Margrethe Odgaard X Silkeborg Uldspinderi The highly successful Danish textile company Silkeborg Uldspinderi has launched a collaboration with Margrethe Odgaard. The Danish designer is an expert in designing textiles and colourways, and working from a playful perspective she has created the colourful and beautiful throw ‘Franja’. ‘Franja’ is created in the colours ‘Butter Peach’ and ‘Burgundy Blue’. Margrethe Odgaard’s design is named after the Spanish word for stripe or edge, as reflected in the throw’s edge and multi-coloured fringe. ‘I wanted to create a playful and cheerful element for the home, whether you wrap it around your shoulders or drape it on your sofa,’ Margrethe Odgaard says about her design collaboration with Silkeborg Uldspinderi. For Silkeborg Uldspinderi, the collaboration has been an amazing journey: ‘The fact that such a simple design can appear so unique underscores the importance of engaging in the right design collaborations, and with Margrethe, we have certainly succeeded in that,’ says Kasper Boje, Brand Director of Silkeborg Uldspinderi.

A far cry from tradition In their beautiful colours, ‘Butter Peach’ and ‘Burgundy Blue’, the ‘Franja’ throws add a lovely touch to the many cosy corners in your home. Margrethe played with the design to turn a traditional look into an unexpected expression. In ‘Franja’, the fringe has been turned 90 degrees, so it appears on the long sides of the throw rather than at the bottom and top: ‘I used the fringe to underscore the playful quality of the design; the striking, coloured fringe is highlighted because it appears on the long sides, and that adds a very alternative quality to the thrown in comparison to a traditional one,’ says Margrethe Odgaard. Living with colours Colours are a great way to renew your home interior by quick, simple means. Bold, vivid colours underscore your personal taste and bring life and energy to your interior design. The two colourways, ‘Burgundy Blue’ and ‘Butter Peach’, compliment each other beautifully but work equally well on their own. ‘Colours can affect our mood in many different ways, and Margrethe Odgaard has brought that awareness into our design collaboration in the most exceptional way,’ says Kasper Boje, Brand Director of Silkeborg Uldspinderi.

Karin Carlander

I see the loom as my friend and as an inexhaustible source of inspiration - Karin Carlander

Karin Carlander (b. 1959) Karin Carlander qualified as a textile designer and weaver from The School of Arts and Crafts (later The Danish Design School) in 1987. During her time of study, she went on an exchange trip to Japan, where she gained a lifelong interest in and respect for Japanese design and craftsmanship, which can still be seen in her work today. In her early years, Carlander travelled in France, where she learnt to weave rugs under the tutelage of world-renowned French weaver Jacqueline de la Baume Dürrbach. Karin Carlander is a weaver with a capital W. It is her job, lifestyle and mission to uphold the craft, and she finds it deeply meaningful to produce utility textiles. Since 1988, Carlander has worked from her own studio in the former knife factory in Rådvad north of Copenhagen. In 2013 she started her own textile brand, Textile No.

Cumulus & Pine Collection Carlander has brought the same working process that she uses with her own designs, in which all samples are produced by hand, after which they are transferred to mechanical weaving. She always starts working in black and white, as this enables her to focus on the pattern. Only once the pattern is finalised does Carlander add colour to the textile. Karin Carlander has, as she so often does in her designs, weaved a path to arrive at the pattern in the two designs –Cumulus and Pine – for Silkeborg Uldspinderi. Carlander works on the loom’s own terms and uses the analogue loom’s logic. The result is a beautiful design with an asymmetric pattern and a structure that highlights the alpaca’s soft, warm structure and quality.
