Catherine Quinlan, Dean of the USC Libraries

arlier this year, we completed E

The Essential Library, our strategic plan for the future of libraries at the University of Southern California. The Essential Library stands among the many accomplishments that have made 2008 such a rewarding year.

Collaboration is a persistent theme throughout The Essential Library, and the drawings you see here are the result of our partnership with the USC School of Architecture. In an exercise in bringing imagined spaces to life, first-year students have taken as inspiration excerpts from books included in Biblioclasm, our exhibition of banned literary works. The drawings are vivid reminders of the library’s role in the discovery, creation, and preservation of knowledge. I hope they inspire you to seek discoveries among the USC Libraries’ collections and to explore new ways of collaborating with us in the coming year.
