My Life in Pink & Green

Operation Redwood

By Lisa Greenwald

By S. Terrell French

An entrepreneurial story with an environmental twist from a bright new voice

Can an e-mail message save a forest? “Sibley Carter is a moron and a worldclass jerk.” When Julian Carter-Li intercepts an angry e-mail message meant for his greedy, high-powered uncle, it sets him on the course to stop an environmental crime! His uncle’s company plans to cut down some of the oldest remaining California redwood trees, and it’s up to Julian and a ragtag group of friends to figure out a way to stop them. This fantastic debut novel, full of clever stunts and pranks, shows the power of determined individuals, no matter what their age, to stand up to wrongdoing. And it introduces readers to a memorable cast of characters—smart kids who care about the world around them.

Twelve-year-old Lucy Desberg is a natural problem solver. After the local homecoming queen shows up at her family’s struggling drugstore with a beauty disaster that Lucy helps to fix, Lucy has a long line of makeover customers for every school dance and bat mitzvah. But all the makeup tips in the world won’t help save the pharmacy. If only she could find a way to make the pharmacy the center of town again—a place where people want to spend time, like in the old days. Lucy dreams up a solution that could resuscitate the family business and help the environment, too. But will Lucy’s family stop fighting long enough to listen to a seventh-grader? This book is a funny and sweet debut featuring an unforgettable narrator who knows what she wants, whether it’s great makeup, a killer business plan, or a better world.

Middle-Grade Fiction | ages 10 and UP | 7

Perfect for fans of smart mysteries like Chasing Vermeer !

The Unknowns By Benedict Carey This quirky novel follows a pair of clever kids who end up breaking the case using geometry and algebra.

So here’s the thing, and you can ask anyone about it: People were praying for something twisted to happen last summer. They didn’t care what it was, either. A hurricane, an earthquake, a hostage situation—seriously, anything. We wanted a problem, and a hairy one, just for something to do. You would’ve too, if you lived where we did. Folsom Adjacent, it’s called. Adjacent—uh-JAYsent, is how you say it—means nearby or next to, so it doesn’t even have its own name. Doesn’t deserve it, really, because it’s not much of a town, or a place. Or even a neighborhood. Adjacent is a trailer park named after a nuclear plant, is what it is. Think of hundreds of beat-up mobile homes scattered around a gas station, a musty grocery store, a bar, and a desperate little elementary school, which was just two old trailers pushed together with a sign that said adjacent elementry. Someone forgot the “a” and it never got fixed.

Adjacent is on a small island, a coastal island, close to shore. On a clear day you can see miniature people having normal lives over in the city across the way, Crotona. Crotona is too full of very important people for its own good but at least it’s a real place, with actual stuff to do and see. Adjacent’s got nothing, no mall or multiplex or skate park. Even Folsom Energy, the giant plant where half the parents work, doesn’t seem real. It was built entirely underground. All you see is a flat, dusty nothing surrounded by barbed wire and signs that say authorized personnel only all over the place. As if people wanted to sneak into that place. As if we weren’t already trapped behind barbed wire, a million miles from anything, in a place where nothing ever happened. Until one week in July, that is. That’s when suddenly it looked like the praying might have worked: People in Adjacent began to disappear.

In a trailer park called Adjacent, next to the Folsom Energy Plant, people have started to vanish, and no one seems to care. At first Lady Di and her best friend, Tom Jones, barely notice the disappearances—until their beloved math tutor, Mrs. Clarke, is abducted, too. Mrs. Clarke has left them clues, in the form of math equations, that lead them all over the trailer park, through hidden tunnels under “Mount Trashmore,” and into the Folsom Energy Plant itself, where Lady Di and Tom Jones and a gang of other misfits uncover the sordid truth about what’s really happening there.

Benedict Carey, a former Los Angeles Times writer and current New York Times science section writer, was a math and physics major in college, so he knows his geometry. Hoping to ignite a passion for math in his own kids, Benedict decided to craft a smart and action-packed story for middle-grade readers that uses math lessons to solve the mysterious disappearance of their math tutor. He and his wife and children live in Pelham, New York.

