Spring Branches
Finished Size Flower: 3" diameter Leaf: 2" long x 1½" wide Supplies Practice paper: 1 sheet of origami or other thin paper Ten #4 white cone coffee filters Scraps of card stock for templates, cut to 3½" x 1¾" for flower (F) and 2" square for leaf (L) Utility scissors
Everyone’s face brightens when the dogwood trees bloom in early spring. Create that happy springtime feeling in your home any time of year with these budding paper flowers. I chose coffee filters for these flowers because I knew their wonderful, crepe-like texture would give them a soft natural look. If you like, you can use a little watercolor paint to vary each one (see page 00).
Directions for leaves Note: One coffee filter makes two leaves (and one flower), and the directions below yield one leaf.
1. To cut two leaf patterns from a coffee filter, first position and trace the flower template (F) as follows: Place F on the filter’s folded edge, and trace around it with a pencil. Next place the leaf template (L) alongside the traced flower template, as shown in Drawing 1, and trace around L. Cut out the tracings, which will yield one square (when opened) for a flower and two squares for leaves. Set the flower square and one of the leaf squares aside for now.

Snakes, Snakes, Snakes, and More Scored Snakes
Supplies Note: In dimensions throughout, the width precedes the width.
for all motifs Practice paper: 1 sheet of poster board One 20" x 30" sheet of medium-weight black card stock (makes 2 snakes) One 16" x 20" rectangle of poster or mat board, for background Pencil Magic Rub Eraser Scoring tool and mat (page 00)
A slithering snake is the inspration for this amazingly easy-to-make abstract wall art. Cut, score, and sculpt a few different “snakes,” and then frame one or more of your favorites. Guys are really intrigued by this project. If you’re looking to charm one, this no-fuss project is a good place to ssssstart.
Directions 1. Position the card stock horizontally and face up, and cut (see “Tips for Cutting Paper Well” on page 00) it in half to make two 20" x 15" sheets. Repeat the steps below on both sheets.
2. Using a pencil, loosely draw a loopy line down the center of the paper (see Drawing 2 on page 00). Don’t worry if your drawing doesn’t look exactly like the one pictured. As my friend Toby says, “In nature, all snakes in the forest are different.”
3. Lightly draw an outline shape around your loopy line about ¾" wide on each side of the line, exaggerating the shape around the loops. Draw freely as you sketch the snake’s head; you can fine-tune it later when cutting it out.
Utility scissors Glue dots or double-sided tape One 16" x 20" frame

a 21st-century guide to folding, cutting, scoring, pleating, and recycling
Margaret Van Sicklen blows the dust off of traditional paper crafting, presenting more than 20 projects that rely on classic techniques — folding, cutting, scoring and sculpting, pleating, and recycling — but are suited to 21st-century style. The suite of projects in this contemporary volume ranges from gift wrap, holiday ornaments, and note cards to frames, boxes, bowls, silhouettes, wall art, mobiles, and even a folding screen. Step-by-step photo tutorials of basic techniques and illustrated instructions make every project accessible to novice and advanced crafters alike.
