BE THE WORST YOU CAN BE
Do you still smoke a pack of cigarettes a Day? moking is a dying art. i do my bit to support it. i remember having to write out 500 lines, when caught smoking at school, “Nicotine is an awful curse, it strains the heart and drains the purse.” perhaps that hardened my resolve to enjoy every puff even more fully. my mother is a kleptomaNiac aND caNNot seem to coNtrol her compulsioN, though she has beeN regularly caught shopliftiNg, aND it is oNly the psychiatric reports that have stoppeD her beiNg imprisoNeD. she has seeN several Doctors, hypNotists, couNsellors iN aa-style support groups, but NothiNg seems to work. as coNveNtioNal meDical aDvice has proveD uNhelpful, i thought you may have a New approach? orry to hear the experts can’t help, but my experience of the problem is nil, so my advice is almost certainly useless. even worse, the cause of kleptomania is apparently unknown, though it may have a genetic component.
As you know, kleptomaniacs steal without even needing the things they take, and their motivation is probably different in each case. Sadly, a recent clinical study at Stanford University School of Medicine failed to find any conclusive benefit from medicating patients with the impulsive stealing disorder. The only advice I can offer is that she carry at all times a letter from her doctor, or hospital, explaining her condition, with £100 in cash to pay for items she has absconded with, hoping that the store will be understanding. If it were me, I would only let her go shopping accompanied by a friend to keep an eye on her, preferably not a friend who is another kleptomaniac from the support group. Or she could agree to only shop online, and browse the stores with her hands tied ingeniously inside her pockets.

“The most beautiful years of my life must pass without accomplishing the promise of my talent and powers,” he wrote to his close friend Karl Friedrich Amenda. But six months later, Beethoven had decided “to take Fate by the throat; it shall not wholly overcome me.”, even though he was profoundly deaf by the age of 45, twelve years before his death. It was during this period that he composed his greatest music including the Missa Solemnis, the Ninth Symphony, six string quartets and his final piano sonatas. Beethoven accepted his fate but he refused to allow it to determine his destiny. Sadly, almost none of us possesses both Beethoven’s genius and will, and can do little more than flail about in our sea of circumstance.

n 2005, director Christopher Nolan redefined the Batman legend with Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader.
A fresh, dynamic reboot of the franchise, Batman Begins explored the comic book hero’s origins and his evolution from billionaire Bruce Wayne to dark avenger who fights crime and corruption in Gotham City.
A 2008 sequel, The Dark Knight, took those compelling, characterdriven foundations and raised the stakes, pitting Batman against a deranged master criminal, the Joker, in an all-out war for Gotham’s soul. Now, the final film of Nolan’s trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, is 2012’s most anticipated film release. Christopher Nolan’s Batman: The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy tells the complete behind-the-scenes story of these three monumental films. Based on in-depth interviews with Nolan and all of the films’ key cast and crew, including cowriters David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan, cinematographer Wally Pfister and more, the book reveals the creative process behind the epic Dark Knight Trilogy, supported by lavish art and never-before-seen photography. aised in Queens, New York, Johnny Ramone founded one of the most influential rock bands
of all time. However, he never strayed from his bluecollar roots and attitude. He was truly imbued with the
angry-young-man spirit that would characterise his persona both on and off stage. Through it all, Johnny kept the band focused and moving forward, ultimately securing their place in music history by inventing punk rock. The Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002; two years later, Johnny died of cancer having outlived two other founding members. Revealing, inspiring and told on his own terms through the medium of his infamous “black books,” this highly designed memoir also features Johnny’s assessment of the Ramones’ albums, a number of eccentric Top Ten lists, rare historical artifacts and scores of personal and professional photos, many of which have never before been published. John Cummings (1948–2004), aka Johnny Ramone, was ranked by Rolling Stone as #16 on its list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. In Time’s rating of the “10 Greatest Electric-Guitar Players”, he was named, in a fit