The Chronicles of Faerie

The Book of Dreams $ The small island floated on the waves; no more than a grassy hillock with a single tall tree. The tree appeared to be in blossom, with a profusion of white flowers, but as Honor drew near she saw the truth. The branches bore neither fruit nor flower, but a great flock of birds. Heads tucked under their wings, fast asleep, they were hushed and pure-white like a fall of new snow. The soul-birds of Faerie. Honor knew that what she was contemplating was an unimaginable risk. To waken the soul-birds was to waken Old Magic, an ancient and mysterious force that existed before the worlds came into being; before the great divide of good and evil. There was no telling what might happen if she woke that power. It was unpredictable. It could not be controlled. The only thing she knew for certain was that it guaranteed change.

The Book of Dreams

And things had to change. So much was wrong and bound to get worse. All the prophecies and predictions were clear: Faerie’s doom was upon them. It was Dana’s destiny to counter this doom, but she was too weak for the mission. Honor could see that even if her beloved husband, the High King, could not. Despite her determination, Honor felt the tremor in her soul. Did she dare such a thing? To tamper with Old Magic? “Desperate times call for desperate measures,” she muttered to herself. Before she could change her mind, she raised her arms and cried out in full voice. “Sleepers awake!”

By O.R. Melling In the fourth and final book in the series, a Booklist Top 10 Pick, the land of Faerie faces its greatest danger, and only a hero’s sacrifice can save it. Dana Faolan, the spunky half-faerie heroine of The Light-Bearer’s Daughter, the third book in The Chronicles, has been using her access to the land of Faerie to escape the troubles of being a teenager in a new town. But a dark, mysterious enemy is determined to sever the two worlds forever, thus dooming both. It will take all of Dana’s bravery and resourcefulness, plus the help of friends old and new, to save her two homes, especially when it becomes clear that the answer lies in an act of terrible sacrifice. Just as the previous books explored Ireland’s rich folkloric history, The Book of Dreams delves into the magical lore of Canada. Melling delivers another “compelling blend of mythology and geography” (School Library Journal, starred review) that will thrill fans of the series.

Girls

“Thanks, Penny,” she said. “It’s Peggy,” I said. “Oh,” she said. “Whatever.” Sylvia Fowler pushed past and strode toward the counter, black stilettos clacking with each step. I stood in the doorway, stuck, tangled in my scarf and duffel strap, watching her spidery walk. “Latte, Andrea,” Sylvia said at the barista, whose name was Amber, which Sylvia knew. She pushed her black wraparound sunglasses up onto her patent-leather hair, pulled back into a crazytight chignon. Chignon. Now there was a word I never knew before I got to Aspen. You have to hand it to Sylvia. She was committed to being Sylvia. And that meant wearing black. In the sea of blond shearling and grey chinchilla and white quilted nylon that is the Timberlake, that is any coffee shop in Aspen for that matter, Sylvia was always the only one in black, hair included. Knee-high boots, thick black tights, thigh-length wrap coat, bulky cashmere scarf, driving gloves, mascara—all black, deep black, sleek against her icy white skin. The only thing not black or white was her lips, thickly coated in the richest, shiniest ruby-red lipstick. Amber started packing espresso for Sylvia’s latte. I watched Sylvia narrow her eyes and lock them into the back of Amber’s head. Sylvia knew that Amber always had fresh gossip. She made lattes for everyone. Everyone. And she served up gossip that was even hotter than the coffee. “So,” said Sylvia, licking her red lips. “Was winter break boring, or what?” She dug through

