NERDS combines all the excitement of international espionage with all the awkwardness of elementary school, and the results are hilarious. A group of unpopular fifth graders run a spy network from inside their school. With the help of cutting-edge science, they transform their nerdy qualities into incredible abilities! Their enemies? An array of James Bond–style villains, each with an evil plan more diabolical and more ridiculous than the last. Publishers Weekly raved: “Buckley has a flair for exaggerated humor.” School Library Journal said: “funny, clever, and thoroughly entertaining.” ISBN 9787 0-8 0 109-8 -898 85--6 US $6.9 95

The NERDS are back in another comical—and dangerous—mission. The last time we checked in with the pint-size superspies, they had successfully saved the world from near-total destruction . . . again. In the second book, it’s Duncan Dewey (code name Gluestick) who leads the adventures and misadventures of the geeky gang. This time the group must fight a villain so unlikely, he still lives with his mom. In other words, it’s the NERDS against one of their own kind in this exciting follow-up from an author reviewers praise as “ingenious” (books4yourkids.com) and “entertaining” (Children’s Literature). Michael Buckley is the author of The Sisters Grimm, a New York Times bestselling series and a Today Show Al Roker Book Club pick. He has also written and developed shows for such networks as the Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Disney. He lives with his family in Brooklyn, New York. Visit teamnerds.com.

One day, when accompanying her father to the estate of a recently departed clairvoyant, Misty discovers a notebook and a pair of eyeglasses that enable her to see ghosts! And solve mysteries. SELLING POINTS From the files of Thaddeus A. Ledbetter Let me introduce myself. My name is Thaddeus A. Ledbetter, and I am in the seventh grade at Crooked Creek Middle School. Not only an exceptionally erudite scholar, I am a member of thirteen clubs and organizations and the founder and president of eleven more. I’ve been blessed in many ways, so I feel it’s my duty to share my knowledge and talent with YOU! But—and you may find this hard to believe—I have been unjustly sentenced to in-school suspension. Yes, you read that correctly. A student of my abilities has been removed from the general population. During my confinement, I have worked hard on my defense—and this is my submission.
■ Hilarious debut: Humor books sell, thanks to Gordon Korman, Jon Scieszka, and Jeff Kinney ■ Strong voice: Crazy antics by an irreverent, one-of-akind middle-grader ■ Appealing format: Composed of lists, diagrams, notes, letters, e-mails, “fun facts,” and drawings ■ Early awareness: John Gosselink has already started the Thaddeus Ledbetter blog thaddeusledbetter .blogspot.com ■ Pop-culture appeal: Fans of Rushmore and Napoleon Dynamite will rally behind Thaddeus A. Ledbetter
Designed like a case file, chock-full of notes, journal entries, letters, e-mails, illustrations, and more, The Defense
of Thaddeus A. Ledbetter is a hilarious middle-grade novel that argues why Thaddeus should be released from his in-school suspension and explains the unbelievable circumstances that led to his punishment. Like Adrian Mole and the Great Brain, Thaddeus is a too-smart-for-his-own-good hero. Soon readers will be chanting, “Free Thaddeus!” ISBN 978-0-8109-8977-1

Katie-Rose, Violet, Milla, and Yasaman—four girls with seemingly little in common but their flower names—are nurturing their new friendship and are busy building luvyabunches.com, their very own social-networking site. Their first flower-power task? A doomed campaign to get their school to serve healthier snacks. The Jelly-Yums they champion—soon dubbed “beans of grossness”—taste like candied beets. And that’s just the start of their troubles. A scheming classmate tries to drive a wedge between Katie-Rose and Yasaman, Violet may have been slammed in a secret journal, and poor Milla unintentionally commits hamstercide. It will take all the strength and genuine affection of these pals to weather a particularly stormy week of fifth grade. In 1841, a Japanese fishing vessel sinks. Its crew is forced to swim to a small, unknown island, where they are rescued by a passing American ship. The boy lives for some time in New England, and then heads to San Francisco to pan for gold. After many years, he makes it back to Japan, only to be imprisoned as an outsider. When a blizzard threatens to ruin Valentine’s Day, three seventh-grade friends make and distribute fortune cookies to their lonely neighbors—and confront the secrets they’ve been keeping from one another. Confident Kate doesn’t notice much but the latest gossip, and shy Georgia can’t say out loud what’s always on her mind. They’re joined by observant, careful Olivia, whose epic, single-minded crush on PBJ (real name: Phillip Becker-Jacobs) is starting to frustrate the other two. Using fortune cookies that mysteriously always seem to speak directly to the person who opens them, the three girls try to work together to bring some love to their building, while reminding each other why they’re such good friends to begin with. With all the right ingredients to appeal to tween girls, this is an irresistible confection from an emerging talent. ISBN 978-0-8109-8990-0

