Hi, If you’re reading this note, you’re probably a book person. I’m a book person too, but I’m a kid person first. As a publisher of books for young children, I am most fulfilled by the glee of an eight-month-old when she finds a flap to lift, the explosion of giggles from a two-year-old when an illustration takes him by surprise, the pride of a four-year-old as she sings out the rhyming last word of a couplet. These children’s joyful first experiences with books will shape their lives as readers. Instilling an early love of books is a great responsibility for a publisher, and an exciting opportunity as well, as the audience’s needs change so quickly. It is a time of “firsts,” of sensory learning, a time when books are tasted and touched and dragged everywhere. Babies and toddlers grow into new books every month, creating frequent occasions to visit the bookstore. However, since toddlers don’t make their own purchases, books for this age group must appeal to adults as well. Relatives, caregivers, and teachers must not only select the books, but also share in and model the reading experience. The Abrams Appleseed list has been created and curated to foster the development of its young readers and engage them and their adults in artful, beautifully conceived books. Each book serves to expand on what the child already knows, and transform his or her perception of the world. Let us work together to delight children and grow readers. Welcome to Appleseed.

Pantone revolutionized the graphic arts industry with the launch, in 1963, of the Pantone Matching System®, which enabled designers and printers to articulate and reproduce accurate color anywhere in the world. This system achieved global acceptance and quickly became the standard in color naming and matching. Today, Pantone serves not only as the premier color consultant and authority on trends but also as a consumer brand in apparel, housewares, accessories, arts and crafts, stationery and office supplies, home furnishings, electronics, and apps.

This artful first colors book introduces children to 9 basic colors and 20 shades of each. Readers will immerse themselves in the concept that one color name actually refers to a variety of dark, light, and in-between tones. Young children will begin by simply naming the colors of the monochromatic images and will soon grow to select their favorite and least-favorite shades. Pantone: Colors is a visually pleasing way to expand the colors conversation and develop a child’s sense of visual discrimination.

Laurent built on his father’s work and created many adventures for the elephant family, giving the series new spirit through his use of line and color. Laurent and his wife, Phyllis, split their time between New York City and Key West, Florida.

Seymour Chwast celebrates the daily routine of getting dressed in this fittingly whimsical and satisfyingly unique novelty book. Unlike more traditional books on this topic that deal with the how of getting dressed, Get Dressed! instead tackles the why. The text “Get dressed to read about dragons” accompanies an illustration of a boy dressed in a makeshift knight costume. A girl in full floral garb stands in a garden alongside the text “Get dressed to hide.” The book features half and full gatefolds, which foreshadow the items of clothing to be seen and provide surprise reveals on each spread. With a die-cut magnetic closure, even the cover invites readers to peek inside!

Little Pim needs just one more thing for his sandwich. Look through the shelves to help him find 10 bananas!

Little Pim was created in 2006 by Julia Pimsleur Levine, a mom who grew up bilingual and was looking for fun ways to introduce her young son to the French language. When she could not find any high-quality DVDs for teaching toddlers a foreign language, she decided to create them herself—something for which she was uniquely qualified, as a filmmaker, language instructor, and mother. Pimsleur Levine was inspired in part by having grown up in the language-teaching business. Her father, Dr. Paul Pimsleur, created one of the most popular and acclaimed languageinstruction methods for adults. Creating Little Pim was her way of carrying on the family tradition of raising bilingual kids and sharing that love of learning with other families.
