SUNNY-SIDE-UP | CHRISTMAS Wishes
2020
CHRISTMAS Wishes Dear Colleagues, It’s that time again, the year is drawing to a close - the year 2020, which will probably go down in history due to the pandemic situation and its impact on our lives. An exciting, but above all, challenging year for each of us, all over the world. For LOHMANN, 2020 should have been the year of innovations, at least that was the motto for this year’s edition of our Franchise Distributor Meeting, which unfortunately had to be canceled. But, of course, I could not imagine this kind of innovations and so many new paths that we all had to strike. Nevertheless, we have managed to maintain a bit of normality and tradition: As you can see our “Sunny Side Up” is getting released this year as well. Despite Corona, a lot has happened that is worth reporting about, our renovation measures alone could fill the entire magazine. Once more we will be giving you an insider’s peek on one of our departments, we try to do handicrafts and to cook and, of course, a thorough reporting from our sister companies and subsidiaries should not be missing either! But we were also a bit innovative here, as you have already seen. My Christmas wishes and my thanks to all of you for the good cooperation were sent by video message this year. Something different, but this way I was able to address every one of you. Now all that remains for me is to wish you a lot of fun and enjoy our latest edition of “Sunny Side Up”.

The first ONLINE COMPANY MEETING
T
HIS YEAR, everything was different, including the way we shared/exchanged information.
We all became familiar with meetings via ZOOM, MS TEAMS or other video platforms, as we had to use them almost every day. We were even forced to hold our annual COMPANY MEETING completely online, due to the Corona pandemic. 2

In our newly renovated “AULA”, we have created the technical prerequisites to broadcast LIVE to the whole LOHMANN world on October 9th, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. The new AULA felt like a film studio - light, sound, and cameras everywhere. A total of 170 colleagues from different time zones watched our first ONLINE COMPANY MEETING in front of their computers, laptops, tablets, or mobile phones!! At the headquarter in Cuxhaven, 30 colleagues including the speakers took part. In order to maintain minimum distancing, we had to use all of the new meeting rooms. A particularly positive side effect of this ONLINE MEETING was that we were able to bring the LOHMANN BREEDERS family together across all borders and report on current events in our company.

This was indeed a very special and significant year for our company - marked by the Corona crisis, the innovative solutions and ideas of the entire team to overcome this crisis, the change of the company name after more than 60 years, and the reconstruction of the company headquarters in Cuxhaven - LOHMANN BREEDERS is ready for new challenges.

Afterwards he handed over the floor to the heads of department - here are the most important statements of the individual departments:
Genetics
DR. SCHMUTZ showed the 5 locations of our PED birds and explained briefly the change of the farm cycling concept to make more genetic progress from the early use of young PED males. This is the advantage of genomic selection, to identify earlier in life the males with the best breeding values.
Also, the new investments in Transponder nest system in Wanhรถden farm and in Challenge tests in Russia (Emanjelinka Farm) were shown and explained. These investments are necessary to safeguard the long-term success of the breeding process, especially for cage free production.

Production
JĂ–RG HEIER gave us a great overview about our production activities. Over the last years, Lohmann Breeders GmbH was forced to set up more globally located production facilities. Positive pressures like increasing numbers in sales and number of purelines; while the worldwide was facing Avian influenza threats, were the main driving forces.
We built new pureline facilities, invested in additional GP farms as well as hatcheries. In total we invested more than 20 M â‚Ź over the last 4 years. Today, our entire operation is distributed in:
12 countries via 26 farms A feedmill 5 hatcheries with a capacity of 11,5 million chicks.

All over the globe, nearly 200 employees are taking care about our production, emphasizing extra care to our Chicks and Breeding stocks. We like to say many thanks to all of you, for the ongoing support. Every single one of you is part of the success and is helping to keep the production working.

the new marketing activities. The marketing team used the Corona restrictions to build a completely new communication strategy.
The basis of this strategy is the new LOHMANN website (www.lohmann-breeders.com), which was presented during the event. In the future, the website should not only inform, but also be able to work with and entertain its visitors. Together with the LOHMANN TEAM and our customers, we want to create a new “LOHMANN COMMUNICATION WORLD” - our own social media tool.

