Cambridge War Memorial Recreation Center Cambridge, Massachusetts 2008 2009 Honor Award National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association Flowing waves of color for this aquatic center, enhanced by flecks of colored glass and mother of pearl, lead from the pool area to the entrances and are interrupted in key wayfinding moments by floating orange accents of clear glass and colored epoxy.

Hanover High School Hanover, Massachusetts 2011 A stylized river of colored terrazzo runs through this high school’s main floor, accentuating its diagonal circulation plan. It draws users into the heart of the building, the student commons, while referencing the importance of rivers and wetlands to the town and its history. Shades of blue interplay with wetland greens and earthy “river rocks. A grand, central stair of terrazzo steps is composed of watery blues that flow into the river pattern.

Cambridge Rindge & Latin School Cambridge, Massachusetts 2010 The stone grills on the exterior of this 1930s school building were used as the reference for the pattern of the new terrazzo floor inside the building. A less conventional color palette was introduced to play off of the traditional shapes, stones and larger aggregate sizes. Where the 1930s building meets a 1970s addition, the design morphs into an organic flow that lends itself better to the less-structured corridors in the newer building.

Francis T. Bresnahan School Newburyport, Massachusetts 2014 This seafaring town’s history and connection to the ocean is recalled in the terrazzo floor where ships sail on ocean waves, birds fly in cumulus skies and and fish and whales swim beneath the sea. A palette of blue glass, green glass and mother-of-pearl unify four colors, including the white of the background, while a yellow epoxy with amber and yellow glass, as well as silver-coated mirror pieces, sparkle in the fish and waving flags.

Ideas/Options Palm Beach Day Academy Terrazzo is universally used in the Florida climate. The material, in its practicality and dynamism, lends itself well to the public/common areas at Palm Beach Day Academy. It offers limitless opportunity for elegant designs, both bold and subtle, that could inspire the school’s students, motivate donors and unite the campus buildings.