the suitcase-size, buckle-heavy leather handbag (black, duh) hanging from her forearm. Amber wrenched the espresso lever into the press, refastened her curly black ponytail, and shook her head. “Are you kidding? You probably heard about that whole thing with Stephen Haines-Durant. His father owns the Durant Hotel up the street. Anyway, he’s supposed to be going out with Mary Moorhead, right? Perfect couple, right? Richest guy in Aspen and richest girl at Maroon Bells Academy? Anyway, he’s been hooking up with some girl who works at Mod Jeans.” I froze. Did I really hear what I just heard? Stephen Haines? Mary’s boyfriend? They really were the perfect couple. And ever since I’d known them they had been attached at the hip. Half of me knew for sure: Stephen would never cheat on Mary. This couldn’t be true. But the other half of me knew I had to keep listening. What if? Sylvia took a gulp of her still-searing-hot latte, a big one, the kind of gulp that would burn a normal mouth, but not Sylvia’s, then dramatically dropped the mostly unfinished cup into the trashcan next to the counter. She slid her sunglasses back over her eyes and dropped a crumpled twenty-dollar bill on the counter. Amber started punching buttons on the cash register. “And what is that lipstick you have on? It’s so red.” “Jungle red,” said Sylvia. “It’s from Dubai. You can’t get it here.”

By Tucker Shaw No boys allowed! Fans of Gossip Girl will delight in this irresistible novel. Meet Mary: She’s beautiful, and her ski-star boyfriend is cheating on her. Meet Crystal: She’s a townie, and she’s cheating with Mary’s boyfriend. Meet Sylvia: She’s nasty, and she’s got something up her Prada-designed sleeve. Meet Amber: She’s a flake, she’s the barista at the hottest coffee shop in Aspen, and she serves up gossip even hotter than grande skim lattes. Meet Peggy: She’s Mary’s best friend, and she has no idea how to cope with all these girls. A modern retelling of the classic play The Women (which featured not one male in the cast), The Girls is a quickwitted, stylish comedy about friendship, love, and most important, gossip! An elite Aspen prep school sets the stage for jealousy and intrigue as the lives of many girls tangle into a wickedly fun mess (in which no boys ever appear).

Both plays have been refreshingly updated in the style of manga while maintaining Shakespeare’s beautiful language.

Coriko has never known a world beyond his cell and his cellmate and best friend, Pippa. He does what he’s told and tries not to anger the Spears, the cruel, masked jailers who guard him and the other child slaves. But without warning, the children’s orderly lives begin to change. Violent events shake up the quiet world of Grassland, and Coriko must find the strength to grasp his freedom. Now I Know

The Toll Bridge

By Aidan Chambers

“Remarkably perceptive . . . a very moving book.” —The Canberra Times Now I Know is all at once a compelling meditation on faith and religion—and the difference between the two—and an intense love story. When a body is found hanging from a crane in a scrapyard, Tom sets out to investigate this strange case. Nik embarks on a research mission for a film about a contemporary life of Jesus. Then there’s Julie, a girl bandaged from head to toe and laid up in a hospital bed. These three simultaneous plots— presented through a combination of letters, prose, poetry, jotted notes, flashbacks, and puzzles—are woven together into a provocative novel of mystery and self-discovery. Like the other books in The Dance Sequence, Now I Know can be read alone or as part of the series.

“All my books are like a family. You like each person in the family for different reasons.” —Aidan Chambers

To escape the pressures of suffocating parents and a possessive girlfriend, seventeen-year-old Piers takes a job as a keeper of a toll bridge and its cottage. There he befriends Adam, a charismatic wayfarer who shows up one day and refuses to leave. He also befriends a girl named Tess, and soon he and Tess find themselves strangely attracted to Adam and falling under his spell. The three test their sexuality and the bonds of their friendship as they discover who they are—and aren’t—in a harrowing course of events that leaves all three wondering if you can ever really know anyone. Like the other books in The Dance Sequence, The Toll Bridge can be read alone or as part of the series.

My First Nursery Book

Good Night, Baby Ruby

By Franciszka Themerson

By Rohan Henry

In association with Tate Publishing

The perfect book for new parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and others to share with the new baby in their lives

This classic, stylish, and hip nursery book for the very young is available for the first time in the United States.