Renovation work “AM SEEDEICH” Turning old into new
I
T HAS NOW BEEN MORE THAN A YEAR since we started our renovation work. But an end is finally in sight, and with impressive results.
14
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Renovation work “Am Seedeich” – turning old into new
2020
In the beginning there was a plan
The basic idea behind the renovation was to make the office building in Cuxhaven more attractive for customers. It’s not enough for you to know you’re visiting one of the largest producers of day-old parent stock chicks, but should also see and feel it. But how can that be achieved? New meeting rooms were needed with a nice lobby where you feel welcome. And while we are already renovating, it should also be nicer for the employees - new kitchens, freshly painted walls and new floors make a big difference here. No sooner said than done, that was the plan. But how do you implement such a large project?
15
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Renovation work “Am Seedeich” – turning old into new
2020
The concept We started by hiring an interior designer to design the rooms. Mr. Kai Fischer from the architectural office “Das Syndikat” convinced us with his first drafts. First, the two SMALL MEETING ROOMS for LOHMANN and H&N were to be redesigned. The same concept, but with two different equipment related to the respective company.
BEFORE...
...AFTER
Of course, the latest technology should not be missing here. 16
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Renovation work “Am Seedeich” – turning old into new

The LIBRARY should live up to its name again. Another kind of conference room was planned here, classic and cozy, a room that convinces without any special technology.

BEFORE...
But the highlight must be our new AUDITORIUM, THE SOCALLED AULA, in which our training courses for up to 50 people can take place in the future. Walls were torn down and a new ventilation and lighting systems were installed.
...AFTER
Technology was also a focal point here, with new screens and projectors and a panel from which everything can be controlled. But attention is also paid to details that establish a connection to the company. For example, there are some wall elements engrained with real eggshells and our chickens were also shown on a wall. 18

So that visitors can also be entertained if necessary, the entire RECEPTION AREA should be redesigned. On the one hand it should look inviting, but should also offer enough space for coffee breaks and a short lunch. Practical aspects such as tables that “disappear” when not in use have been taken into account here. The color choice, green in connection with wood, represents the connection to agriculture. On the whole, the entrance area should look like a large square, hence the choice of carpet, which should be reminiscent of a paving with a little green that flashes through the cracks. But the technology cannot be missing in this area either. You can find out more about the LOHMANN and H&N companies on 8 screens, and you can even visit the website yourself on the touchscreen. A special eye-catcher is of course the workstation integrated in the reception hall with an illuminated world

map. Every visitor knows immediately where to turn. 19

The path (with some obstacles) is the goal And so, we enthusiastically set to work. But anyone who has ever renovated an old house knows that there is a surprise waiting around every corner and under every tile. We were able to overcome all these minor and major surprises, but at the cost of time and nerves. Delivery delays and stoppages caused by Corona also led to a considerable delay of the process.
In some cases, however, these difficulties also led to completely new ideas, which were then promptly implemented. All colleagues on site followed this path with interest because they were forced to. They had to have a thick skin in order to withstand the noise and dirt that such a construction site brings over such a long period of time and to continue working normally. Sometimes long distances had to be covered to get to the workplace or the toilets, which unfortunately could not always be used. On some days it also took a certain amount of athletic skill to get to work. At this point, many thanks again to everyone for their patience and understanding!

(Not) an end in sight? A few little big things are still outstanding. The stairwell in the office wing of “Am Seedeich 11” is still being completely renovated and we will also be active as hobby gardeners and create a pretty garden area next to the auditorium.
When the inside shines so beautifully in new splendor, the outside view should not be neglected.
The renovation team has now made friends with the new old task, even if steel beams, fire doors, sewer pipes and power lines have nothing to do with normal everyday work for some. But you never stop learning.

We hope our donation of € 1,050 can help ensure that regular lessons can take place safely for the students of the Lichtenberg Gymnasium even in Corona times. We also like to make a brief statement regarding the “duck race 2020” that we had planned to support with our donation in 2019. Unfortunately, the “duck race” has also been canceled due to the corona situation. The promised donation of € 1,050 will be made available to the current campaign “The Tree of Hope” NG

