to see, and things to eat—it features 24 different aspects of city living. As with the other acclaimed books in the series, die-cut icons hint at the larger context on the next spread. Each section opens with a full city scene but gradually focuses in on the small, unique neighborhoods that make the city large and grand. This clever book will attract young readers living in a metropolis as well as those in the countryside with urban life that pops off each page. Christopher Franceschelli is a seasoned publisher, editor, and creator of children’s books. He runs Chronicle’s Handprint imprint and the SmartInk packaging company. A born-and-raised New Yorker, Franceschelli lives with his family in Brooklyn. Peskimo is a husband-and-wife illustration and design team. They live in Bristol, England.

When a girl receives a beautiful porcelain box from her grandmother, she immediately wants something special to put inside it. But what could it be? What does she love best? She loves jumping in puddles on rainy days, blowing bubbles in the park, and watching her little sister’s first steps. As it turns out, life’s most precious treasures cannot be contained in a box! With a gentle message about the immateriality of happiness, this story reminds us to take pleasure in everyday moments. The book is beautifully packaged with a sparkly die-cut star on the cover, and flaps throughout reveal hidden surprises. Jo Witek is the author of Hello in There!, In My Heart, and Brave As Can Be. As far as he can tell, Bear is the biggest thing around. He might even be a giant! It's not long before other, smaller animals set him straight in this charmingly illustrated book about counting and relative size. Together, two walruses, three foxes, and so on, are the same size as Bear, each teasing him for foolishly thinking that there is nothing bigger than he. When six sardines arrive to tell Bear that together, they are just as big as he is, Bear has had enough and gobbles them up for breakfast. Alice Brière-Haquet is an author and a teacher. Iggy Peck and Rosie Revere have earned their places among the most beloved children’s characters and have inspired countless kids and adults to follow their passions. Determined Ada Twist, with her boundless curiosity for science and love of the question “Why?,” is destined to join these two favorites. Like her classmates Iggy and Rosie, Ada has always been hopelessly curious. Why are there pointy things stuck to a rose? Why are there hairs growing inside your nose? She embarks on fact-finding missions and conducts scientific experiments, all in the name of discovery. When her house fills with a horrific, toe-curling smell, Ada knows it’s up to her to find the source. But, this time, her experiments lead to trouble. Award-winning author Duncan Tonatiuh reimagines one of Mexico’s cherished legends. Princess Izta had many wealthy suitors but dismissed them all. When a mere warrior, Popoca, promised to be true to her and stay always by her side, Izta fell in love. The emperor promised Popoca if he could defeat their enemy Jaguar Claw, then Popoca and Izta could wed. When Popoca was near to defeating Jaguar Claw, his opponent sent a messenger to Izta saying Popoca was dead. Izta fell into a deep sleep and, upon his return, even Popoca could not wake her. As promised Popoca stayed by her side. So two volcanoes were formed: Iztaccíhuatl, who continues to sleep, and Popocatépetl, who spews ash and smoke, trying to wake his love. Duncan Tonatiuh’s books have won numerous awards: Diego Rivera won the Pura Belpré Illustration Award; Pancho Rabbit won two Pura Belpré Honor awards, for illustration and narrative; Separate Is Never Equal won the prestigious Sibert Honor Award; and Funny Bones won the Sibert Award. He lives in Mexico.

ALSO AVAIL AB LE Ada Lovelace (1815–1852) was the daughter of Lord Byron, a poet, and Anna Isabella Milbanke, a mathematician. Her parents separated when she was young, and her mother insisted on a logicfocused education, rejecting Byron’s “mad” love of poetry. But Ada remained fascinated with her father and considered mathematics “poetical science.” Via her friendship with inventor Charles Babbage, she became involved in “programming” his Analytical Engine, a precursor to the computer, thus becoming the world’s first computer programmer. This picture book biography of Ada Lovelace is a compelling portrait of a woman who saw the potential for numbers to make art. Fiona Robinson is the author/illustrator of Whale Shines and What Animals Really Like, among other picture books. What Animals Really Like received the 2012 Irma Black Award, and Bank Street named it one of the 2012 Best Children’s Books. Her work has been honored by the Royal Academy of Arts.

“I was born liking math,” eighty-year-old Katherine Johnson told a reporter in 1998. “I counted the steps. I counted the plates that I washed. I counted everything.’’ Young Katherine did that counting in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, where she entered elementary school as a second grader shortly before her sixth birthday. Going through school in leaps and bounds, this math prodigy was poised to start high school at age ten in 1928. But there was a problem. Her hometown had no high school for blacks.

Allen Allensworth 1842–1914
Twelve-year-old Allen saw tears streaming down his mother’s face as he stood in her cabin. His mother lay in bed, utterly forlorn. Her husband had died a few years back. Her other twelve sons and daughters were long gone from Louisville, Kentucky. Some had been sold. Others had escaped. Now Allen, her youngest, was being taken from her. The boy had been sold to a man with a plantation in Henderson County, Kentucky, more than one hundred miles away. The sale was Allen’s punishment for trying to improve himself by honing his reading and writing skills.