For one charismatic kid, the dangerous world of the Forest of the Dead becomes the setting for the ultimate escape trick in this exciting debut novel. Jack Carr has been shuttled from foster home to group home to foster home his entire life. The only constant has been his interest in magic, especially handcuff escapes like those mastered by his hero, Harry Houdini. When he’s placed with the Professor, however, he feels like he’s finally found a home—but his new guardian is hiding a dangerous secret. Years ago the Professor bartered his soul to the undead magician Mussini, and when the payment is due, he sends Jack in his place. Jack must travel with Mussini to the Forest of the Dead, a place in between the real world and the afterlife, where he’s forced to perform in Mussini’s traveling magic show. If he stays in the Forest long enough, he’ll die himself. To find his way home, he’ll have the help of Mussini’s other “minions”—kids stolen just like Jack—and his wits, nothing more. Can he follow the example of his hero, Houdini, and escape the inescapable? ISBN 978-0-8109-8980-1

ausi ng tr ouble,” hi sse d t h e a l p h a wol f , “ b ut a b ove a l l p u t t ing a n end to any signs. When the dim day dawns, make sure the snow’s bleeding. We mercenaries hunt bear
cubs now—newborn.” The Dragga snarled, and despite herself, Anarga let out a growl at this talk as her eyes misted over, and she knew that her time had come. As she was swallowed by darkness, her body bracing to meet the pain, very dimly the female bear seemed somewhere else too, above ground, under the stars, gazing at a half circle of seated male bears. Suddenly, out of the dark, more boars were prowling toward them like hunters, and Anarga had the sense that the seated polar bears were Fellagorn. She groaned loudly. Now she felt the most intense anguish seize her as her eyes sensed the red of her own blood coursing through her body. Through the pulsing veil, the Bergo advanced on the Fellagorn, filled with menace and hate, and Anarga wanted to cry out and warn the Fellagorn, to rouse them somehow. Yet she was utterly helpless. Anarga wondered why the Storytellers didn’t rouse themselves, but sat mesmerized, as if they were letting the attackers through. Then the huge boars fell on the bears, roaring and raging, rising on their haunches and lashing out as, outside Anarga’s den, there was a shattering that shook the ground. “The Ice Cliff,” snarled the first wolf. “It sounds like it’s talking, or crying out. It’s the legend. The curse.” Anarga’s ears were filled with the sound, her eyes with those moaning, struggling forms. “What’s happening to me?” moaned Anarga as she heard the cliff boom again, mixed with the distant cries of wild and dying bears, and as Anarga struggled, it seemed as if the whole world were giving birth. The noise of the dying ice mountain filled the entire arctic landscape, waking all the polar bears. Yet Anarga could no longer hear the thundering rumbles outside, or see those fading images of fighting Bergo either, their halos of blood, for her eyes were open to the warm blue about her again, and the terrible sounds just outside had been replaced by a steady pounding in her head. The Bergeera’s heart was suddenly bursting with pride and love, as the new mother looked down in the icy stillness. There, in the semidarkness of her den, on the snowy floor of the glittering ice chamber, lay a tiny newborn polar bear cub, no bigger than a tree squirrel, steaming in the darkness, and so vulnerable that a wolf might have lapped it up on its tongue and swallowed it whole. When it journeyed through its magical realm, it took on the shape of a fantastical golden sailing ship. One day the ship was captured by a Great Enchanter and put under his spell. hilarious scenarios—his old school bus was a safari jeep pulled by wild creatures, the school was a castle, and the lunch menu included worms! His imagination wins him the attention and awe of his librarian and peers, setting the tone for a compelling story about conquering the fears of being a new kid, as well as the first-day jitters that many children experience. Crack open this tale of family and fright, as cute as it is creepy. All the animals in the zoo have friends and family to play with and love. All of them, that is, except Quackenstein. Lonely and bitter in his ramshackle corner, he decides to adopt an egg. He cares for it diligently, waiting until the moment when it will hatch a baby duck of his own. On a dark and stormy night, the egg hatches, Quackenstein cackles, and lightning strikes, but wait—what’s this? That baby’s not a duck! What will he do? Where can he hide? And will Quackenstein ever find someone (or something) to cuddle? Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen’s clever rhyming text is perfectly paired with cute and spooky art from Brian T. Jones. Like a tiny bird in a big city, Frida Kahlo feels lost and lonely when she arrives in San Francisco with her husband, the famous artist Diego Rivera. It is the first time she has left her home in Mexico. And Frida wants to be a painter too. But as Frida begins to explore San Francisco on her own, she discovers more than the beauty, diversity, and exuberance of America. She finds the inspiration she needs to become one of the most celebrated artists of all time.
Me, Frida is an exhilarating true story that encourages children to believe in themselves so they can make their own dreams soar. ISBN 978-0-8109-8969-6

the United States. Beginning with the story of Francisco Menendez, the captain of the black militia of St. Augustine, Fort Mose follows the history of slavery from West Africa to America, recounts what daily life was like, and describes the founding of the Spanish colony’s Fort Mose. Established in 1738, Fort Mose gave sanctuary to escaped Africans, challenging slavery in the English colonies. Approximately one hundred Africans lived together, creating a frontier community that drew on a range of African backgrounds, blending them with those of Spanish, Native American, and English peoples and cultural traditions. The book includes more than forty archival images, an afterword about uncovering Fort Mose (which is now part of the National Parks), a glossary, an author’s note, a bibliography, and an index.

Travels of the Zephyr is an interactive book that introduces readers to various lands and peoples across the globe through the notes of the fictional explorer James Mac Killian, who lived from 1889 to 1978. James Mac Killian traveled the world in his homemade hot-air balloon, the Zephyr, documenting everything and everyone he encountered. The goal of his particular expeditions was to visit different ethnic groups and discover traditions that dated back to the dawn of time, including different languages, foods, beliefs, and rituals, to name only a few. He explored such places as Greenland, Newfoundland, North America, Brazil, Scotland, Africa, New Zealand, Indonesia, China, and Russia. Now his niece, Caroline Mac Killian, has inherited his research and has decided to publish his findings. Throughout the book there are interactive devices, such as maps that unfold, envelopes with letters, sketches, drawings, and much more. The story is a work of fiction, but the information presented is factual and fascinating.
