JUST LIKE MAMA By Lesléa Newman Illustrated by Julia Gorton The perfect book for a mother and child to share on Mother’s Day and throughout the year Just Like Mama is a beautiful testament to the love between mother and daughter, and especially how, in a child’s eyes, a mother does everything perfectly, from cooking to playing to simply loving. There are some things that no one can do as well as a mom: “A pile of apple pancakes, each one shaped into a moon, and cocoa with a cloud of cream, stirred with her special spoon. Nobody cooks breakfast just like Mama.” Nor gardens, hosts tea parties, cooks supper, or tucks her child into bed. No one does it just like Mama can. And in the end, nobody loves Mama just like her little girl does.

The reader must find all of them hidden within the artwork so that the grand finale can begin! Ballroom Bonanza teaches children about some of the most popular styles of dance, and helps them learn their ABC’s.

DEAR PRIMO A Letter to My Cousin By Duncan Tonatiuh A debut picture book by an exciting new author and artist who cleverly uses writing to open new worlds From first-time Mexican author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh comes the story of two cousins, one in America and one in Mexico, and how their daily lives are different yet similar. Charlie takes the subway to school; Carlitos rides his bike. Charlie plays double Dutch on the sidewalk; Carlitos plays among the local cacti. Dear Primo covers the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of two very different childhoods, while also emphasizing how alike Charlie and Carlitos are at heart. Spanish words are scattered among the English text, providing a wonderful way to introduce the language and culture of Mexico to young children. Inspired by the ancient art of the Mixtecs and other cultures of Mexico, Tonatiuh incorporates their stylized forms into his own artwork. The book includes a glossary of Spanish words.

MY FRIEND MAYA LOVES TO DANCE By Cheryl Willis Hudson Illustrated by Eric Velasquez Young dancers will twirl and leap as Maya and her friend share a love of dance in two very unique ways. The pages of this rhyming picture book themselves seem to dance, thanks to the charming verse of Cheryl Willis Hudson and the vibrant colors and motion of Eric Velasquez’s paintings. A young narrator tells readers about her friend Maya, who absolutely loves to dance. In fact, Maya can’t get enough of dance: the music, the costumes, the grand entrances, the pirouettes, the magic of recitals, and the final bows. She even loves the hard work of practice. But Maya isn’t dancing just for herself.

ORANGE PEEL’S POCKET By Rose Lewis Illustrated by Grace Zong From the bestselling author of I Love You Like Crazy Cakes comes a sweet story of a little girl who learns about her native country. One day Orange Peel—who got her nickname by eating orange peels when she was little—and her classmates learn about China. Everyone asks her questions about the country where she was born. But she doesn’t have all the answers. So she joins her mother on her errands to find out. The shops they visit are owned by people from China, and each has a story to tell. From Mr. Fan the tailor, who speaks about silk, to Ma Sang, who owns an antiques store and writes poetry, each shopkeeper tells Orange Peel something about China. Orange Peel can’t wait to tell the kids at school about everything she has learned, but first she discovers gifts that have been slipped into her pocket by the store owners, all of which link her to the place where she was born. With its tender text and modern, thoughtful art, Orange Peel's Pocket is a wonderful look at China's influence on the world.

BLACK ELK’S VISION A Lakota Story By S. D. Nelson The only picture book that tells the amazing true story of Black Elk Told from the Native American point of view, Black Elk’s Vision provides a unique perspective on American history. From recounting the visions Black Elk had as a young boy, to his involvement in the battles of the Little Bighorn and Wounded Knee, to his time with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, this biographical account follows the Oglala-Lakota medicine man Black Elk (1863–1950) from childhood through adulthood. Told through Black Elk’s voice, the book brings to life what it was like to be Native American at that time. The Native people found their land overrun by Wha-shi-choos (white men), the buffalo slaughtered, and their people gathered onto reservations. Through it all, Black Elk clung to his childhood visions, which

Nicky Flynn’s life just got a whole lot harder. His parents are going through a messy divorce. He’s starting a new life, in a new city, in a new school. Now his mom has brought home from the shelter Reggie, an eighty-pound German shepherd who used to be a seeing-eye dog. At first Nicky isn’t sure about this canine intrusion. Soon, however, he’s on the path to finding out why a seeing-eye dog would be left at an animal shelter, and along the way discovers that Reggie is a true friend. But when Nicky tries to reconnect with his dad, he puts everything on the line, including the life of his new best friend. THE POPULARITY PAPERS By Amy Ignatow A hilarious debut novel, told in scrapbook style, about best friends and their disastrous attempts to conquer middle school Lydia and Julie are best friends with one goal: to crack the code of popularity. Lydia’s the bold one: aspiring theater star, stick-fighting enthusiast, and human guinea pig. Julie’s the shy one: observer and artist, accidental field hockey jock, and faithful recorder. In this notebook they write down their observations and carry out experiments to try to determine what makes the popular girls tick. But somehow, the harder Lydia and Julie try to imitate the popular girls, the farther they get from their goal—and each other. Amy Ignatow understands friendship and the fifth grade, and she knows just how to wring humor out of ordinary and extraordinary moments.