Goosebumps meets NERDS meets Scooby Doo in this graphic novel mystery series about the power of misfits. The Creeps are in trouble, again. When rule breaking during one of their investigations lands the detectives in “service detention,” the four friends find themselves lugging pumpkins off a foreclosed pumpkin patch. Once carved, the jack-o-lanterns come to life—and attack everyone within reach! It turns out the pumpkins came from a cursed patch, and to stop the Attack-o-Lanterns from destroying their town, the Creeps will have to team up with the patch’s unpleasant owner, Old Lady Bitterwood, who happens to be a witch. In the spirit of A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters stars Jaundice and Kale Bland—two sisters who avoid excitement at any cost. Instead, they eat tasteless oatmeal, rarely venture into bright sunlight, and read only Dr. Snoote’s Dictionary, because storybooks are just too thrilling. Together, they await the return of their parents, who left for an errand years ago and have never come back. One day, a knock on the door leads to the Bland sisters’ kidnapping by an all-female band of pirates—but this is only the beginning of their escapades. Filled with Roald Dahl-esque humor, high jinks, and swashbuckling, The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters will appeal to middle-grade readers looking for an anything-but-bland adventure. Kara LaReau was an editor for many years until she became a full-time writer. She has published many acclaimed picture books for children, including Ugly Fish and Rabbit & Squirrel. Everyone said they were witches. I desperately wanted to believe it. They moved through the corridors like sleek fish, ripples in their wake, stares following their backs and their hair. The Graces had friends, but then they didn’t. They changed friends like some people changed hairstyles, as if perpetually waiting for someone better to come along. No one had real details of their personal lives—except for whoever Fenrin was sleeping with on any given week, as he never hid it. These girls were nothing, just distractions. He was waiting for someone special, someone different who would catch his attention so suddenly and so completely, he’d wonder how he had survived all this time without them. They all were, all three of them. I could see it. All I had to do was find a way to show them it was me they’d been waiting for.

This fabulously addictive paranormal fantasy combines lyrical prose with a twist that even the savviest reader won’t anticipate. It’s a must-read for fans of We Were Liars, The Haunting of Sunshine Girl, and Red Queen. Everyone loves the Graces. Fenrin, Thalia, and Summer Grace are attractive, rich, glamorous, and—maybe—witches. They’ve cast a spell over their entire town. If you’re not in love with one of them, you want to be them. Especially River, the loner new girl at school. River’s dark, aloof, and just maybe . . . magical. What the Graces don’t know is that River’s presence is no accident. And the first rule of witchcraft is that if you want something hard enough, you can get it . . . no matter who has to pay. Laure Eve was born in Paris and currently lives in London, where she works in the marketing department of Hachette UK. She is also the author of Fearsome Dreamer and The Illusionists, both published in the UK.

The only thing sixteen-year-old Amelia Anderson loves more than movies is her older brother, Toby, a larger-than-life force, as popular with the cheerleaders as with the stoners. Amelia, on the other hand, is addicted to Netflix and afraid to drive. But she doesn’t mind. She’s happy playing the sidekick in the movie version of Toby’s life. But when a devastating event takes Toby out of the picture, Amelia’s left without a star. Ready or not, she has to step into her own spotlight. It’s time to get out of her head, get off of Netflix, and get behind the camera—and the wheel. This whip-smart, heart-wrenching debut YA novel about first love, first loss, and filmmaking will delight fans of Jandy Nelson and Jennifer Niven. Emma Wunsch has written movie reviews for The Washington Free Press, worked in a used bookstore, taught college-level writing, and published short fiction and journalism in a variety of publications including The Best of Bellevue Literary Review. I am Love. Your trusty narrator. It is quite possible that you think you’ve found me when you haven’t. That’s the funny thing about you people. You manage to see me in the most ridiculous of places: in a stolen kiss with your best friend’s boyfriend; in the warm, soft words of the boy who wants you to lose it on his basement couch. But this is True Love, you say. Sorry to disappoint, but a lot of the time, that’s not really me. I refer you back to Romeo and Juliet; Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere; Bella and Edward—history and literature are full of examples of people who made bad decisions in the name of, well, me. Forget about true, capital L “Love.” The real kind makes you better than you ever knew you could be. So, how do you fi d me? Well. I’m actually the one who fi ds you.

Jai sat on her bed and all the novices, younger and older, flocked around her as we always do when there is a new arrival. The little girls admired the long blonde hair flowing out of her linen headscarf. Our headscarves protect us from the strong sun, but under them our hair must never be bound. We never cut our hair either. Our hair holds our strength, Sister O says. The older girls quizzed her about where she came from, how long she had travelled, whether she had known anything about the Abbey before. Jai sat completely still. Her complexion was fairer than most, but I could tell that she was unusually pale. The skin under her eyes was thin and dark, nearly purple. Like violets in spring. She did not say a thing or answer a single question, she just looked around . . . “Do you understand what I am saying?” I asked softly. Maybe she came from such a faraway land that she did not even speak the coast languages. I did not when I first came . . . My first year at the Abbey was difficult before I learnt the language. Jai nodded. Then suddenly she opened her mouth to speak. “Is it true there are no menfolk here?” Her voice was unexpectedly husky and her accent was one I had never heard before. I shook my head. “Never. Men are not allowed on the island. The fishermen we trade with do not set foot on the land, Sister Veerk buys the catch from the pier. We have male animals of course. One quite savage rooster, some billy goats. But no men.”

Into this idyllic existence comes Jai, a girl with a dark past. She has escaped her home after witnessing the killing of her beloved sister. Soon the dangers of the outside world follow Jai into the sacred space of the Abbey, and Maresi can no longer hide in books and words but must become one who acts. Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door . . . Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” is one of the most widely recognized poems in the English language. When it first appeared in the New York Evening Mirror in 1845, the poem made Poe an overnight sensation. Master paper engineer David Pelham amazes us once again with his pop-up design to interpret this haunting love story. Edgar Allan Poe, the 19th-century writer, is known for his gothic and macabre work. David Pelham, designer and paper engineer, has created numerous bestselling children’s books. Christopher Wormell, an outstanding artist and printmaker, has written and illustrated a variety of children’s books. Pelham and Wormell reside in London.
