concept statement

In 20 years time, how people work and the spaces they work in will evolve as new generations join the workforce. As agile working becomes the new norm, with a focus on wellness, the office landscape must form to these new working patterns. To follow the changing landscape, our Office of 2040 will focus on reinventing space, comfort, and renewal. The office environment will incorporate flexible coworking spaces that allows people to customize and personalize the way that they work. In order to achieve this, our space will provide a variety of postures and comfortable furniture arrangements to promote wellbeing and a home-like environment. A wellness center located off the main entry of the building provides an opportunity for building tenants to rejuvenate and recharge in order to reduce the stress and pressure of their workload. The Office of 2040 will become a home so that the home can become a sanctuary.

CONCEPT

The Greater Phoenix Digestive Health Center includes elements that nurture the innate human-nature connection through biophilic design. Living in the desert imparts a deep appreciation for the value of water and at the same time, the importance of water in the human body for digestive health. This clinic wants to showcase how to use water wisely in a healthcare setting that sits in the arid desert of Arizona by using low water use and desert adapted plants, recycling water for indoor landscaping and through artificial water features to produce effects of soothing and calmness in a healing environment. CONCEPT

Many of today’s trends are inspired by the generations and trends

that came before, almost a type of revival movement, yet we have made the trends modern and unique. There is also a focus on social justice and acceptance of individuality. This inspired me to take a look back at Fauvism from the Impressionist period of fine art. During its short duration, Fauvism was considered over the top, and literally means “wild beast”. Designing this space in this extravagant and eye-catching Fauvist

Fauve FRESH&

way would be able to satisfy the needs of the client and the experience for their demographic.

I was particularly inspired by a painting by Matisse, shown

below. In Matisse’s 1905 painting Open Window, Collioure we see a window looking out to a bay with boats, which inspired my concept of an abstracted space that is a colorful and lively coral reef underwater. The unexpected and arbitrary colors used in Matisse’s painting helped me develop a unique and fresh color scheme for a boutique hotel’s restaurant/bar. With a variety of Sherwin Williams paint colors, fabric textures and design elements, I can create a one-of-a-kind experience that is invigorating and refreshing.

Huda Beauty OBJECTIVE

Create a retail space for the currently online-exclusive cosmetics brand, Huda Beauty. Beyond designing a space that reflects the brand's identity and philosophy, the space must include an experiential element to supplement the traditional retail experience.

DESIGN PROBLEM Traditional cosmetic stores are inconvenient, disorganized and often very overwhelming. They are also rarely gender-neutral and inclusive.

DESIGN SOLUTION

Giving the customers options for how they would like to shop was priority in creating a retail space that is inclusive and convenient. Organizing makeup by product and then in mixed-categories gives the customers two options for how they can browse through products. Providing different options for testing Huda Beauty makeup can be done at a beauty bar in a more social setting, or in a private testing booth, done via virtual technology, to avoid the inconvenience of putting makeup on the face.

through beauty EMPOWERING - HUDA KATTAN

CONCEPT STATEMENT Huda Beauty is a cosmetic retail space that goes against the grain of traditional makeup retailers, which are often inconvenient, by providing a retail environment that is universal and inclusive to all makeup users. Through the use of natural woods, stones and earth tones, the design can appeal to all people in search of a beauty brand. Along with merchandise, two unique makeup testing experiences will be available in the space, so that the customer can co-create the value of their experience and leave feeling confident and empowered by their own expression of beauty.

SERENBE

Serenbe is a wellness community located in the city limits of Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia, with a focus on connectedness to nature.

THE HAVERMANS

hygge

southern

Deb and Brent Haverman and their two young sons are a very active family moving to Serenbe. They enjoy hiking and being outside biking, hiking, and camping. They also love to entertain and would love for ample space to have friends and family over. One of their sons has autism, so the clients requested an open floor plan to help make an inclusive and simple space.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Hygge is a Danish concept that is loosely translated as a sense of comfort, togetherness and well-being. The Haverman’s emphasis on family combined with Serenbe’s values of nature, passion, community and creativity, a unique Southern twist on hygge will come alive in this home. Repetition of horizontal, linear silhouettes in furnishings and the interior architecture will evoke contentment in the person experiencing the space. Soothing blues and complimentary muted orange hues, warm wood tones, and cozy textures will allow the Haverman’s home to be a harmonious and enjoyable space to spend time with friends and family, enjoying the most important things in life.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

This work-live loft will be an inspiring and passionate space that promotes comfortable, mindful living. This will be best achieved through meaningful layering of physical materials in the space, as well as through thoughtful space planning, considering the public, semi-private and private parts of life. Layering different elements such as cozy textures, natural materials and woods, fun patterns, and a rich color scheme composed of jewel tones and warm neutrals will provide a complex and introspective atmosphere. The resulting environment will be one that is able to fill myself and my guests with candid emotion and inspiration. A space with layers of life itself, fearless of emotion and brimming with passion, that begs to be lived in.