ATTACK OF THE FLUFFY BUNNIES By Andrea Beaty Illustrated by Dan Santat With all the sly humor of a B-movie, this novel about alien, mind-controlling rabbits will make readers dizzy with laughter. When Joules and Kevin Rockman’s parents drop them off at Camp Whatsitooya on their way to an International Spamathon, the twins expect a summer of marshmallows, campfires, and canoe trips. What they do not expect is to defend the earth from an invasion of sugar-addicted, murderous, seven-foot-tall rabbits from another galaxy. Happily, the Rockman twins, veteran watchers of the Late, Late, Late Creepy Show for Insomniacs, are well prepared for dealing with monstrous beings from outer space. If only their fellow campers were so lucky. Andrea Beaty, the author of several very funny picture books and a mystery novel, here reaches new heights of hilarity and verbal dexterity in a novel sure to become a camp—ba-dum-dum—classic.

The
StraNge Case of Origami Yoda
Oh yeah, one other thing I almost forgot about: Dwight. Dwight is the guy who carries Origami Yoda around on his finger. The strangest thing about Origami Yoda is that he is so wise even though Dwight is a total loser. I’m not saying that as an insult. It’s just a fact. Dwight never seems to do anything right. Always in trouble. Always getting harassed by other kids. Always picking his nose. Always finding a way to “ruin it for everyone,” as the teachers say. If he could just listen to Origami Yoda’s wisdom, like the rest of us, he would have it made. But no, he ends up barfing in class because he ate thirteen servings of canned peaches at lunch, or stealing a girl’s shoe, or wearing shorts with his socks pulled up above his knees.
He even manages to turn his good points into loser points. See, he is the total origami master of our school. First he made cranes and frogs and all that, then he started inventing his own stuff. Origami Yoda is not just a perfect paper version of Yoda, it’s also Dwight’s own design. He’s not the first person in the world to make an Origami Yoda, of course. There are a bunch of them on the Internet. But Dwight didn’t download instructions; he actually created his own Origami Yoda. But it’s one thing to make a paper Yoda, and it’s another to ask people to talk to it. That’s what makes him a loser. You can’t go around school with a paper Yoda on your finger talking to people. I bet even Origami Yoda would tell him that, if he would just listen.

THE STRANGE CASE OF ORIGAMI YODA By Tom Angleberger This quirky novel by an exciting new talent is one part mystery, one part school story, and one part celebration of the wisdom of Yoda! In this funny, perceptive exploration of the dynamics of a sixth-grade class, Dwight, a loser, dispenses surprisingly good advice to his classmates via an origami finger puppet of Yoda. Origami Yoda predicts the date of a pop quiz, guesses who stole the classroom Shakespeare bust, and saves a kid from popularity-crushing embarrassment. Is the puppet tapping into the Force? Dwight’s classmate Tommy decides to investigate, to figure out how Yoda can be so wise when Dwight himself is so clueless. With contributions from his puzzled classmates, he assembles the case file that forms this novel, and discovers that greatness sometimes comes in unlikely packages.

But when the ad starts getting negative attention and he doesn’t have time for his old friends and interests, fame doesn’t seem like so much fun anymore. He’ll need all his “acting” skills—and the help of his Hollywoodsavvy classmates—to figure out how to go back to being a normal kid again.

ANXIOUS HEARTS By Tucker Shaw An epic romance by the bestselling author of The Girls “Evangeline,” he repeated, calling at a whisper. “Evangeline.” He was not calling that she may hear, he was calling that somehow her soul might know that he was devoted entirely to her, only to her. “Evangeline, I will find you . . .” Eva and Gabe explore the golden forest of their seaside Maine town, unknowingly tracing the footsteps of two teens, Evangeline and Gabriel, who once lived in the idyllic wooded village of Acadia more than one hundred years before them. On the day that Evangeline and Gabriel were to be wed, their village was attacked and the two were separated. And now in the present, Gabe has mysteriously disappeared from Eva. A dreamlike, loose retelling of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous love poem “Evangeline,” Anxious Hearts tells an epic tale of unrequited love and affirms the hope that true love can be reunited.

THE CHRONICLES OF FAERIE The Book of Dreams By O. R. Melling The long-awaited conclusion to the Chronicles of Faerie series Dana Faolan, the heroine of The LightBearer’s Daughter, has not adjusted to her new life in Canada and is using her access to the land of Faerie as a means of escape. She’s unprepared to battle the dark forces that threaten to sever the human world and Faerie for good. It will take the help of all the protectors of Faerie (many of whom were featured in the previous Chronicles of Faerie books), plus the assistance of a sexy and mysterious French Canadian boy, for Dana to meet the challenge of her destiny—as a half-human, half-fairy—to save her two worlds. As Booklist said in a starred review, Melling’s writing “shimmers with magic, myth, and romance.”
