His intimate portraits convey the nerves, the tension, the pain, and the elation with emotional depth and the clarity of a longtime insider. With contributions from celebrated Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Fred Biletnikoff, as well as text from renowned sportswriter Steve Cassady and sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, Field of Play highlights the irresistible force of football and celebrates its enduring presence.

FROM THE FLOATING WORLD TO THE MODERN WORLD
BY RHIANNON PAGET
A stunning introduction to the history of Japanese printmaking, with highlights from the de Young museum's vast collection
In 1868, Japan underwent a dramatic transformation following the overthrow of the shogun by supporters of Emperor Meiji, marking the end of feudal military rule and ushering in a new era of government that promoted modernizing the country and interacting with other nations. Japanese print culture, which had flourished for more than a century with the production of color woodcuts (the so–called ukiyo–e, or “floating world” images), also changed course during the Meiji era (1868–1912), as societal changes and the once–isolationist country’s new global engagement provided a wealth of new subjects for artists to capture. Featuring selections from the renowned Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts’ permanent collection, Japanese Prints in Transition: From the Floating World to the Modern World documents the shift from delicately colored ukiyo–e depictions of actors, courtesans, and scenic views to brightly colored images of Western architecture, modern military warfare, technology (railroad trains, steam–powered ships, telegraph lines), and Victorian fashions and customs.
Rhiannon Paget is the curator of Asian art at the John & Mabel Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. STRONG PRESENCE: The deYoung is a San Francisco institution. Together with its sister museum, the Legion of Honor, they receive 1.5 million visitors annually. Online, the museum has more than 12,000 followers on Twitter and more than 38,000 Instagram followers.
UNIQUE EXHIBITION: The exhibition presents a rare opportunity to see Japanese prints. Since their colors fade when exposed to light for prolonged periods of time, the prints are seldom on view, and some have not been exhibited in this century.
GIFT APPEAL: A giftable option for lovers of art, world history, and Japanese culture.
MULTIPLE AUDIENCES: Slated to find favor and promotion within the FAMSF and Asian Art Museum communities, along with the Japan Society of Northern California.

SOUL OF BLACK FOLKS
DIASPORA
A collection of breathtaking portraits by notable Ghanaian painter and visual artist Amoako Boafo
Published to accompany Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo’s premier museum solo exhibition, copresented by the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Amoako Boafo: Soul of Black Folks is a timely exploration into the varying strategies that Boafo employs within his practice to capture the essence of the Black figure. Boafo creates paintings that center Black subjectivity, Black joy, and the Black gaze. Anchored by calculated brushwork combined with skillfully executed finger–painted strokes, his mark–making generates a rich visual dichotomy that yields both inward and outward–looking explorations of Boafo’s subjects and the act of painting Black figures themselves. As much as Boafo’s works are about the viewer, these beautifully constructed paintings are buoys. Boafo’s ability to capture the spirit of the individuals in his works and engage viewers has made him one of the most influential artistic voices of his generation. The work’s power lies in its communication of a shared experience beyond the Black diaspora and anyone that feels they are on the margins of society.
Larry Ossei–Mensah is a Ghanaian–American independent curator and cultural critic who has documented contemporary art happenings for various publications, including NeueJournal, Uptown, and Whitewall Magazine. Recently, Ossei–Mensah was named the 2017 Critic–in–Residence at ART OMI in addition to serving as cochair on Russell Simmons’s RUSH Artist Advisory Board and as a member of MoMA’s Friends of Education. The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), a Smithsonian affiliate, is a contemporary art museum that celebrates Black cultures, ignites challenging conversations, and inspires learning through the global lens of the African Diaspora. THREAD FOR A WEB BEGUN
DIASPORA
The first major career survey of work by renowned fiber and textile artist Billie Zangewa
Published to accompany the exhibition presented by the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco, Billie Zangewa: Thread for a Web Begun explores Zangewa’s creation of literal and figurative tapestries of the contemporary intersectional identities of Black women. Through her hand–sewn silk collages, which primarily depict Black women in the domestic sphere, Zangewa reclaims a medium that was once relegated as “women’s work” and delves into the familiarity, beauty, and sociopolitical drivers of the seemingly mundane. Through the method of their making and their narrative content, Zangewa’s silk paintings illustrate gendered labor in an ideological context, where the domestic sphere becomes a pretext for a deeper understanding of the construction of identity, questions around gender stereotypes, and racial prejudice. This volume showcases the past 15 years of Zangewa’s work as well as new pieces made for this exhibition, and although many of these decontextualized pieces are autobiographical, all of them portray a sense of intimacy and exploration of identity—connecting the pieces to each other through a larger narrative about Black femininity and tugging on the thread of the viewer’s own lived experience.
Dexter Wimberly has exhibited the work of hundreds of artists internationally and founded the Hayama Artist Residency in Japan. During his decade–long career, he has organized exhibitions and programs at dozens of museums and galleries, including the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), the California African American Museum, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, bitforms gallery, and the Third Line Gallery, among others. The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), a Smithsonian affiliate, is a contemporary art museum that celebrates Black cultures, ignites challenging conversations, and inspires learning through the global lens of the African Diaspora. MoAD is uniquely positioned as one of the few museums in the world focused exclusively on African Diaspora culture and on presenting the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa and of African descendant cultures all across the globe.

WHALES FUCKING
EDITED BY EMILY A. KUHLMANN AND ERIN JENOA GILBERT; PRODUCED BY THE MUSEUM OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA
A celebration of the enduring work, influence, and legacy of the legendary artist and educator
Examining the essential and influential art of Mary Lovelace O’Neal, this survey of work spanning the last 30 years celebrates the legacy of a teacher, mentor, and heroine for many. As professor emerita of the University of California, Berkeley’s Art Studio Department—a first for an African American woman at the time—Lovelace O’Neal has become renowned as an important educator and painter of activist abstractions that have inspired countless artists in the San Francisco Bay Area, nationally, and globally. Constantly experimenting with form, color, and figuration to engage in cultural and artistic conversations on behalf of social justice, Lovelace O’Neal presents an oeuvre that continuously subverts the expectations imposed on Black artists, as well as defines the cultural power of minimalism and abstract expressionism.
Emily A. Kuhlmann is the former director of exhibitions and curatorial affairs at the Museum of the African Diaspora. Erin Jenoa Gilbert is the curator of African American Manuscripts at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art.