Baby Ruby, like so many children, doesn’t want to go to bed. After she gets a bath and has her hair brushed, no one can find her! Is she rooting through the closet? Or is she playing with kitty? Explore along with Baby Ruby as she avoids bedtime—but not for too long . . . Lovable Ruby will charm bedtime readers with her curiosity and playfulness. Celebrated illustrator Rohan Henry, author of The Gift, brings his unique style to children’s books for the first time with remarkable results. His deceptively simple line drawings evoke the small moments that capture a child’s imagination.

A true masterpiece of book design and illustration for beginning readers, this collection pairs well-known nursery tales with uniquely beautiful period illustrations that look as fresh and vital today as they did six decades ago, when the book was first published in Great Britain. Never before published in the United States, My First Nursery Book features four beloved stories: “Who Killed Cock Robin?,” “The Gingerbread Man,” “Three Little Pigs,” and “The Three Bears.” Franciszka Themerson, a Polish avant-garde artist and filmmaker who returned to children’s book illustration as a refugee in London in the 1940s, is regarded as one of the great talents in classic children’s book illustration. Finally, American children can experience and enjoy this remarkable volume, filled with stunning illustrations that will bring a new audience to Themerson’s genius. Chicken Butt!

Chicken Soup

By Erica S. Perl

By Jean Van Leeuwen

Illustrated by Henry Cole

Illustrated by David Gavril

This deliciously silly picture book invites kids and parents to giggle together, and builds reading confidence.

What happens when you’re a chicken and Mrs. Farmer is making chicken soup? Find out in this offbeat picture book of barnyard misunderstandings.

You know what? What? Chicken butt! The classic schoolyard joke has been recast as an irreverent picture book, with call-and-response parts for parent and child. The word repetition in Erica S. Perl’s text, and wonderfully comic illustrations by beloved artist Henry Cole, make this a particularly inviting book for new readers, as does the opportunity to “trick” a parent or other adult into participating in a very silly joke. The humor builds to a surprising and satisfying conclusion. Warning: Kids will want to read this one over and over and over again!

SPECIFICATIONS: 32 pages, full color, 9 x 9" Hardcover ISBN: 978-0-8109-8325-0 US $12.95 CAN $14.50 CARTON QTY: 22 April RIGHTS: World

Rumor has it that Mrs. Farmer is making chicken soup, so the chickens are on the run—except for poor Little Chickie, who has a bad cold. No matter where she hides—the hayloft, a milk pail, or the sheep pen—her sneezes give her away. She is sure to be found soon! The unbeatable mother-son team of award-winning and bestselling author Jean Van Leeuwen, whose Oliver and Amanda Pig books are a children’s literature staple, and her son, up-and-coming illustrator David Gavril (Penelope Nuthatch and the Big Surprise), have created a charming picture book very much in the spirit of Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE WORLD OF TOMORROW?

Twenty Years of Powwow Tradition

Written and illustrated by Brian Fies

By Ben Marra and Linda Marra

This unique graphic novel tells the story of a young boy and his relationship with his father. Spanning the period from the 1939 New York World’s Fair to the last Apollo space mission in 1975, it is told through the boy’s eyes as he grows up in an era that was optimistic and ambitious, fueled by industry, engines, electricity, rockets, and the atom bomb. The insightful book mixes art and historical photographs to create a lively trip through a half century of technological evolution.

Since 1988, photographer Ben Marra and his wife, Linda, have crisscrossed the nation to document the majestic dance regalia worn at Native American powwows. The resulting images are stunning and capture not only the brilliant colors and incredible craftsmanship of the regalia, but the personal journeys that inspire them. The ageless rhythms of the powwow’s drums invite them to celebrate traditions both ancient and modern, and come together as a proud community determined and honor-bound to tend the flame of the powwow tradition.

SPECIFICATIONS: 200 pages of color illustrations with 40 pages on special comics paper 208 pages, 6 5⁄8 x 10 3⁄16" Hardcover with jacket ISBN: 978-0-8109-9636-6 US $24.95 CAN $27.50 april RIGHTS: world