enyse Schmidt is one of the leading quilters of the 21st century. Known as a “modern” quilter, she actually draws much of her creative vision
from quilts of the past. In Denyse Schmidt: Modern Quilts, Traditional Inspiration,
Schmidt pays homage to the quilters and quilts that came before her. Each of the 20 traditional quilt designs she has reinterpreted here (among them are Irish Chain, Mariner’s Compass and Orange Peel to name a few) is introduced with a lively overview of the pattern’s history. Instructions are illustrated; templates are provided at full size on a pullout pattern sheet; and a complete techniques section is included at the back of the book. Denyse Schmidt’s work has been featured in hundreds of publications, including the New York Times, Time and People, and at numerous museums. Her fabric and stationery lines are sold internationally. This artful first colours book introduces children to nine basic colours and 20 shades of each. Children will immerse themselves in the concept that one colour name actually refers to a variety of dark, light and in-between tones. Every spread features a colour name, a monochromatic image and a grid of 20 shades and tints of that same colour. Young children will begin by simply naming the colours of the high-contrast recognisable object. Slightly older children will excitedly study the shades to choose favourites; engrossing themselves in the variety of tones in every colour. Pantone revolutionised the graphic arts industry with the launch, in 1963, of the Pantone Matching System, which enabled designers and printers to articulate and reproduce accurate colour anywhere in the world. This system quickly became the standard in colour naming and matching. Today, Pantone serves not only as the premier colour consultant and authority on trends but also as a consumer brand in apparel, homeware, accessories, arts and crafts, stationery and office supplies, home furnishings and electronics.

Little boys will roar for I Speak Dinosaur!, in which an energetic kid with a big imagination prefers to “speak Dinosaur.” Speaking Dinosaur means he doesn’t have to use his manners and instead can roar and growl at his friends and family! But speaking Dinosaur gets the boy into trouble and without other “dinosaurs” to talk to and play with, he gets lonely. Delivering a fun message that encourages young readers to express themselves creatively, yet cautioning that even dinosaurs need to be polite and say “please” and “thank you,” this dino-mite book will have larger-than-life kid appeal.

Chad’s got the summertime blues: his parents want him to be home by midnight (no extra innings) and eat healthier (no corn dogs). His friend, Abby, has bobblehead issues. And then there’s pinch hitter Sammy Solaris. But Sammy has problems of his own. He has a big swing but is too slow. If he can’t speed up his running and stealing, he’ll be off the team. There’s got to be something Chad can do to save the day . . . with a little help from Dylan, a baseball card and that porcupine! Kurtis Scaletta is the author of several acclaimed school novels. Eric Wight is the creator of the Frankie Pickle illustrated chapter book series.

Sabrina and Daphne Grimm have studied hundreds of fairy tales as part of their family business, but they never thought they’d actually be in one. And yet that’s exactly what happens when they follow the diabolical Master into the Book of Everafter, a mysterious tome in which copies of the world’s fairy tales live out their stories over and over again. The Grimms must track down the Master while avoiding the book’s tyrannical Editor, who is devoted to keeping the stories on track. In the Book of Everafter, stories can be rewritten, which is why Sabrina and Daphne must find the Master before he can alter his fate—and the fate of the whole world.

Meanwhile, their old friend Mr. Canis seems to be losing his grip on his human self, becoming more like the Big Bad Wolf every day. For the first time since their parents were kidnapped, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm return to their hometown, New York City, to find Puck’s family. But the fairy-tale detectives get more than they bargained for in the Big Apple: wand-wielding fairy godfathers, swashbuckling Wall Street pirates, subway-stealing dwarfs, and, worst of all, hidden among these urban Everafters, a murderer. This isn’t the city Sabrina remembers, the place where she spent happy, normal days with her family. Even her memories of her parents aren’t safe. As the sisters Grimm investigate the death of an important Everafter, they learn that their mother kept a secret from them that might lead to the heart of that evil organization, the Scarlet Hand.
