johnston House, an iconic New England saltbox home that sits prominently atop a countryside hill. Attendees can also join a historian-led walking tour of downtown structures that date back to Spanishtown, the original name given to Half Moon Bay and the first city to be founded in San Mateo County.
Farm + Fish + Flowers participants are also invited to explore the docks at PIllar Point Harbor, home to one of the largest fishing fleets in Northern California. Dungeness crab, king salmon, and sand dabs are just some of the seafood that visitors can purchase directly from boats returning from long nights at sea. Other notable stops include the sustainable farming practices of Ananda Valley Farm, native drought-resistant plants at Yerba Buena Nursery, adorable goats and heavenly cheeses at Harley Farms, and traditional local crops such as Brussels sprouts and artichokes at Giusti Farms. One of the easiest ways for visitors to experience the Coastside’s year-round bounty is via the weekly Coastside Farmers’ Market. Founder Erin Tormey leads Farm + Fish + Flower participants through vibrant displays of local produce while engaging with farmers and enjoying the literal fruits of their labor. “It’s made my life very rich,” Tormey says of her role managing the farmers’ market and owning her own farm. “Every day I gaze upon something beautiful and soul nourishing. I’m sure there are people who have two commas in their paycheck that couldn’t say the same thing.”

A Brief History of the Coastside
The Coastside comfortably takes its place between the dramatic, green coastal mountain range to the east, and the powerful bluegreen Pacific to the west. Because it is somewhat isolated from its major metropolitan neighbors, the area has not changed as much as it might have over the years.
1906 San Francisco Earthquake leaves a somewhat twisted historic Zaballa House
Half Moon Bay’s Busy Main Street in 1920s
Dating back to the 1840s, the community that is today called Half Moon Bay is the oldest community in San Mateo County. Cabrillo Highway (California Rt. 1) along the coast, and San Mateo Road (Highway 92) over the mountains follow closely the earliest trails of the original Costanoan Indians, who lived here for thousands of years. The Coastside was the first place on the peninsula visited by Spanish military explorer Gaspar de Portola, with his accompanying missionary, Father Juan Crespi in 1769. The earliest settlers of the Coastside were the recipients of Mexican land grants—handed out to prominent and worthy military and civil leaders by the government. Five of those land grants make up what is referred to as the Coastside today. As the early commercial developments were primarily established by Mexican pioneers, and others from Spanish-speaking cultures, the village was dubbed “Spanishtown” by its Anglo visitors and settlers. The place was eventually renamed “Half Moon Bay,” which was the name earlier given to the beautiful, crescent shaped harbor near today’s El Granada. In the later 1800’s and on into the 1900’s, the area’s character was altered by the arrival of the Americans, Italians, Portuguese, Pacific Islanders, Chinese, and a host of cultures. Half Moon Bay became a thriving community. Traces of that past remain very visible in the many historic buildings on downtown’s Main, Purissima, Johnston Streets, and others (See “The Treasures of Half Moon Bay,” A small souvenir guide book found in many stores and shops around town). Stage coaches ran their routes from San Mateo to Half Moon Bay, and then on south to the little towns of Purissima, Lobitos, San Gregorio and Pescadero. North of town were the wharves near Miramar (known then as Amesport Landing) and at Pillar Point—for ocean shipping back and forth from San Francisco. The 20th century brought more great changes—especially the construction of the Ocean Shore Railroad. From 1907 through 1920 the railroad hugged the shoreline from San Francisco to Tunitas Glen—just south of town. Passengers marveled at the stretches of sandy beaches, perfect for picnics, horseback riding and exploring. The towns of Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada and other neighborhoods were laid out by developers anticipating the great influx of San Franciscans. Due to financial problems, the advent of the horseless carriage, and less than expected markets, the railroad failed. Although growth was slowed, the railroad did leave the subdivisions that were the seeds of modern suburban growth. The Coastside was certainly a lively place during Prohibition. Its hidden ocean coves, thick fog for cover, and isolated canyons, the setting was ideal for smuggling alcohol from Canada, and very local moonshiners. Speakeasies and profitable traffic were hallmarks of the Coastside for those years. From the 1920s to the present, growth has been slow and steady. Present day visitors of the Coastside will see original farms dating back to the 1800s. There are miles of unchanged, white and sandy beaches, redwood forests, beautiful state parks, and fields of wild and cultivated flowers—hiking and biking trails along ocean bluffs and among the mountains continue to make the coastside a joy for modern day explorers. Special thanks to The Half Moon Bay History Association. / HalfMoonBayHistory.org The Mission of the HMBHA is to Educate, Celebrate and Preserve the History of the Coastside.