CORONA What does that mean for us?
C
ORONA/COVID-19/THE PANDEMIC is still the dominant topic for us. We all know very well what effects the pandemic is having on our private lives. But what about the effects on our company, our workplace or that of our colleagues? Of course, we all have to contend with minor and major adversities, within our field of activity. After our company meeting on October 9th, 2020 it was clear, however, which department really had to deal with the effects of the pandemic day in day out: Logistics. This is why we would like to publish an interview with Silvia MouriĂąo, Director of Planning & Logistics, to give an impression of the daily work of chick transport during the pandemic.
24
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Corona - what does that mean for us?
2020
What was the situation in March? Transport collapse to put it quite clearly, all previously known means of transport collapsed in March. Up to 90% of our exports were made by air, mostly with reliable passenger planes. The reason for this was that these have been considered the most reliable for decades, as the departure times usually have few delays and there are also fewer flight cancellations. Now
this
possibility
has
almost
completely disappeared, as there was a loss of 80% of the flights worldwide in mid-March. The remaining 20% could not necessarily be used for our purposes because the aircraft was not adequately ventilated or did not have adequate storage space.
In addition, there were also airlines that did not take chicks or hatching eggs for fear that they could spread COVID-19 or are contagious! In addition, it also failed on flight routes that did not meet our supply chain requirements or they did not have a license for AVI handling.
25
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Corona - what does that mean for us?
2020
On top of that, sanitary goods naturally had priority during this time, even if live animals were already booked on the flight. Original partners who otherwise brokered and sold flights had no solutions or answers and collapsed completely. From one day to the next we had to find several flights for the day we woke up as all flights disappeared for the exports of that day hatches and all following 3 weeks planed hatches in the machines. We had to find solutions and orders were prepared without flight booking in advance. Every day we had to work our way up to new solutions.
Freight flights only 2nd choice? Normally, cargo flights are only our second option, but at these times we had to use this possibility as our only one. But even these flights were rare and the departure airports were difficult to reach, i. e. our chicks were flown there by charter to catch the long distance flight on time.
We have used private charter flights several
times
and
also
tried
to
convince the major airlines to use their parked aircrafts for this. At nearby destinations, the last part sometimes had to be mastered with an air taxi or a smaller charter.
26
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Corona - what does that mean for us?
2020
Another challenge was that even if a flight was found, some airports did not have staff available to load the chicks due to the quarantine rules and reduced worker numbers and making shifts to split the teams in case one shift became Corona positive. So we had to fly our team members there to help out the staff on site.
Again, there were lockdown times at the destinations, i. e. there was a curfew period from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. so that chicks that arrived at 9 p.m. could not be loaded until the next morning. Not an option for us!
27
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Corona - what does that mean for us?
2020
Lockdown with customers Our customers again had the problem that their team could have come to the airport to pick up the chicks, but because of the quarantine they were no longer allowed to return to the farm, so the delivery could not be accepted. They then decided that the workers stay at the production farm and in one example we experienced that the said team needed to sleep on the farm with the birds to follow the shutdown rules not to go from one area to another in their country.
Trucks are also not barrier-free There were also problems with deliveries by truck. It had to be closely monitored whether drivers had to be in quarantine or whether the situation has changed due to different regulations. Borders were closed and traffic jams lasted for hours - unsustainable for living animals! New routes had to be explored until politicians finally established “fast lane lines for animals.
28
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Corona - what does that mean for us?
2020
How is the situation today? Fortunately, some flights are available again today, but not as before. The prices are also immensely high and sanitary goods are still the top priority. We continue to mainly use charter and freighters for air transport and are happy to have again more flights available to reach “unreachable destinations. Mainly we try to go the independent way. That means using as few passenger planes as possible, which is the safest way for us today. In addition, we try as best we can to train newly acquired service providers in how to handle our chicks and hatching eggs and to support them in doing so.
29
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Corona - what does that mean for us?
2020
What was the biggest challenge of that time? The biggest challenge was that not just one order had no transport, but many at once. All deliveries had the same priority but had to be transported from different locations in all directions. Now it was time to create and combine new ways. Unfortunately, the solution for one order could not serve as a model for the other deliveries. The fact that we continued to place orders at all locations at the same time was a challenge par excellence.
Was there something to smile about, an anecdote that is fondly remembered? Sometimes there were creative solutions that we found also amusing. For example, a difficult cargo became a VIP flight! Our chicks were finally able to travel appropriately, because if you want to achieve top performance, you can also look forward to traveling in business class.
30
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Corona - what does that mean for us?
2020
What does the future promise? It will be several months, if not years, before we get to where we left off in 2019. The pandemic has put airlines in financial straits. Pilots have lost their jobs and parts of the airport staff have also been cut. It will take a very long time before flights are occupied again like pre-COVID. Of course, we are still working on possibilities, independent of passenger planes and private charters, but the focus is now on guaranteeing flight time reliability, training the individual teams on the new possibilities and bringing flight prices on a profitable basis.
To transform new ways into easily controllable ways, that is our goal! Or as the saying goes: the journey is the aim!

I
N EVERY, issue of Sunny Side Up, we aim to shed more light on a specific department of our establishment and introduce it to our readers, and for this edition, we take a closer look at Administration. It goes without saying that administration is a very comprehensive term and at LOHMANN’s it’s no different. Our admin department includes everything from: Financial accounting
Contract management
Human resources
Reception and facility management.

achievements. Continuous management improvement, with added focus that all global resources function in the most efficient way are part of his daily challenges and motivation.
I’m very proud to work day-by-day with a highly committed and dedicated team that supports the entire LOHMANN family in any matter requiring our attention. Even if a lot of administrative activities take place in the background and mostly in secret, we are very motivated, committed and proud to be able to make our contribution so that the LOHMANN Group can continue to grow and expand on its successes.
Our credo is that we want to work very closely with all the other departments and provide them with the best possible support to help them meet their own specific requirements. Large interface areas are in HR, investment requirements, information management to get right numbers for right decisions and process management in order to make the individual activities in the company as efficient as possible.
34
SUNNY-SIDE-UP | Administration Department
2020
We have a great team together that is represented by high experiences, excellent knowledge, above average engagement and lively dynamic. Our current focus is to continue to use the current situation in order to push the progress of digitization further and to use the available capacities as efficiently as possible by using limited resources as sparingly as possible. We have therefore been trying already; for some time, to replace manual paper-based business processes with digital and electronically supported software and IT solutions (vacation requests, travel requests, investment requests and much more). An interims target achievement is the reduction of paper printouts by greatly minimizing the number of printers from 80 (in 2015) to 8 in 2020. This enabled over 60% of printouts to get saved or, in other words, if you were to set all the printed pages next to each other, it would’ve covered the distance from Cuxhaven to Hamburg, year after year.

HE YEAR 2020 started with big changes for us. The laboratory has been a 100% subsidiary of LOHMANN BREEDERS GmbH since January 1st, 2020. As a result, the decision was made to expand the range of examinations and no longer offer strictly poultry diagnostics.

The first opportunity was offered by the ongoing corona situation. We had just received the permit required for diagnostics and established the necessary examination method, when at the end of April we were involved in a mass testing of the passengers of a cruise ship that was in quarantine in the port of Cuxhaven. In the following time, the service for investigations for the SARS-CoV-2 virus was continuously expanded and new regional customers were constantly acquired.
We are currently working on accreditation for further diagnostic areas, for example to develop the analysis of food and water. JANUARY 10th company anniversary of Dr. Anne Bolte Anniversaries

Brand Identity into a visual concept included a new website as core platform and information hub.
We want to make the people feel our birds and get the right information they need without wasting their time, explains
XABIER
ARBE.
Launched
October 2020 it is a dynamic website with some new tools like The Chickipedia, that gain a lot of positive feedback.
New “Facts that Figure” What can we write? Hm, let’s see… let’s take a look back. And the next thing we knew was that our “Facts that Figure”, in short FTF, had grown to a massive 88 pages. We soon jokingly called it the “Bible”, although it’s not the least bit complete and we could have gone on with many more stories. But an anniversary edition can be bigger and to comply to the paperless office in future we will focus on offering content presumably online and limit printable materials to print-on-demand.

New Event-Format We did many things differently on purpose thanks to our new mission as independent company. Taking the annual academy for customers online was different, though, and quite a pioneering effort. The personal get-together time in the past obviously mattered most to form strong bonds but was not possible this year.
Yet, we did not just want to do one presentation after another but find a way for personal exchange even though it would have to be done online, explains XABIER ARBE. So, H&N tried to take as much from the usual format as possible and offered parallel break out rooms with real time discussion.
New Learnings The intensive collaboration over three days and three time zones were received very well from some five hundred active registrants from all over the world. From 6th to 8th October 2020 the virtual event split into three times Layer Academy, three times Campus and one entire day Distributor Meeting.
OCTOBER
6-8
Of course we need to apply some changes to our next events to make them even better, and we will, says XABIER ARBE. And as soon as personal meetings will be possible again, we will definitely do these again, too!
And what’s next? We have used the past year to rebrand and position ourselves, learned our lessons in doing online events and will now be delivering on our brand promises, concludes XABIER ARBE. 68
